That’s why I use DD-Go as a search engine most of the time. Google is better in many ways no doubt, but it annoys the crapola out of me with the constant identification requests.

Did the Vancouver to Alaska and back through the Inside Passage and on the outside on the way back.

Excellent. Calving glaciers, orca pods, trips ashore into towns with no roads in and out; salmon spawning; old railways up past gorges with 100 year old horse skeletons in them. Well worth your time.

Queensland public transport services to be slashed to 50 cents (Sky News, 26 May)

Translink public transport services in Queensland will be slashed to 50 cents from August 5 no matter how far people travel.

The cost-of-living measure aims to ease gridlock on roads and increase the number of people using public transport.

The six-month measure is expected to cost the state budget $150 million but is projected to save commuters thousands.

Yeah sure, nothing at all to do with a certain rapidly arriving election. Such cynical hypocrisy.

UK Army conscription to come back with National Service compulsory under Rishi Sunak in bombshell election announcement (25 May)

TEENAGERS will be signed up for compulsory National Service under bold new plans unveiled by Rishi Sunak.

All 18-year-olds will have to take part in some kind of civic duty by enrolling for 12 months in the armed forces.

Or they could instead opt to join the police, fire service or another body that does work in the community for one weekend every month.

You’d reflexively say that it will go down like a lead balloon, but perhaps not. School leavers probably aren’t going to vote for the Tories anyway, and older voters might be sufficiently worried about the country to go for it.

On the other hand the Conservatives are so on the nose that it might be looked on cynically and make no difference.

State Government spends $2m on security, maintenance for abandoned Swan Districts HospitalDylan CapornThe West Australian
Sun, 26 May 2024 2:00AM

Taxpayers have spent millions of dollars maintaining and providing security for an abandoned Perth hospital, almost a decade after it closed.
Amid negotiations for a transfer of the Swan Districts Hospital — as part of the South West Native Title settlement — the nine-hectare site in Middle Swan sits empty, with buildings left dilapidated by break-ins, graffiti and water damage.
In a Yes, Minister-esque development, The Sunday Times can reveal the State Government has spent $2 million since the hospital was shuttered in 2015, covering costs associated with managing overgrown vegetation, installing perimeter fencing and providing a constant security presence.
During a visit to the site recently, a security guard was quick to keep watch from his car as a photographer snapped images.

An Austrian school take on Milton Friedman via a book review of ‘The Last Conservative’:

Milton Friedman: The Last Conservative

By Jennifer Burns

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2023; x + 587 pp.

Imagine that you come across this about the “education premium” on someone’s blog: “By going to college, you are more than tripling your chances for success in after life.” The statement is buttressed by a calculation of the extra lifetime earnings that a college degree will provide. Wouldn’t you think that the author is an economist? In fact, the author was a high school student, and he wrote this in 1927, before ever studying economics. As you will by now have guessed, the precocious student was Milton Friedman.

Jennifer Burns, a professor of history at Stanford, makes clear in her outstanding biography that many of Friedman’s characteristic intellectual traits were present at a very early age, as the anecdote above illustrates, and that these remained constant throughout his long life. Much of Friedman’s work in economics consists of statistical analysis, though of course carried out at a far more sophisticated level than his fledgling high school effort. As an undergraduate at Rutgers, he was trained in statistical analysis by Arthur Burns, a young professor whom Friedman idolized. Burns introduced Friedman to the method of business cycle research of his own teacher, Wesley Clair Mitchell, and also stressed the importance of Alfred Marshall’s Principles of Economics, a text that was to remain a touchstone of sound economics for Friedman. Years later, Friedman made original contributions to statistical theory. He helped develop “sequential analysis” and together with L.J. Savage worked on the analysis of utility and risk. “Although never lionized as part of Friedman’s Chicago gang, Savage was one of the few people whom Friedman openly called ‘a genius’ and their short-lived collaboration proved fertile for both.”

Friedman’s commitment to statistical analysis led him vehemently to oppose the economics of Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek, whom he regarded as the purveyors of a priori, “unscientific” theorizing. Although Friedman and Hayek were friends and colleagues at the University of Chicago, and Friedman admired Hayek as a political and social thinker, “when a motion was raised to grant Hayek a courtesy appointment in economics—generally an honorific with no real power—he was not a supporter.” Hayek’s Austrian economics was not empirical enough for Friedman.

Of course, Friedman’s views on economics were not confined to methodology. From his graduate years at Chicago, he had firm ideas about policy as well, and these he absorbed from Frank Knight and Henry Simons. Both supported a competitive market, but they sharply differentiated between the “real” economy and the monetary and banking system. In the former, competition, firmly regulated by antitrust enforcement, was the order of the day, but not so in banking, which required centralized control by the government. To deal with depression, monetary expansion was required. This position too is at odds with the Austrian School, which views with alarm the machinations of the Fed.

Burns explains the views of the Chicago School on banking in this way:

“Galvanized by [FDR’s 1933] bank holiday, Chicago’s economists swung into action, drawing up the ‘Chicago plan’ for banking reform. . . . It shows clearly that Chicago economists, despite their neo-classical orientation, carved out a large role for the federal government in meeting the emergency. Chicago’s leading price theorists did not argue that the Depression was a necessary correction, or that economic activity would magically return to a desirable equilibrium. . . . Within ten days after the bank holiday began, the memo urged a significant expansion of federal power to meet the crisis. Broadly, it said that the federal government should attempt to increase the price level by around 15 percent. Specifically, it should take over the banking system, pass legislation breaking up the savings and lending functions of banks, and end the gold standard.”

Friedman absorbed the lessons of the Chicago economists, and emphasis on the need for monetary expansion to deal with depressions was a leitmotif of his career. Most notably, in A Monetary History of the United States, coauthored with Anna Schwartz, he blamed the severity of the Great Depression on the Fed’s contraction of the money supply:

“How did money affect business cycles? Friedman and Schwartz had an answer they considered definitive: money mattered. . . Friedman knew the book would have an impact. He knew it was the best work he had ever done, or would ever do. . .

