Given the Discussions today on WTC 7 – Comprehensive Answers

An official website of the United States government – Questions and Answers about the NIST WTC 7 Investigation

Questions and Answers about the NIST WTC 7 Investigation (09/17/2010, ARCHIVE, incorporated into 9/19/2011 update)

What was WTC 7?

The original World Trade Center Building 7 (WTC 7) was a 47-story office building located immediately to the north of the main World Trade Center (WTC) complex. Completed in 1987, it was built on top of an existing Con Edison substation and located on land owned by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
When did WTC 7 collapse?

On Sept. 11, 2001, WTC 7 endured fires for almost seven hours, from the time of the collapse of the north WTC tower (WTC 1) at 10:28:22 a.m. until 5:20:52 p.m., when WTC 7 collapsed.

What caused the fires in WTC 7?

Debris from the collapse of WTC 1, which was 370 feet to the south, ignited fires on at least 10 floors in the building at its south and west faces. However, only the fires on some of the lower floors-7 through 9 and 11 through 13-burned out of control. These lower-floor fires-which spread and grew because the water supply to the automatic sprinkler system for these floors had failed-were similar to building fires experienced in other tall buildings. The primary and backup water supply to the sprinkler systems for the lower floors relied on the city’s water supply, whose lines were damaged by the collapse of WTC 1 and WTC 2. These uncontrolled lower-floor fires eventually spread to the northeast part of WTC 7, where the building’s collapse began.

How did the fires cause WTC 7 to collapse?

The heat from the uncontrolled fires caused steel floor beams and girders to thermally expand, leading to a chain of events that caused a key structural column to fail. The failure of this structural column then initiated a fire-induced progressive collapse of the entire building.

According to the report’s probable collapse sequence, heat from the uncontrolled fires caused thermal expansion of the steel beams on the lower floors of the east side of WTC 7, damaging the floor framing on multiple floors.

Eventually, a girder on Floor 13 lost its connection to a critical column, Column 79, that provided support for the long floor spans on the east side of the building (see Diagram 1). The displaced girder and other local fire-induced damage caused Floor 13 to collapse, beginning a cascade of floor failures down to the 5th floor. Many of these floors had already been at least partially weakened by the fires in the vicinity of Column 79. This collapse of floors left Column 79 insufficiently supported in the east-west direction over nine stories.

The unsupported Column 79 then buckled and triggered an upward progression of floor system failures that reached the building’s east penthouse. What followed in rapid succession was a series of structural failures. Failure first occurred all the way to the roof line-involving all three interior columns on the easternmost side of the building (79, 80, 81). Then, progressing from east to west across WTC 7, all of the columns failed in the core of the building (58 through 78). Finally, the entire façade collapsed.

Typical WTC 7 floor showing locations of columns (numbered).

The buckling of Column 79 was the initiating event that led to the collapse of WTC 7. The buckling resulted from fire-induced damage to floors around column 79, failure of the girder between Columns 79 and 44, and cascading floor failures.

What is progressive collapse?

Progressive collapse is defined as the spread of local damage from a single initiating event, from structural element to element, eventually resulting in the collapse of an entire structure or a disproportionately large part of it. The failure of WTC 7 was an example of a fire-induced progressive collapse.

Progressive collapse did NOT occur in the WTC towers, for two reasons. First, the collapse of each tower was not triggered by a local damage or a single initiating event. Second, the structures were able to redistribute loads from the impact and fire-damaged structural components and subsystems to undamaged components and to keep the building standing until a sudden, global collapse occurred. Had a hat truss that connected the core columns to the exterior frame not been installed to support a TV antenna atop each WTC tower after the structure had been fully designed, it is likely that the core of the WTC towers would have collapsed sooner, triggering a global collapse. Such a collapse would have some features similar to that of a progressive collapse.

How did the collapse of WTC 7 differ from the collapses of WTC 1 and WTC 2?

WTC 7 was unlike the WTC towers in many respects. WTC 7 was a more typical tall building in the design of its structural system.

