You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.
Abraham Lincoln.

Dan Andrews and his secret state cronies should bear this in mind.
We’re awake and disgusted enough to bring his stinking cabal to justice.

The dismissive “no” doesn’t cut it. I understand the press did their usual stuff for clicks and eyeballs, and the fires were run o’seas as climageddon.

But the fires were real. People died and suffered tremendous loss. The alpine areas alone will take years to recover. My own family was involved in firefighting up on the Bells Line.

That shouldn’t be forgotten.

Albo will win in a Kevin 07 style win.
Small target campaign, a walk in.

Broadly agree – although probably not a walk in.

Politicians learn one thing at a time, usually the thing they last saw go wrong. Team Albanese has learned from the Shorten Experience and has been running subsurface since the 2019/20 bushfires in quite a disciplined way – albeit at the price of invisibility.

His problems will start when, in the few weeks of the election campaign, he is forced to bob up with a whole shelf of bran nu policies and relatively ‘fresh’ political faces.

He’s not only going to be selling policy shite like his Net Zero (and God knows what regarding Covid, budget repair, defence, Foreign Affairs, and generally healing the Nation) – but also relaunching the bunch of off-putting ‘talent’ with which he proposes to run the joint.

A big task for a mediocre and uninspiring little man. Even with much of the media in the tank.

You’d have to think Morrison is 97.3% gorne: lost by his personal flabby handling of the nearly three years of destruction of Australia by fire and pestilence.

UAP is likely to be a colourful $50m flash in the pan: competing with ‘Informal’ for the protest vote, but drowning in zero policy, florid candidates and Fat Bastard’s negative personal appeal.

The risk then is a minority Labor Government propped up by ‘Voice Of’s’, single-issue indies, and the fucking Greens.

Probably an existential risk.

In 2019 and into 2020, the place appeared to be burning down, with vast swathes of Victoria and NSW suffering severe bushfires over a prolonged period. South east Queensland was also affected, as was SA. The fires were extensive and hugely destructive, and the feeling of utter helplessness in the face of them was clear on the faces and attitudes of many of the people fighting them.

Every time it was Line Ball the Government hung on.
Bottom Line:
Albanese isn’t coasting in with a Small Target strategy, he either wins big or he doesn’t win.
That’s the reason for all the “Voices Of …” Labor funded AstroTurf Parties.

Just catching up, and noticed that someone who has very definitely stopped commenting here has taken a second swipe at the supposed “dickless”.
As a matter of logic, it would seem that Lizzie’s complaint must be either that:
(a) people are using the “like” button rather than spelling out their own views; or
(b) people are agreeing with comments that Lizzie takes exception to – apparently, from the context, ones that Lizzie takes as being expressed in an offensive manner.
As for (a), the like button is there for a reason. It enables people to express agreement without a thread being cluttered up with lots of one or two word statements of assent. It’s a feature of the site put there by dover and of which an on-thread debate showed a substantial majority approval.
As for (b), it would ring a bit hollow coming from someone to whom the word “dickless” is as natural a part of the vocabulary as “the” or “and”.

The “like” button can be used strategically and maliciously. Anyone can use it, and use it multiple times if you have a string of identities established through moderation. There are a lot of kooks out there who enjoy watching someone, who they think is susceptible to this type of manipulation, suffer.

Thirty million heavily armed righties would then be free to take action.
The woke military wouldn’t know what hit them.

Considering the Left are always doing just what they accuse others of doing, it may be worthwhile looking at the evidence of a coup from them.
The evidence would be found in the moving/stockpiling munitions etc in locations deemed secure by the Left.
It would also be worthwhile looking at construction of camps for holding large amounts of ‘infected’ people.

Labor has been in Opposition for three terms – and has fired barrages of policy blanks. So right out of ideas.

Judging by what I see in Net Zero, they are going to come to the 2022 election with a series of purchased ‘independently modelled’ policies, full of comforting numbers and graphs and heroic assumptions.

