On current counting, the NT CLP’s primary vote is 49.3%, vs 29.1% for the communists – sorry Labor.

The self-flagellation, after the one given them by the punters will be intense.

I note Eva Lawless, outgoing Chief Minister and someone who’s lost her seat, walked onto the podium to give her concession speech and the first thing she did, before any concession speech, was to give an acknowledgment of the ‘indigenous owners’.

Ideological wank.

And now spot the difference.

I note Lia Finocchiao has walked onto the podium to give her acceptance speech, and unlike Lawless, hasn’t indulged in wank ideological nonsense and hasn’t acknowledged ‘indigenous owners’ instead Lia immediately talks about ALL ‘Territorians’.

From the Oz.

The Northern Territory government’s most high-profile challenge is crime but behind the scenes the deeper crisis is debt. Lia Finocchiaro is poised to inherit a wicked problem decades in the making. Her ability to address the crime and social dysfunction in Alice Springs and beyond is severely impaired by the fact the territory of 233,000 people is a financial basket case.
It is beyond a commonwealth bail out. The NT has a net debt 10.82bn. By contrast there is sheer panic in Tasmania over a $3.5bn debt on an island of $541,000 people. Keep in mind, Tasmania does not have the social problems that the NT has. Its residents are in relative good health. Tasmania has also got 12 senators advocating for its interests in the federal parliament, thanks to a requirement in the constitution that gives every state 12 senators regardless of population and size. The top end has just two senators. And the hard work facing Ms Finocchiaro is unique Australia-wide because 30.8 per cent of NT residents are Indigenous. The Australian’s health editor Natasha Robinson has shown us in eye-opening reports why this matters. Central Australia is a global diabetes capital. NT hospitals are overwhelmed with diabetes admissions and required amputations on younger and younger Indigenous people. In the northwest corner of the NT in Arnhem Land, men die – on average – aged 54. All manner of chronic and preventable illnesses hit the top end’s Indigenous residents at shocking rates.

Watched Sky news coverage tonight. Absolute crap, the TV was flipped to the ABC at times who actually had a tally.

Second and everyone here agreed WTF was forme Chief Minister Shane Stone doing trying to hog some of the limelight? I dislike Clennell immensely but he echoed my thoughts about the appearance Lia could be a puppet. This is a suspicion I had already, young lawyer preselected at 27 and went on to be leader at 39 with no more than 5-6 years in the private sector. I wish her well and to be proven wrong but I remain to be convinced she’s “nobody’s girl.”

Lastly before I turn in, dude that won Fong Lim. Tried standing for preselection in the ALP 5 months ago. WTF is wrong with the CLP? He could quite easily jump to the cross bench Monday and start voting with the ALP…

RD:

the appearance Lia could be a puppet

Having met Lia on several occasions over the journey in various capacities, I sincerely do not believe she is a puppet or a figurehead of faceless party men, or anything similar.

When the CLP got wiped about 12 years ago to the point where they had only two or three members in Parliament, she was there. She is still there.

Like a young Steve Waugh when Australian cricket was shit, Lia has – I think – learned from the tough times and also learned to put the foot on the throat when on top.

Plus, she swears like a trooper when cameras and mikes aren’t there.

I may be proven wrong, but am prepared to say she’ll do.

WHY ROMANS KEPT THEIR SWORDS ON THE RIGHT SIDE?

The Roman practice of carrying swords on the right side, while initially unconventional to us, was based on practical considerations of combat and equipment.

The Romans adopted this method from influences such as Iberian and Celtic practices, reflecting the integration of different military traditions into their own system. This shift became particularly notable with the adoption of the Gladius Hispaniensis around the 3rd century BC.

Here’s a deeper look into why the Romans carried their swords on the right:

1. **Practical Combat Considerations**: The primary advantage of carrying the sword on the right side was to prevent entanglement with the shield, which was worn on the left. By drawing the sword from the right, a Roman soldier could avoid the risk of the weapon getting caught between the shield and the body. This arrangement was particularly useful in the tight, close-quarters combat typical of Roman military engagements.

2. **Influence of Iberian and Celtic Traditions**: The Romans were influenced by the Iberians and Celts, who also carried their swords on the right. The Iberian Gladius Hispaniensis, which was a model for the Roman gladius, was often worn on the right. This cross-cultural exchange likely contributed to the adoption of the right-side carry in Roman military practice.

3. **Efficiency in Drawing the Sword**: Modern experiments have shown that drawing a sword from the right side can be as effective as from the left, especially with the Roman gladius, which was designed for quick, efficient use. This setup allowed for rapid access to the weapon, even if it required some adjustments in training and technique.

4. **Evolution of Equipment and Tactics**: Over time, the Roman military evolved, and so did their equipment. By the end of the 3rd century AD, the Roman army began to phase out the short gladius in favor of longer swords, such as the spatha.

