This is about the visual distortion of history.

“Gay character must be played by gay actor…”

Otoh,

“White character can be played by black actor…”

I think it’s about more jobs for minority actors.

It’s a pretty competitive profession, or so they say.

The business has never much cared about historical accuracy anyway.

And because it’s a business, how far it goes will be determined by the customer’s response.

I’m also very suspicious of this “long Covid” caper. It sounds very much like post viral syndrome to me. I’ve had it, and it isn’t pleasant – it can hang around for years and make life very difficult.

However, it has all the hallmarks of being played as a threshold into the NDIS and permanent disability status.

An illegal immigrant … broke into a church in Neuchâtel, causing tens of thousands of Swiss francs in damage to the church’s organ.

Police state they believe that the man did not damage the organ for religious or political reasons but did so as a result of trying to spend the night hidden in the church and also stated that the illegal migrant suffers from mental health problems.

In Victorian schools:

Schools will be strongly encouraged to mark Sorry Day, recognise the “significant trauma” of colonisation, hold welcome to country celebrations and fly the Aboriginal flag, under new state laws.

Even schools, kinders, universities and state-run childcare centres without Indigenous students must become culturally inclusive or risk running afoul of new child safe standards.

From next term all Victorian educational settings must provide culturally safe environments in which Aboriginal young people are respected and valued.

This includes recognition that “Australia’s colonial history has caused significant trauma and hurt that individuals, families and communities still feel today”.

Of course this will become cemented in place, and the end results will be – a divided and embittered school where some are “special” and the others are well, just guilty.

This is about the visual distortion of history. We are being forced to accept things that we know are not true. The more ridiculous the distortion, the more the pressure to conform.

This is what it is for me. The clearer your grasp of history, the more it will be rankled by liberties taken for the sake of present vanities. The most obvious cases are the inserting of black people in Northern European stories. When they do it, my first response is that they did it because they want me to think a certain way, to change my history. If you respect history you don’t change it.

It goes beyond that, of course. The movie 300 laughably tried to paint the Spartans as the champions of freedom. This would have come as a shock to the helots against whom the Spartan state would declare war every year so citizens could injure of kill them with impunity for whatever reason without it being a crime or incurring divine displeasure. The Spartans would not have liked being so depicted either. They loved their state and would not want to be presented as heroes of individual freedom.

I understand that almost any story from set in another time must nevertheless resonate with the present. It is not a weakness that science fiction dramas that they look at questions of competing loyalties, or the mixed blessings of technology, or good and evil – these are our questions. There would be no interest in a drama about giant sentient purple worms and their ritual turning inside-out unless it could be mapped onto a contemporary issue like environmental degradation or something.

That there were people of African extraction in Rome goes without saying. The Romans, while dependent on slavery, did let people be freed from slavery and their offspring could even hope to be citizens, so a few black legionaries and even officers, perhaps even knights and Senators makes sense. But making them constantly subject to racial abuse and being singularly altruistic is just trying too hard, and not trying history at all.

I was pleased that the last season of The Last Kingdom that included a black priest. The Church was THE international institution of the day, and a priest of any talent might expect to find himself being sent elsewhere in Christendom. I believe the Celtic Christians had maintained close connections with Egypt. I knew it could happen, but it was a pleasant surprise to see it since I had not actually imagined it. Same thing in The Name of the Rose – that Abby attracted some of the most talented people from all around the Mediterranean and beyond.

I always thought soccer was very gay.

New FIFA Rules Would Allow Men to Compete Against Women Without Testosterone Suppressors (20 Jun)

The new rules proposed by international soccer’s governing body, FIFA, are looking to erase testosterone requirements and allow trans female athletes to play against natural-born women just by “self-identifying.”

Taking the exact opposite track as the ruling announced last weekend by swimming’s governing body where trans athletes will find more restrictions to participation, soccer looks to be ready to throw out all restrictions and allow any trans athlete to play just because they claim to be a woman, the Daily Mail reported.