Again, judging by Net Zero, none of this will be practical – and it will get worse in post election horse trading.

As the implementation wheels start to wobble and fall off in government à la Rudd 1.0, I’d expect Albanese to receive the traditional “Good Government That Has Lost It’s Way” boning – probably in the quagmire of grief and blame leading up to 2025.

Possibly by Chalmers, possibly Plibbers. Probably not any of Bowen, Burke, Shorten. And Wong (arguably the most capable of the whole clownshow) is in the wrong house.

He’s been around Politics for about 45 years.
I read that he made $40 million from Gold Coast Real Estate by the time he was 30 [1984].
That night be an interesting story to flesh out?

He will likely get a lot of otherwise informal votes, he’s competing with people not voting at all.

98% of Informal Votes are people filling out the ballot incorrectly
The other 2% are blank ballots and people signing the ballot or writing a name on it, such as Donald Duck.
Since there are people named Donald Duck, that ballot is Informal.
Scrooge McDuck, Goofy, Mickey Mouse etc are formal, since there are no people of that name.

The only policy that matters right now is going back to February 2020.

Agree.
Since both major Parties have more or less identical Covid/19 Policies, it comes down to who can finesse the angry people.

15,000-odd tests, and only 11 ‘positive cases.’

In a State where Sneakers’ subjects have more or less satisfied his bugmens’ every demand (Practically 92% of all the State’s population over 12 has had the first stab. And the proportion with the second is close to 90). Sneakers has nowhere left to dictate, not with a promise to open up on February 5.

Or so you’d think. As of yesterday, folks who took their second stab 4 months ago have until Jan 31st to get a new one. And from Feb 1st, all of us who had the stab 3 months ago must go again. Or we all lose our jobs.

I’ve received Bettina’s email re. the shutting down of the GoFuckMe account. Here’s her email..

Is this 2022 or 1984?
Gofundme bans my fundraiser

“Urgent post-script to my blog from yesterday. I was delighted to receive a stream of notices from gofundme last night showing that many of you were sending in generous donations to support Chris, to help fight his wrongful dismissal case.

This morning I discovered all the donors had been sent an email saying that their money was to be refunded. Here is the gofundme email explaining the reason:

Dear Bettina,

We’re reaching out to you to inform you that your GoFundMe account has been removed because it violates our Terms of Service, which you can view here. Specifically, the content of your fundraiser falls under our “Prohibited conduct” section.

Our Terms of Service, along with strictly enforced policies from the payments industry, prohibit GoFundMe from allowing you to continue raising money on our platform.

Any donations made to your fundraiser that have not already been transferred to the bank account on file have been refunded. Those funds will arrive back in your donors’ bank accounts within 3-7 business days.

We ask that you please do not respond to this email, as we cannot reinstate your GoFundMe account.

Best regards,

The GoFundMe team
Visit our terms: https://www.gofundme.com/terms

As far as we can see, the prohibited conduct I have breached presumably falls under one of these ominous categories:

User Content that reflects or promotes behaviour that we deem, in our sole discretion, to be an abuse of power or in support of hate, violence, harassment, bullying, discrimination, terrorism, or intolerance of any kind relating to race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression, serious disabilities or diseases.

The legal defence of alleged crimes associated with hate, violence, harassment, bullying, discrimination, terrorism, or intolerance of any kind relating to race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression, serious disabilities or diseases, financial crimes or crimes of deception;

How about that? Another woke organisation taking it upon themselves to act as our moral guardians, even determining which victims we are permitted to support. This fundraising platform is full of campaigns to raise money to stop sexual assault and harassment, or funds for sexual abuse ‘survivors.’ Here’s Nina Funnell raising nearly $250,000 defending a survivor who defamed Christian Porter and other politicians during the furore over sexual assault/harassment allegations.