It was not struck by an aircraft.

The collapse of WTC 7 was caused by a single initiating event-the failure of a northeast building column brought on by fire-induced damage to the adjacent flooring system and connections-which stands in contrast to the WTC 1 and WTC 2 failures, which were brought on by multiple factors, including structural damage caused by the aircraft impact, extensive dislodgement of the sprayed fire-resistive materials or fireproofing in the impacted region, and a weakening of the steel structures created by the fires.

The fires in WTC 7 were quite different from the fires in the WTC towers. Since WTC 7 was not doused with thousands of gallons of jet fuel, large areas of any floor were not ignited simultaneously as they were in the WTC towers. Instead, separate fires in WTC 7 broke out on different floors, most notably on Floors 7 to 9 and 11 to 13. The WTC 7 fires were similar to building contents fires that have occurred in several tall buildings where the automatic sprinklers did not function or were not present.

Why did WTC 7 collapse, while no other known building in history has collapsed due to fires alone?

The collapse of WTC 7 is the first known instance of a tall building brought down primarily by uncontrolled fires. The fires in WTC 7 were similar to those that have occurred in several tall buildings where the automatic sprinklers did not function or were not present. These other buildings, including Philadelphia’s One Meridian Plaza, a 38-story skyscraper that burned for 18 hours in 1991, did not collapse due to differences in the design of the structural system.

Factors contributing to WTC 7’s collapse included: the thermal expansion of building elements such as floor beams and girders, which occurred at temperatures hundreds of degrees below those typically considered in current practice for fire-resistance ratings; significant magnification of thermal expansion effects due to the long-span floors in the building; connections between structural elements that were designed to resist the vertical forces of gravity, not the thermally induced horizontal or lateral loads; and an overall structural system not designed to prevent fire-induced progressive collapse.

– What are the major differences between “typical” major high rise building fires that have occurred in the United States and the fire in the WTC 7 building on September 11, 2001?

– Some people have said that a failure at one column should not have produced a symmetrical fall like this one. What’s your answer to those assertions?

– In a video, it appears that WTC 7 is descending in free fall, something that would not occur in the structural collapse that you describe. How can you ignore basic laws of physics?

– Does this mean there are hundreds or thousands of unsafe tall buildings with long span supports that must be retrofitted in some way? How would you retrofit a building to prevent this problem?

– Did investigators consider the possibility that an explosion caused or contributed to the collapse of WTC 7?

– Is it possible that thermite or thermate contributed to the collapse of WTC 7?

– An emergency responder caught in the building between the 6th and 8th floors says he heard two loud booms. Isn’t that evidence that there was an explosion?

– n June 2009, NIST began releasing documents in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request from the International Center for 9/11 Studies for “all of the photographs and videos collected, reviewed, cited or in any other way used by NIST during its investigation of the World Trade Center building collapses.” One of the items released, a video obtained from NBC News , shows World Trade Center Building 7 (WTC 7) in the moments before it collapsed, then cuts to the collapse already in progress, with the building’s east penthouse “disappearing” from the scene (as it had already fallen in the intervening time). Other videos of the WTC 7 collapse show the penthouse falling first, followed by the rest of the building. Did NIST edit the NBC News video to remove the collapse of the penthouse?

– Did fuel oil systems in WTC 7 contribute to its collapse?

– Why did NIST model the sprayed fire resistive material (SFRM, also referred to as fireproofing) on the WTC 7 beams and columns as a “perfect” installation (i.e., without any gaps or damage in the SFRM coating), when realistically most buildings have some gaps or damage in the SFRM coating, either due to improper installation or deterioration over time?

– Why did the investigation take so long to complete?

– Did debris from the collapse of WTC 1 cause damage to WTC 7’s structure in a way that contributed to the building’s collapse?

– Would WTC 7 have collapsed even if there had been no structural damage induced by the collapse of the WTC towers?

– Why did WTC 7’s sprinkler systems fail during the fires?

– How hot did WTC 7’s steel columns and floor beams get?

