Barramundi is over-rated.

Reasonably easy to farm I believe. If you’re going to eat farmed fish there are worse options out there. In a hippy phase I had a look at an aquaponics set up but it all looked too hard. A mate has one apparently.

As for the abomination that they call smoked salmon … desshpiccable!

Quite like smoked salmon, as in a bento box on rice, with soy sauce. Or a smoked salmon and gherkin sanga, with a bit of Tobasco for zest. I find fresh salmon a little too oily and heavy, but grilled with salt and pepper it’s not bad.

Then there’s how Mitt Romney eats salmon.

Mitt Romney roasted for bizarre way he eats salmon (15 Sep)

‘He didn’t especially like salmon, but found that if he put it on a hamburger bun and smothered it in ketchup, it made for a serviceable meal’

A very weird guy!

Premier Chris Minns announces net zero freight policy on the Central Coast (Ncl local news, 3 Oct)

Transport was the focus for the New South Wales Premier – headed to the Central Coast today.

It came with a nod to a Berkeley Vale company leading the charge on electric vehicles… and a sweetener for freight companies to take up the technology.

If you see horses and carts delivering to Coles stores you will know why.

Raising short term interest rates any higher will wreck the Economy.

Explain how given how much commercial and residential lending is originated in bonds which the vast majority of are foreign funded.

The reality is unless we engage in QE we really can’t alter the credit market in Australia significantly.

Funny how the Big 4 Banks keep putting up the variable rate of interest on those mortgages every time the RBA puts up the Cash Rate then. Maybe they are price gouging and keeping their margins high.

Buy Australian Bank Shares and reap those dividends with nice franking credits.

I have eaten wild caught barra, air freighted up to Goroka from the coast.

If fish was a steak, and a very good one, that was it. It came with crayfish, prawns and crabs. An exchange for broccoli, lettuce and beans, grown in the Highlands but hen’s teeth on the coast.

A worthy exchange!

I love to eat snapper, flathead, cod (when in UK), salmon and ocean trout.

Mum used to fry fish, and the only fish she used was flathead. Flathead, once cheap and plentiful, is now dear and scarce. I also love eating snapper. Fried fish, Jewish style, is always served cold. Quite scrumptious.

The best place to buy fish in Sydney is Faros Seafood in Marrickville. It’s where Mum, my sister and I go to buy fish. I highly recommend it, it’s much better than the fish markets at Pyrmont.

Day 1 of pre-poll – and the Yes side has been spotted being tricky at pre-poll sites – the colour of their signage is just like the AECs – what a coincidence.

https://www.aec.gov.au/media/2023/10-03.htm

Media advice: Purple campaign signage

Updated: 3 October 2023
The AEC today became aware of campaign signage outside of at least one early voting centre for the 2023 referendum that could potentially mislead voters about the source of a campaign message.

To be absolutely clear – the signs were erected by the Yes23 campaign, not the AEC. The signs featured the legislatively required authorisation statement. However, the signage prominently used white writing against a background that is a similar shade of purple to the AEC’s longstanding branding and were erected outside at least one early voting centre, in close proximity to the AEC’s ‘voting centre’ signage.

This combination of using purple and white colours in proximity to AEC signage could mislead a voter about the source of the signage, and by extension, the source of the message on the signage. Accordingly, when we were alerted to this signage the AEC requested the Yes23 campaign to rectify the situation by ensuring their signs are not placed in the proximity of AEC voting centre signs. The Yes23 campaign has agreed to comply with this request.

While the AEC has been clear over a number of years in communicating our preference that campaigners do not use the combination of colours purple and white in such a way that could be misleading, the AEC does not have any legal authority to prevent people from using particular colours. The AEC also does not have the legal authority – except in very limited circumstances – to prevent people from campaigning outside six metres from the entrance to a polling place. While AEC officers cannot remove signage that could be misleading regarding the source of the message, we expect our request to the authoriser of the signage to be complied with.

Requests from the AEC to campaigners to adjust or rectify concerns regarding signage outside of voting centres occurs frequently at every electoral event. The AEC’s experience is that, in the vast majority of cases, the authoriser of the signage complies with an AEC request.

Use of the colour purple on campaign signage has been the subject of a previous court judgement. This 2019 matter is summarised in a fact sheet on the AEC website.

https://www.aec.gov.au/FAQs/files/21-1579-factsheet-purple-signage-02.pdf

If you read this factsheet (linked) you can blame the SFLs for this one – the precedent was set in 2019, where the Liberal campaign in Chisolm (Victardia) had purple signs with Chinese writing – but the court (of disputed returns) ultimately decided that there was no statute or rule that said the use of the colour was illegal, however deceptive it might be.

