There are two options here.
One, manage the risk. DJT – remembering he’s a former rather than current POTUS, so his detail will be substantial but nowhere near Biden’s – speaks at big, public-space rallies to tens of thousands of punters every second day, all around the country for months at a time.
It simply wouldn’t be possible to have every single building ‘covered by security’ within 2000m of the podium – 2000m being the outside range of elite snipers.
Plus, a rooftop is one of the last places they’d ‘cover’. Ideally you’d want to position yourself inside a room, far enough back to hide muzzle flash and with a direct line of sight to target and also with a backdrop to camouflage you.

I regularly target shoot out to 1600m. Due to the vagaries of wind, and the need for precise ranging, any first shot head sized hit becomes increasingly difficult beyond about 500m, and indeed, typical police sniper ranges are around 100-200m. Securing all possible shooter spots out to 500m would have been easy at this fairly open venue, let alone a ring 1/2 that size.
Like the Israeli border breach, something is very smelly about this security ‘lapse’.

Given he was hit in the right ear from behind I suspect that photo is indeed of the bullet that grazed him.
So it wasn’t “following an attempted asassination” it was literally a split second before the attempted assassination.

Gunman reportedly a 20-year-old man from Pennsylvania

The gunman who shot Donald Trump in the middle of a Republican rally was reportedly 20 year old Pennsylvania man, Thomas Matthew Crooks.
The NY Post has identified Crooks as the gunman who fired multiple shots at the former US President, one of which grazed his ear.
Sources said Crooks was planted on a roof about 275m from the stage at Butler Farm Show grounds.
Crooks was killed by US Secret Service snipers within minutes of the attempted assassination.
An earlier statement from the Secret Service noted agents had “neutralised the shooter, who is now deceased.”
“US Secret Service quickly responded with protective measures and former President Trump is safe. One spectator was killed, and two spectators were critically injured,” the statement read.
“This incident is currently under investigation. and the Secret Service has notified the FBI.”

Hairy corrects me that the shooter wasn’t aiming directly between Trump’s eye but at the back part of his his head, his brain, and Trump’s head turn to the right was what saved him. Hairy’s done all the specs on the angles etc so I believe him. He also thinks the shooter would have to have had some very good sniper training in order to take that shoot. Not just your ordinary antifa thug, he opines.
From only 100 m with an AR-15 it’d be dead easy. Especially if he had a scope. But even without a scope it’d be easy.

It was, I think, a good thing for Trump to take Biden’s call. If he had not it might have been read by some people as a pointed accusation of complicity on the part of the White House and inflamed tempers further, particularly in the context of the ongoing escalating tricks to keep Trump from contesting the next election. And, frankly, all the snippets and fragments of information we have now will have a half-life measured in days. In a few days half of the stuff being sprayed about on news reports, blogs, and X, will be discovered to be inaccurate and replaced with details not even examined yet.
By taking the call (which will itself have no human value in itself because Biden is scarcely human and his staff not at all) Trump is signalling to remain civil and not to do anything precipitate.
To be honest I really would not put government complicity beyond the bounds of possibility but you really want to be sure before saying so because establishing a precedent of just leaping to conclusions based upon worst expectations of an opponent will not serve America well.
And it is going to be Trump’s and the ordinary folk he represents’ America after all.

Sorry, KD, but anyone on a roof within 200m of Trump with a rifle in hand that has time to lie prone and take several shoots is a massive security failure. The fact that it is easy to identify the relevant buildings in a semi-rural area, you have counter-sniper teams with binos monitoring the area, and it looks like members of the public spotted this before security did is terrible. I have also now heard talk that the counter-sniper steams were local police, not SS.

I make no claim to any sort of expertise but I get the sense that people often, immediately after abrupt traumatic events, can form an eerie ‘normal’ focus on minutiae.

I have heard it said in certain circles that when a POTUS has a planned visit to, say an overseas location and with a dedicated itinerary, that the SS will deploy advance parties weeks ahead to scope out just these sorts of things.
Their resources will be finite. Trump will of course have SS details, but not nearly to the level of the current bumbler. Therefore, and given the multitude of speaking events DJT is doing across multiple states and in quick succession, if they are relying on local jacks for counter-sniper response it will be lacking compared to planned and organised SS activities.
Nobody’s going to say ‘Donald you have to scale back your speech program’, so local blokes will have to be relied on for things like counter-sniper functions.
Add in multiple communication nets forced on them by the abovementioned reliance (which may or may not explain the delays the big ranga witness pointed out – ‘he’s over there, on the roof’), and it’s probably not terrible they separated the bloke’s head from the rest of him in the time they did.

Yes.
I get what KD says in a general sense about scoping out locations and managing risk.
But this wasn’t a five mile motorcade through residential apartment buildings which is very difficult to manage.
It was a static location with only 4-5 possible elevated vantage points. The simple solution would be to secure the entry points to those locations and declare the rooftops a no-go zone. Helicopter (or even a $199.95 drone) surveillance would have ensured that protocol wasn’t breached, or at least dealt with in seconds if it was.
I think we are going to see more rallies in stadiums with controlled entry points than open fields.
To watch monty trying to defend an attempt on the frontrunner to the Presidency, by refusing to accept that someone from his side of politics tried this shit, is astonishing.

Correct, Crooks (if that’s his name),as seen lying on the roof, was shot in the back of the head, as shown by the congealed blood trails.
The TWO police snipers (there was no spotter in the photos) would have shot Crooks in the face or around the left side of the head. Also, their high-caliber weapons/bullets would have blown out Crook’s right skull region, the photo shows no such injury..

Depends on the range (and in this case the microphone effects)… a suppressed 223 at 150m would not be particularly loud.

My interpretation… The video shows trump made a little orbit around the mic when he wanted to look at the chart and talk about it, so his head moved forward slightly at the same time he turned right. That may have been enough to make all the difference.

Depends on the range (and in this case the microphone effects)… a suppressed 223 at 150m would not be particularly loud.
Just my $0.02..
The Trump rally microphone/s picked up remarkably quiet, dry cracks, no boom whatsoever. Maybe that was simply artifact from poor equipment.
AFAIK, suppressors only reduce sound blast by 10-15dB, from 110+ dBs for any reasonable ammo, so the neighbours will still call the cops.. even if some blocks away.
After all, ear protection at the range isn’t for cosmetic effect.
One might get lucky with subsonic .22s.. just.. on a noisy day, but suppressed standard or high velocity .22s can still wake the dead, as would stock-standard .223s.
Can’t comment on subsonic .223s, but the powder load is higher than for any rimfire, so one would expect a significant boom, not the wimpy cracks at the Trump rally.
It’s all very puzzling.
I doubt I would chose any subsonic round for this task because whats the point? It would just take longer to get there, and have less energy when it did, making for a less accurate and less lethal shot. A suppressed 223 would still be supersonic, and thats what made the crack picked up at the podium. I have worked the butts at many a centrefire shoot and the loudest noise at 200m is the crack as the round breaks the sound barrier over your head. The noise from the gun comes later and is much quieter, given it is coming from 200m away, whereas the supersonic crack is being generated right where you are.
Many are getting hung up on the reporting that an AR platform was used, thus assuming it was a 5.56/.223 or even 7.62/.308 round.
But several manufacturers make AR platforms in .22, which would account for the apparent sound. I own one myself and shoot Federal’s 36-grain CPHP (copper-plated hollow-point) load for long range varmint tasks. Very effective and quite accurate out to 300 yards if one knows what they are doing.