“The book’s centerpiece was its stunning analysis of the Great Depression. Friedman and Schwartz’s data showed a precipitous 33 percent decline in the quantity of money during what they called ‘the great contraction.’ They convincingly argued that this lack of money transformed an unremarkable dip in the business cycle into a crisis of global proportions. . . . A Monetary History of the United States dwelled with the intensity of a psychologist upon the differences between the New York bankers George I. Harrison and Benjamin Strong Jr., men holding the power to redirect history itself. The absent hero was Strong, who died just before the crash. Examining Strong’s earlier career, Friedman and Schwartz argued that he would have reacted to the liquidity crisis with ‘strenuous and appropriate measures to head it off’ . . Harrison acquiesced to a policy of monetary inactivity. The Fed stood by as money drained from the banking system and the economy collapsed.”

Strong was Friedman’s hero, but he was Murray Rothbard’s villain. Rothbard blamed Strong for the inflationary expansion of bank credit during the 1920s, which led to an artificial boom that, as the Austrian theory of the business cycle shows, must inevitably collapse. Rothbard developed his analysis in his magisterial America’s Great Depression (1963), but Friedman did not respond to it.

Why did these two major economists differ on the causes of the Great Depression, though both agreed, albeit in contrasting ways, that money matters? The answer is that methodology also matters, and this is the chief point I’d like to emphasize in this review. Methodology may strike some, eager to get down to practical issues, as arid and abstract, but it has consequences of the utmost importance.

The Austrian theory of the business cycle is based on a priori reasoning, which is then used to help interpret historical events. People often find the notion of a priori truth puzzling, but what is important for our purposes is not an account of why such reasoning is true, but rather the fact that if you start with an a priori true axiom and reason validly from it, your conclusion also is true. Friedman’s method is entirely different. His account of the business cycle is based entirely on statistical evidence, correlating changes in the quantity of money with employment and output. What this ignores is that statistical correlations do not by themselves suffice to establish causation. Friedman viewed theory in instrumentalist terms, seeing it as a way to generate predictions that could be experimentally tested. The intrinsic significance of the theory was of little or no concern to him, and even a theory with false assumptions could still be useful. “Friedman considered the realism of a theory’s assumptions beside the point. . . Analytically, it wasn’t important if a business owner actually tried to maximize profits. It was only important that collectively, businesses could be understood ‘as if’ they were trying to do so. . . Friedman was also comfortable with the idea that observation could never be truly neutral; the investigator had always a selection bias of some sort. The way out of the trap was a relentless focus on problem-solving. After observation came prediction.” It isn’t clear why Friedman imagined that bias would not also affect how predictions were interpreted. False assumptions combined with selection bias does not seem like a recipe for success.

A lot of TDS in the general population results from the drip, drip, drip of headlines generated by certain favoured “news” services that pop up on the start screen of microdaft. If the lumpenproletariat read mainly the headlines and don’t get other sources, it will colour their view of Trump. I’ve come across a lot of people here in Oz who aren’t really political tragics like most here, but who have absorbed the anti-Trump vibe anyway.

I suppose it had to happen. Invited for pleasant visit & later dinner at daughter’s house. All went very well until I foolishly asked granddaughter whether her lectures at university had been disrupted by demonstrators for the Pallie cause.

Well – she launched into a passionate defence of the demos. I immediately put both palms up and said “Stop!” indicating that I had contrary views and this should be explored at another time. Well…guess what…that caused an even more passionate tirade. The steamroller had gathered steam and could not be stopped. So I figured that I might as well try to wrest control of the mad machine.

Counter arguments (have you actually seen the photos and videos of the 7 October atrocities?) did not even penetrate the stream of consciousness that ensued. But I persisted – particularly as I was accused (in so many words) of being an unfeeling moron.

One of the more annoying accusations was that I (& others like me) was totally ignorant of the equally pernicious (so she reckons) abduction & rape of the Christian Nigerian girls by Islamic guerillas. It didn’t help that Mr. Corporate (my son-in-law) agreed with her. Of course, I said, I am aware of these atrocities. “What are YOU doing about it ??” was her absurd accusation.

You get the picture. The outraged but ignorant adolescent. But the situation for Israel and Jews throughout the world is far too significant to protect adolescent pride, so fellow Cats, I launched into a fairly heavy response with resultant tears from the granddaughter (& bewilderment from the boyfriend) and a tearful departure to her room.

Visits to my daughter’s house are fast becoming too treacherous.Thankfully, daughter and son-in-law understood our position. But daughter did offer the comment as we left….”She is SO like you!”

I assume that was a compliment.

UK Jewish communal organisations have long been even more cowardly, supine and craven than the mainstream Australian Jewish communal organisations, and that’s saying something. The brief of communal organisations, be they here in Oz, the UK or the USA, should always be to advocate for Jewish community issues, on such things as education, security, kashrut and so on, and to advocate for Israel and Zionism. Instead, over the last two decades and particularly over the last decade, too many of these mainstream organisations have preferred to engage in wank wokery, multicultural, ecumenical bullshit appeasement, spruiking for SSM, trans rubbish and da Voice rather than spruiking for issues that pertain specifically to the Jewish community. This is why the AJA was set up in 2017, as a reaction to the mainstream Jewish communal organisations support for SSM and their increasing leftism. The AJA is a conservative Jewish voice. Last year many of the mainstream Australian Jewish organisations supported the Voice. The AJA did not. And since October 7, not one mainstream Muslim organisation here in this country has bothered to condemn the rapes, murders and kidnappings of Jews on October 7 2023.