The longer sword was often worn on the left side, in line with broader European military practices, which favored the left-side carry for convenience and consistency with changes in combat tactics and armor.

In summary, the Roman method of wearing swords on the right side was a tactical adaptation that suited their specific combat style and equipment needs. It allowed for effective use of the gladius in conjunction with the shield and was influenced by earlier military traditions.
However, as military technology and tactics evolved, so too did the conventions for carrying weapons.

A few notes from a quick eight day work cruise around the Mediterranean.

The highlight was Ephesus in Turkey. Some excellent Roman ruins including the Library of Celsus. Nothing to do with Celsius either. It was a lofty public building with apparently 12,000 scrolls in it, built around 110AD.

Celsus was a commander of the Roman army before being elected as a consul for the Roman Empire. He is buried in a crypt in the library floor.

The liner had about 2,400 passengers on board. I did talks on “How the Colosseum worked”; “Invading Gallipoli in World War I’; “The Battle for Crete in World War II”, and one on the enduring fascination of the Titanic. Unusual for a cruise liner this last I suppose, but the Activity Managers seem to like it – I have done it before on two other ships.

We also did a trip on a motor cruiser around the Santorini Volcano from the town of Fira, 150 kilometres north of Crete. It’s an enormous crater – well, a caldera – several kilometres across, with the walls of the crater now broken in by the sea in several places, creating a lot of islands. The interior of the crater is 500m deep – rather odd to sail the liner into such a place, although it has been dormant since 1950.

Got off the cruiser at a large island and walked about 2 k’s uphill to the top of what was basically lava. Lots of black crushed rock therefore. A reasonably hard walk given it was about 34 degrees. Mrs TE went swimming afterwards…I had enough of being in the Greek sun.

We are now winging it to Lisbon. The cruise company booked my ticket and when we went to get Mrs TE’s there were none left. So I am going Aer Lingus via Dublin, and she is flying Swedish to Copenhagen and then Portugal. So basically doing 2000 k’s to get to somewhere 1000 k’s away….

We are boarding another river cruise – non-work though – and will be navigating Portugese and Spanish waterways for 10 days.

It’s now official.

NASA to Keep 2 Astronauts in Space Until February, Nixes Return (24 Aug)

After almost three months, the decision finally came down from NASA’s highest ranks on Saturday. Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams will come back in a SpaceX spacecraft in February. Their empty Starliner capsule will undock in a week or two and attempt to return on autopilot. …

So Wilmore and Williams will wait for SpaceX’s next taxi flight. It’s due to launch in late September with two astronauts instead of the usual four for a routine six-month stay. NASA yanked two to make room for Wilmore and Williams on the return flight in late February.

Boeing certainly hasn’t been having a good run lately. Maybe Elon should sling at them a bid for the company, since SpaceX can build stuff that works.

American Peronism: Kamala’s Plan to Ruin America’s Economy

Daniel Lacalle, Mises Institute, 24 August 2024

Price controls, higher taxes, government intervention, and subsidies paid for by printing a constantly devalued currency.

These are the essential pillars of “21st century socialism” and the radical left Peronism that obliterated Argentina. These are also the main elements of the economic plan presented by Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party. Undoubtedly, this is the most radical socialist economic plan ever announced by the Democrats.

According to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB), Harris’s proposals will cost $1.95 trillion over 10 years. However, it emphasizes that if certain measures become permanent, this figure could increase to $2.25 trillion.

The Harris campaign has stated that these costs will be offset by a classic excuse of socialism in any election: “higher taxes on corporations and high earners.” This is, obviously, ludicrous, because there is no revenue measure that will cover the already bloated $2 trillion annual deficit and an added $2 trillion. The mantra of “higher taxes for the rich” always means higher taxes and more inflation, a hidden tax, for you.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has already warned of the fiscal disaster of the United States, with an annual deficit of 6% of GDP. Despite not accounting for a recession and projecting record tax revenues from 2024 to 2034, the CBO predicts an explosion in the budget deficit from $1.9 trillion to $2.8 trillion by 2034, even before factoring in Harris’s new spending plan. This means that the adjusted deficit will rise above 6.9 percent of GDP by 2034, almost twice the average of 3.7 percent over the previous 50 years.

Following the Harris plan, the United States public debt will likely increase by $24 trillion in a decade. As I have explained, there is no set of revenue measures that can bring $2 trillion per year in additional tax receipts, and tax hikes will harm both investment and growth.

An economy that generates an annual deficit of 6 percent of GDP to achieve a mere 2 percent annual growth is already on a dangerous path, and Harris’ plan would make it even worse.

Kamala Harris promises to cut inflation by spending and printing more money, reducing competition, and attacking businesses. It has never worked and never will because it is upside-down economics. Welcome to the U.S. “Peronism.”.