– Did the electrical substation next to WTC 7 play a role in the fires or collapse?

– Why were there no fatalities from the collapse of WTC 7?

– Why didn’t the investigators look at actual steel samples from WTC 7?

– Your entire investigation included no physical evidence. How can you be so sure you know what happened?

– Did WTC 7 conform to building and fire codes?

– What improvements to building safety have been recommended as a result of the WTC 7 investigation?

– What are some of the firsts in this investigation?

– Why did NIST study the collapse of WTC 7?

– How does the final report on WTC 7 issued on Nov. 23, 2008, differ from the draft report that was released for public comment on Aug. 21, 2008?

– Have the recommendations from NIST’s investigation of the WTC towers led to any changes in building codes, standards, and practices?

– What specific code changes based on recommendations from NIST’s investigation of the WTC towers have been approved for inclusion in the International Building Code?

Sancho as I understand it the steel did not need to melt nor to be overly weakened, it simply had to expand with the heat.
The steel in the Tower design formed an exoskeleton. All internal and floor structures were supported by the external shell of vertical girders rigidified obviously by horizontal and oblique lattice.
Not unreasonably I guess, the architecs did not seriously study the impact of furnace level temperatures on the exoskeleton. In simple terms, the exoskeleton expanded thus severing all of the support for the internal structures which then literally ‘fell through the floor’.

The ‘official’ (and, from an engineering perspective, most plausible) conclusion was that, because the fire sprinkler system was knocked out (by the fairly unusual circumstances of WTC1 falling on the local water supply main), the fires were hot enough for long enough for thermal expansion of the very long horizontal steel structural members to displace the vertical steel supports.
And the rest was gravity.

The analyses I have read address this:

1) Most if the jetfuel was aerosolised instantly at impact and burned in the initial fireball – little if any would have remained an hour or more later, and none contributed to the Building 7 fire.
2) Even if it had soaked building 7, we know the maximum temp produced by a jetfuel fire and it was *never* hot enough to soften the steel, regardless of the fires duration – its a bit like heating an icesheet from -15c to -10, its still not hot enough to melt the ice.
3) Precisely zero steel framed buildings comparable to 7 have collapsed in fires apart from on 911 (when 3 did) – this is no accident- these structures are designed to survive this.Bld 7 in particular was just an ordinary ‘office fire’ – if that was enough to bring it down, there would have been multiple other examples.

Dont get distracted by WTC 1&2 here, something about #7 doesnt add up.

French regulators on Tuesday ordered Apple to halt sales of the iPhone 12 for emitting too much electromagnetic radiation, and to fix existing handsets.

Good luck with that silly French bureaucratic peoples. I’m sure all your government types will just love handing in their cherished iPhones.

Will your USB-C cable work with the new iPhone?

John Davidson
Columnist

USB-C has been around since 2014, and it was widely adopted by all the world’s phone manufacturers (except Apple) starting mid-2015.

The term, which stands for “Universal Serial Bus Type C”, refers to the physical connector that plugs into Android phones, laptops, Macs, PCs, iPads and, soon, iPhones.

If you have a USB-C certified cable from any of those devices, you can be sure it will plug into any other of those devices, including the iPhone 15.

What you can’t be sure of, though, is whether it will work as you hoped. Like most technology standards, the devil is in the detail.

There are half a dozen different USB specifications, as well as a couple of Thunderbolt standards, that all use the same USB-C connector, you see.

Some of them, such as the “USB 2” specification Apple used for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, offer data transfer speed of 480 megabits-per-second, the same as the micro-USB (or, in Apple’s case, Lightning) cables they replaced.

Some of them, such as the “USB 3” specification Apple used for its fancier iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone Pro Max phones, offer transfer speeds of 10 gigabits-per-second, 20-times faster.

Thunderbolt USB-C cables (which usually have a lightning logo on them, but otherwise look identical) go as fast as 40 gigabits per second. Newer USB-C cables that support the “USB 4” spec can go as fast as 80 gigabits per second.

