Of to Cork on the bus tomorrow. The train goes via Limerick and only very late or very early so bus it is.
The walking tour from the Bishop’s palace around the Viking triangle was good, about 50 minutes, some good local history without treading on domestic bunions.
A couple of Australian connections, the inventor of the Irish flag Thomas Meagher was transported to Van Diemens Land for his part in the Rebellion of 1848 but escaped to America where he took part in the Civil War.
And in the Bishop’s palace museum was a walking stick once owned by Archbishop Mannix, given to his friend De Valera.
Huguenots also got a mention, they apparently introduced white bread to Waterford and the ‘blaa’ was born.
I wanted to buy one but Dunnes only sold four packs.
I’ve a little soda bread loaf I’m slowly working through anyhow.
That’s a very good bread indeed.
Oh and the Irish pronoun scone ‘scown’, which I though was an Americanism.

Here in St Moritz, in the middle of Switzerland, with a warning for you: Do NOT come here and get your bike serviced – you have been warned! Near our (three-star) hotel is a bike shop. The one on sale out the front was a snip at Aus$8,632, or you can get a minor service for $705. Every second car is a BMW – the others are all Porsches, Ferraris and Lambos. Maseratis are the only real head turners.

From Zurich we took a 1928 paddleboat steamer, and then a train trip to Lucerne. Into the Alps and magnificent scenery of course. Moving around the cities to see the sights – Lindt chocolate factory was one – is easy with an incredibly efficient (and free if you are the right age!) public transport system. We took the Bernina Express to get to St Moritz, twice home to the Winter Olympics; which features in the Peter Sarstedt song “Where do you Go To my Lovely?”:

And when the snow falls you’re found in St. Moritz
With the others of the jet set
And you sip your Napoleon brandy
But you never get your lips wet, no, you don’t
But where do you go to, my lovely
When you’re alone in your bed?
Won’t you tell me the thoughts that surround you?
I want to look inside your head, yes, I do

Apparently Sarstedt was earning £60K from it in 1998, even though it was released in 1969.

Tomorrow is skiing via helicopter, and then apres-ski with some shallow pretentious famous film types who have photographers trailing them. Magnums of Bollinger and impudent little skewers of well-done lamb before settling in for five courses and a string quartet. Alternatively it could be checking out some sights with the help of the 50% off Swiss Travel Pass. I’m sure Mrs TE will tell me.

I file this under ‘I didn’t know this’ and that list is growing every day.

——————-
When a mature coconut falls from its tree and remains undisturbed, a remarkable transformation begins.

Inside the hard shell, the coconut water starts to be absorbed by the inner seed, leading to the formation of a unique structure known as a “coconut apple” or “sprouted coconut.”

This coconut apple has a fluffy, cotton-like texture and a sweet, juicy taste that is both delightful and nourishing.

As the coconut apple develops, it provides essential nutrients to the growing embryo within the seed. This nourishment is crucial for the germination process, enabling the embryo to sprout and eventually grow into a new coconut tree.

The coconut apple’s role in this natural cycle is vital, as it ensures the continuation of coconut trees in tropical regions.

Fun fact. Another plant wiped out and kept out by custodians of the land.

Cook & Flinders were scratching their heads why the tropics of Australia had no coconuts but they were everywhere in the TI & south Pacific.

Turns out the custodians of the land worked out they were edible and like the megafauna promptly at them out of existence.

https://www.dark-emu-exposed.org/home/ancient-australians-the-worlds-first-9p2h6-hmgfm-tsr6f-wsjp9

Now NQ councils with greenies are trying to assert coconuts aren’t native to remove them from shorelines. Whitsunday Council is zealous on this one, they are at it again despite a few years back rate payers overwhelmingly telling them to leave their coconut palms alone.

Paris 2024 “apologizes” for ‘Last Supper’ sketch after criticism

Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group. [The opening ceremony] tried to celebrate community tolerance,” Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps said at a news conference. “We believe this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offense, we are really sorry.”

No, that’s a dishonest non-apology. There was clearly an intention to do exactly that.

We imagined a ceremony to show our values and our principles so we gave a very committed message,” Paris 2024 president Tony Estanguet said.

Since October 7 2023, a hideous cauldron of leftist, far-leftist and Pallie Nazi supporters have been allowed to walk through London streets on a weekly basis, spewing Jew hatred, spruiking Hamas as freedom fighters, threatening people (particularly Jews), and waving Hamas, Hezbollah and Nazi flags. Muslim radical organisations like Hizbut Tahrir been been allowed to scream through megaphones….’Yahood, Yahood, Yahood, the armies of Mohamad are coming for you‘. All the while London plod have done nothing because you see, London plod are now big on ‘context’, apparently threatening and screaming death to Jews and waving swastikas in the air depends on the ‘context’ and so there have been no arrests of the aforementioned human scum, and the UK Tory government and now UK Labour government sit back and wash their hands, it was just all too hard.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, a British patriot, a lad from Luton, a man who has sounded the alarm about Islam for years now, a working class lad who’s the true descendant of Wat Tyler, organised a rally of almost 100,000 UK patriots, of ordinary men and women of all colours and religions who walked London streets peacefully, singing ‘Rule Britannia’ and “God save the King’, waving the Union Jack, waving the flag of St George, waving the Israeli flag, waving the flag of Imperial Iran, shouting how they wanted their country back.