Imagine all those United States citizens who have escaped Latin American or European economies impoverished by interventionism to find a better opportunity in the United States only to find that the same policies will be implemented by Harris.

The narrative of price gouging and greedflation is simply false. In 2023, profit margins in the grocery industry hit the lowest level since 2019, at 1.6%, according to the IMF. Corporations, even if they were stupid and reckless, cannot make all prices rise constantly. Competition would eat away at their market share; newcomers would eliminate them, and aggregate prices would fall. Furthermore, stores and businesses cannot make aggregate prices soar, maintain the increase, and consolidate it, which is the measure of inflation (CPI) we read every month. The only thing that can make all prices rise and continue increasing at a slower pace is printing money and eroding the purchasing power of the currency.

The only thing that can make aggregate prices rise constantly is the destruction of the purchasing power of the currency, which comes from massive government spending and printing currency to disguise fiscal imbalances.

Kamala Harris and her team know that their spending plan will make the national debt soar and that price controls do not reduce prices. In fact, these should not be called “price controls” but “limits to competition.” If corporations were the cause of inflation and price controls were the solution, Peronist Argentina would have enjoyed the lowest inflation in the world in the past decades.

Harris’ proposals to forgive debt are profoundly anti-social. They do not forgive any debt; they just add it to the national debt and make you pay for it. This enormous increase in public debt will be a burden for every American, particularly the poorest, with persistent inflation and lower real wages. US citizens have already endured negative real wage growth since January 2021, when Biden took office, according to the Federal reserve of St Louis. Expect worse.

Why does Harris promote the same policies that have failed everywhere? Promising free stuff and blaming others for the negative consequences is the defining strategy of socialist politicians.

Are you surprised to see how Germany, France, and other historically rich nations slump into stagnation, high debt, persistent inflation, enormous taxes, and the destruction of the middle class? Those policies are what Harris is promising. Who benefits? The vast government and its surrounding corporations reap the benefits.

Many people hold the belief that a nation cannot be considered socialist if it contains private companies. It makes no sense. State control does not limit itself to capital ownership but also to the imposition of increasingly restrictive laws, regulations, and confiscatory taxes. In fact, the government likes to absorb most of the wealth created by the private sector without the inconvenience of managing the businesses. Huerta de Soto defines socialism as “any system of institutional, methodical aggression against the free exercise of entrepreneurship” and that is precisely what Harris promises.

Higher taxes and more debt.

The government will print money to provide subsidies in a currency that is constantly losing value. It will blame stores and businesses for inflation. Interventionist policies will continue to erode the private sector. And they will repeat.

The makers of these policies are aware that they will negatively impact the economy, yet they will also engender a substantial number of enslaved citizens who rely on the government and must abide by its decisions. Voters see an alleged tsunami of free money but ignore the fact that they will pay for it through higher inflation, lower real wages, and diminishing opportunities for small businesses and families.

The Harris team believes deficits do not matter and that the Federal Reserve can always disguise any budget imbalance. However, cracks have already appeared. Persistent inflation is the consequence of years of excessive spending and monetization. The next step is the risk of losing the U.S. dollar as the world reserve currency when the world stops accepting the ever-increasing debt.

Kamala Harris’s brother-in-law, Tony West, has been accused of manipulating taxpayer funds to funnel billions of dollars to left-wing groups and trial lawyers during his time in the Obama administration. West, who is married to Kamala’s sister, was involved in the 2014 mortgage settlement, where he allegedly redirected a significant portion of the funds to Democratic allies instead of compensating victims.

An interesting assessment of the Bayesian disaster:

Bayesian Disaster Emblematic of Our Era Reflections on the shipbuilder’s statement. JOHN LEAKE
AUG 24

When I first heard reports that the Bayesian superyacht had sunk at anchor outside a marina in Sicily, I was incredulous that such a huge and technically yacht could sink at anchor, even in the most fearsome tempest.
However, after carefully studying (and sleeping on) the statement of the shipbuilder, I have am increasingly drawn to the conclusion that the conduct of the skipper and crew are beyond rational comprehension.

  • With heavy thunderstorms in the forecast, it is indisputably true that someone should have been keeping the watch on the bridge. This is standard procedure when bad weather is in the forecast.
  • The second thing that really jumped out at me is that portholes and hatches—and apparently the stern door to the main salon!—were purportedly left open.
  • Finally, I was stunned to see the confirmed report that the Bayesian lost its anchor hold and dragged for 4 minutes before it sank.
  • During this time, it appears that the vessel began violently yawing at the same time it was dragging the anchor, with the bow possibly running afoul of the anchor chain.