The Iranian Women’s soccer team smiles.

On the other hand almost all the kids who watched 300 in the cinema would never have heard of Herodotus or Simonides. The movie is basically an adaptation of a graphic novel, ie cartoon book. Like the Asterix ones. But reading Asterix gets you to Julius Caesar’s Gallic War and 300 gets you to quite a lot of serious Greek history. The really good thing is any kid after watching the movie can look up Thermopylae on Wikipedia and get a reasonable snapshot. Whereas they’d never get any of it in school (unless Bruce Pascoe has written a book about the heroic Aboriginal hoplite mercenaries who fought with Leonidas).

Watch this story disappear. Mosque in outer Melbourne gets trashed in the wee hours. Police make arrests. No description of suspects or motive. Another case of dinky-di Aussie bigotry and Islamophobia perhaps? If you leapt to that conclusion, nothing to indicate otherwise.

But … not mentioned is that the mosque is of the Ahmadiyya persuasion, a schismatic doctrine denounced by both Shia and Sunni.

Strongly suspect ‘Muhammad’ and its many variations will figure strongly in the list of alleged vandals. And that means, of course, it will be all quietly forgotten.

I don’t know if anyone remembers that show Frasier, but the likeable but crusty father was, I had been told, gay. No big deal. (Apparently in stark contrast to his character he was the most refined of the actors being an aficionado of wine, opera and such.)

Whilst idling some time away I looked him up on Wikipedia to see when he died. The article states that he had several long term relationships with women – probably not gay then.

But the most interesting part was:

He was a Catholic who called Christianity “probably the most important facet of my life” and prayed “Most glorious blessed spirit, I thank you for all the gifts and talents that you’ve given me. Please help me to use all these gifts and talents to their fullest. And please accept this performance as a prayer of praise and thanks to you,” prior to each of his performances. Mahoney would also say prayers upon waking up and before going to sleep daily, and would repeatedly pray “Dear God, please help me to treat everybody – including myself – with love, respect, and dignity.”

A very private man.

Fruit of my loins saw it with me in his final year of high school and. after wondering why all the Spartans looked like refugees from the LeatherMen contingent at the Gay Pride Parade, the next thing he did was read Steven Pressfield’s ‘Gates of Fire’, and after that, Xenophon in both Pressfield’s account and the original.

ADF in Vietnam ‘gender, peace’ operation
Sarah Ison
Political Reporter
8:48PM June 20, 2022
24 Comments

The Australian Defence Force is sending 30 personnel to Vietnam with a focus on “gender and peace” operations.

The contingent arrived on Monday in Vietnam for the annual Pacific Partnership, the biggest multilateral humanitarian assistance and disaster relief mission conducted in the Indo-Pacific, and joined gender, peace and security advisers along with Australian navy musicians.

It follows an updated national action plan released last year on women, peace and security, which included goals to increase women’s participation in conflict prevention and peace processes.

“Achieving gender equality is one of the most effective ways to secure sustainable peace and resilient communities,” the plan reads. “A deeper understanding of the gendered drivers of inequality and violence, including the different roles and experiences of all actors in crises, can help shape effective conflict prevention responses.”

A push for soldiers to undertake a $12,000 Monash University Gender Peace and Security Course as part of the plan has attracted controversy in recent years, with concerns such training is not the best use of taxpayer funds.

The Department of Defence stressed the importance of the program and said it encouraged greater participation of women in the workforce and ensured more women’s voices were heard in the defence and foreign affairs areas.

The three-week trip to Vietnam will include a focus on gender, peace and security.

“The ADF contingent will provide tailored medical, dental and surgical support … and participate in a variety of training opportunities and information exchanges,” Defence said in a statement on Monday.

Words fail me, they honestly do.

Happy winter solstice, cats and kittehs.