Overnight the London Plod have again arrested this lad from Luton, this British patriot. And the charge? Well wait for it, don’t fall off your seat, the lad from Luton has been arrested under ‘anti-terrorism’ laws for leading an entirely peaceful march through the streets of London on Saturday.

Coz, you see, it’s all about the ‘context’.

But we here can’t point any fingers. Whilst the NSWaffen Police have been busy rounding up the Wakeley Church Christian rioters, not one Muslim or leftist rioter from Monday night 9 October 2023 has yet been charged…..

NOT ONE.

Karvelas runs a curious article this morning on the ABC talking about the Cabinet reshuffle but also citing an ANU study that indicates a significant slump in confidence in the Albanese government.”Confidence in the government has steadily declined from 51.2 per cent in January 2023 to 38.5 per cent in January 2024.” The conclusion drawn is that disillusion is not specific to one group but the level of education achieved (ie completed a degree or not) seems to be a factor, with those without a degree more likely to have lost confidence. Immigration and housing affordability are mentioned as key issues being addressed in the reshuffle.

I can’t help but think that both the study and Karvelas are misdirecting focus away from some of the biggest issues eroding confidence in the Albanese government such as the increased cost of living, energy costs and unreliability, the costs of doing business and anger that even though The Voice was defeated at the referendum, the general public is being subjected to increased Native title legislation, unsolicited unpronounceable Aboriginal name changes and a raft of other measures that are undermining confidence in the government. I would be interested in others views as I had difficulty unravelling the article. Linked here https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-07-29/anthony-albanese-reshuffle-voter-confidence/104152634

It is interesting that the Government has also dropped the ‘Assistant Minister for the Republic’ role. Particularly after Murdoch stated that we would be a republic within 10 years and the ABC ran a long interview last week with one of the joint heads of the republic movement. The texts and emails selected for broadcast in response to the interview were surprisingly quite diverse.

This is truly sick stuff, and the person who imagined it and those who condoned it, are no better than those who celebrate the public beheading of women in Afghanistan. Or the honour killing. Or a stoning in some other sh*thole.

Yet what is the graphic representing this Olympics? A flame shaped like a woman’s head.

We have drag queens carrying the torch and lampooning women in a tableau and on the catwalk, actual women modelling ridiculous, unwearable garments.

Suella Braverman thinks the Tory Party is unfixable.

Kemi Badenoch enters Tory leadership race with claim to get back in power by 2030 (28 Jul)

Kemi Badenoch has launched her bid to be Conservative Party leader. …

It comes just minutes after Suella Braverman dramatically announced she was stepping down from the race.

In an article for the Telegraph she wrote: “Although I’m grateful to the 10 MPs who wanted to nominate me for the leadership, getting on to the ballot is not enough.

“There is, for good or for ill, no point in someone like me running to lead the Tory Party when most of the MPs disagree with my diagnosis and prescription.”

She said the party’s disastrous election result was down to failures on migration, taxes and “transgender ideology”.

She added: “I’ve been branded mad, bad and dangerous enough to see that the Tory Party does not want to hear this. And so I will bow out here.”

Well that’s certainly telling it like it is. True too. The trouble with it is she is the most popular candidate amongst Conservative Party members. They clearly want someone “mad, bad and dangerous” to right the sinking ship.

Doesn’t look like the remaining MPs want the ship righted though.

In Oh Merde news:

Paris 2024: Triathlon training cancelled because of River Seine pollution

The swimming event in the triathlon, which also sees athletes take part in long distance running and cycling, is currently planned to take place in Paris’ iconic river.

However, after tests showed that the water quality was not safe enough to swim in, World Triathlon and the Paris 2024 team made a joint decision to cancel Sunday’s training session.

If the water still isn’t up to standard by the time the triathlon event starts on Tuesday 30 July, then the swimming could be either postponed or moved to Vaires-sur-Marne, on the Marne river east of Paris.

Some years ago, I did a tourist trip around the Paris Sewers – yes, yes, I know, but it was fascinating.

One Fun Fact sticks in my mind. Paris is dog central and (as any pedestrian knows) they are generally allowed to crap wherever and nobody picks up.

Apparently this generates 50 tonnes per day of al fresco dog poo, much of which ends up in the Seine via the stormwater system.

It appears the €1.4bn panic sewer upgrade was not enough.

An Olympic commentator has been kicked off the Olympic broadcast after making a sexist remark about the gold-medal winning Australian women’s 4x100m relay team.

The comment?

After Emma McKeon, Shayna Jack, Mollie O’Callaghan and Meg Harris won gold Eurosports broadcaster Bob Ballard could be heard saying, “Well the women are just finishing up. You know what women are like … hanging around, doing their makeup.”

Nothing remotely sexist about this, given now that men like to use the stuff. We live in stupid times.

Labor, the CFMEU, and the war on small business

Mitch Browne The Spectator Australia 28 July 2024

Labor governments across the country have expressed their astonishment at the revelation their mates and financiers in the CFMEU might, allegedly, include underworld figures and engage in organised crime. Who could have imagined an organisation built on bribery, kickbacks, and physical intimidation would stoop so low? Some cynics are claiming Labor must have known the construction division of the CFMEU was corrupt. But that’s a bit harsh. The only time Labor MPs have ever been near a construction site is when they pose wearing a hard hat and hi-vis for campaign photos.