Here it seems worth mentioning that I have experience sailing off the coast of Sicily and I am familiar with the wild weather that can strike in the early morning hours. In the summer of 2001, I chartered a 50-foot sailing yacht near Tropea, Calabria and sailed west to the Aeolian Islands. After an uneventful night anchored off Stromboli, I sailed to Lipari.
Because the docks in the marina were fully occupied, I anchored just outside the marina. The relatively deep water and rocky bottom made me nervous about the anchor holding, so it I didn’t sleep well. The next morning, just before sunrise, the anchorage was struck by a gale that caused the anchor to lose its hold, and within minutes the vessel had drifted into 200+ deep water, with virtually all the anchor chain dangling straight down off the bow, exerting far too much weight for the boat’s mickey-mouse windlass to lift.

The FIRST thing I did was double check to make sure ALL portholes and hatches were closed. I then quickly started the inboard and did my best to hold the bow directly into the wind, which drove heavy rain straight into my face at over 50 miles per hour with what I took to be 60+ gusts.
I wasn’t alone. Other sailing yachts had also lost their anchor hold and were drifting. In fact, the only yachts in the anchorage that did NOT lose their anchor hold were a few super yachts with massive anchors and tons of chain. A few skippers of the other drifting boats had not yet awakened and started their inboards, and some of these boats were drifting into the anchored super yachts, which created a hell of a ruckus.
With the help of a friend onboard, I was able to slowly winch up the anchor chain using dock lines and the jib winch. It was a slow and painstaking process, especially in the driving rain, but at last we got the anchor up around the same time the gale blew over.

I mention this nautical adventure to emphasize that my actions were a matter of basic seamanship. As the boat’s skipper, I was merely following standard procedure. Had I been a really good skipper, I would have:

1). Looked at the weather report right before I went to bed.
2). Set two anchors off the bow instead of only one.
3). Set an alarm to wake me in at the time bad weather was forecast to approach.

Eyewitness accounts of the Bayesian’s sinking are now being reported in the press. I found the following, just published in the Guardian, to be of special interest.

Located approximately 150 metres (492ft) away from the Bayesian was the Sir Robert Baden, a Dutch-flagged sailing ship built in 1957, and captained by the experienced sailor Karsten Borner, 69.

“We were awakened by the storm,” Karsten told the Guardian. “The first thing I did was to start the engines of my sailboat to give more stability to the vessel. After securing our boat, we immediately approached the Bayesian.’’

A photo obtained by the Guardian from a local fisher showed the moment a red emergency flare was launched from the Bayesian’s life raft at 4.35am.

Francesco Lo Coco, who took the image, said: “I saw the sailboat rocking. The emergency rocket was launched while the sailboat was already sinking.”

Borner was the first to attempt providing assistance to the Bayesian, but the boat was already going under.

“I have never seen a vessel of this size go down so quickly,” said Borner. “Within a few minutes, there was nothing left. Then we saw the raft with the 15 passengers. It was a tragedy.”

From a video taken by surveillance cameras at a shipyard, it seems the passengers of the Bayesian had about 16 minutes to save themselves and avoid the sinking.

In light of my elementary knowledge and experience, it is hard for me to understand why the skipper of the Bayesian didn’t—at the very latest—start the inboard and get ready for action soon after the leading edge of the storm started to lash the vessel with the first gusts. A glance at the weather radar would have revealed to him the approaching squall line with dense thunderstorm cells.

Was he afraid the sound of the diesel inboard would wake the sleeping guests who’d enjoyed a party the evening before? Were he and his crew also sleeping when the squall line approached?

In the final analysis, I suppose the investigation will focus on the question: Were there indeed hatches and even salon doors left open even afterthe leading edge of the storm struck? If this is confirmed to be the case, it will strongly raise the suspicion of gross negligence if not foul play.
Whatever the investigators discover, I feel confident in stating now that the Bayesian Disaster is—like the SARS-CoV-2 Lab Leak, the COVID-19 Vaccine Debacle, the Nord Stream Pipeline Disaster, the Lahaina Fire, the Baltimore Bridge Disaster, the Trump Assassination Attempt—emblematic of our mind-bogglingly confounding era

Indeed, much of era reminds me of Roman propaganda against the Emperor Nero, whom propagandists claimed was a bizarre combination of wealth, power, insanity, and incompetence. While I suspect that much of the lore about Nero was probably exaggerated and even fabricated, the portrait of the Emperor that had come down to us over the ages strikes me as providing an apt description of whatever Great Lords are running our world today.

Be interesting if Farage starts picking up Labour voters.

Nearly Six in Ten Labour Voters Back Cutting Migration, Quarter Willing to Vote for Farage’s Reform UK (24 Aug)

The poll also found that around one in four Labour Party voters would consider defecting and voting for Brexit leader Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.

While the Farage-led party holds many traditionally conservative policy positions, Reform UK has made its mission to target voters in working-class Labour Party strongholds, many of whom voted for Brexit over a desire to reduce immigration.