But as bad as things are here in Oz it’s worse in the UK and US where this appeasement rabbit hole has been even more blatant and nauseating, the cowardice and outright appeasement has long been a feature, alienating ordinary Jewish men and women. But most ordinary people don’t make an issue of it, they’re too busy getting on with their lives, going to work raising families, trying to earn a quid or two. They don’t speak up and they don’t do anything. But the atrocities of October 7 and the responses in the West, with weekly genocidal Jew hate marches now a common feature on our streets, the unholy alliance between the radical left, the not so radical left and Muslims has pulled down the veil and shown ordinary people just how degraded and compromised many of our mainstream Jewish organisations are. An example of this is how the mainstream UK Jewish organisations have treated someone like the lad from Luton, a long friend to Jews and Israel. Many ordinary UK Jews happen to like the lad from Luton, many ordinary UK Jews have to support the lad from Luton, but the mainstream communal organisations have long bought into the nonsense that the lad from Luton is a pernicious smelly racist Islamophobe.

The reason why I write this is that there is an awakening, particularly in the UK, amongst ordinary Jews. These people, in London and other cities with significant Jewish populations, are now fighting back, after seven months of Met police appeasement, of government inaction, of mainstream media pro-Islamist corruption, and so ordinary Jews in London and elsewhere are joining forces with Christians and ordinary working class lads, like the lad from Luton, to face off and fight off the leftist and Muslim Jew hating scum. This is from London overnight……

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gJn7ig8fK4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtwPCQzOKa4

Ordinary Jews in London, Birmingham and Manchester are hitting the streets….saying enough, and they are taking the fight to the leftist and Muslim scum. It’s sweet, very sweet. More please.

Most of us will recall that time – although the young Pallie sympathisers probably have no idea. I recall that many Israeli farmers were removed from their farms and businesses to make way for Palestinians.

It represented a reasonable opportunity for the Pallies to make something of a strip of land that had excellent coastal opportunities for trade etc etc. as well as the sort of enterprises that Israelis had been operating.

In spite of millions of dollars of support from Islamic states such as Qatar, the settlers made almost nothing of the opportunities offered.

As your experience with your granddaughter proves, you see what you want to see.

That attitude comes from somewhere, maybe closer to her home than you think.

Education facilities have a great deal to do with shaping minds also of course.

I tell my kids when I’m presented with emotive subjects that I don’t care if they don’t affect me and what I do care about is people’s inability to to rationally look at facts and not cling to tenuous argument. I can do something about things I have some control over but will not burden myself over things that I can’t. Slowly they are coming round. As smart as they are and are very practical, the hangover of constant drival spouted on social media still weighs heavy. Watching the Mariners v Victory game last night and Mariners doing what they’ve dun for most of the season .. WIN .. They are a very slow starting mob and if you don’t bury ’em in the 1st half you are in trouble and last night they did it again .. Victory dominated the 1st half without scoring, controlled most of the 2nd half but only one goal to show for it ..
Then Mariners equalized just before the final whistle and took over in extra time for, what ended up, a convincing win …
And a season never to be repeated .. Premiers. A League winnas & Asian Cup winnas (can’t be repeated cos that wuz the last ever Asian Cup with all Asia wide competitions to be re-worked/re-vamped for next season) ..
Wonder what Fitba Oz will have to say, if anything, about “security” deciding discretion was more appropriate than valour when the crowd “invaded” the pitch after the final whistle .. ha ha ..!

The less said about the Eels the better .. duuuuuuuuuuuuuh!

The movie may be ok but woke has a distinctive pungent odour that deters people from going anywhere near it. They have been burned so often that one whiff is enough.

Nolte: ‘Mad Max with a Girl’ Faces Worst Memorial Day Weekend Debut in 41 Years (25 May)

They called it Mad Max, put a girl in it, and now Woke Hollywood’s staring down the throat of the worst Memorial Day weekend opener in 41 years—since Return of the Jedi in 1983. Before we get to the Sycophant Media’s lamer-than-lame excuse for this failure, we’ll start with the boilerplate…

“Ouch, it’s looking really bad,” reports the far-left Deadline. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga could post the “lowest opening for a Memorial Day movie in 41 years with a 4-day between $31M-$35M. How the holy heck is that?”

If Mad Max with a Girl “comes in on the low end,” Deadline adds, “the last time a No. 1 movie or Memorial Day opening title filed a 4-day gross take that was lower was back in 1983 when Return of the Jedi made $30.5M.”

Mad Max with a Girl?  Heh. But we saw how well Maverick went. If you make a fun politics-free movie the punters will come in.

When I was in Zimbabwe I visited the Air Force Museum at Gweru. Some very interesting planes, including a Canberra bomber.
I was later told of a man who owned and restored a Spitfire to flyable condition. The new Zimbabwe Government ordered him to hand it over to them.
He did not comply; he flew it, and himself, into a hillside rather than hand it over.
Google found this on Wikipedia:
Jack Malloch Wow, this man was the sort of chappie WIlbur Smith novels were based on.

In 1978, Malloch persuaded a Rhodesian Air Force base to part with the Mk 22 Spitfire which had been sitting on a plinth outside the air base for over 20 years. He began renovating it the same year, which process included having a five-bladed variable-pitch propeller custom-built by a German firm. In March 1980, he made the first flight in the newly renovated aircraft and it was featured at air shows in Zimbabwe at the time. Malloch was killed in his Mk 22 on the last day of filming the documentary Pursuit of a Dream on 26 March 1982 when he flew the aircraft into a thunderstorm.

Following on from dickless’s salivations about rubber chickens:

Donald Trump supporters overwhelmed the Washington Hilton Saturday for the Libertarian National Convention in Washington, D.C.

Not all party faithful in attendance were pleased with the convention’s offer to Trump to speak, which energized the small party’s usually relatively sleepy convention but left party members greatly outnumbered by supporters of the president.

Some attendees distributed pink kazoos to party members with instructions to interrupt Trump’s speech during statements the aspiring musicians disagreed with.