Let me elaborate as to my post made at 7:09 PM.

1. From Jun 2016 to Jun 2018 for the variable mortgage rates moving up (not much though, especially for owner occupiers).

2. The actual data isn’t easy to obtain if you’re only looking at charts.

This wasn’t easy to find.

https://www.housingdata.gov.au/visualisation/financial-market/housing-loan-interest-rates

You can see over that period that variable rates went up.

“”The” mortgage rate” reported on by popular sites like trading economics is actually a 3 year fixed rate.

Barramundi indisputably is a fine meat. Inexpertly cooked it may not seem to be. Therein may lie the root of many statements that Barramundi “isn’t all that good”.

Most fish is fantastic straight over the side of the boat & onto the stove. Most reef fish are very nice indeed. My father will eat nothing but Coral Trout, Red Emperor, & so on. Can’t recall him ever enthusing much about Barra, however he is downright scornful of cold water fish & flatly refuses to even entertain the idea of eating some.

This is of course most unfair. After a lifetime of eating reef fish, I had an opportunity to eat something out of the cold water of the south (SA caught)
Totally different to reef fish, & very bluddee nice.

Barramundi (just a perch or something really) has a reputation as the kind of eating fish – this reputation is not without good reason. Whether the title of #1 fish is deserved, that’s similar to a discussion about whether Grange Hermitage is superior to Hill of Grace.

I had a very pleasant morning. I had to go into my little town to pay bills at the PO. Had a great chat with the ladies about the Voice scam. They are both extremely well informed and not a snowflakes they will be voting Yes.

I then went to the Rural Supplies place and was stoked to see a bowl of campaign pins with NO on them. Pinned one on my shirt so fast it raised a laugh. Had another good chat with the ladies and gents there about the screech. All NO voters. YAY!

There have been two yes placards stuck in windows on the main street, no more which was good to see. Thankfully the little Public School has not succumbed. There are many more NO placards as I drive around, including a large one in a paddock near the “Keep Transgrid off Our Farms”.

As I was driving home, a gentleman was standing on the tray of his LandCruiser stapling NO placards to a power pole. He had been working his way down the main drag. Blew the horn and gave him a cheer and a wave. Received a big thumbs up in return. Country people take no sh*t. 😀

Purple People Misleader?
https://www.skynews.com.au/australia-news/voice-to-parliament/yes23-selling-purple-merchandise-ahead-of-voice-referendum-despite-australian-electoral-commission-warning-against-use-of-the-colour-after-2019-court-decision/news-story/b05f68ef032ddacb456d68d3e45b6940

The Australian Electoral Commission has said it does “not own purple”, as the Yes23 camp continue to sell Voice to Parliament merchandise with that shade after hours earlier being told to remove signage that could “potentially mislead” voters.

The photo is rather illustrative.

Email from Senator Babett today says:

Following the 2019 Federal Election, the Court of Disputed Returns examined the use of purple campaign signage similar to the brand style of the AEC in the Divisions of Chisholm and Kooyong. The court found the signs were likely to mislead or deceive a voter in relation to the casting of a vote, contravening Section 329 of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 (the Electoral Act).

The AEC didn’t have to “own” the colour in 2019 for the material to be ruled misleading.
What else? Sue in court for voters being misled after the referendum is over??
Perhaps the AEC was told to be “colour blind” and took it too far.
The AEC now has worse optics than five dollar sunglasses.

There are open market operations but it doesn’t only trade FX.

So what you’re saying is that you’d allow the exchange rate to take the hit. Okay, but here’s the problem. The exchange rate isn’t as important to the economy as the interest rate. Of course the exchange rate is important, so don’t get me wrong, but the credit markets are far more so, and I don’t think it would be a good idea to try and stabilize the economy. I don’t think it can be done, and then there are the labor and goods & services markets to consider.

You have a far more stable situation with a gold peg, I think, not that I would advocate a peg.

You still haven’t answered the question, though. Let’s say we had COVID lockdowns mark 11. The economy is a mere skeleton, and everything is tanking. What would a fixed interest rate of 6% do to the system?

If you want to peg the FX rate you can’t control the CB interest rate.

You’re right, I know. It’s one or the other. However, with a gold peg, interest rates would be more stable, no?

I’m suggesting as a thought experiment (sort of) that a completely endogenous CB rate isn’t reliant on a pegged FX rate. The benefit is it is around the long term mean and avoids excesses and poor credibility issues.

Okay. But in the past 15 years, we’ve seen some pretty significant downside dips in GDP. One time, through the GFC and then through COVID lockdowns. The mean may look okay until you take into account the significant drop in nominal GDP over short periods of time. The natural rate moves too.