Which supports my suspicion – that the Southport rioters were more probably Labour voters rather than Tories. Like Labor here there’s an increasing rift between old style industrial Labour and the nutty progressives that control the party.

A synagogue attacked in Montpelier in Southern France

President Emmanuel Macron vows to find “terrorist” responsible for the flames that broke out outside Beth Yaacov synagogue in France on Saturday morning after a car exploded in front of the building, according to French officials.

Police were hunting for a suspect and the anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office was put in charge of the investigation, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said.

“This is an antisemitic attack. Once more, our Jewish compatriots are targeted,” Attal posted on X, adding: “We won’t give up. In the face of anti-Semitism, in the face of violence, we will never allow ourselves to be intimidated.”

Well, at least the French don’t mince words and they call a spade a spade. Perhaps the grub from Grayndler could learn a thing or two. Here in NSW our police would provide the terrorists responsible with an escort, soshul coheshun and all that!

I make no apologies for the fact that I now have zero respect for the police in this country, ZERO.

At least the news last night out of the NT as good. It was an electoral smashing.

that the Southport rioters were more probably Labour voters rather than Tories.

I made that comment a few days ago.

In the UK, there is a tradition of Tory working class voters….in the south. That phenomenon does not exist in the north, and if there was any traditional support, the miner’s strike in 1984/1985 under Thatcher destroyed any working class support for the Conservatives.

In an interview last week, eminent historian David Starkey predicted that the white indigenous working class will now abandon UK Labour once and for all.

Northern Territory elections: Lia Finocchiaro and the Country Liberals inherit a wicked problem after defeating Labor
Updated 2 hours ago
251 comments
The Northern Territory government’s most high-profile challenge is crime but behind the scenes the deeper crisis is debt. Lia Finocchiaro is poised to inherit a wicked problem decades in the making. Her ability to address the crime and social dysfunction in Alice Springs and beyond is severely impaired by the fact the territory of 233,000 people is a financial basket case.

Greens on track to nab seat in NT election
Liam Mendes
The Greens are leading the primary vote for the seat of Fannie Bay, setting them on course to nab a seat in the Territory election in what was previously a very safe Territory Labor seat.

It would make Suki Dorras-Walker the first-ever Greens MLA elected in the Territory, and the first time Labor has lost the seat in almost 30 years.

Police Minister Brent Potter had won the seat in the 2022 by-election following then-chief minister Michael Gunner‘s resignation.

Speaking to The Australian on Saturday afternoon in the hour prior to polls closing, Ms Dorras-Walker said she would be introducing “smart and different solutions” to crime.

“What we’re hearing from people is they want to see smart solutions to crime, they know that they have seen over time that prisons are ineffective, they’ve seen our prison population grow by 30 per cent over the last decade, and people are feeling more unsafe than ever,” Ms Dorras-Walker said.

“What they want to see is the core reasons as to why crime is happening in the first place addressed and so if we look at the fact that we have the highest rates of domestic violence in the country, we have the highest rates of homelessness in the country, if we are not addressing those two facts, then we are tinkering at the edges.

The primary school teacher, mother and law student said there weren’t enough youth services on the street, that she wants to build public housing, as well as “fully fund” the domestic violence sector.

“I’m just so incredibly proud that we’ve been able to provide an alternative to the two major parties this election that’s actually with some vision for community safety, some vision for our community in the future,” she said.

“It’ll come down to a few hundred votes in Fanny Bay, because the Greens are very close to getting our first seat in parliament, and we’re really excited that we have proposed yet another alternative for the community this election.”

Indeed, perhaps we should ask government lackey Mike Burgess for his opinion. Burgess the Lackey seems to enjoy a bit of media attention, he’s now the ‘go to boy’ or that should be the ‘go to lackey’. Question to Burgess the Lackey, does he think Owens’ rhetoric is more harmful than a Jew hating homicidal Gazan’s rhetoric? Surely both are letting off noxious anti-Semitic steam, Mr Burgess? Or is some steam worse than other’s steam? Why the selectivity, Burgess?

Me personally? I don’t like either steam but I like and expect consistency from my federal government.

‘Running Hot Project’: e-scooter firm accused of audacious scam (Paywallian)

Global e-vehicle company, Beam Mobility, has allegedly been putting “phantom” scooters on the streets of cities across Australia and New Zealand to cheat governments out of millions of dollars in fees and subvert safety limits.

Usually a few Beam bikes and scooters around my suburb, although there are fewer than initially. I’ve only seen one in actual use in the last couple of years.

As for the story I’m wondering if the “phantom” scooters are actually real scooters that just happen to be at the bottom of the Yarra. I put up a story last week about such aquatic e-scooters.