Latham was asked about Greenwich’s defamation suit against him which wrapped up on Friday. Latham said something really astonishing: Greenwich was funded by Climate 200, Simon Holmes à Court’s mob which put the Teal bunch of hags into parliament. Latham is a climate realist and pro coal and nuclear so it is not surprising. As well as Court here are some of the other woke rich fuktards who support Climate 200:

I love the phrase “average serving”.

NY Times touts ‘Urine’ carrots (25 May)

NYT: P-BANK is a demonstration public toilet inviting people to donate their urine for the recovery of phosphorous for reuse as garden fertilizer. According to P-BANK’s instigators, Bauhaus University Weimar in Germany, an average serving of urine (300 milliliters, or about 10 fluid ounces) contains about 200 milligrams of phosphorous, which is enough to grow three or four carrots. — at least theoretically. As of now, only Switzerland has approved the use of Aurin, a liquid fertilizer made from human urine.

The Swiss and the Germans do seem to go for kinky stuff, so maybe urine carrots will be a big hit in those countries.

When I first saw this picture, the blood drained out of my face. To an American economist, it was just that shocking.

For those who tire of my home nation’s bullying and hegemony–always telling the world what to think and do–this is the moment that all that began to change.

Whether it was ever wise of America to put itself in this situation–or smart of most of our globe to accept it–is the subject of another day or perhaps a book.

Florida to repeal clean energy goals, citing new law deleting climate change mentions (25 May)

Citing that new law, the Office of Energy’s proposal states that the renewable energy goals are “no longer necessary.”

The law also prohibited offshore wind turbines in state waters, curtailed some regulations on natural gas pipelines and reduced local government control over the location of natural gas storage facilities, among other changes.

“We’re restoring sanity in our approach to energy and rejecting the agenda of the radical green zealots,” DeSantis said in a post on the social media site X, formerly Twitter, when he signed the bill.

Arky on communism. Part 1.
In 1848 Marx and Engels published The Communist Manifesto.
You can read it here: https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/61/pg61-images.html
Of course, you may not want to, so here is a summary:
Communists believe history is a struggle between classes. Some classes that they assume will oppose their grab for power will need to be eliminated.
They want land, factories, banking, communication, transport and education all in the hands of the state; abolition of inheritance and private ownership; and everyone to work at the pleasure of the state (Compulsory work).
..
France.
In 1871 communists seized power in Paris. Between 8000 to 20,000 died in the ensuing two month struggle between the Republican army and the communists.
..
Russia.
By June 1923 the Bolsheviks had won the Russian civil war with between 7 to 12 million casualties and two million refugees.
Between 1931 and 1934 Soviet policies resulted in a widespread, planned and targeted famine with deaths of at least 5 million across the country, around four million in the Ukraine.
It is estimated that under Stalin 20 million died in labor camps, forced collectivization, famine and executions.
..
China.
By the end of 1949 the communists had won the Chinese civil war, the Nationalists retreating to Taiwan. The death toll was around 5 million combatants and civilians.
It is of course impossible to give precise numbers for all those killed by the Chinese Communists as they consolidated their power and then undertook their program to transform society and eliminate class enemies. Estimates range from 30 to 70 million victims of the consolidation of power period, collectivisation, the Great Leap Forward, Famines and the Cultural revolution.
..
Korea.
After the Second World War, in Korea,  the Soviets supported the communist government of Kim il Sung. In 1950 the communist North invaded the South, starting the Korean War. Which resulted in around 3 million civilian deaths and 2.5 million military casualties. During this war the communists claimed that they had captured 70,000 Republican soldiers but after hostilities returned only 8,000 of them.
Estimates of the death toll by the Kim government due in labour camps, purges and land reforms range from 1.5 to 3 million.
..
Vietnam.
Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh formed government in Hanoi. By 1946 the communists had suppressed all opposing parties. In December 1946 Ho declared war on the French, starting the first Indochina war. The French lost 74,000 dead and the Vietnamese up to 300,000 with 400,000 civilian dead.
After the first Indochina war, Ho began the usual communist reforms, repressions and programs, resulting in the usual deaths.
..
Laos.
The communists invaded Laos in 1958, beginning the Laotian civil war, with estimates of up to 60,000 dead. After the war ended in 1975, the communists planned the elimination of the Hmong. Efforts were made to evacuate these US allies to Thailand and the United States. 53,000 Hmong would eventually be settled in the USA. How many died attempting to flee is unknown.
..
Cambodia.
In 1970, the Vietnamese communists controlled much of Cambodia and backed the Khmer Rouge.  In 1975 the Khmer Rouge had defeated the Republicans and formed Democratic Kampuchea. 310,000 died in the civil war. The Cambodian communists, inspired by a particularly nasty version of Maoism, murdered 2 million of their fellow citizens.
..
Poland.
Poland, 1944. Soviets establish the Lublin committee as the national government. Anti communists were murdered. 30,000 died in the anti communist uprising.  From 1945 to 1948 the Soviets deported millions of Poles into forced labour.
..
The Baltics.
In 1940 the Soviet Union annexed the Baltic states of Latvia, Estonian and Lithuania. Former military, political and business elites were arrested and murdered. After the Soviets reoccupied the Baltic states in 1944, they deported around 15% of the population to forced labour camps.
..
Portuguese Africa.
Mozambique and Angola. In 1964 China and the Soviet Union backed communists insurgents against Portuguese rule. Bordering Rhodesia and South Africa, Mozambique was an important stepping stone to destabilise those Western democracies. 110,000 civilian dead resulted from the wars of against Portuguese administration in Mozambique and Angola.
Of course, victory was followed by the usual communist playbook:

“By the 1980s the FRELIMO regime faced increasing economic and political trouble. The relocation of several million people into collective farms and other communist experiments contributed to food shortages that caused 300-600,000 Mozambicans to starve to death”.
End of Part 1.