The Labor Party today has no interest in anyone who actually works in manual labour.

The CFMEU has no interest in projects being completed efficiently and cost-effectively. It makes no difference if the client is a wealthy developer or a cash-strapped local council spending public money. The union MO is to fleece the client for all they can get, then send kickbacks to the Labor Party for protection.

It is a war waged against the public interest. But that is in union DNA. From coal strikes depriving families of heating during winter, to waterfront action harming our own troops in the second world war, the union rap sheet is long and odious.

It is perhaps the more subtle misdeeds that, in accumulation, hurt society most. These go almost entirely unnoticed. One example from my own experience serves to highlight the public cost of featherbedding in the construction industry.

I was a self-employed brickie working on a new community centre for a local council in Western Sydney. I was working below ground. There wasn’t much room down there, so the materials we needed throughout the day had to be lowered by crane as we needed them. The crane was operated by union members.

I worked six days a week, but there was a public holiday on the coming Monday. No work is allowed on construction sites on public holidays. I mentioned to one of the crane operators that I was annoyed I couldn’t work on Monday.

‘Why does the government force people not to work if we want to?’ I said. ‘Why are they making me have two days off?’

‘Two days off?’ he responded.

‘Yeah. After we finish on Saturday I’ve got to take Sunday and Monday off.’

‘There’ll be no work Saturday.’ He said. ‘We’re shutting the site down for the long weekend.’

‘Three days off?’ I said.

‘No. Union Picnic Day on Tuesday.’

‘Four days off?’ I thought he was having me on now.

‘Right.’ He said. ‘And we don’t want to leave the crane on site unattended for four days, so it will have to be sent back to the yard.’

‘What does that mean?’ I asked.

‘It means you’ll have to give us Friday to pack the crane up and send it back to the yard. Then, after the Picnic Day on Tuesday, you’ll have to give us Wednesday to get the crane back from the yard and set it all up again before you can start work.’

So in the end, because there was a public holiday on the Monday, work had to stop on the Thursday, and couldn’t start up again until the following Thursday.

These swindlers are so adept at fudging numbers and skimming off the top that in their world, one public holiday equals an entire week of lost productivity. A week they get full pay for, while no work gets done. Remember, this was a community centre, built at public expense.

This is Labor’s world. If you’re an insider, a patched-up member of their gang, you will be looked after. Society pays the bill.

If you choose not to affiliate, well then, they have some persuasive friends who might want a chat with you in private.

As with all gangs, they will snuff out any competition on their turf. This explains Labor’s war on small business.

Employees of small business are generally not unionised. Those who are self-employed can’t join a union. This means no union fees, and no kickbacks from the union to their protection racket, the Labor Party.

It is those kickbacks from the unions that fund Labor’s election campaigns. Labor won’t end the culture of kickbacks and dodgy behaviour in the construction unions, because Labor has been one of its biggest beneficiaries. The Albanese government was produced by the Melbourne underworld.

This government has instructed the Australian Taxation Office to aggressively pursue all debts owed by small business. Their justification is that the leniency offered during the pandemic should be terminated now the good times are back.

Except, times have not been good. For many small businesses in construction, the unusually wet years following the pandemic have been tougher than the pandemic itself. In our industry, when it rains, employees get full pay to do no work (yep, that was a union idea). There have been a lot of rain days in the last three years. So it is understandable that construction businesses have been taking longer to pay off their debts. Not because they’re trying to enrich themselves, but because they’re trying to survive.

Labor’s tax office assault on small business could not have come at a worse time. Record numbers of construction businesses have collapsed already. There will be many more to come. These businesses are not being replaced. Many are leaving the industry for good. So when Labor says it is ramping up the number of houses being built in order to ease the housing affordability crisis, don’t believe it. Who does it think is going to build them?

Labor and their associates want the construction industry to be a closed-shop extortion racket. Anyone who has the audacity to set up their own small business must be brought to heel or shut down for good.

The message of the previous coalition government was: if you have a go, you’ll get a go.

The threat from Labor and its mobster trade union puppet masters is: if you dare have a go, we’ll go you.

I’ll say it again:

The Labor Party is a criminal outfit with a party political front.

The Labor Party is a criminal outfit with a party political front.

Australians forget or never knew that unions came first and created the Australian Labor Party to represent them in parliament.

So their parliamentary puppets aren’t going to complain about or resist the descent into gangsterism by their union paymasters like the CFMEU, which supplies the ALP with millions of dollars annually.

Anthony Albanese and his regime in Canberra are a creation of union gangsters.

German Publisher Stops All Printing Of JD Vance’s Book Hillbilly Elegy (29 Jul)

…the publishing house Ullstein Buchverlage has stopped printing the sold-out German translation of Hillbilly Elegy, his 2016 autobiography. … Ullstein is facing a high demand for Vance’s best-selling book Hillbilly Elegy, but has refused to print more copies due to his political viewpoints (unrelated to the book). …

German author Gerd Buurmann posted a mocking response that we should be happy that Ullstein had just thrown Vance’s book out of its catalogue and not into the fire – a reference to the notorious Nazi book burnings of the 1930s.