I hope you will agree this is an outrage and will help me alert people to this latest intrusion into our basic rights and liberties.

I urge all of you who have had your donations returned to please send them through to me again. I am now steering clear of these dictatorial fundraising platforms and ask you to please donate to Chris via my Paypal or direct deposit using details given here. Please mark your donation “Chris Fund”.

What a start to the New Year – a telling reminder of the dangerous world we are facing and the need for us all to step up, speak out and take on this mob controlling our lives.”

Re uncharted territory, the last Newspoll, iirc, had Albanese & Co. taking 12 seats off the Libs, including Dutton’s. Yes, it’s just a poll, but I sense that barring a campaigning disaster of Shortenesque proportions, the inner faction of the Uniparty is lining up to take over the reins of governance from the outer faction, which is how it’s been in Australia since the ’90s. While there are strong sentiments of dissent from the official narrative out there, I’m afraid they are numerically insignificant. There’s a lot of ruin in a nation, and in a generally complacent nation like Australia politicians can get away with a lot of ruinous behaviour before the people become restive. The Hunchback, the Ukrainian & Sneakers have each gambled and won on that.

But in any case if someone wanted to use multiple online personae to post lots of “I agree”‘s rather than lots of upticks wouldn’t the effect be the same?

As for ego and taking things seriously, if I’d really wanted to chase an audience with comments about Lizzie, think what I would have done with this…

Rabz has a new show? Who knew? I deliberately don’t keep up much here now. And I certainly don’t want a bun fight with Johanna. I am sick to death of her, and may note btw that most bullies like her are total narcissists

Less than 15 minutes after having instantly assumed, totally wrongly, that a two word blog comment was ALL ABOUT HER!!!!, she accused others of being narcissists (in a comment which also included the disdainful brushoff of Rabz’ show, with “Who knew?”).

As self-beclownments go it was really only an early season warmup, like a Test player making a half century in a district game, but if I’d had a mind to I could have made hay with it. I’ve actually restrained myself from deprecation of Lizzie’s comments far, far more often than I’ve allowed myself to hit “Post”. Like Robert Clive, I stand astonished at my own moderation.

Indeed Barnaby got a lot of support because he said things people liked and turned out to be just another wet.

Exactly.
Bananaby had a bit of a cheer squad here, kicking the political corpse of McCormack on the way out.
Truth is, there is no practical difference between Bananaby and McCormack.
Except honesty.
McCormack was up front about where he stood.
I see someone upthread talking about Bananaby “defending rural interests in Western NSW”.

Proving it though is not going to be easy, as even getting proper treatment with steriods is difficult, let alone anyone diagnosing it as vaxx related.

Lizzie – many GPs are terrified of prescribing anything that they think will be used as “early treatment” which defies the orthodox narrative. But give it a go.

As for the hospital system & ER….well……I don’t know if you followed our nightmare experience when grandson was king hit & jaw broken in 2 places a few months ago. Couldn’t get him operated as emergency in St Vincents because system was overloaded….said “go home for a week, then maybe”!!!! Got him into RNS where, even there operation was delayed a couple of days. Kid was in agony. Hospitals are in a mess. And it’s not Covid itself. You can guess the rest.

Ghislaine Maxwell will not reveal details of others involved in Jeffrey Epstein’s child sex-trafficking network in exchange for a lenient sentence, her brother says.

The British socialite’s decision not to co-operate with US investigators after her conviction last week will offer comfort to alleged co-conspirators, including four women who worked for the couple. High-profile men who have been linked to the abuse of under-age girls, including Prince Andrew, will also be relieved to discover that Maxwell, 60, does not intend to talk. The prince denies any wrongdoing.

Prince Andrew is accused of having sex with Virginia Roberts Giuffre when she was 17. Picture: AFP.
Prince Andrew is accused of having sex with Virginia Roberts Giuffre when she was 17. Picture: AFP.
Ian Maxwell, 65, said his sister maintained her innocence and had no plans to cut a deal. “Prosecution confirmed no plea bargain offers were made or received” before the trial, he said. “I expect that position to be maintained.”

