    Now!

Castle doctrine and stand your ground, as well.
The problem is that the police have a monopoly on legal force in Australia, and they will defend that monopoly right even if it costs you your life.

And yet, despite fighting to protect that monopoly, they apparently have no legal responsibility to protect unarmed citizens from attack by criminals.

Dover, I think it’s a matter of will and power. Diplomacy and politics are fine but you have to have the might behind it when persuasion doesn’t work. The current admin refuses to use its military and financial power but that doesn’t mean that another admin will not do so.

Firstly, maybe we have just to accept that on occasion the failure to persuade reflects on the end itself. Secondly, its hard to argue that this administration has refused to use its military and financial power given what has passed since Feb ’22; in fact the opposite appears the case and it has not only fallen short of its aims but dramatically reduced its potential and prestige.

they apparently have no legal responsibility to protect unarmed citizens from attack by criminals

Because that would require to them to:
    A. Engage in a potentially useful activity
    B. Possibly endanger their pointless existences.

And we couldn’t have any of that, Cats.

Best add insult to injury by tolerating them strutting around in those ridiculous uniforms, hideously overweight, hoovering Maccas and donuts while some sh*tsack is out robbing your home.

Dover, you are correct with respect to the current US administration however, this will change if Trump wins the election next year. Even if it’s not Trump but another Republican, the reaction and response will be different to the Biden/Obama regime

Not sure if anyone has already brought this up but noticed that Oz media that i read are, studiously, avoiding any mention …..
Late last week, Thursday/maybe Friday the US Congress voted on and passed a law removing the right/power of the President to withdraw from NATO and only a majority vote of Congress can make that decision in future ..
Which means, in essence, any tinpot Euro dispute involving NATO can be used to call upon US military involvement .. US boots on the ground in some two bob watch minor Euro squabble ……

Why can’t they just speak Australian like we all do?

Because we have the flattest vowels on the planet. Not a skill picked up by foreigners – for example, see the many woeful attempts by hollyweirdos to imitate Ozzie accents – and yes, streep you evil ol’ slag – I’m looking at you. Which is also why we can imitate accented English effortlessly.

In high school I had an English friend and an American friend* all of us recent arrivals from our own parts of the world. I also had Australian friends yet funnily enough I kept picking up the English accent from the English friend. I couldn’t work out why. Twenty years later on a holiday in London I once again started using my English accent, my daughters and husband were bemused.

*Even more serendipitous, my father worked in the same company as the parents of my American friend. Eastern suburbs must have been a smaller place in those days.

Just been watching a doco on SBS about Clive Davis, head of CBS Records when they signed huge acts like Janis Joplin, Santana, Chicago, Dionne Warwick, Miles Davis, Whitney Huston etc etc.

Clive (whose adopted name is not his family’s original) was a Jewish man who trained as a lawyer in New York, and through a series of happenstances, ended up in the record business. He had a great ear for talent and wound up running CBS records, then still tied up with Mitch Mitchell and his whistlers. After attending the Monterey festival, where his spine tingled, off he went.

What struck me was the names of the people he did business with. It was steeped in steins and bergs and the names of precious stones. They were mostly Jews.

The history of the C20th entertainment industry, and the development of its music and culture, would be a comparatively slim volume without American Jews. So sad that many of their descendants have betrayed them to be fashionable Leftists like their vacuous Hollywood pals.

As a dual NZ Australian citizen who can talk Un Zud if I think about it, I would actually say there is a real, physical difference in the mouth and against the palette when speaking in either accent.

My most natural accent is now Australian having been here 20 years, although I have the long ‘a’ in ‘chance’ and ‘aunt’ to mark me out.

The simple truth is – nobody cares about fireworks.

People know there are such things as fireworks, and that there are people who set the fireworks off. People also know they can see fireworks on the picture wireless.

Further, people also know that there is little or no chance of fireworks going off in their immediate vicinity, and/or in your eye socket*. Therefore, the only thrill of going anywhere near fireworks is to see the pretty colours and hear the bangs.

Anyone silly enough to queue and then stake out viewing sites for such things, and then sit there for eight hours or more – for 15 minutes of colourbangs – deserves to be bitterly disappointed.
