Damn straight. In the 70’s they looked back to the 50’s and early 60’s as the last period before the turbulence of the later 60’s when so much was trashed to ‘free’ society up for an idiotic new society. Boring old square ideas like monogamy, family, civic responsibility, decorum, and so on were out of date. It wasn’t so much the details of that earlier time as much as a mode of life they represented.
A bit like the way a smiling face perfectly encapsulates the emotion of happiness, or a crying face sadness. (Note, they don’t ‘symbolise’ these things but they resonate such that a person smiling or crying can affect our own emotions.) Those images from that earlier time carried with them the feeling of security, community, respectfulness, the counsel of tradition, and so on.
I liked the 80’s for the over-the-top exuberant shaking off of the pessimism and guilt that had percolated into areas of the 70’s. There was a shameless defiance in the 80’s.
But for me the 90’s and early 2000’s was a great time – before victimhood became the reserve currency, when politics was less ubiquitous and less savage, the music was still good, comedy shows were self-effacing and played on the quirks of the human condition, and fashions more of a ‘classic’ timbre.
I am in no rush to return to the 90’s. I doubt I would be happy there because I realise how much I rely upon things not available then, but there are somethings I would like to see re-emerge.
I am quietly optimistic about the collapse of woke culture and all the DEI, oppressor/oppressed cultural Marxism BS. The US is where this all starts and the advent of another Trump Presidency which will tear into all the straitjacketing progressive crap could unleash a renaissance like the one occasioned by Reagan after Carter – but turned up to 11.
And, please, no one with the reflexive ‘Trump won’t be President, the Dems will cheat!’ That is just an attempt to ‘give up with style’. The people who bleat it have no hope to offer. Sure the Dems will cheat, but they are no longer confident. One strategy after another has turned against them and Trump’s team is already wargaming scenarios, so I am not despairing yet.

Yep, I was a regular at the Silver Slipper, the Red Parrot and Club Bayview. Sunday arvo was always the session at Steve’s in Nedlands. Used to go to lots of live gigs….Midnight Oil, Split Enz, Nick Cave and so on.
I agree that parts of the 90s was good along with the early 2000s. I think the advent of social media has caused a lot of the rot and polarisation.

The National President of Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association has spoken out again on behalf of the organisation to object to calls to remove prayer rooms from schools across the country.
Speaking at Nasir Mosque in Bibra Lake on Saturday, Adnan Qadir said he was concerned that knee-jerk reactions like banning prayer rooms would only be counterproductive in the fight against violent extremism.
“We must not let fear dictate our actions but instead focus on constructive measures to address concerns,” Mr Qadir said.
“The motto that our youth association adheres to is ‘Love for All, Hatred for None’ and we firmly believe that accelerating our efforts of education and dialogue are the most effective tools in combating any extremist views that people may be prone to harbouring.”

An evening in Oviedo…
It’s some sort of festival here, looks like an ode to dairy – lots of “cow themed” products on display, the little booth-style market in the cathedral forecourt replete with cheese of every description. Even the fountain runs “white”!
Children everywhere, the balloon sellers doing a brisk trade in unicorns, pokemons and even Blueys.
Still a bit early at 7pm, we find a nice table, purchase a bottle of silky smooth red and settle in to watch the passing parade. And what a parade it is! Reminiscent of Verona, everyone is out in their best clothes, walking up and down, admiring the shops, meeting friends. Some locals dressed in folkloric costume make a brilliant splash – the men in tight pants and funny peaked caps, ladies in dirndls, crisp white blouses and damask corsets. A few have a version of the bagpipe slung over their shoulders.
A line forms at a nearby shop, snaking its way up the street. People are taking numbers from one of those supermarket number machines. I can’t for the life of me work out what they are all lining up for. After dinner, as the line had dwindled, went over for a better look. It was an ice cream shop, and more. The window had trays piled with crystallised fruit, nuts and chocolates. Naturally, I tried the shop speciality, a hazelnut ice cream in a cup. The Beloved, in his greed, opted for a double cone.
I dread visiting my lying scales when I get home.