His sister faces up to 65 years in jail after a jury in New York convicted her of recruiting and trafficking girls as young as 14 for abuse by Epstein, her former boyfriend. Prosecutors described Maxwell as a “sophisticated predator” who groomed and manipulated girls in “one of the worst crimes imaginable”.

What did you gain?
Fuck all, but I did ensure Xmas for two families existed. Or at least, that was the intention. But see below..

What did you lose?
Well, I spent a week in hospital, including a day in ICU, after my first jab, which (by suggestion of three docs) meant that my cunning plan of having shot two just before Xmas didn’t happen.

So, in fact, I gained exactly nothing because no-one was going to challenge me over Xmas as to vaccination status! Pretty hard even for the most determined Karen to slag off at a bloke who has lost 15% of his body weight.

So a nett loss thus far (no gain, unknown substance inserted, ugly side effect experienced)

What are you yet to lose?
Rhetorical question.

I have everything I haven’t yet lost “yet to lose”. As does every living thing.

What has your actions cost others?
Fuck all.

On an epidemiological level my contribution to whatever you might think the effects of “leaky” jabs are is minuscule.

The absolute number might fall within historical norms, but I saw a lot of teachers, nurses, social workers, etc, who are now unemployed due to mandates. All traditional left voting demographics. Without doubt, many remained employed, but have shit on liver about the conditions imposed to be so. The kumbaya crowd are none too enamoured with the mandates either. Things have been turned on their head a little.

I won a lot of money on the LNP victory when polls thought Shorten was a Monty. Trump also proved that they are merely a tool used to influence opinion. I think the next election might throw up a few surprises.

In WA, the professional railway folk and those in the enthusiast and historical fraternity with a better understanding of the history and practicalities of the whole thing just roll their eyes.

But what hope have you when it’s a social media thing driven by rose glasses wearing nostalgics (who remember riding the Albany Progress as kids, and the sense of adventure never went away), or folks who are scared of driving and/or find the bus service uncomfortable?

Really, you were hospitalized due to the shot? Wow. Hope you’re feeling better. What were the symptoms and which poison?

Not entirely true, but close enough.

First AZ dose (they can hit me with mRNA at the point of a gun) can – especially in men of a certain age… mine – have a side-effect of the runs.

I was – though it hadn’t been diagnosed, not for want of trying – already having signs of a gut issue by name of Microscopic Colitis… which also effects men of a certain age, and in much the same way. The combination of the two was, so my Gastro told me, something he’d not seen in 30 years of medicine.

Acute renal failure and blood tests that had one of the folk from ICU pop up to the ward to ensure I wasn’t actually comatose or dead. Or, perhaps, to figure out how I wasn’t! Lost 15kg and ended up in ICU for a day. AND the buggers have told me I have to get off the fags. Which I am, but I am very, very Arky to be around. SWMBO is taunting me, but as she smokes menthol (spit, chuck) it isn’t working.

Pretty much back to normal now, but a rocky few weeks.

Presently cost about $6 and almost 3 hours from Hamilton Interchange to Sydney by train. That’s the express.

Last time I did the XPT from Singleton to Central around $30 about 2 hours as it pretty well much expresses from Newcastle to Hornsby, then Strathfield then into Central.

VFT, personally I’d be interested to see the proposed route. The present line through the Kuringai National Park is limited to slow speeds, has quite a few very old tunnels, can’t expand any further sideways and really doesn’t open up till the other side of Gosford. Only other way would out back through Penrith/Richmond then north but you hit the same mountains or along the Northern Beaches and across a couple of kilometers of water the mouth of the Hawkesbury into Ettalong which isn’t happening. Like to see some particulars and cost benefit analysis otherwise it is another ALP stunt.