You’d think they might’ve learned something from their own history, but it appears that they haven’t.

Memo to truck drivers: try not to crash when carrying a load of lithium batteries.

Lithium Battery Fire Sparks Traffic Mayhem Across California Desert (29 Jul)

Some X users have described the traffic chaos near Baker, California, on the northbound lanes of I-15 as ‘carmageddon.’ This followed road closures on Friday that extended well into the weekend due to an overturned truck carrying lithium-ion batteries that ignited on fire.

As of early Sunday, the California Highway Patrol wrote on X, “I-15 N/B at Harvard Rd remains closed,” adding, “Crews are currently grading the dirt around the trailer housing the hazardous material. Heavy-duty equipment is on scene, and efforts to move the trailer will continue once deemed safe for the crews.”

After two days they still can’t clear the road? And are resorting to piling dirt on top of the burning truck? I wonder what will happen when say a train full of the things derails and catches fire.

I’d like to know the voting patterns of the people forced to shut shop, considering a lot are in the cities, Daily Telegraph:

Hospitality businesses failed at the fastest rate on record in the 2024 financial year as soaring food and energy prices and a pullback in consumer spending pushed cafes and restaurants to the wall.

Cafes, restaurants and small retailers registered disproportionate growth in insolvency appointments in the past year, while consumers have been forced to pay more for essential items and pulled back from discretionary purchases.

New data from the Australian Securities & Investments Commission shows accommodation and food services insolvency appointments rose faster than any other sector in the 12 months to June 30. The number of collapses skyrocketed by 50 per cent to a record 1667, compared to its previous high of 1114 in 2023.

Retail trade appointments surged by 42.2 per cent to 768.

This compared to a 39.1 per cent jump in total insolvency appointments over the period to 11,049 – another record.

Restaurant and Catering Australia chief executive Suresh Manickam said many of his members were being squeezed from all sides during one of the toughest periods the sector has faced.

As restaurant and cafe owners struggle to cope with increased operating costs, they have also been affected by weaker demand as households look to cut back on eating out. “Higher interest rates, cost of living pressures on the up, more expensive produce and the cost of energy are all having an impact,” he said.

“Compared to this time last year, people have less money in their pockets and a reduced ability to pay and go out, and there lies the problem the sector is facing.”

Mr Manickam told The Australian the government needed to invest in apprentices and trainees to ensure the industry had access to qualified staff, along with providing subsidies for energy to safeguard the future of the hospitality sector.

Recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed monthly household spending in hotels, cafes and restaurants has declined 13 per cent since the end of 2023, slightly outpacing the broader fall in spending.

Australian Restructuring Insolvency and Turnaround Association chief executive John Winter said a sharp increase in insolvencies for accommodation, retail and hospitality operators was inevitable following the RBA’s decision to lift the cash rate from 0.1 per cent to 4.35 per cent between May 2022 and December 2023.

“This discretionary spending is what the RBA has been targeting to take heat out of the economy and cut down inflation. That’s exactly what they’ve been trying to do,” he said.

“So that’s what you would expect. That’s where you’re going to see businesses being pushed out of the market, because of the cost of money.”

The past financial year has claimed big scalps including Good Group Australia, which operated high-end steak restaurant Botswana Butchery and several other Asian venues across Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. It ceased trading in May after sacking 200 staff, with $23m in debt.

Japanese restaurant chain Okami in February placed more than a dozen outlets into voluntary administration nationally, blaming inflation and pandemic costs. In Brisbane, iconic French fine dining restaurant Montrachet entered voluntary administration along with BCN, the operator of King St Bakery in Bowen Hills and Newstead cafe and patisserie Mica.

Retailers caught in the crossfire include online bookseller Booktopia, while Godfreys Group closed for good in May after almost 100 years of selling vacuum cleaners. Local designer label Dion Lee entered voluntary administration amid poor retail sales, months after Taylor Swift was seen wearing the label at the Super Bowl.

Australian Retailers Association chief executive Paul Zahra said small retailers were in need of support more than ever before.

“Small retailers are currently facing immense pressures – from increased costs of doing business, to the consumer spending slowdown due to cost of living pressures,” he said.

“With the winter period often being one of the slowest periods in national retail trade, initiatives like the American Express Shop Small program help make a difference by encouraging new and existing customers through the doors of our retailers.” The ARA has teamed up with American Express to entice more shoppers to spend money at struggling retailers with the launch of the financial service providers’ Shop Small campaign starting August 1, offering consumers extra points per dollar and cash prizes for small businesses.

Mr Winter said hospitality and retail operators had also been targeted by the Australian Taxation Office, which has resumed a crackdown on unpaid debt after a ceasefire during the pandemic.

“When the ATO takes action it is being enforced on you as an individual, not against the company, and that actually drives people to make the decision to actually put their own business into an insolvency process,” he said.