But speed is just the beginning of how USB-C cables can differ from each other.

‘Alternate Mode’

Some are wired differently, to allow what’s known as “Alternate Mode”, which allows them to carry video signals as well as regular USB data and power. If you’ve ever plugged a monitor into a laptop using a USB-C connector at both ends, and the monitor refused to turn on, the cable probably lacked Alternate Mode wiring.

Others are wired to allow Thunderbolt connections, which are a superset of USB-C, but operate at higher (or lower) speeds, can be daisy-chained, and in the case of the newer Thunderbolt 4 standard, can support two 4K monitors over a single connection.

Also, there’s the question of how much power the cable can handle. Some can deliver 100 watts of power, to charge a laptop. Others can only handle 15 watts, and are good only for charging phones.

bum a charge off anyone.

It’s confusing, to be sure, but you’re still going to be better off with USB-C than you were with the Lightning cables they’re replacing. Windows PCs, Macs, iPads, Android tablets, all sorts of devices use USB-C for charging and connectivity, and all of them should work to charge your new iPhone 15, at the very least, meaning you can now bum a charge off anyone.

And, for most iPhone users, that’s all you need the cable for, anyway. Unless you’re shooting huge video files, most data gets transferred to and from your phone wirelessly.

And, increasingly, so does electrical power. Apple’s new-ish MagSafe system for charging iPhones is much more convenient and interesting than a Lightning or USB-C cable, and it means you might never once need any sort of cable for your phone, other than the one that plugs your MagSafe wireless charging point to your power supply in the wall socket.

I don’t have a problem with the explanation for WTC 1 and 2, but the explanation for WTC 7 seems iffy. That isn’t to say that there isn’t some other plausible explanation that arises from the circumstances of the collapse of WTC 1 and 2. But it isn’t weird to see this and go, hmm.

How does watching the top 10% of the building in vid toppling over/ imploding offer any insight into what happened structurally to make you go “ummmm”?

” He [Trump] is the only candidate at present who could do it [gut the deep state].”

Agreed – Vivek, who seems to me to be the only other candidate with the cajones to do it, would likely fall into the same trap that Trump did in his first term, viz: thinking he’ll get support from the establishment for policy he campaigned on.

That said, a lot will depend on the R primaries – not just for Prez, but for house and senate too. If the RINO’s all (or largely) get “primaried” out for MAGA supporters, then whichever R presidential candidate it is (if they win) would have a much easier time getting this stuff done. Always assuming that the house and senate have R majorities as well, and how big those majorities are.

Watching US politics from afar is very much like watching a train wreck, or a nuclear explosion – hideous, fascinating and dangerous, all at the same time. In some ways, your glad you’re not directly involved, yet worried about the consequences if they “get it wrong” and kind of wishing you did have some control over it despite the risks. And once you start watching, it’s almost impossible to look away.

I’m also a Woody fan. He’s a very good actor. I loved him in True Detective and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Allen produces a new movie every 18 months or so, amazingly productive. There are some gems in there, but most are dross. Really impressed with “Crimes and Misdemeanours”, and the theme was copied in “Arbitrage”. He also miscasts himself in his movies, like in “Manhattan”.

Video emerges of Marcia Langton saying ‘hard No voters spewing racism’ after she defended herself over controversial remarks

Prominent Yes campaigner Marcia Langton has been filmed calling some No voters racist, after she had defended herself when footage emerged of her from the weekend branding those against the Voice to Parliament “stupid”.

Professor Marcia Langton has been filmed saying “hard No voters” of the Voice to Parliament are “spewing racism”, after earlier defending her remarks at a more recent forum in Western Australia on the weekend.

Sky News Australia Political Editor Andrew Clennell revealed on Wednesday morning more footage had surfaced of the professor labelling those, she defined as “hard no” voters, as “racist”.

The clips shows the prominent Yes campaigner at a University of Queensland event just a few months ago in July making the remarks.

In one speech seen by Sky News Australia, Ms Langton describes all “hard no” voters as racist, saying they “are the ones spewing racism”.