In WA, the professional railway folk and those in the enthusiast and historical

There is often a lot of cart before horse stuff that happens. The last time the Newcastle Sydney VFT was proposed (no route decided, just proposed), government and council proclaimed the site of the Central Coast station to be Ourimbah.

When the Inland Railway was proposed the ‘Via Recta’ aka the “right way” proposal was resurrected. Rather than running the line from Goondiwindi to Poowoomba and then down the range to Brisbane, SG the Goondi line to Warwick, then pick up the formation of the Maryvale Branch, then use the formation of the Mt Edwards Branch to around Kalbar, and either keep going to Ipswich or swing across to Bromelton and the existing SG Line. The missing bit of around 20km between Maryvale and Mt Edwards would require a tunnel under Cunningham Gap or lots of tight curves and steep grades (which is where the original Via Recta proposals all came unstuck).

I was at ARHS line at Rosewood the day the new Gold Coast line was opened to Helensvale (that line’s first terminus) and channel 7 sent a reporterette out to shoot some ‘compare & contrast’ footage. Many of we bystanders laughed when the driver of the steamer when asked a question about then and now, said despite the old technology and windy old railway, in 1996 it takes 10 minutes longer to get to Southport Station (the transit centre is on the old station) from South Brisbane than it did using steam when the line closed in 1964. Needless to say that bit didn’t make it to air.

Yeah. The Sydney basin is a bastard to get any form of transportation artery into or out of. Particularly now that everything that can be developed, has.

And you can safely bet on the NIMBY brigade doing their best to stymie any vaguely practical alternatives.

The ‘Short North’ has always been the busiest of all NSW’s rail lines, because of the sheer concentration of resources and folks in that area. You can’t restrict it to passenger ops and local freight only, because Port Botany is pretty much container-only. All the legacy yards are in the Sydney Metro area now Broadmeadow and much of Newy’s rail infrastructure is long gone, and the only bulk port in that Sydney area is Newcastle’s Kooragang Island. So all grain, coal, etc. from all points of the compass has to go through there.

About the only hope they have of upgrading train speed and capacity through there, is the slow, incremental increase in locomotive horsepower to improve the running times of the non-passenger trains.

Ourimbah, WTF who is sitting on a tonne of development land there or did someone just pick Ourimbah because it is central to the 2 centres of population? Gosford would be obvious but has grown as far as it can with all the mountains around it but from my observations every time we are down that way I’d say Tuggerah these days. Seems to be booming and not the sleepy forested area I remember as a child.

True, where we are was almost impossible to predict. But it’s not the prediction that’s important, it’s being flexible enough to change your mind and respond.

Nearly two years after the coronavirus pandemic brought much of the U.S. economy to a halt, public companies are recording some of their best ever financial results.

Profit growth is strong. Most companies’ sales are higher than where they were before Covid-19—often well above. The liquidity crunch many feared in 2020 never materialized, leaving companies with sizable cash cushions. The stock market ended 2021 near record highs and far fewer public companies filed for bankruptcy in 2021 than in the years before the pandemic.

“At the start of the pandemic, if you asked us to look forward, I don’t think we would have expected this outcome,” said Brian Kloss, a portfolio manager for Brandywine Global, a unit of Franklin Resources Inc. that manages about $67 billion in assets. “This has been very different than any other cycle we’ve seen.”

Government programs provided funding for businesses, helping them keep workers, while enhanced unemployment benefits and direct aid to consumers also kept income up, said Kathy Bostjancic, chief U.S. financial economist at Oxford Economics.

“The support to households was greater than in the past, so that really helped fuel consumer spending,” she said. “That’s what fueled revenue growth and profits.”

The rebound is real for smaller companies, but it is the biggest companies that have fared the best, a Wall Street Journal analysis of corporate financial data shows. For large-capitalization companies in the S&P 500 index, profits and revenue were hurt less by the pandemic’s initial economic slowdown. The biggest companies also rebounded more quickly than smaller ones, even as uncertainty deepened over Covid-19 infection rates and the spread of variants, rising inflation and supply-chain woes.