The last time the tax on grog went up, the pub I pull beers at didn’t pass on that cost to the consumer. Prices on the menu remained so.
Although 9 bucks for a schooner isn’t to be sneezed at, still a fair whack. But better than $12

Fiji Time. This is a popular statement, made when anything is late or goes wrong, which on this cruise is frequently. Their word for it seems to connote rather what the Mexican word ‘manyana’ suggests, which is that life is lazy and there’s no use bothering too much about things. Well, fine in one of these ‘semi-subsistence’ (their description) villages in these outer islands, but it doesn’t translate as well to running mass tourism on a cruise. The time sheets handed out for catching the Zodiacs to various activities are hints rather than achieved realities. Case in point was the visit to a village church service. We got away well over an hour late and arrived just as the hour-long service finished and the congregation had dispersed.

The Chief welcoming us told us he had good news and the bad. The bad news was that the service was over, the tide was out too far now where we came in, and we had to walk a mile across a series of beachside volcanic rocks for the Zodiacs to beach safely now for our return journey after a walk through the village in the approaching dusk. The good news was that we could put our contributions in the collection dish now as he passed it around. As the village is obviously poor most of us dutifully put in our suggested five, ten or twenty dollars. Hairy donated ten. Middling appreciation. He and I had copped a big wave from the wash of the water as we entered the Zodiac and we were both soaked from the waist down.

They did allow us to enter and view the church, a rendered brick building unlike many of the more shantyish houses (except those solid homes of the elders and chiefs and their families). Young kids shyly wished us ‘bula’ (a welcome) behind louvres from the dark interiors of buildings. There was a primary school and a good playing field, some solar panels and a noisy generator going, plus rainwater tanks. Fishing tinnies with outboards seemed to be the main equipment, used a lot for travel too. We suspected Chiefly collections and ties to various Fijian organisations and government provided the main monetary incomes.

Apart from the fact that the people had a strong Christian culture and social organisation, the Big Man led culture of tradition seemed to us like many Australian aboriginal communities. But in Fiji, put a stick in the ground and up grows a breadfruit tree or similar, or dig up some root vegies almost growing wild, and you’ve got a ready food supply. Just add ocean produce for proteins. Reminded me a lot of some New Guinea highland villages I saw in 1965, although those were more primitive in style, non-coastal and had a sweet potato economic base. While we were in the church a kindly Fijian woman elder led a prayer for us which we all joined in for the amen, and the deep religiosity of the people was evident by the care taken to provide the church with its fiercely apple green curtaining everywhere, fully enhanced by elaborate white lacework around the altar and its setting.

Our trip back to the ship in the dusk was further enhanced by some Fiji Time loss of the lifejackets the Zodiac operatives had collected when we arrived. They had to go all the way back by Zodiac to our arrival point to collect the half of them (including ours) that they had forgotten to bring to this new point. Meanwhile a wind blew up more and the narrow gap we had to make between the reef edges became more indistinct and rougher. It was too dark to make out the cabin numbers on the lifejackets so they were passed out pot luck, with much fuss about making impossible readjustments to fit someone else’s size wasting further valuable minutes. Hairy got one that ended up clipping only above his armpits not around his waist.

We got back tired and unhappy, showered, missed the cocktail hour and were ready just in time for dinner. The food is reasonable, more home cooking than not, but they do try with the presentation, and we both regretted taking the tough duck rather than the nice-looking Osso Bucci, After dinner though, the fashion parade of traditional dress was a treat, fifteen minutes late of course, but so good-hearted you couldn’t object. The staff were the mannequins for the parade around of firstly the chief’s outfit, all decked out out in orange tapa with a train, the more tapa the richer and more important the chief. The chief was attended by warriors in the seagrass skirts worn by men more than women, fierce men carrying ceremonial polished but business-like knock-out sticks. Then came a bride and groom in traditional tapa with floral adornments, the effect probably enhanced by missionary attitudes, and much fun when the groom got down on his knees to propose to the giggling, hand over mouth, much blushing bride. Then came the admitted missionary-inspired clothing, very sensible and still worn a lot today, cotton shifts worn over easy-waisted skirts for both men and women, but differently styled.

All was forgiven by us when this adorned crew then burst forth into two long and marvellous Fijian hymns, sung with such affect and verve, with independent rills making up the whole, that it brought tears to my eyes. Such joy these people, staff on the ship, had in expressing their sincere Christianity, their belief in ultimate Salvation and their hope for their lives shared together. If only, I mused, they could conquer Fiji Time, and organise their kids into picking up the mess of rubbish everywhere in and around the village, then their future would be assured.

Lovely Lizzie thank you so much!
A story for Hairy.
When I was a young tacker I went off from my country school to St George’s College at UWA. Building and grounds in the spirit of the old Oxbridge colleges. The college was run by a very special lady called Matron. I know, I never knew her real name. Held in great affection and respect by everyone there, she clearly ran things with a firm hand. And a loving one.

One day I was running in the Quad, came a gutser on the eroded, sharp-toothed old concrete slab path, and chopped up the skin in my knees rather impressively.

Matron took one look at the damage; “Oooh, balum-balum!” she said.

She served many years in Fiji as a nurse she told me. Balum-balum means ‘hairy legs!’

They would have done better to have had dancers dressed as bottles of French perfume and others as bottles of wine. Should have gone with their strengths like the Brits who had wheeled hospital beds as part of their presentations.

We can truly say that for a backwater country we had a classy act with The TAP DOGS at the Sydney 2000 opening ceremony. Even the Driza-Bone clad drovers’ whip-cracking exhibition was way above anything I have seen in Paris.