“The surge of racist nonsense is confined to a minority of Australians,” she said.

“Ordinary Australians are thinking Yes. Of course I am voting for the Voice and that would be 48-49 per cent.

“Then there is hard No voters and I am hoping they are about 20 per cent and they are the ones spewing racism.”

Ms Langton also linked the “hard No” vote to Opposition Leader Peter Dutton.

“Both conservative leaders the Liberal Party Opposition leader Peter Dutton and the National Party leader David Littleproud have committed their parties to advocating a hard no case for the question,” she said in the video.

“Moreover their arguments are speciesist.

“Appealing to their racist base with claims that the proposal will racially divide the nation.”

In another instance Ms Langton took aim at “racist” social workers and police officers.

“Families have been broken apart by social workers who are, by and large, white and racist,” she said.

“We need a radical culture change to stop the the police from criminalising more and more people.

“Simply because the police are racist, because they get brownie points to rounding people up.”

It comes after Ms Langton defended herself in comments to Nine Newspapers following her remarks at a Western Australia forum.

Video of the event was first reported by local newspaper Bunbury Herald, with Sky News Australia host Sharri Markson obtaining the video.

The prominent Yes campaigner, and key Voice architect, sought to link the arguments outlined by the No side to “base racism”, while speaking in Bunbury.

“Every time the No cases raise their arguments, if you start pulling it apart you get down to base racism,” she told a forum on Sunday.

“I’m sorry to say that’s where it lands, or sheer stupidity.

“If you look at any reputable fact-checker, every one of them says the No case is substantially false. They are lying to you.”

Are there videos of WTC7 from other perspectives. Trying to visualise what happened from one distant video is near impossible. Anything built on reclaimed land is prone to difficulties without being the size of skyscrapers. Having two building’s collapse nearby is bound to have caused rippling enough to shear the bolts. It appeared the building started to collapse on the far left side. Once you start on conspiracy theory in engineering there is too much to go wrong to be successful, people not so much, so many loonies around. Especially on blogs.

Assuming that the steel did either “atomize” or create small chunck, my educated guess is that:

A: The dust observed was a combination of the facade and coverings including tens of thousands of Mt of glass/concrete/agregate/fire retardent/ceramic material.

B: If the steel did in fact disintegrate as mention, the steel used in towers 1&2 was martinistic, which offers supperior compressive strenght to austenitic steel, but is significatnly harder and more brittle and crystaline in nature. The sheer and massive change in dynamic load due to the collapsing tower above, put so much stress on the steel at it’s base, it then likely failed along the crystiline structure creating a lot of relatively small chunks.

I don’t for one second believe the conspiracy theories that it was a controlled demolition. It was an extraordianry event where a roughly fully laden 90 Mt plane traveling at 300+ knots hit the side of each tower roughly a thrid from the top. This kind of event was and still is well outside the design perview of worst case scenario safety margins.

Not in the least distracted by WTC1 & 2..

1) Nobody has suggested that jet fuel contributed to the fire in WTC7;

2) Nobody has suggested that the fires in WTC7 were hot enough to soften the structural steel;

3) The entire sprinkler system in WTC7 was disabled by the collapse of WTC1 breaking the water supply main. The fires (paper, computers, carpet) burned uncontrolled for 7 hours – enough to raise the temperature of the structural steel sufficiently to cause thermal expansion of the unusually long horizontal members to the extent that the vertical supports were disturbed and the whole structure failed.

There are in fact examples of serious structural damage and partial collapse in steel framed buildings in similar fire circumstances – none of those, however had the added load of having large parts of a 90-floor neighboring tower come through the front of the building.

That’s the simple explanation, which adds up reasonably from an engineering and material science perspective.

Much more complicated explanations that don’t involve these processes but do involve secret controlled demolition are a lot harder to add up without demanding suspension of disbelief. (Explanations involving death rays don’t add up at all but do invite medical attention.)

Yuugely yuge entertainment catching up this morning’s work on this august journal of record.