Mistakes and lessons from the voice referendumThe result on the voice was a disaster for the country and a tragedy for First Australians. It’s time to confront what went wrong, before we all start forgetting what really went on.
By frank brennan
From Inquirer
May 25, 2024
13 minute read
115
The result of the 2023 referendum on the voice was a disaster for the country and a tragedy for First Australians. A week after the 40:60 loss, the key Indigenous leaders who had dealt with the Albanese government during the campaign broke their silence and issued a powerful statement saying:
“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are in shock and are grieving the result. We feel acutely the repudiation of our peoples and the rejection of our efforts to pursue reconciliation in good faith. That people who came to our country in only the last 235 years would reject the recognition of this continent’s First Peoples – on our sacred land which we have cared for and nurtured for more than 65,000 years – is so appalling and mean-spirited as to be utterly unbelievable a week following. It will remain unbelievable and appalling for decades to come.”
There has been little appetite for public discussion about lessons to be learnt from this abject failure. Some of the key proponents saw nothing wrong with the process and the wording of the proposed change. They think racism played a key part in the result. For example, the key Indigenous leaders claimed, “It is clear no reform of the Constitution that includes our peoples will ever succeed. This is the bitter lesson from 14 October.” If they’re right, there will be no point in attempting again constitutional recognition of First Australians.
But they may be wrong – and I hope they are. There may be a prospect of future constitutional change but not with the process that was adopted and not with the wording that was proposed in 2023. It’s time to begin the conversation about past mistakes, before we all start forgetting what went on.
Since the disastrous referendum result, Labor stalwarts with a strong commitment to Indigenous rights like Paul Keating and Peter Garrett have publicly lamented the basic errors made during the 2023 campaign. Several Aboriginal leaders who were members of the government’s Referendum Advisory Group have admitted there was a need for a more inclusive process and more precise wording of the proposed change to the Constitution.

‘Let’s all have the humility to admit our mistakes, regroup, forgive the hurts, and move on, seeking the due constitutional recognition of First Australians.’

Celebrating his 80th birthday, Keating gave a broad-ranging interview in The Australian Financial Review published on February 21, 2024, declaring that the voice referendum was “a mistake from the start”. He disclosed that he had told Marcia Langton and Megan Davis back in 2016 that he opposed the constitutional route. He said, “A lot of clever Aboriginal people have wasted a lot of years on this issue.”
Responding to the interview, Langton said: “Paul Keating was right. We should have proceeded to legislate the voice concept of regional Indigenous representation and joint decision-making before a referendum.” Mick Gooda repeated his criticism of the “crash or crash through” approach adopted by Anthony Albanese and key Indigenous advisers like Noel Pearson who, during the campaign, had attacked Gooda as a “bedwetter” for wanting to investigate alternative wording of the referendum proposal.
Shortly thereafter, Garrett’s observations were published in The Weekend Australian. He thought it was “a very disappointing result, particularly for Aboriginal people who had championed the voice – but not entirely unexpected, given the fact that it was opposed very early on by the alternative prime minister”. Garrett observed: “(Peter) Dutton’s act was highly regrettable. Mr Albanese probably in hindsight should have said, ‘If we don’t have the support of the Opposition Leader, it’s pretty clear that it can’t succeed.’ He didn’t want to disappoint many people who felt that it should have been put anyway, including the Indigenous leadership. That was probably a mistake in hindsight.”
When putting my own suggested wording for the constitutional change in February 2023, I was not claiming the legal acumen to decide single-handedly the ideal wording of the Constitution. I was putting forward a suggestion I thought was consistent with the architecture of the Constitution, with what had been proposed by the Referendum Council in 2017 and with the limits on the voice that its proponents were claiming could be imposed by the parliament.

My suggestion was a new section 127 of the Constitution: “There shall be an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice with such structure and functions as the Parliament deems necessary to facilitate consultation prior to the making of special laws with respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and with such other functions as the Parliament determines.” By putting this suggestion, I was hoping to pressure the Albanese government to widen its circle of consultation, providing at the very least a transparent parliamentary committee process open to recommending changes to the wording.
I was also hoping to pressure members of the Liberal Party to come on board with a tighter provision that would be seen to be more consistent with the Liberal Party’s philosophical approach and objections, in so far as such objections were philosophical and not simply the result of a deliberately negative spoiling strategic approach to being in opposition.

Turbines on 250 metre hills nearby are stopped dead.
As they rightly say, it’s not the maximum output for renewables that matters but the minimum.

There are 3 measures for output of energy sources:

Installed capacity (IC): if the installation is producing at its maximum installed capacity

Capacity factor (CF): the amount of electricity produced averaged over a year as a proportion of IC

Reliability Point (RP): the % rate the IC occurs expressed as a % of the CF.

The CF of wind and solar is 30%. The RP of wind and solar is 6%.

Then there is the intermittency. Wind and solar has a CF of 30% but that is averaged over a year. It cannot be predicted when wind and solar will produce; they may go days without producing any at all.

One interesting propaganda tactic used by communists is to simultaneously push two completely opposing narratives.
For example, Biden might say: “Come on man, the Chinese are no competition for us”.
Meanwhile, other actors for the communist bloc will be playing up Chinese military power and giving the message “You really don’t want to screw with China given how advanced they are now”.
One might think why would they do that? Surely they have one, central, planned narrative they want to push? Is it a mistake?
It’s no mistake.
Propagandists, and particularly communist propagandists are not confined by truth. Their only interest is the effect of the propaganda.
The idea that China can’t compete with the West is useful because some will believe it and discount China as a threat.
The narrative that the West has already lost to China is useful because some will believe it and feel despair and helplessness.
Therefore, both lines are useful, and both are propagated.
How often are the opposing views we read useful to communists, and thus the communists are behind the parties involved in both cases?
A communist state is likely financing, via various fronts, the things you read on both sides of any issue.