I’ll make another comment about Ireland that might now change.

I’ve seen several young children with Downs

I remember thinking the same thing in Spain. I don’t know if my observations are supported by statistics.
It struck me years ago when Michelle Payne won the Melbourne Cup on Prince of Penzance. Her brother Stevie has Downs and led the horse back to scale.
All the tall willowy blondes on morning teevee cooed about how “gorgeous” and “heart warming” it all was.
Except I knew they would all have the first trimester test for Downs and abort in a heartbeat if it was positive.
And be declared “stunning and brave” for doing so.

Whatever that means.

Meanwhile, the opening ceremony has reportedly been deleted from the official IOC website.

Hey Cats, were you more scandalised by the Last Supper tableau during the Paris opening ceremony, or the headless Marie Antoinette? Tough choice, you lot still cry over the French Revolution.

Fair enough you dickless pus-bucket. But take it a bit further: what would happen if:

1 All trannies were re-categorised as having a morbid and deviant psychology and were banned from having any dealing with children; and any one who in the name of trannies attempted to influence young kids would be jailed for 10 years.

2 The trannies had been dressed up as bearded muzzies leading around their child brides and be-heading some queers.

What do you think would have happened then dickless.

So it turns out that tableau in the Olympics opening ceremony was not parodying the Last Supper at all, but was recreating a 1635 Dutch painting of the Greek gods. Which is apposite, given the Greeks invented the Games.

The painting was partially inspired by the Last Supper, so I guess you could say it was an indirect reference, but that explanation seems to invalidate your hot tears.

It’s entirely a coincidence that the colours of the costumes used, the positions of the players and their gestures correspond to the last supper.

Since the resident Nazi likes to trivialise mass murder, it is worth remembering that on 7 January 2015, at the headquarters of Charlie Hebdo in Paris, 11 men and one woman were murdered by Muslim terrorists.

More carnage occurred after the mass slaughter at Charlie Hebdo, a Muslim friend of the Hebdo butchers decided to take hostages at a kosher supermarket in eastern Paris, murdering Jews.

By the way, prior to the mass slaughter in 2016, Charlie Hebdo ridiculed Christianity and Judaism just as much as it did Islam. Does anyone recall Jews and Christians turning up at Charlie Hebdo HQ to slaughter people for blasphemy? I don’t however I am happy to be corrected.

It really is the woke Olympics. Not only did they ban air conditioners because Gaia they are trying to feed the athletes with rabbit food.

Food Situation in Olympic Village Ongoing (27 Jul)

Food has become a major issue in the Olympic Village as the Paris Games are underway. …

Paris Olympic officials attempted to offer more plant-based foods in an effort to reduce the Games’ carbon footprint. While there is a variety of cuisine available to accommodate the tastes of different countries — and an abundance of baguettes in France — vegan meals aren’t in line with what the athletes prefer to eat while competing.

One British athlete told the Times that the food situation is chaotic compared to the well organized facilities in Tokyo.

Anthony Albanese’s decision to parachute Tony Burke into the troubled home affairs portfolio may be about fixing some of the government’s immigration woes,

Unless the “fixing” is related to internal party votes or horse races Id suggest Mt Burquas ability to make situation better by dribbling his intellect and deep knowledge into situations may actually be negative.

Hes from the “if I smack myself in the testicles with this mallet long enough, it will stop hurting” branch of deep thinkers.

Olympics’ Last Supper debacle was latest effort to denigrate Western culture

After a storm of international protest, the organizers have issued a weak we’re-sorry-if-you-were-offended apology. They say they were shocked that anyone was bothered by what they say was a testament to inclusion.

But its biggest sin was not blasphemy. It was that it stunk on ice, as most such efforts do.

Why was it designed to stink? Again, power.

Ceremonies like the Paris opener… are intended to mock and denigrate the underlying Western culture,

Crime

Mum jailed for forcing daughter to marry her killer
A mother who forced her 20-year-old daughter to marry a man who later murdered her in Perth has been jailed.
Sakina Muhammad Jan, 48, did not react as Victorian County Court Judge Fran Dalziel sentenced her to three years behind bars.
She will be released from custody on a recognisance order after 12 months and faces deportation to Afghanistan once released from custody.
Jan forced her daughter Ruqia Haidari to marry Mohammad Ali Halimi in August 2019.
He killed his young bride five months later and is serving a life prison term for her murder.
The court was told Jan coerced Ms Haidari into the marriage after the 20-year-old’s first arranged marriage ended in divorce.
Ms Haidari was considered “bewa” by the Hazara community, meaning she had lost her value.

But I am sure the Liberals and Nationals know how to return fire (pardon the pun) or perhaps not. If not then I am more than happy to remind them. I can kick them a lesson in how to play mean and how to throw the swill back. After all, it’s rather infamous incident, anyone else recall, as I do, how the Slushing Slug once shouted out, in parliament no less, to a female Coalition MP the following words……..

Turkish President Erdogan has made a series of statements threatening military action against Israel, drawing parallels to Turkey’s past interventions in Karabakh and Libya. Erdogan emphasized the need for Turkey to be strong in order to protect Palestinians and suggested that similar military actions could be taken against Israel. These statements have sparked widespread concern and condemnation, particularly given Turkey’s status as a NATO member. The threats have been widely reported across various media outlets and have raised questions about the potential implications for regional stability and international relations.