‘Towers turned to dust’, when quickly rebutted with every single demolition of anything over two storeys also covering everything around it with dust, quickly morphed into ‘yeah but the towers vaporised’ when very, very clearly, they did not.

It’s someone who really, really wants to believe that the Stonecutters are using sharks with frickin’ laser beams* against Teh PeoPle.

Here’s my alternate explanation why that building went down, with people still pondering the cause. From recollection, the shithole was built in 60s or 70s. We had clients in there and used to visit occasionally. People used to complain the heating and a/c were terrible- not that it mattered to the structure.

The mafia were heavily into construction in the 60s and 70s and brown paper envelopes going to city ordinance can’t be discounted. Perhaps cutting corners was the cause of potential structural weakness. We’ll never know though.

Luxury cruise ship with mostly Australians on board stuck in mud in Greenland Arctic

A luxury cruise ship carrying 206 passengers, mostly Australians, has run aground in remote north-eastern Greenland, and the closest vessel that can help with the rescue is not expected to arrive until Friday.

The Ocean Explorer became stuck at about noon on Monday, Greenland time, in the Alpefjord, roughly 1400 kilometres north-east of Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, according to Brian Jensen of the Danish military’s Joint Arctic Command in Nuuk.

I can see where you are coming from in context, but whether or not you believe a hypothesis is immaterial if you do have scientific integrity.

You might test a hypothesis you believe in to see if it survives the test and supports your belief. In fact you should do this.

You might also test a hypothesis you disbelieve to see if your disbelief was wrongly placed. You should be prepared to do this too, particularly if you are a Critical Rationalist and don’t see a world full of alternative facts.

Interesting World if your Russian is any Good – Barbie (film, 2023)

https://rutube.ru/video/529b93e0a8a7e58dbf0d53659c083aca/

Russians enjoy ‘free’ Barbie

The fully dubbed film was uploaded to the Russian video hosting site one day before its official worldwide digital release

One of this summer’s biggest Hollywood blockbusters, ‘Barbie’, has been leaked in full to the Russian YouTube alternative called RuTube. The film was not officially released in Russia, as Western movie studios left the country due to the conflict in Ukraine.

The full 1 hour, 54-minute movie was uploaded to the video hosting site in 1080p quality and featuring a full Russian dub. The leak came a day before the film’s planned international digital release.

Last week, several movie theaters across Russia also started showing pirated copies of the film with tickets as low as 280 rubles (around $3). Some cinemas, according to Telegram channel Baza, also showed ‘Barbie’ as well as Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ under code names such as ‘Quick Dates’ and ‘Dubak’ (extreme cold), respectively.

Late last month, Russia’s Culture Ministry stated that it would not order the licensing of ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’, explaining that neither of the films meets the “goals and objectives set by the head of state to preserve and strengthen traditional Russian spiritual and moral values.”

The ministry noted that there are plenty of high-quality domestic films, such as the family comedy ‘Cheburashka’ – a Soviet-era cartoon character with big ears – available in Russia.

A friend, who was one of the 11 contractors took me down to the area around early 02. I can’t recall the exact month. I’d say 90% of the debris had been removed by that time but this is just an untrained estimate. There were traces of smoke coming up from the remaining pile and I recall asking if what that was all about . He said there were still small fires coming through the debris that still hadn’t gone, and this was months after.

What was Biden Doing in Alaska?

“For the first time, the president did not visit a 9/11 memorial on the day of the worst terrorist attack on US soil. Instead, the president traveled to Alaska to commit his own attack against the American people. Peter Doocy said that he received a response similar to “Well, presidents stopped visiting Hawaii 22 years after Pearl Harbor,” or in other words, the president does not feel obligated to honor the victims of the attack since it’s in the past. He claimed he was at ground zero on the very day of the attack, but records show that he clearly was not in New York. So why did Biden travel to Alaska? Biden announced he was canceling all drilling on Federal land in Alaska and termination existing permits. In unison, he prohibited liquid gas from being transported via train. This will put a strain on the supply chain as trucking is the only viable transportation method now.