Premier Roger Cook opens door to further gun crackdown following ‘chilling’ Floreat double murder
Josh ZimmermanThe West Australian
Sun, 26 May 2024 10:52AM

Premier Roger Cook has opened the door to further tightening WA’s gun laws – already touted as the toughest in the country – following the “senseless, chilling, and absolutely horrific” murder of a Floreat mother and daughter.
Jennifer and Gretl Petelczyc were shot in their own home by Mark Bombara after he turned up at the Berkley Crescent residence on Friday afternoon looking for his former partner.
It is understood Bombara’s ex-wife was good friends with Jennifer and had been staying with the Petelczyc family since leaving her husband a few weeks ago.
Speaking with 6PR radio, Mr Cook said the murders – which culminated in Bombara shooting himself – had left him in “shock and disbelief”.

“This is a circumstance in which a woman has sought refuge from a friend and it would appear that as a result of that, that friend and her daughter have come to harm,” Mr Cook said.
“We need to let the police establish the facts surrounding this incident but… by every measure it looks senseless, chilling, and absolutely horrific.”

In February, the Cook Government announced sweeping new firearms laws that seek to cap the number of guns an individual can own and force anyone applying for a licence to undergo a mental health assessment.
That legislation is currently before Parliament but Mr Cook said he was open to tightening them even further.
“We need to obviously reflect on this incident and we will do whatever the police ask us,” the Premier said.
“If the police say certain laws will make us safer, well then we will obviously consider that very seriously.
“The (proposed firearm laws) been opposed in their current form by the Opposition.
“But we’ll continue to see what we can do either to expedite these laws, so that we can get them in place as quickly as possible, or indeed, consider further changes that might be necessary to keep the community safe.”
One proposal raised with Mr Cook was making family court proceedings an “automatic red flag” for police to remove any guns in the possession of a known licence holder.

It was during the period of the Telstra sales and some fairly important issues were being discussed.

In the morning session, he was merely sluggish (I diagnosed a serious hangover), but in the afternoon, following what must have been a well refreshed lunch, he kept falling asleep and had to be jogged awake by the Committee Clerk.

‘What if we’ve been drinking?’: New campaign aims to improve what you know about consentBy Natassia ChrysanthosMay 26, 2024 — 3.00am

Listen to this article

Australians will be asked to check their knowledge of sexual consent in a government campaign rolling out across television, social media and public billboards, based on fresh data that shows half the population is confused about consent and think it has become a minefield for men to navigate.
The $40 million campaign will direct Australians to a new website with question-and-answer cards that debunk common myths, and conversation guides to help adults talk to each other as well as their children about the issue.
New video ads will feature footage of couples with a voice-over that poses questions such as “How do I know if there’s consent? What if we’ve been drinking, and we go back to their place?” before directing people to the online resources.

Further to Frank Brennan, I don’t agree with a lot of his opinions. Frank Brennan has always been of the left (like much of his family), but I will say this about him, he was ALWAYS a stalwart defender of Cardinal George Pell, he always knew that the allegations against Pell were a crock of shit and he was never scared to say so and to speak up for Pell. And despite supporting the Voice, Brennan knew it was going to go down the gurgler because the Slug of Grayndler, aka Albo the Trot, insisted on making it a purely partisan issue in a vain attempt to make him look good.

The best explanation for Sunak calling the election this soon with these numbers is the uniparty staving off any chance of the minor parties establishing a meaningful result.

Or perhaps, if the US forces a shooting war between NATO and Russia this northern summer, he doesn’t want to be the PM of the day?

The tip to me was Sunak talking about conscription, that’s a nod to the USA that Britain will step up, in principle, and supply an army .. pfft, of what value are conscripts from the UK you might ask.

A war in Europe would also allow the US to suspend the election you might suggest.

So many advantages to a good war.

This is way more complex than people realise and it means not having to deal with Trump or an election.

Reading “Spitfire” by John Nichol

“After D-day, hardened troops were distinctly unimpressed by the French lagers on offer, so the Spitfire came to the rescue. A Mark 1X, fitted with pylons under the wings to carry bombs or fuel tanks was modified to carry beer kegs. If the Spitfire flew high enough, the cold air ensured the beer was ready for consumption as soon as it landed. (Page 328.)”

The myth of Rommel was propagated by the Brits especially to cover up their own ineptness in North Africa.

Talk about a tough crowd!

Farage spent 20 years fighting for Brexit, long before it became fashionable, at considerable personal and financial cost.

Now people are beating him up because he is not following their desired political path, presumably at further personal, financial and political cost.

He is not a grifter. His history with Brexit makes that clear.

Reading Colm Toibin’s Bad Blood as a bit of Ireland prep.
I have forebears from Cavan and Leitrim so I’m hoping to get to those border bits.
Toibin is now chatting to Alan Brooke, the grandson of a former Prime Minister of Northern Ireland whose family at one time owned twenty nine thousand acres but in the mid 80s reduced to 40. As a contrast the average Catholic farm in Leitrim had been 30 acres of poor land. Leitrim’s population in the 1980s still decimated by emigration and famine and continued emigration.
People not bothering to try to sell houses just walking away.
I know the town my great grandmother came from no longer exists.
It does sound rather like it does nothing but rain in Ireland, Toibin’s walking in July and getting drenched every other day. I’m going to buy a poncho that can cover my back pack.

They said it was needed but not exactly effective, more of a peace of mind thing coupled with the fact that there wasn’t a lot to loot anyway.