As for the credibility of an endogenous rate, that’s only real problem. In my ideal, if market cost of wholesale credit goes below 6%, then there is no CB lending. If that and retail rates go way above, it goes up and up. The FX rates will adjust either way.

The FX rate would certainly adjust, but like now, you need the central bank to maintain the o/n at its suggested peg.

If you’re arguing that CB policy should adjust minimum wages down to the market clearing rate, you’re going to have an even worse rear vision mirror problem.

I don’t see how you can essentially lock in a rate at any level without allowing labor markets to adjust one way or another. I don’t believe the exchange rate would be able to counteract the impact.

What if you set policy based on data vector X but the reservation wages exceed the minimum wage (vector X’)?

Example?

You could assume that MW growth is too high compared to prevailing MP. All you end up doing is push the reservation wage up again! This would make labour supply anaemic or prolong a post stimulus and inflation era of bottlenecks.

I can’t see how you can avoid it with a pegged interest rate.

My take on raising interest rates is that it’s deliberately a blunt mechanism designed to reduce demand and make everyone more efficient, in a perfect world that means an incentive for government to ensure markets are efficient, not distorted. Leftits, simply don’t seem to care, they are quite happy for markets to fail, for populations to go hungry and broke, for people to lose their wealth, because that makes them dependent on government. They see it as a win/win, as long as a compliant media and unobservant population and feckless opposition all let them do it.

I’d add, that all the problems causing inflation can be slated to government distorting markets in one way or another. If all the markets are distorted by government, what hope interest rates will work when the government won’t change the distortions and no one will talk about it?

My take on raising interest rates is that it’s deliberately a blunt mechanism designed to reduce demand and make everyone more efficient, in a perfect world that means an incentive for government to ensure markets are efficient, not distorted.

It has to be “blunt” in order to work its way through the economy. The only other alternative in trying to control prices would be price controls and that’s the Soviet model, which means feast of famine. Also, the financial markets the most efficient way of knowing what’s going on in the economy. We have nothing else really. The conduct of monetary policy isn’t just to reduce demand, it’s also used to raise demand by adjusting the cost of credit and indirectly the price of money. Basically, the central bank’s job is to maintain a stable nominal GDP.

Leftits, simply don’t seem to care, they are quite happy for markets to fail, for populations to go hungry and broke, for people to lose their wealth, because that makes them dependent on government. They see it as a win/win, as long as a compliant media and unobservant population and feckless opposition all let them do it.

Okay, but I don’t see monetary policy that way.

I’d add, that all the problems causing inflation can be slated to government distorting markets in one way or another.

Often times, but not always. How about demand and supply shocks for instance.

If all the markets are distorted by government, what hope interest rates will work when the government won’t change the distortions and no one will talk about it?

There is what called the natural rate of interest (look it up) that should tell you how distorted things at some point in time.

Voting law reform, NOW.

Is the yes campaign saying that the advice tendered in Canberra over at least the past 40 yeas=rs was useless? If so, why do they have many of those who tendered that advice (Pearson, Dodsons, and the rest of the urban “professional” aborigines) as their spokesthings?

JC – from the ABC, of all people:

Eight mayors in far north Queensland’s Cape York region have launched a scathing attack on Indigenous leader Noel Pearson, saying they want him less involved in their affairs.

In a joint statement, eight mayors including those from Aurukun, Mapoon, Lockhart River, Kowanyama, Aurukun, Napranum and the Northern Peninsula area, say they did not want Mr Pearson to have any more control over funding, policy or service delivery on Cape York.

And:

Napranum Mayor Philemon Mene says Mr Pearson never consulted local government leaders about the plan.

“Work with us, rather than trying to be the Mayor of Cape York,” he said.

More on Pearson – this time from the Guardian:

The upheaval around a single primary school in Aurukun, Cape York, has evidently been a bewildering experience for Noel Pearson.

What began with an evacuation of teachers over safety concerns in the outside community escalated to the Queensland government contemplating a full takeover of the largest of Pearson’s “lighthouse schools”.

The government review followed community calls for Pearson’s Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy (CYAAA) to be stripped of the school contract and the scrapping of the centrepiece of the education platform – the rigidly scripted, US-imported, highly controversial literacy and numeracy program called Direct Instruction.

And:

A takeover of Aurukun would have represented the first significant public policy defeat for the Indigenous leader, a rollback of a key plank of his welfare reform agenda, which has spawned its own sizeable private bureaucracy.