Demand will outweigh supply. Joe Biden drained America’s oil reserves when prices where skyrocketing and he was coming under pressure. The stockpile is at the lowest level since the 1980s, and since we cannot drill our own gas, we are at the mercy of our suppliers who continue to raise the price. Energy had never been an issue prior to Biden taking office and eliminating America’s energy independence.

Is it even legal for the Biden Administration to cancel previously issues leases? Alaskan Governor Mike Dunleavy believes that Biden is bypassing the law and intends to sue his administration. Dunleavy noted that while the Secretary of the Department may cancel oil and gas leases issued in violation, no such violation exists. “The leases AIDEA hold in ANWR were legally issued in a sale mandated by Congress. It’s clear that President Biden needs a refresher on the Constitution’s separation of powers doctrine. Federal agencies don’t get to rewrite laws, and that is exactly what the Department of the Interior is trying to do here,” said Governor Mike Dunleavy. “We will fight for Alaska’s right to develop its own resources and will be turning to the courts to correct the Biden Administration’s wrong.”

Democrats are upset at the ruling as it takes away jobs from native Alaskans. U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola, a Democrat, said that she will continue fighting the lease cancelations. “This makes absolutely no sense from any perspective unless your goal is to drive up the cost of oil and gas so much that it makes certain renewables cheaper,” Dunleavy told Fox News.

Biden has just ensured rising energy costs for all Americans. This is so important to Biden and his handlers that they insisted on spending a national day of mourning in Alaska to reframe climate change as the larger threat to this nation. What does one do when the people in charge are deliberately ruining the nation? They can only blame Russia and climate change for so long until the masses wake up.”

secret squirrel demolition work

Apparently it was a super secret program that had trained squirrels (the rodents) to carry out covert spying ops, mainly around New York. The squirrels were housed in WTC 7 and were ordered by their CIA/FBI handlers to destroy the building so their existence wouldn’t be discovered.

Or something like that. I haven’t read it for over twenty years but do remember finding it very funny at the time.

A couple of things.
Firstly, I don’t have a huge problem with this, except Michael Christian has been loading blokes up for a lot less for two years.
Secondly, I was surprised at Brayshaw’s lack of awareness. One golden rule for sneaky forwards is that, when your opponents feet have both left the ground, his ability to change direction is somewhat compromised. A Charlie Cameron type would have feigned the kick, waited for the jump and cruised around the defender to slot an easy goal from 40 metres.
Had that happened the coach would have been up Maynard for over-committing.

In reinforced concrete columns, the cross-sectional area of the steel varies between 1% and 4% of the gross cross-sectional area of the column. If at the latter quantity, there is serious congestion around reinforcement splices and the like. Walls normally have much less than columns. Nevertheless, the amount of steel does look very large indeed.

Be a little more expansive. Even the so-called experts are guessing, even though there is some idiotic shit being talked here since testing a theory is the only way to be 95% confident. Only by constructing an exact replica of the 911 structure and ramming powerful jets into it and having all sorts of sensors could the effects of the attack truly be tested. Hence the conjecture.

From the Oz, Terry McCrann getting stuck into the government.

Qantas-Qatar debacle exposes government’s dysfunction
TERRY MCCRANN

The Catherine King Qantas-Qatar debacle is a searing pointer to the much broader and deeper dysfunction of the Albanese Labor Government, and that is so increasingly reminiscent of its Whitlam predecessor.

There are three core elements of this already extremely damaging dysfunction – damaging obviously to the government politically, but already doing serious damage to Australia and to you.

The first is the absentee leader.
No prime minister has spent more time out of the country in his or her first 15 months than Mr Albanese. Indeed, it isn’t even close.

It even feels he has effectively relocated from The Lodge, and of course the Harbourside mansion, to our Downunder Airforce One; making only occasional visits back to our shores.

It’s not simply the case that: when the cat’s away, the mice – and boy, there sure are plenty of them in the Albanese cabinet – don’t simply play but run wild.