What I loved about the 80s & 90s – the relative lack of tourists (particularly groups) – in just about every nook and cranny of the globe we went to.
We also did a lot of outback travel – when you could actually set up your camp without coming back to find yourself surrounded by others.
Same for restaurants – they were just emerging as interesting places – not the social measure that they have become.
On decades, it has to be the seventies for me. The decade of growing up, listening to music, falling in and out of love, and then discovering that I wanted to marry my best friend. And he wanted to marry me.
The clothes, the freedom, the deep conviction that anything, anything at all was possible, and I could do it.
The eighties were the decade of responsibility – young children, house building, relocation to PNG. The decade I became a proper, boring adult.

I finally figured why google search may be with us for longer and maybe AI will not be the the final death knell of the search engine.
Google search is free and the cost of running it are negligible compared to AI. Whereas AI models are very expensive to operate, and signaling that for this reason need to go on a subscription model. It’s estimated that AI will eventually demand…. get this… 35 times the amount of energy currently being consumed in the US. Huge. Bigly.
What’s this all mean. We’re screwed on the tech front as we don’t have the energy to supply any innovation to this technology. The dude who started ChatGPT ins currently investing heavily in modular nuclear energy. We better hope demand for resources keeps up.

Cattle rustling: Police charge three men with alleged theft of 306 cattle from Louisa Downs station

Police have charged three men over the elaborate cattle rustling heist of hundreds of livestock worth more than $250,000 from a station in the Kimberley region.
The 306 cattle were allegedly stolen from Louisa Downs Pastoral Aboriginal Corporation, a large cattle station midway between Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek, and trucked to a property in the Northern Territory in October 2022.
It is alleged between October 12 and October 24 of that year one of the men organised an illegal muster of the station by setting up camp then using earth moving machinery to create a road near the neighbouring Mount Pierre Pastoral Aboriginal Corporation station.
From there it is alleged a portable set of cattle yards were erected at the location to facilitate mustering without permission.
It is further alleged one of the charged men organised the muster by using two helicopters and a ground crew, which used bull catching buggies. The 306 cattle mustered from Mount Pierre Station were then trucked to a set of cattle yards were tagged as coming from Louisa Downs.
Following a request from officers attached to the WA Police Rural Crime Team, which was formed to tackle theft and other crimes in the State’s $9 billion farming industry, NT Police executed an Extra-Territorial search warrant at a property on the Adelaide River on January 18 this year.
Rural Crime Team officers were able to identify that some of the cattle at the property had been sold and exported.
Police said the average price for the cattle sold at the time was $827.09 per head and placed to the total value of the cattle stolen at $253,089.54.

When we lived on the Parramatta River in the 90’s, the park next door was the scene of a huge Muzzy picnic every Sunday.
The men would sit in the shelters being served by their property, and the women sat on the grass inside a circle of prams.
Every Monday someone would complain to the council about the scattered garbage and food scraps but nothing ever happened.

Last night I received an email from a local rabbi. It was an email sent to many, many people, after Shabbat. You might remember how only one week ago, Sleazy the Slug, after seven months of being AWOL, finally paid a visit to a synagogue here in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. I have no doubt that this slug of a PM, when he appeared at the synagogue, already knew how Australia would vote on Friday, but of course he didn’t reveal such a fact when he visited the synagogue, instead he played chaste and virtuous and demure, and he did what he does best….he lied. Oh and he touchingly blamed the university protests on ‘Trots’, LOL….as well as we all know this slug of a PM knows a lot about Trots, Bronny Bishop is quite correct with her description of him being ‘Albo the Trot’.
Anyway, given he visited the shul and sat down at a table with a group of eminent rabbis, many of whom are very well educated in both Jewish and non-Jewish law, many of whom I know personally, Sleazy the Slug clearly engaged in some classic obfuscation and deceit. So, given the lies, the obfuscation and so on, last night the rabbi wrote the following words in his epistle…

Today in synagogues around the world we study from the Ethics of the Fathers, specifically chapter 2, where we encounter a poignant line…

How timely that this passage was read today! It is comforting to know that many decent Australians are equally dismayed and want us to know that we are not alone.