Pearson, putting himself in the shoes of Jesus Christ about to face his betrayers by invoking the “gloom of the Garden of Gethsemane”, began launching salvos against an array of critics.

Some of these flew wide of the mark.

Pearson got millions to ‘revolutionise’ schooling:

One school staffer said it was “completely Americanised”, with students learning more about US states and holidays such as Independence Day and Thanksgiving than Australia.

Another said: “The language program is totally out of context, it doesn’t relate to Aurukun. Pictures and stories are about America. The information doesn’t spark motivation.”

And:

What is remarkable about the review is the recurring voices critical of a narrow focus on DI – not from those Pearson has characterised as political enemies of an important education reform – but from within his very own school and the community that wants to reconnect with it.

The actual schools within the actual communities want Pearson and his shit ideas, and his own bureaucracy out.

Troubling.

Rukshan:

3 Oct 2023 #voteoften
The AEC recently replied to a post on X, stating, “If someone votes at two different polling places within their electorate and places their formal vote in the ballot box at each polling place, their vote is counted.”

“We cannot remove the vote from the count because, due to the secrecy of the ballot, we have no way of knowing which ballot paper belongs to which person. However, the number of double votes received is incredibly low, and usually related to mental health or age.”

This response came in reaction to a post by a Labor MP who “mistakenly” used #voteoften in a post on X encouraging people to vote Yes.

Consequently, this has sparked a considerable amount of online discussion and raised concerns about the entire electoral process. However, is this simply another instance of the AEC being ineffective and inconsistent in their communication on online platforms?

Should they even maintain a presence on social media if they cannot provide clear communication and ensure the removal of personal/political bias from their employees who are replying to posts?

For extra context on the multiple voting the AEC has also said that “The instances of multiple marks have never been of a significant volume and never more than the margin in an election. We have electronic certified lists across all pre-polls and continuing to many on-the-day polling places with real-time mark-off of the roll.”

AEC Says You Can Vote Twice?

Well, they’ve got the swinging vote now…

Key voice architects say the referendum campaign has tapped into “a deep well of historical racism” and warn that Indigenous people will need to work “very closely” with politicians in the event of a Yes vote to ensure voice legislation “realises their ambitions for greater control over their lives”.

In an article for world-leading medical journal The Lancet, Marcia Langton and Tom Calma join fellow Indigenous academics Ian Anderson, Yin Paradies and Ray Lovett in cautioning a No vote will have a “profoundly negative effect” on Indigenous Australians who have worked on reconciliation for nearly two decades.

Obviously, in that event, blame needs to be apportioned…

It comes as leading Yes campaigner Noel Pearson said a failed referendum would be “a disaster for all of us” and there was no plan B to improve the lives of Indigenous Australians, while voice supporter Frank Brennan said the poll had “created a hell of a mess” and sent race relations in Australia backwards.

With less than two weeks until polling day and early voting open across the country, Anthony Albanese on Tuesday declared the referendum was “certainly winnable” and undecided voters he had spoken to thought the question they would be asked on constitutional recognition through a voice was “fair enough”.

But they were really trying to be nice…

Acknowledging that the voice was a compromise position for Indigenous leaders after “many conservative politicians would not accept the inclusion of rights in the Australian Constitution”, Professors Anderson, Paradies, Langton, Lovett and Calma say there are early signs the referendum process is causing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people higher levels of racism.

What, exactly, does “causing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people higher levels of racism” mean?

Lots more absolute hilarity at the Oz

A little shiftiness there, I think. It reads (well to me at least) as if Indigenous Australians as a group have been working on what they are pretending will be reconciliation. It should read “… on those indigenous Australians…”

Those Aborigines have grown fat like maggots on a gangrenous wound, and as long as they can keep themselves in place to gnaw into the warm rotting flesh and slurp on the sweet black ooze they will keep this wound as gangrenous as they can.

Everything about Noel Pearson is contrived. He’s a ham actor.

His biography should be titled: The Bully in the Pork Pie Hat.

Sadly, he’s just a mendacious grifter – might not have started out that way but that’s where he’s ended up. He was educated by the Baptists, he’s smart and talks a good game, has been courted by both Labor and Liberal to take a seat in Parliament, his hubristic pride and malice is most unbecoming and boy does it show.

If Emirates and Other middle eastern airlines are receiving subsidies for fuel from the royal families – this is distortion which does not reflect reality.
Over time the price will increase due to lack of competition.
As this is a subsidy I would be charging Emirates extra to land here to make up the fuel discount.
This is similar to de industrialisation but this is not due to the price of labour but materials.
Western airlines will have to lobby for this additional tax when Middle Eastern Airlines land in their airports.