Nampijinpa Price says work for the dole is a priority for McCarthy
Paige Taylor
Coalition Indigenous affairs spokeswoman Jacinta Nampijinpa Price says fixing the dormant work for the dole scheme in remote communities must be a priority for Malarndirri McCarthy as she begins work as the Albanese government’s new Indigenous Australians minister.

The program – known as the Commonwealth Development Program – has been voluntary since 2021 when politicians on both sides of politics acknowledged it needed to be overhauled. The CDP was found to barely function in some locations in part because it required participants to have a wifi connection, a mobile phone and good English to meet reporting requirements. In consultations with communities in every state and the NT, the jobs program is being redesigned with mutual obligations including that participants must attend work.

Senator Nampijinpa Price told The Australian on Monday that she hoped Senator McCarthy would succeed in getting the work for the dole program back on track.

“The Indigenous Affairs portfolio is languishing under the Albanese government,” Senator Nampijinpa Price said.

“Too many organisations such as NAAJA, the Land Councils and other aboriginal corporations are showing signs of being unfit for purpose.

“It is my hope that Malarndirri McCarthy will use her appointment as Minister for Indigenous Australians to improve these bodies so that they start functioning the way they should be; to get the CDP back on track and to ensure that resources in the portfolio are being used effectively to improve the lives of some of our most marginalised who Minister McCarthy now represents.”

On Monday the women-led Uluru Dialogue welcomed the swearing in of Senator McCarthy as the new Indigenous Australians minister and flagged its intention to continue to work towards constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians. Uluru Dialogue campaigned for a constitutionally-enshrined Indigenous voice to parliament which was voted down at the referendum on October 14 last year. Co-chairs Megan Davis, UNSW Scientia and Balnaves Chair in Constitutional Law, and Pat Anderson, who has been appointed an officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service in Aboriginal health, are now leading a movement with support from some of the 6.2 million Australians who voted yes at the referendum.

In a joint statement, Professor Davis and Ms Anderson said that they agreed with former Indigenous Australians minister Linda Burney that the opportunity for a referendum would come again.

“Linda said the result was a great opportunity that was missed but it will come back some day. We agree. Awareness of constitutional recognition, and the First Nations support for it, has never been more critical,” they said.

“While we continue to review the data and build the movement with our 6.2 million fellow Aussies, we celebrate the appointment of the Hon. Malarndirri McCarthy as she takes over the portfolio. We warmly welcome, congratulate and look forward to working with her.

“With Linda’s retirement and Malarndirri’s appointment, we celebrate the formidable leadership of First Nations women.

“Our work continues.”

Mmmyes.
The mincing poodle artistic director slipped that one through in the run-down with a non-descript tag something like “tableau of Dutch painting by Van der Fagg comes to life”.
No-one asked and no-one was told.
If it had been listed as “Pisstake of the Last Supper” on the running sheet, it would have ended up on the cutting room floor.
One thing is for sure.
The closing ceremony will be getting the fine tooth comb treatment as we speak, and the alleged artistic director being told to pull anything offensive. Along with a reminder that Mincing Poodle Productions will not get their final payment if anyone pulls a stunt by going (wink nudge) “off script”.

Keep one of these charts in your wallet or purse. This is what socialism does to country that at one stage was the one of the wealthiest nations in South America, then a socialist dictator took hold.

St Louis Fed shows in 2011, Venezuela had a PPP GDP of US$700 billion. By 2019, the fcking socialist moron had run it down to US$7.1 billion.

That’s a collapse of 98.9% of GDP when measured in PPP.

This chart shows real GDP in dollars. Between 2013 and 2019, real GDP fell by ~70%

On balance, Maduro is likely smarter than the Kamal Toe.

Today in calm millpond sea we travelled dry by smooth Zodiac to another village associated with the famed Sacred Island, said to be the first place where Fijians arrived in the Pacific. Requires a kava presentation for entry. We didn’t go there, waited for the afternoon run into the major village of five on the island, to visit a boarding school and then go for a village tour.

We all purchased some Fiji sarongs from local fat ladies (as they mostly are) sitting patiently for our arrival, and some even purchased other artifacts, but being beware of shells due to Aussie customs. Then the school visit, where a crowd of very eager primary school children sang us songs in their main hall, and the very walls were alive with the echoes of happiness and they did hands, nose, fingers, feet and face for us in song and actions. The sixty of us all clapped and gestured along. After that it was Fijian songs, loud and clappy, traditional stuff led by a six foot four teacher almost as wide as high, who kept those boys in order with a glance; kind but firm. The boys and girls sat separately, as the sexes also do in church.

One of the items was a sort of courting ritual, where a girl and boy passed each other, did a double-take of interest, and then went into sex-appropriate paroxysms of delight, concentrating on attracting the chosen one. It was done in individual acts, reminiscent to me of some birds courting. Two teams chosen at random sent out a member to do the individual turn: when a largish girl of about 12 matched up with a squib of a boy about 8 then sparks flew; the girl put on a great ‘female’ show and the boy went wildly OTT with his dancing and posturing. A great deal of hilarity ensued from everyone then due to the tremendously creative displays the kids produced.
This is free primary education using the ‘pigeon’ language known to all far-flung islanders, and also in English. The three R’s were big on the list. Like my own childhood up on the wall: geometry and angles, times tables, days in each month, the area of a circle, and maps of where other countries were.
We purchased stationary kits for the school and also donated money to this very worthy cause.