Some members of an advisory group set up by Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus are urging the federal government to crackdown on “inappropriate” defence counsel questioning in rape trials, allow the use of prerecorded evidence for complainants, and introduce specialist sexual assault courts.
The calls also include the consideration of a new “civil” approach to rape cases, where a defendant would be compelled to give evidence and the standard of proof would be lowered to the balance of probabilities, in a submission to the Australian Law Reform Commission’s wide-ranging inquiry into how the justice system handles sexual violence.
Queensland law lecturer and sexual abuse victim Amanda-Jane George, who is compiling the submission along with some other members of Mr Dreyfus’ lived-experience expert advisory group, told The Australian the sexual abuse of women and girls is “the next pandemic”.
“Globally, one in three women will experience some sort of sexual violence,” she said. “Those statistics are even more challenging when you start to look at women and girls who face intersectional issues – First Nations women and girls, culturally and linguistically diverse women and girls, communities with disability, elderly.”
The expert group has been conducting quarterly meetings with the inquiry’s commissioners, former Victorian Supreme Court judge Marcia Neave and South Australia District Court judge Liesl Kudelka, to discuss how to better outcomes for victims of sexual violence.
In her submission to the inquiry, Dr George will encourage the commissioners to investigate a series of initiatives, including:

7pm here in Vic. Cold night in Victoria and other southern states. Renewable energy (wind and solar) struggling to provide a meagre 6% of customer demand across the five states. SA, the renewable “icon”, is starting to burn dirty fuel oil to keep the lights on and Victoria is down to a paltry 3% wind energy. No solar in Vic given it’s dark. Brown coal is doing the heavy lifting at 76%, Similarly in NSW where black is coal keeping the lights and heaters on providing 76% of energy. Qld is is being fueled by 78% coal. Tassie has its hydro running at about 77%. We are riding a knife edge with energy supply.

I’m not sure. As you know, I have no time for Putin. However, he must be mightily pissed off that the Europeans are supplying armaments to Ukraine, which they use to attack Russian territory. It’s not farfetched to think he sees this as basically attacks by the Europeans?

You have to ask: what does Russia gains by engaging in acts of sabotage in Europe that could possibly allow NATO to actively enter the war, particularly now as the tide appears to turn against Ukraine? The cost/benefit there is largely on the cost side. Alternatively, what does NATO gain by a false flag operation that allows it to enter actively into the war, particularly now as the tide appears to turn against Ukraine? Not without risks but the benefits appear more strongly here than they do in the first.
The only thing I could point to is retribution, thereby teaching the Europeans a lesson. But as I said, I think it’s highly unlikely.

I think Russia would be mightily disappointed right now. Two years in with thousands dead and they held every card in the pack when they started the war. They chose the time, locations, scale, weapons to use, strategy, execution of the entire operation. All Ukraine could do was be prepared to respond to the unknown. All this in a war most observers believed would last a couple of months at best because of the overwhelming military superiority of the Russians. Frustration may be creeping in. No sane Russian would want a full on war with NATO…
Most certainly Putin expected it to be a short war. The beginning of the invasion was a disaster for the Russian regime.

I’ve said it before, the hope was to get them to negotiate neutrality by a show of force, with the fallback being a war of attrition largely played out in the south. If you want to determine which of these the Russians thought most likely, you should look at where the majority of the forces were deployed. Once you embark on such a operation, it takes on a life of its own.

It’s obvious you wouldn’t believe any of that, however leaving these accounts aside it became evident because of the Russian rout at the beginning, the invasion was badly thought out and very under-supplied suggesting the Russian regime believed it would be a short war.
But do you think Putin believed at the time, the war would still be going?
Initially it was a special military operation which suggests that the expectation was for a quick result. If they had been thinking of a long war they would have started with a full assault.