Floreat shooting: Mark Bombara’s 13 guns seized after horrific murder-suicide occurred
Josh Zimmerman & Shannon HamptonThe West Australian
Sun, 26 May 2024 6:00PM

The first sign something was amiss at the two-storey riverside mansion owned by Mark James Bombara was the pile of clothes strewn across the verge.
The second were the police officers in the driveway, watching on as Bombara’s partner removed her belongings from the Mosman Park home.
It was Easter Monday. April 1. Seven weeks later, Bombara would remove a pistol from the same house — one of 13 guns he legally owned — and use it to murder two of the innocent people helping his ex-wife escape his violent clutches.

I’ll defend the right to own guns, but THIRTEEN F.F.S?

This is Kalinga where we’re visiting, a quiet well-off suburb of Brisbane and we’ve just heard someone, a deep male voice, running down the street outside yelling in utter anguish ‘help me, aargh, help me’. We all raced outside, as did others in the street, but can’t seem to locate what is going on.

ABC’s Laura Tingle launches attack on Australia: ‘We are a racist country’
By sophie elsworth

The ABC’s chief political correspondent and staff-elected board member, Laura Tingle, has launched an extraordinary attack on Australia, declaring it is a “racist country”.
One of the public broadcaster’s most senior reporters made the controversial remarks at the Sydney Writers Festival on Sunday during a panel discussion moderated by Barrie Cassidy, a former ABC Insiders host and Labor staffer to Bob Hawke.
During the discussion, Tingle voiced her repeated criticism of Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and bizarrely accused him of encouraging abuse towards migrants looking to buy or rent property in Australia. “We are a racist country, let’s face it. We always have been and it’s very depressing,” Tingle told the audience at Sydney’s Carriageworks.
Tingle criticised Mr Dutton, telling attendees she didn’t recall a leader of a major political party “to be saying … everything that is going wrong in this country is because of migrants”.
Tingle said that after listening to Mr Dutton’s budget reply speech earlier this month, where he discussed migration and housing issues, she “had this sudden flash of people turning up to try and rent a property or at an auction and they look a bit different – whatever you define different as – (and) that basically he (Dutton) has given them licence to be abused, and in any circumstance where people feel like they’re missing out”.
The writers festival event, titled Barrie Cassidy and Friends: State of the Nation, included a panel comprising Tingle, former Liberal staffer and Sydney Morning Herald columnist Niki Savva, Guardian Australia political reporter Amy Remeikis and ABC Indigenous affairs reporter Bridget Brennan.

If Laura Tingle thinks Australia is a racist country, I can only envy her, her ignorance. She really should travel more.

Well, daughter’s six-footer army reserve husband was one of two heroes of the hour. He and another army-type neighbour raced up to where a garage had lights on which the injured man had run into (the big houses here have locked gates), and where two men with balaclavas had picked up a hammer and were beating up the runner some more till he was quite bloodied. These heroes both did massive roars at the balaclava guys to stop immediately, prepared to physically nobble them, while the teenagers left dwelling at this home alone peering anxiously from the upstairs balcony (mum’s on a cruise in Alaska) called the cops, as by this time had half the street, neighbours everywhere standing outside on balconies holding baseball bats and other implements of protection and attack. My daughter standing in the shadows then saw the two balaclava guys run back by her down the street as, scared, she called police again, just before they arrived. The man being attacked was of African-American appearance, and not known in the neighbourhood. The balaclava men were said to seem to be Middle-Eastern as far as could be ascertained. Numerous police cars now circle the neighbourhood looking for the balaclava guys. It is thought all three may have been part of a gang casing the houses for robbery.

Paris end of Mogadish indeed. And you’re thinking of buying property around here? jokes my son-in-law as he returns unscathed.

The Aust is reporting that some Ozzie dude has bought an Island in Palm beach for A$227 million.

The dude appears to have a good sense of humor too.

Australian bazillionaire Michael Dorrell has confirmed himself as the mystery buyer of a $US150m ($227m) private island in Palm Beach, Florida, in a set of cheeky remarks provided exclusively to Margin Call that take a friendly swipe at Atlassian billionaires Scott Farquhar and Mike Cannon-Brookes.

Dorrell, formerly of Macquarie Bank and later headhunted by Blackstone, is a co-founder of US-based investment group Stonepeak Partners, which launched out of Manhattan in 2011 and made an absolute killing in infrastructure investments ($60bn reportedly under management).

Looks like he accepted the keys to his pile just a few days ago; it’s a 0.8ha estate on Tarpon Island accessible by boat, or by car using a very slim connecting bridge to the outer shaft of old Florida.

“It was a national embarrassment that our most expensive real estate until now belongs to those two computer nerds who bought matching homes next door to each other. Someone had to do something about it,” Dorrell said. Farquhar and Cannon-Brookes bought neighbouring homes in the Sydney suburb of Point Piper in 2017 and 2018, respectively, the latter purchase for close to $100m setting an Australian record at the time.

Much as he tried to keep his name out of the press using NDAs and a shell company, Dorrell’s identity as the purchaser was dutifully gossiped out and first reported by The Wall Street Journal on Friday citing sources “familiar with the situation”.

“We are a racist country, let’s face it. We always have been and it’s very depressing,” Tingle told the audience at Sydney’s Carriageworks.

Although this was specifically about immigration, they are still seething over da Voice referendum result.

Outstanding. Just outstanding commentary on the current semitic sentiment in this country.

The back end of a Gray Connolly piece in the Tele:

With too few exceptions, the leaders of our major universities are missing in action, or quibbling, or equivocating – trembling vice-chancellors hiding under desks, “waiting on advice”.

Worse, our police, whose sworn duty is to enforce the law without fear or favour, are now terrified of “escalating” situations where Jews are already being menaced or their schools and synagogues terrorised.

If you are from Sydney, you know the police never cowered, especially when ranks were filled by war veterans and rugby league players.

It is unimaginable that an earlier generation of NSW police would ever have allowed anti-Semitic mobs to gather at the Sydney Opera House on October 9 last year – all before a single Israeli soldier had entered Gaza – to incite hate at “the Jews”.