This village was totally different to the last one. There wasn’t a skerrick of rubbish anyway, all was very neat housing in one long row, mostly breeze or cement block construction, very well cared for and people were proud of their homes, still working on making pathways and surroundings. The chief is dead, the heir apparent is absent not interested, and the place is run by women, who showed us around, including the formidable local nurse. Go figure. The pastor comes regularly but doesn’t live on site. The church is huge, and well-appointed, for major festivities drawn in from other villages. We gave a good donation to the church box because it is the church life and the women who hold this village together. Some young guys were busy making Kava. Also traditional.

Was Jesus present at the Big Bang, Titus?

Well:-

For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him He is before all things, and in Him, all things hold together.

Any Christian, Catholic or Protestant would answer yes, according to Colossians 1, however we understand the beginning.

The point I am trying to get at is that once you start mixing theology and cosmology, you quickly descend into silliness.

“Smart religious scholars”?

Is that your description of yourself, someone who claims to be a Catholic, but is completely ignorant of Christian theology?

Was becoming a (nominal) Catholic a condition of your marriage into the upper middle class? It certainly does not seem that you have any deep Christian beliefs.

Smart religious scholars know not to take the Bible so literally.

uh huh.

Which “religious” scholars? How do you define literally?

What parts are “literal”? What are not?

So when Jesus makes statements about himself; i.e John 8 :58 “Before Abraham was, I am”, is he making a big theological statement? Or is it a sort of Ron Burgundy statement of “I’m kind of a big deal round here.”

Are St Paul’s great Christological statements in Ephesians and Colossians saying something that the Church Fathers and most theologians liberal and conservative would agree with.

Plus, when talking about “literalism” and the Bible, are you talking about historical narrative? Apocalyptic literature, New Testament epistles and so on. Dismissing taking the Bible literally can mean all sorts of different things. I am theologically conservative, but not everything I believe is literal. I.e I don’t believe “the trees clap their hands”. But I do believe that many other parts of the Bible can be taken literally.

I don’t pretend to be an expert, but I have at least read and studied theology for a little while.

But I, of course defer to the wisdom of a fantasy football fellow and ocean going, Olympic standard rubbish troll.

Tonight after dinner we are all going to watch Tom Hanks in ‘Castaway’. I’ve seen it with girlfriends, Hairy hasn’t. We spent yesterday early arvo at the ‘Castaway’ island enjoying the sun (me) while Hairy went snorkelling. On the beach someone has kept going the film’s writing of ‘HELP’ constructed out of logs. We sat under a small bamboo shelter possibly also from the film (or maintained from it) where I spied a length of bamboo pipe that I seemed to recall Tom Hanks using to direct water down from a stream; still there, the pipe anyway, the stream was always a movie myth. Most of the islands use artesian-drawn water.

Our shelter was also invaded by some Russian speakers seemingly from an impressive ocean-going yacht that had just pulled in, the only other craft around. They yabbered on in Russian for a while. Were they Oligarchs? Hairy suggested to me, so I said are you speaking Russian and they said Yes. Enjoy your beer, Hairy said to them in Russian as we left which quite surprised them. Alternatively, they might have been Ukrainian crew assisting the Ukrainian ship’s engineer on our own cruise. Whichever, they were young men of military age escaping the draft, either which way, Russian or Ukrainian.

After the movie tonight we have to pack ready for transfer away from this ship to port and then to the airport back to Sydney, where we’re told it has been freezing. I’m just finishing off the Captain Morgan Rum with a little Coca Cola.

Lucky us to have missed that cold weather, the intention of it all as it happens.

Jeffrey Lawrence Oreo: 53-year-old walking around Broome toilet block naked and high on meth finedKatya MinnsBroome Advertiser
Mon, 29 July 2024 11:11AM

A 53-year-old man walking around a Broome toilet block for hours while naked and high on methamphetamine was fined $1000 by a magistrate.
Jeffrey Lawrence Oreo, 53, appeared before Broome Magistrates Court on July 22 via video link charged with one count of obscene acts in public.
The court was told on May 9, Oreo — who was wearing only shoes and a hat — was caught on CCTV multiple times between 3.45pm and 6.30pm walking around a toilet block clutching his genitalia.
Speaking from custody unrepresented, Oreo admitted he was high on methamphetamine which “just affected (his) behaviour” and pleaded guilty to the charge.
Magistrate Deen Potter said the offending was aggravated by his criminal record and imposed a $1000 fine plus court costs.

De Russo and Tognini needed many…many words to condemn Vance over his comment to Carlson. It was quite funny to watch the huffing and puffing over what may well be a true observation.

Obviously not all childless women were targeted, just the bitter old crones who make other people’s lives miserable through busybodying and political influence. We know who they are.

Compare and contrast with the cultural willingness to brand all men as potential abusers. From both sides of the political divide.

Identifying some women as potential cat ladies has nothing on that.