Multiple people injured in Sydney stabbingLiam Mendes
22 minutes ago.
Updated 3 minutes ago

A major police operation is underway in Engadine following reports to emergency services that a police officer and multiple civilians have “multiple stab wounds” and lacerations.
It is understood five people are being treated by paramedics, with one person in cardiac arrest and a police officer injured with lacerations.
Initial reports to Ambulance NSW stated there was one patient “with multiple stab wounds”.
It is understood an alleged offender is also being treated by paramedics after the incident on Old Bush Rd.
Another patient has a stab wound to their abdomen, and another with a broken arm.
The first critical patient has been transported from the scene and is a 40-year-old woman who is being taken to St George Hospital for multiple stab wounds.

If you want an insight into just how ignorant and idiotic Owens is, in a podcast she claimed Stalin was Jewish!

Stalin was born to Georgian Orthodox parents, he was baptised into the Georgian Orthodox church, he had zero Jewish ancestry, and he entered, for a short time, an Orthodox seminary.

Having said that, I regard Owens’ noxious ravings as a lot less threatening to my safety than 3000 Gazan homicidal genocidal Hitlerites landing on these shores. Owens is a monumental idiot, propelled way above her lowly pay grade, and she is easy to debate and debunk.

California fire destroys baseball stadium featured in ‘A League of Their Own’ (23 Aug)

The Jay Littleton Ballpark, in Ontario, California, went up in flames about 11:30 p.m. and is a “a total loss,” city spokesperson Dan Bell said. The cause of the fire is not known, but investigators are on scene, he said Friday, adding that the stadium’s grandstand was wooden and likely burned very quickly.

It’s a nice little movie, with Geena Davis and Madonna. Based on WW2 history too.

JC, I posted the article in part as evidence that sanctions had failed to dent the Russian economy at all, and more broadly, that they are generally ineffective at changing the relevant policy that was the reason for their enactment. Since you won’t admit to the abject failure of sanctions, you want to talk about military Keynesianism.

You keep bringing up these sanctions like it was the only and major part of the economy. While they didn’t succeed in bringing Russia to its knees, it has caused difficulties. However, I’m not talking sanctions with you, even though you deliberately try to divert any discussions to this blessed topic of yours.

On that score, the difference between a car and a tank, to use your example above, depends. If a car actually contributes to productivity it is economically useful, but if its simply a status symbol, or one of many that are irregularly used, how is it more productive than a tank?

That’s some interesting economic analysis you have going on. Re-direct 20% of the national economy towards an invasion, and you begin talking about Mercedes-Benz cars and Bentely’s.

And tanks are productive, not in an economic sense, though they are if they generate export sales, but they are useful if they defend a nation’s interests.

Interesting, a tank to be used invading Ukraine and blown up shortly after raises living standards over the medium term. Let’s invade New Zealand and become seriously rich doing so. War causes prosperity.

You’re continually posting propaganda how prosperous Russia has become with the invasion. Perhaps, you could also focus your attention, just one time, on the terrible damage this has done to Ukraine. But because you see Ukraine as your enemy due to this Russia attachment you have, you’re won’t.

Telegram messaging app CEO Durov arrested in France

“Durov was travelling aboard his private jet, TF1 said on its website, adding he had been targeted by an arrest warrant in France as part of a preliminary police investigation. TF1 and BFM both said the investigation was focused on a lack of moderators on Telegram, and that police considered that this situation allowed criminal activity to go on undeterred on the messaging app.”

When the EU says you don’t have enough censors on your highly encrypted messaging app you might want to ask how they know that.

Who is Pavel Durov?

Pavel Durov, the founder and owner of Telegram, is a significant figure in the tech world. As of August 24, 2024, his net worth is estimated at $15.5 billion, placing him among the world’s wealthiest individuals, ranked #120.

Durov’s notable achievements began with the creation of VKontakte (VK), Russia’s largest social network, which he co-founded with his brother Nikolai in 2006. VK quickly became a dominant platform in Russia, similar to Facebook. #Durov’s tenure at VK was marked by disputes with Russian authorities over data privacy and content control. In 2014, facing mounting pressure, he was compelled to sell his stake and leave the company.

In 2013, Durov launched Telegram, a cloud-based messaging app renowned for its emphasis on privacy and security. With over 700 million monthly active users, Telegram has become a significant player in the messaging app market, competing with platforms like WhatsApp. The app has gained prominence in various global conflicts, including the ongoing Ukraine war, where it has been a crucial source of information and, at times, disinformation.

Durov relocated to Dubai in 2017 to escape Russian pressures and continue his work with Telegram. In 2021, he obtained French citizenship, a move that has become a central aspect of his current legal status.

Today, #Durov has been arrested in Paris on August 24, 2024, as he disembarked from his private jet at Le Bourget Airport. The arrest was conducted based on a search warrant related to allegations of money laundering, illegal drug trafficking, and the distribution of content linked to child abuse on Telegram. The arrest has raised significant concerns about his future and the potential repercussions for his company.