Yet, even as we may wish to assign blame elsewhere, it is we as citizens who are ultimately to blame. It is we who decide, each day, by our acts and omissions, what sort of country we want to live in.

It is we who demand too little leadership from our alleged “leaders”.

For too long, too many of us have accepted mediocrity, indolence and sclerosis – and now rank and abject cowardice – from Canberra, from Macquarie St, from university chancelleries, and, worst of all, from chiefs of law enforcement.

The result of our society shamefully accepting such lamentable circumstances is the cancerous anti-Semitism we now see. Rather than watch our world disappear, we all can help it – and we each must help it.

Never Again means Never Again. We owe our Jewish sisters and brothers a solidarity of nothing less.

BBC weather forecaster and her family were kicked off a plane by the ‘angry little’ captain after asking passengers not to eat peanuts because of her daughter’s allergy.
A weather forecaster!
Georgie Palmer, 49, her husband Nick Sollom, 48, and daughters Rosie, 12, and Annie, 14, were ordered off the SunExpress flight from London Gatwick to Dalaman, Turkey on Tuesday after telling the crew Rosie had an anaphylactic allergy to peanuts.
It came after Ms Palmer said staff refused to make a standard announcement requesting passengers not eat peanuts because they had ‘updated’ their allergies policy.
Instead she politely asked passengers around her not to consume any peanuts and pass the message on, which they did happily.
Sure they did. Thinks: “entitled parent virtue-signalling demands world change to suit kid”
But she says this enraged the captain who demanded they leave before the flight would take off.
She said: ‘How we were treated was disgusting. The captain decided because of my daughter’s allergy he didn’t want to fly with her on board.
Did he in fact decide he had some disruptive people annoying everyone?
‘When he found out I had spoken to the other passengers he was screaming at me from the cockpit. He was so angry, the next thing I knew we were told to get off the plane.
‘It is really beautiful how every passenger on that plane was so wonderful but nobody working on that plane showed one ounce of compassion.’
Every passenger!
‘We have spent the last 12 years trying to teach people about the allergy and to use epi-pens. It’s a volatile allergen and even if Rosie didn’t come into direct contact with a peanut, if somebody was eating one on board she could die.
Nadim Ednan-Laperouse, OBE, co-founder of The Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, the UK’s food allergy charity, said: ‘Food allergies are an illness not a lifestyle choice, and the experience of this family on board a plane is shocking and unacceptable.
Of course it is! Here is a chance for Co-founder Nutty to get the news time often refused
‘The airline should immediately re-appraise the way they engage with food allergic customers and make their policies clear on their website.
‘Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. We often hear from families with food allergies who tell us their awful stories about airline travel.”
Nadim added: ‘Latest figures from the Food Standards Agency show there are now 2.4 million adults in the UK with a diagnosed food allergy, in addition to huge numbers of children with food allergies. Airlines need to recognise that people with food allergies are their customers and take action to ensure everyone can travel safely.’
Meanwhile, the family took an EasyJet flight to the holiday resort the following day and said crew happily made several announcements asking passengers not to open packets of peanuts on board.
But the family was forced to spend an extra £5,000 booking the additional flights, an airport hotel and other costs.
$12k for a family of four to travel from Spain to the UK and have a night in a hotel? Who were they flying with – Lear Jets R Us?
Ms Palmer said: ‘Rosie is in a terrible state about this. It has ruined her holiday.
‘We don’t go away all the time, we maybe fly once a year and have never had problems with other airlines.
‘If we had known that policy we would never have booked with them but we have been through the website with a fine-tooth comb and there is nothing.
‘There was no way to tell the airline beforehand so how many people with peanut allergies will fly on SunExpress this summer not knowing the policy.
‘It’s been three days and we haven’t heard anything from SunExpress. Our insurance says the captain has the discretion to remove people for no reason.’
In an Instagram post, Ms Palmer added: ‘We gently asked the passengers at the front of the plane to share our request, and, row by row, as swift as a carefully crafted toppling domino trail, all the passengers turned back to kindly ask the row behind to please not eat nuts on the flight.
‘It was calm, earnest & with an overwhelming sense of solidarity & empathy.
Bollocks!
‘There’s no beef with simple asks like these. People get it! The hand holding, tears & emotion from the passengers as we were hoofed off the plane after the angry little captain shouted at us from the cockpit.’
A spokesman for SunExpress said: ‘We take the safety of our passengers very seriously. Shortly after boarding our flight from London Gatwick, the passenger raised a concern about one of his family group having a serious peanut allergy and requested an announcement to other passengers.
‘We refrain from making these kinds of announcements as, like many other airlines, we cannot guarantee an allergen-free environment on our flights, nor prevent other passengers from bringing food items containing allergens on board.
‘Due to the insistent behaviour of the passenger to others on board that they should not consume nuts, the captain decided it would be safest if the family did not travel on our flight.
Aha!
‘When this was explained to the passenger, he did exhibit aggressive behaviour towards our crew members, and tried to gain access to the cockpit.
Did he indeed? Was he then threatened with arrest and decided to go the Full Nutty to get out of it?
‘To ensure the safety of our crew and our passengers on board, we cannot tolerate aggressive and unruly behaviour on our flights.
‘Additionally, our website states that passengers must notify us 48 hours in advance of any special care required due to a medical condition and no such notification was received from the passengers in this instance.
‘However, we are fully aware that this was an upsetting situation for the family, and we are taking the incident as an opportunity to conduct a review of the information provided during our booking process to ensure more effective solutions for passengers with allergies.’
In response Mr Sollom said that while he was ‘irked’ by the decision to end the family’s holiday before it had started, ‘at no point did I behave aggressively towards any of the crew’.
He added that after being told his bags were to be offloaded, he asked to speak to the captain to plead his case and knocked twice on the cockpit door before leaving the plane.
Sure mate! And everyone back in the UK knows you’re a tosser!