“The larger firms are able to navigate the supply-chain issues a lot easier,” Ms. Bostjancic said. “They have scale and additional resources that the medium-size to small-size firms are going to find more difficult.”
Sales

Companies in the S&P 500 range from clothing retailer Gap Inc., with a market value around $6.6 billion, to Apple Inc., which surged to a nearly $3 trillion market value. The median S&P 400 midcap company has a market value of about $5.7 billion, while the median S&P 600 small cap sports a $1.6 billion valuation, data from S&P Global Market Intelligence shows.

Apple has a market cap of US$3 trillion. Just fucking wow.

The missing bit of around 20km between Maryvale and Mt Edwards would require a tunnel under Cunningham Gap or lots of tight curves and steep grades (which is where the original Via Recta proposals all came unstuck).

Yep. The present solution is to recut and lower the floor of the Toowoomba tunnel. Though that is a big job, given the intention is still (supposedly) to double-stack container trains along that way.

I am not sure if the extra capacity of a 1.8km long double-stacker limited to 80kph, outweighs the transit speeds and practical running efficiencies of a 1.8km single-stacker that is permitted 115kph.

But then again, I just drive the things and curse out when the shift runs over time due to being delayed.*

* Delays are expensive. Not just to the causing party, but to everyone else affected by it. Particularly when relief crews need to be called on at short notice and driven miles and miles to get to you. And you still need to get to your book-off depot or even all the way home…

Just like some nitwit proposes or outright demands passenger train services return to Albany every other Wednesday in Sandgroperstan. On the grounds that 7 or 8 hours’ slow and roundabout (Railway line goes to Northam, turns South to go down thru York, Beverley, Brookton, Narrogin, Wagin, Katanning, Mt Barker, Cranbook and then eventually Albany) travel will somehow be good for regional towns and tourism.

You can drive it in 4hr via the old highway (The original Stagecoach route, no less!) via Kojonup. And REX flies it in 1hr.

Well might the railway fundies roll their eyes!
I rode that passenger train from my home town on the line to school where I boarded in Albany for a couple of years, and managed a couple of Perth-home sleeper rides before it shut down. A useful alternative if you don’t have a car, but they have road coaches nowadays for that situation.
I hitchhiked a lot, after they stopped the passenger trains and I grew up enough.

It seems likely that minorities will hold the balance of power.

1. Why Ourimbah ? I suspect a former unlamented Mayor, but whoever it was got the new interurban train servicing faculty built close by, rather than many better sites that required fewer resumptions, and where they didn’t need to build a bridge to ensure staff could get to work when it rained.

2. Apart from the range crossing the Via Recta actually makes sense. The 3 branches involved are relatively straight and flat, it’s just that missing 20km that is a problem, and with a bit of creativity the long proposed highway tunnel/bypass of the landslip prone Gap could be built as well.

SCT has a large container park at Bromelton , or the existing facilities at Acacia Ridge could be used to break the double stacks down to get through Brisbane and use the existing SG infrastructure to move it to the port.

This would orphan the Wallangarra line, but it is only used by 1 or 2 military trains a year and a steam tour from Warwick every 2 months so that should not be a big problem .

Labor pledges $500m in its first budget for fast rail, with Sydney to Newcastle the priority

Cunning stunt. A tray of unfunded free stuff laid out for the punters.

In infrastructure terms, $500m buys you studies and surveys and preliminary engineering – the delicious prospect of which can be spread in bite-sized pieces around multiple electorates.

It also spins off hopey hope amongst people who would like to see their land values increase because a station might be proposed for Upper Bumcrack (irrespective of such a station spelling certain doom to the ‘fast’ part of the ‘fast rail’ concept).