Despite these challenges, Durov remains a pivotal figure in the technology sector, known for his commitment to digital privacy and innovation. He is also a father of five and balances his high-profile career with family life. His recent legal troubles highlight the complexities of navigating global business and personal security in the digital age.

Still nothing that Labor may do compares to Scummo’s outrageous operation to repatriate arrogant wealthy medicos from their Antartic tax dodge cruise while refusing repatriation rights to tens of thousands of Aussies who were reduced to penury as a consequence of having to sustain themselves overseas for years.

No matter what evil is visited upon that man, it is insufficient.

Looking at NT election results and the turnout which was 55% of eligible voters. Is voting compulsory up there? Also can anyone shed some light on what went on in Arafura electorate. It had the lowest turnout at 36% but of the formal votes, the ALP got 71% which seems odd given other trends. Perhaps you got a free beer and a ride to the polling booth if you voted Labor. Or maybe the CLP candidate was a dud? Love to know. https://ntec.nt.gov.au/elections/current-elections/2024-territory-election/results/nt-summary-of-first-preference-votes-by-division

In Navan.
I’m staying in a 1930s end of row house.
The owner is a widow on a pension who’s put her two spare bedrooms and backyard bungalow to good use.
The money she makes goes to home renovations/repairs she otherwise couldn’t afford and she reckons she might quit when it’s all done.
She says the income taxes are ruinous and it’s property taxes that encourage people to leave houses vacant.
She got robbed in an aggravated burglary two weeks ago, just two televisions taken, though they could have taken her handbag and car keys and her car, obviously.
She heard them but assumed it was guests who’d gone downstairs for a snack.
Odd to only take TVs, sounds more like a burglary you would do in 1980.
Only houses on this side of the street, opposite is waste land adjoining the banks of the River Boyne.
I saw three vagrants sitting in the long grass when I went for a walk so I did wonder.
I’m going to day trip to the towns of Trim and Kells.
Had a walk around Navan yesterday evening and attended the vigil mass, Portuguese priest and a sideways interior, and like many Irish churches the Communion rail was never removed.
Very well attended. Two saint Marys a couple of hundred metres apart the Church of Ireland one only offers a single Sunday service against four masses.
Despite the best efforts of various English kings and Lord Protectors and secularism Catholicism isn’t dead in Ireland.
Noticed a grave in the church, linky below there is also a St Oliver Plunkett’s church in Navan, not sure if the bishop is related.

Russian economy doing splendidly reverting back to Soviet economics.

Who needs a new car when you can buy a couple of tanks and artillery

President Vladimir Putin and his authoritarian regime are peddling the false narrative that the Russian economy is strong, and that its war machine is unharmed by western sanctions. This is a lie that must be rebutted. In fact, there are many signs that the Russian war economy is deteriorating. The sanctions and other measures to weaken the Russian economy are effective, but even more can be done. We must continue to increase pressure on Putin’s regime and support Ukraine.

During the Nato summit in Washington DC, western leaders reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine’s defence. But Russia’s war against Ukraine is not only being fought by soldiers on the ground. It is also a war of information, on which the Kremlin spends an estimated $1.5bn (£1.2bn) a year, and of economic strength. Putin and his authoritarian regime want us to believe that Russia stands unmoved by sanctions and other efforts made to support Ukraine, freedom and democracy. Thus, it is extremely important that politicians, the media and economic institutions in the west do not take the information coming out of the Kremlin at face value. When taking a closer look at the signals, it becomes clear that everything is not as rosy with the Russian economy as Moscow would have us believe.

While Russian GDP may be growing, the economy is increasingly geared towards the war industry, upheld by large fiscal stimulus. This is not an endless source of growth, nor a sign of a stable economy. The Kremlin’s war factories are already at maximum capacity. Unemployment has fallen to the point that there are reports that Vladimir Putin approved the replacement of imprisonment for forced labour. The tight labour market has put upward pressure on wages, while the weaker ruble increases import prices and is contributing to increasingly high inflation, despite Russian central bank efforts to fight it with high interest rates.

To finance the war, the Russian government has tapped into the liquid assets of Russia’s national wealth fund. Estimates by Bloomberg suggest it has almost halved in size since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, as the country sacrifices its future prosperity to wreak havoc abroad. Moscow has also resorted to several extreme interventions to control the Russian economy. Export bans for petrol and sugar have been introduced to secure domestic supply. Strict capital controls have been put in place to prevent the exodus of private funds from the country and keep the ruble from freefalling. Even so, there are still reports of billions of US dollars being transferred out of the country.

For many Russians, the wartime economic policy of the Kremlin must bring about a sense of deja vu. Capital controls, export bans and heavy investments in the war industry are not new policies, but rather a return to the Soviet playbook.

