Woman who supplied Alec Baldwin gun was a film novice
The young woman was on her second job overseeing the weapons on a film set when she placed three prop firearms on a cart outside a bare wooden church, where Alec Baldwin was to rehearse a gunfight.
Hannah Reed had apprenticed under her father, a quick draw specialist and a renowned figure in Hollywood, and she served for the first time as head armourer last month in Montana on the set of a western starring Nicolas Cage.
“I was really nervous at first and I almost didn’t take the job because I wasn’t sure if I was ready, but doing it, it went really smoothly,” she said on a podcast last month. “It was a really badass way to start a really long and cool career, I’m hoping.”
Reed is at the centre of the investigation into a fatal accident that has stunned Hollywood. On Thursday a gun Baldwin was holding on the set of the film Rust discharged and killed a cinematographer. Court documents identified Reed, 24, as the person who put the weapon on a cart outside the church.
A detective, Joel Cano, wrote in an affidavit filed with a local magistrate’s court that Dave Halls, the film’s assistant director, grabbed the gun from the cart and brought it into the church. “Cold gun!” he shouted, handing it to Baldwin.
It was day 12 of a planned three-week shoot at Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico, which boasts an old western town built in the 1980s, framed by cottonwoods and dusty mountains. Inside the church Halyna Hutchins, an admired cinematographer, was leaning over the shoulder of a camera operator to examine the monitor while Joel Souza, the film’s director, crouched behind her, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Once they had lined up the shot, they could retreat to another area of the set and view it remotely. But they were still rehearsing. The shout of “cold gun” was supposed to indicate that the weapon Baldwin was wielding contained no live ammunition. Neither Halls nor the actor knew that it was loaded. Baldwin drew the weapon from his holster once without incident but the second time something shot from the gun, missing the camera operator but striking Hutchins and then hitting Souza. Hutchins, 42, a mother of one, died.
The detective’s affidavit requested a warrant to search the church, and raised the prospect that the incident might have been filmed. Cano sought to “confirm if the incident that took place was or wasn’t recorded”. He wished to examine any cameras, film or digital memory cards. Baldwin had been wearing “Old Western style” clothes and they were wanted too. The costume “appeared to have bloodstains”, Cano added. A magistrate quickly granted the request.
Cano identified the film’s armourer as Hannah Gutierrez, using Reed’s mother’s name, under which she worked briefly as a model. She is the daughter of Thell Reed, who made his name in shooting contests and became a stuntman, adviser to film stars and armourer on sets.
Appearing last month on the podcast Voices of the West, Hannah Reed recalled being pulled out of school at the age of 11 to join her father on the set of the Russell Crowe film 3.10 to Yuma. She recalled “running around with a plastic gun, going like, ‘Give me your pistachios’, you know?” she said. “That one time that I went out to set when I was younger just made me think: ‘I want to do movies when I’m older.’”
She considered acting or camera work and served briefly as a production assistant on the Quentin Tarantino film Once Upon A Time … In Hollywood, where “my job was just to fight crackheads to keep them out of the shot”, before deciding on a career as an armourer and apprentice under her father. “I tried it with Dad one time and I noticed I had a real natural knack for it, growing up with guns my whole life,” she said. “He took me from being completely green and taught me everything I know so far.” She added: “I think loading blanks was the scariest thing to me, because I was like: ‘Oh, I don’t know anything about it.’ But he taught me that.”
Reed took the spent casing out of the gun after the accident, according to the affidavit. Police secured the weapon, the cart from which it had been taken, a belt and some additional ammunition.
The shoot appears to have been beset by problems before the accident on Thursday afternoon. A weapon had misfired a few days earlier, according to the online news site Deadline. “A gun had two misfires in a closed cabin,” the source said. “They just fired loud pops – a person was just holding it in their hands and it went off.”
Hours before Hutchins was killed, seven crew members had walked off the set in protest over the conditions. Until last week their union had been threatening a strike, amid industry-wide complaints from film crews at the long shifts and the expectation that while actors were put up locally, crew members would frequently face a long drive afterwards and the danger of falling asleep at the wheel. On the Rust set, the film crew had expected accommodation in nearby Santa Fe but found themselves driving to Albuquerque, 50 miles to the south.
“We cited everything from lack of payment for three weeks, taking our hotels away despite asking for them in our deals, lack of Covid safety, and on top of that, poor gun safety! Poor on-set safety period!” a crew member wrote on a private Facebook page, according to Deadline. When they downed tools, producers “brought in four non-union guys to replace us and tried calling the cops on us”.
“Corners were being cut,” a crew member told the Los Angeles Times.
Rust Movie Productions LLC has said it will conduct a review of its procedures and “offer mental health services to the cast and crew during this tragic time”.
The film was to be a relatively low-budget affair. Baldwin, who has never strayed far from the national consciousness, first made his name as a soap actor and then made the jump to film, starring in The Hunt for Red October and working with the film directors Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen and with Tina Fey in the comedy series 30 Rock. In New York he was known for run-ins with photographers and with the New York Post; more recently his slurring, pursed-lipped impression of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live had won him widespread acclaim, along with the fury of the former president and his supporters.
News that he had been involved in a fatal accident prompted some of these detractors to jeer on Twitter. The Colorado congresswoman Lauren Boebert reposted an old tweet from Baldwin about making T-shirts bearing the call of protesters against police killings: “Hands Up – Don’t Shoot.” “Are these still available?” she asked, in a tweet directed at the actor. “Asking for a movie producer.” She claimed that Baldwin and others wanted to take away American gun rights “while knowing nothing about basic gun safety. Alec’s careless and ignorant actions killed a woman. If this was a conservative celebrity you’d be calling for his head.”
Baldwin was not known for westerns but he had been drawn in by Souza’s script for Rust, which told the story of an accidental shooting, a boy charged with murder and his grandfather, played by Baldwin, a fugitive who emerges from hiding to try to save the child from the gallows. “I’m an actor of the old school,” he told The Hollywood Reporter before filming began. “So if you read my resume, my motorcycle riding, my French, juggling, my horseback riding, my gunplay, is all right at my fingertips at all times.”
Scott Rasmussen, an armourer based in New Mexico, said he had been in talks with the film company to work on the project, but eventually went to work on another shoot. “It hurts me greatly when something like this happens,” said Rasmussen, 62, who is the brother-in-law of the Duchess of Sussex. “In my opinion it could have been avoided.”
Gun safety protocols on sets were tightened following the death of the actor Brandon Lee, who was killed by a bullet left in a prop gun in 1993. But Steven Hall, a director of photography in Britain, noted that the riskiest place on a set was often behind a camera, because the actor drawing a gun is often facing directly into the lens.
A representative for Lee’s sister Shannon said in a statement that she and her family were “sick to their stomachs that this type of thing is still happening on film sets. No one should ever be killed by a gun on a set and stricter safety regulations need to be implemented and should have been implemented twenty years ago.” The representative added that “her heart goes out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and all others involved in this tragedy”.
Hutchins was born in Ukraine and began her career working on British documentaries before coming to America and enrolling in a prestigious film school. Stas Bondarenko, a fellow cinematographer who was there too, and also grew up in the Soviet Union, told the magazine Variety that he recalled her calling him by a Russian diminutive of his first name “that no one other than my mother has used in years” when they worked together on film sets. He remembered her “taking on incredibly ambitious projects with very limited student resources, and somehow always knocking it out of the park”. By 2019 she had been named a “rising star” by American Cinematographer magazine.
On Thursday she was behind the camera as Baldwin rehearsed the gunfight scene, which was said to involve him drawing his weapon and backing out of the church. In an emergency call from the set, obtained by the website TMZ, a frantic script supervisor told a dispatcher that “we have two people accidentally shot on a movie set by a prop gun”. Moments later the supervisor can be heard shouting something about another member of the crew who “was supposed to check the guns”, adding: “He’s responsible for what happened.” The script supervisor said: “We were rehearsing and it went off, and I ran out, we all ran out.”
A colleague to whom she passed the phone told the operator that the director and the cinematographer were still alert and were being treated by a medic on set. Hutchins was said to have died on the way to hospital.
Souza said he was “gutted by the loss of my friend and colleague Halyna. She was kind, vibrant, incredibly talented, fought for every inch and always pushed me to be better.”
As tributes were paid by friends and colleagues, her husband, Matthew, with whom she had an eight-year-old son, told Insider: “I don’t think there are words to communicate the situation.”