When he is occasionally back, he’s anyway investing all his time and political energy on a vanity – and now, clearly, about to fail – project like The Voice.
To borrow from an earlier political era: how many chickens will The Voice put in any ovens?

No, it’s made worse, so much worse, by the second element – the way, by design or default, each cabinet minister has been given their head to run off on any frolic they care to.

We have a government – and a reality for 26m Australians, heading very rapidly to 30m – that is defined by an energy minister actively embarked on destroying our electricity system, and an IR minister punitively re-regulating industrial relations.

Does the globe-trotting PM care about the consequences of any of this? Does he even know about them?

Sure, they might individually be broadly in line with agreed government policy. Like net zero.

But where’s any sense of co-ordination? Of Overall cabinet and especially prime ministerial control?

That brings us to a third element – the MIA, missing-in-action, Treasurer.

Arguably the most crucial element in the political and policy successes of the Hawke and Howard governments were the two treasurers, Keating and Costello.

First, by keeping an iron grip on the purse-strings; but also in sticking their noses into every other cabinet minister’s business.

Do you really thunk, that Keating would have been content to have “not been consulted” on the Qatar decision? As he would have seen the range of broader issues it raised?

What have we really seen from this treasurer so far?

A budget surplus? Yes, by merely riding the massive surge in commodity exports and prices.

And of course his appointment of the RBA deputy to succeed the current governor; like every other treasurer bar two have done?

It was quite clear before the election that the success – both political and in policy terms – was going to revolve around incoming treasurer Chalmers.

That’s of course, success or failure. He had to deliver the hard edge and the control or nobody would.

And that was before we knew the PM was only going to be in Australia on weekends, so to speak.

It’s a disastrous cocktail. It’s only going to get worse.

If governments were serious about disinformation they would have had a network special on how two planes full of fuel slamming into buildings just might cause the things to collapse.

Doc
I believe you are simply being your negative self. This is a contemporary take on small-talk. People used to chatter endlessly at the kitchen table or in the tavern back in the day. Do you honestly believe that people didn’t opine about difficult issues back then but had no idea WTF they were talking about?

There have always been ignorant nitwits in the pubs pontificating on things they knew nothing about. Informed people ignored it. The problems arise when the ‘elites’ are also ignorant nitwits. Such is now the case.

even had the buildings not collapsed, it would “send a message”

yep

and the message was ‘you bring your war to us, and we’ll bring it back to you’

Apparently, Sevastopol port is burning as we type

things are not good

KD, I’m not a hater, but as I recall the Bodyline Series was 1932-33.

A slip of the keyboard?

9/11, Oklahoma City bombing were really done with space lasers, FMD this is dumb and sick

Oooooh, they were so done with space lasers. So were:

The 2004 Indonesian tsunami
Collingwood’s 2018 GF loss to West Coast
Black Saturday (1939 and 2009)
The land bridge between Australia and PNG
Molly Meldrum’s ladder ‘accident’
The 1970 West Gate Bridge collapse
Hiroshima and Nagasaki, 1945
Derryn Hinch’s repeated liver failures
Moses parting the Red Sea
Bodyline, 1931-32

God, you people. Educate yourselves.

It’s an educational failure.

Bit of a worry that STEM uni entrants can’t now add 1/2 + 1/3.

We’re finished. All civilisations fall apart eventually; all we can do is enjoy the decadence.

Mine is a Grant Burge Cabernet Merlot 2021. Cheap and yummy. I await the end of the world in fire, or something.

(Just gave a lump of mince to southern mapgie male, it’s right on dusk here at the Cafe. His kids might be starving! Not. Life goes on.)

Dean Obeidallah insisted the former president die in prison for daring to challenge the 2020 election to send a message to the public that “you can’t do this.”

I’m sure American voters are getting the message, they better vote for Democrats and if anyone questions the results they will die in jail. Have they built their Lubyanka yet or will they have political prisons like Saddam Hussein?