What could be perceived and mistaken as a “boost” to Russian growth is, in fact, the beginning of a re-Sovietisation of the economy.

Many of the hallmarks are there: far-reaching market controls, heavy public spending financed by expropriation of private assets, and a reorientation of the economy towards the war industry, with a total disregard for the social and economic wellbeing of the population. History clearly shows that this is not a successful long-term strategy. The short-term overheating of the economy, fuelled by heavy investments in the war industry and very limited access to technology, will likely hinder productivity gains and result in stagnation of the private sector, even more rampant inflation and increasing pressure on Russian households.

To cover future deficits, Putin will have to use monetary financing, adding more fuel to inflation, and further deplete the Russian cash reserves. If Putin stays on this path, the long-term damage to the Russian economy could be significant and is likely to further erode confidence. However, this also requires patience and resolve from the west. We must maintain and increase pressure, while continuing and strengthening our support to Ukraine. Russian propaganda must not be left unchallenged.

Unlike the story Russia would like to tell, sanctions targeting the Russian war machine are effective and necessary. They have reshaped the geography of Russia’s foreign trade and limited its access to high-priority battlefield items. Between 2022 and 2023, Russian export revenues had decreased by around a third, based on information from the Russian customs service.

I like Frangelico though my favourites are Amaretto and Sambuca. I adore licorice.

Speaking of Sambuca, remember how it used to be served with some coffee beans and then set alight with a match? I remember decades ago going to a long lunch, a time when everyone went on long boozy lunches and everyone got roaring drunk. Everyone at this lunch got smashed and then out came the sambucas with coffee beans. I can still remember sitting at the table and a man I know got up to give a speech, the waitress came out with the sambucas, and the man, very drunk, picked up his glass of burning sambuca, went to take a swig, it missed his mouth and instead his glass of burning sambucas landed on his shoulder and his jacket was set alight. We all laughed Luckily there was water on the table!

Those were the days, halcyon days.

President Vladimir Putin and his authoritarian regime…

From the Guardian. I thought the ‘resovietisation’ theme a nice touch.

There we go without a shred of backup. Nice touch.

If you have any counterarguments to those facts presented, then show us, or otherwise we can go with the pic of good looking Russian gals sitting around, pretending some obscure Russian/Soviet propaganda site is revealing about the state of the Russian economy. But then, for someone who thinks an economy dedicated to a war effort, cut off from an economic zone that contributes 45% of global GDP, is doing well, this person would be brainwashed to believe anything.
Hey, look, there’s a bunch of Russian girls enjoying an afternoon coffee. Everything’s fine.

The ironic thing is that people showing Putin-love appear to also have the hots for Trump, believing Trump will quickly end the war. He might, or is very likely to, end it. However, that leaves one thing out. After the end of this war, Mr. 87% (Putin) has to contend with an economy focused on the war effort and moving back towards a peace-based economy.

Trump’s big policy is “drill baby drill”, which could very well mean oil&gas prices take a big tumble. There’s also Argentina eyeing off exploiting its very large petroleum reserves, which I believe are tar sands.

This isn’t going to be a walk in the park for Russia.

If I were a Putin lover, I’d be going for Harris.

A war-economy refocused toward peace combined with falling fossil fuel prices is not going to be a walk down the beach on a gorgeous day.
There’s also a likelihood, Russian sanctions remain for a long time, even with Trump.

Senator Rennick resigned from LNP to form his own party called People First.

Below is from the Courier Mail. Story at the Oz already has over 200 comments but Courier article no comments allowed so far. Courier Mail has never given him a fair run, particularly in relation to Covid issues.

He will be fighting for the 6th Senate slot and hopefully beats the LNP candidate who was chosen to replace him.

“Renegade Queensland Senator Gerard Rennick has resigned from the Liberal National Party after he was dumped from preselection in an internal ballot.
Senator Rennick lost his position on the LNP’s senate ticket at the party’s state conference to party treasurer Stuart Fraser in Brisbane last July.
On Sunday, the 53-year-old quit the party to run as an independent in the next federal election, The Australian reported.
He will reportedly seek Australian Electoral Commission approval to establish the Gerard Rennick People First party.
The move comes after a Supreme Court judge rejected a case seeking to force the party to allow an appeal of the preselection process in June”.

The inflation and interest rate figures I saw were from the Central Bank of Russia. If we all have is conjecture why are you so vigorously arguing your case?

We survived higher interest rates under Keating, in peacetime.
Why do you think the Russians won’t?

I am pushing no barrows here, but others seem to be pro or against for no valid reason other than personal for some, or just because being contrary.

Both China and Russia in one or other political form have been around for a long time.
To a shorter time so is the US, if I were to bet on a major upheaval or even disintegration I’d tip the US as the most likely candidate.