Although it keeps getting colder for another six weeks or so, at least the days begin to get slightly longer. Where I live, the benefit is often wiped out by morning fog which can last until almost noon on a bad day.

But, fog can have its charm. I will never forget sitting in a taxi on the way to work in Canberra early one foggy morning, driving through an old suburb with lots of grassy verge and hedges (Griffith.) As we slowed down before an intersection, four white rabbits hopped out of the mist onto the grass and began having breakfast. It was surreal, beautiful, and I’ll never forget it. A cross between Alice in Wonderland and the best Disney animations.

Sorry if this has already been discussed. In haste. Busy packing up house, leaving Viktoriastan in 10 days.

Extremely disappointing that this “survey” of only some 500 people gets promoted as being representative of true public opinion.

https://www.theaustralian.com.au/world/january-6-hearing-majority-of-us-believes-donald-trump-should-be-charged-over-riots/news-story/e0a7382ba0ba65cf4c7d4d7d865e9c8c

More than half of Americans say Donald Trump should be charged with a crime over his role in the January 6th riot on Capitol Hill, according to a new poll that suggests the Congressional committee charged with investigating the traumatic day might be having an impact on public opinion.

At the halfway point of six public and televised hearings into the January 6th riots, which have accused the former president of instigating and encouraging the riot, 58 per cent of Americans said the former president “should be charged with a crime” according to an ABC News/IPSOS poll, up from 52 per cent in a separate poll in April.

The poll, conducted after the third public hearing that aired last Thursday (Friday AEST), found three quarters of respondents believed Mr Trump bore some blame for the historic riot, which saw hundreds of pro-Trump supporters storm the Capitol building, demanding then vice-president Mike Pence overturn the 2020 election.

“Partisanship appears to be the largest driver behind these sentiments, with almost all Democrats believing Trump is responsible versus fewer than a quarter of Republicans,” IPSOS said in a statement, noting 91 per cent of Democrats said Mr Trump was culpable compared with 19 per cent of Republicans.

Trump’s power over the Republican Party remains ‘unabashed’
The University of Sydney’s Simon Jackman says he doesn’t think the January 6 hearings will hurt Donald Trump “at all” with the people that… matter most. “Such is the power of Donald Trump,” he said. “Senate Republicans do not want to cross Donald Trump. Mr Jackman said it More
A third of Americans, according to the poll of 545 voters, said they had watched the hearings “closely”, while 37 per cent said they had paid little attention. “Sixty per cent believe the committee is conducting a fair and impartial investigation,” IPSOS said.

Rape trial delay request over Lisa Wilkinson’s Brittany Higgins Logie speech
Alexandra Middleton
Cadet Reporter
@alexandraamidd
2 hours ago June 21, 2022

The man accused of raping former Liberal staff member Brittany Higgins is attempting to delay his trial after journalist Lisa Wilkinson’s highly publicised speech at the Logie Awards on Sunday.

Wilkinson won the Logie for most outstanding news coverage or public affairs report for her interview with Ms Higgins last year over the alleged rape of the former Liberal staffer by Bruce Lehrmann inside senator Linda Reynolds’ office at Parliament House in March 2019.

Mr Lehrmann was charged last year and pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting Ms Higgins.

He is due to face the ACT Supreme Court next Monday but his barrister, Steve Whybrow, has asked the court to delay proceedings following the widespread publicity of Wilkinson’s speech in order to give Mr Lehrmann a fair trial.

Mr Whybrow said TV ratings indicated more than 800,000 people tuned in to the Logies on Sunday and that Wilkinson’s speech received countless reactions on social media and news outlets, resulting in intense scrutiny ahead of the trial.

Mr Whybrow said his client would rather not delay proceedings.

“He wants to get it on, but he wants a fair trial,” he said.

Wilkinson referred to Ms Higgins’ story in her acceptance speech as “a political problem”, adding that it was the most important journalism she had worked on across her 40-year-long career.