I lived in Orange as a kid and went back in 2019 for a quick visit, it’s grown a bit but still retains its country charm. Cold winters, so a house with good insulation and heating is a must. Agriculture has changed since I was a kid, it was predominantly cherry and apple orchards but now there’s a lot of vineyards and diverse horticulture. The food scene is very big now, with lots of restaurants featuring local produce. Mining is also big part of the local economy but not very intrusive as the big Cadia mine is out of the way.
Boorowa and Young are close enough to Canberra to enjoy the benefits of big city shopping and services but far enough away for the city not to be daily influence on life. They are still rural places.
A distinct possibility.
But, again, that would be the armourer’s responsibility to retrieve, clear and store all weapons.

A person has died and another injured; that is a homicide situation. There is a prima facie case for liability. Even if one person had responsibility for the safety of the guns on set, which is unlikely, as producer Baldwin will have a vicarious responsibility; since he was also the shooter that responsibility may be more personal.

We had an armourer with us and he was the offscreen expert, and handed firearms over as necessary, and then took them away and locked them up. But then again, there was a degree of training for the onscreen personnel necessary, and they had to keep certain standards. For example, clearing the weapon when it was handed over, and not pointing it at anyone. We also didn’t allow people to handle the weapons, with the exception of the machinegun, which was a Browning on a tripod. Most blokes found it irresistible.
Of course, yesterday I texted the director and asked him to note he had not been shot in the filming. He didn’t seem to think it that funny.
Perversely, that would be a plank of any defence Baldwin might be asked to mount.

The gun that killed the cinematographer on the set of Alec Baldwin’s Rust had been used for target practice by crew members, sources linked to the western film’s production said.
Multiple sources connected to the set of Rust told TMZ that the same Colt pistol that went off in Alec Baldwin’s hands, killing Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza, had been used recreationally by crew members.
The sources claim that some crew members would go off for target practice using real bullets, and some believe a live round from those practice sessions found its way onto the set.
