Watt announces new voice to tackle issues plaguing farming

Agriculture Minister Murray Watt has announced a tripartite working group to bring together unions, peak agricultural groups and government to work through issues plaguing farming.

The group will meet every month to thrash out key issues including skills shortages, pay standards and working conditions. Announcing the new group, Mr Watt said it was rare to get unions and agricultural entities working together after years of disagreement.

The deal came as tensions emerged between the National Farmers Federation and Nationals leader David Littleproud after he accused the peak agricultural organisation of acting like “cowards … as soon as this government was elected”.

Mr Littleproud has been pushing the government to reintroduce an agriculture-specific visa to alleviate labour problems on farms. The Coalition government introduced its agriculture visa after years of lobbying by the NFF, but Labor abolished the visa when it took office.

NFF president Fiona Simson said the comments were “very disappointing” and accused the ­Nationals leader of “deliberately distorting the facts”.

She called on Mr Littleproud to be “more collaborative”.

“He is either seriously misinformed and not across his brief about our submission and our 40 recommendations or else he’s perhaps deliberately distorting the facts to get a bit of media ­attention and clickbait,” Ms Simson said.

Alex Turnbull’s multimillion-­dollar legal action against fund manager Russel Pillemer has been thrown out of a NSW court, with a judge making damaging findings against the former prime minister’s son, including that he told lies and gave false evidence.

In a judgment handed down on Friday, Supreme Court judge Kate Williams found Mr Turnbull “lied” about messages sent to Mr Pillemer, rejected large segments of Mr Turnbull’s evidence, and called out inconsistencies with his recollection and other shortfalls with his accounts as he pursued at least $12m in losses.

Mr Pillemer, the chief executive of fund manager Pengana Capital, had been sued by Mr Turnbull for engaging in “misleading and deceptive conduct” over the firm’s reverse merger with another investment house, Hunter Hall, in 2017.

Mr Turnbull, the son of former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, held a stake in Pengana through his company, Maurtray, and claimed he had been induced to sell his shares to Mr Pillemer for $6.1m, an amount lower than what they would have been worth if he had kept them.

In a case predicated on distant conversations, claims, counterclaims and foggy recollections, the issue of witness credibility remained central to the outcome of the matter, especially when wildly differing accounts of conversations were provided to the court.

But in a searing set of findings, Justice Williams appeared to sharply criticise Mr Turnbull’s evidence far more than that of Mr Pillemer, agreeing with submissions that he was “unreliable in several respects” and provided evidence that reflected “very poorly on (his) credit”.

In her judgment, Justice Williams said Mr Turnbull’s move to blame his lawyers for a drafting error in his affidavit demonstrated “an unwillingness to acknowledge the objective truth”.

Mr Turnbull has 28 days to lodge an appeal against the judgment. He declined to comment when contacted, but Mr Pillemer told The Weekend Australian: “I am very happy with the result. The judgment speaks for itself.”

While Mr Turnbull’s father gave evidence during the hearings last year, the case itself was largely devoid of his involvement in Pengana, save for the contextual background that led to his son’s dispute with Mr Pillemer