“I knew it from the very first phone call I had early last year with a young woman whose name she told me was Brittany Higgins,” Wilkinson said.

“Four incredibly intense sleepless weeks later, when our story went to air, the entire country knew the name Brittany Higgins.

“As Brittany warned me before we went to air, her story would be seen by many of the most powerful people in this country not as a human problem but as a political problem.”

Wilkinson has been approached for comment.

ACT Chief Justice Lucy McCallum will consider the application to vacate the trial on Tuesday.

Surely a journalist of Lisa Wilkinson’s calibre should have known enough to keep her trap shut, regarding a matter that was before the courts?

Grenell is more politically sound on the big issues than Mike Pence was.

Pence was intended to smooge the conservative Christian wing of the GOP, which was necessary due to Stormy and etc. They’re the bunch who refused to vote for Romney. Unfortunately Pence turned out to be GOP-elite, and not of the sweaty-shirted proletarian Trump insurgency. I hope Pence stands in the 2024 primary so we can see how low his vote comes in at.

Trump has now demonstrated very clearly to the Christian right that he’s kosher, so he can afford to pick someone like Grenell. That’d be A grade trolling of the Dems, but I’d prefer Candace Owens myself though.

What to do about Yuendumu?
Where black female lives appear not to matter

By Tony Letford / The Spectator

The Weekend Australian recently ran a series of articles providing in unflinching, graphic detail, an account of a young woman from the remote Central Desert community of Yuendumu, ‘Ruby’, who was repeatedly bashed and raped by her own father. The depravity depicted in the story was truly shocking. What made it worse was that, when Ruby went to the police to complain, her extended family ostracised her for reporting the matter.

The story moved Northern Territory Supreme Court Judge Judith Kelly to go public and give an interview to the Weekend Australian to draw attention to the problem of domestic violence in the NT, (‘Epidemic of violence plagues women: judge’). Justice Kelly said Ruby’s account failed to shock her ‘Because it’s a horrendous story but we see that every day’. Justice Kelly noted that between 2000 and 2002, two Aboriginal men were fatally shot by the police and, ‘In that same period, 52 women have been the victims of homicide, mostly by their partners’.

While Supreme Court judges can sometimes make generalised comments about society when passing judgement in court cases, it is rare for them to speak out so frankly at other times. So Justice Kelly’s incendiary remarks should have created a massive response in the media. Instead the national mainstream media had other issues of concern. The ABC decided that a traffic accident involving two Aboriginal adolescents on bicycles and a white driver who allegedly called them ‘black dogs’ was of national importance. I couldn’t see why the murder of 52 Aboriginal women was less important than an incident of alleged racial abuse by a white male driver so I sent the following request to the ABC on its online contact system for clarification.

‘Today your Mildura office published a story about two kids who were allegedly racially abused by a motorist who damaged their bikes. The story included photos of the kids and their father. Last Saturday, the Australian had a front page story in which a senior NT judge spoke about the epidemic of domestic violence in indigenous communities and the ‘vast numbers of Aboriginal women in the morgue and in hospitals. I am a writer and am looking into an article about the ABC coverage of indigenous affairs.’

‘I wonder if you could tell me if anyone in your news rooms read the article in last Saturday’s Australian and if there was any attempt to follow it up? If not, would it be correct to conclude that, when some racist idiot shouts at a couple of Aboriginal kids, its national news for the ABC but, when a young girl is raped by her father then ostracised by her community for reporting it to the police, it isn’t worth covering?’

‘Also, when a senior judge speaks out so strongly about domestic violence in Indigenous communities, why it isn’t deemed worth reporting?’

But answer came there none. Possibly the ABC journos, are too busy looking for more examples of motorists abusing kids to look into the stories behind the Aboriginal women murdered in domestic violence disputes. The ABC is not alone in its somewhat selective reporting of indigenous affairs. When the NT police officer accused of the murder of Kumanjayi Walker was found not guilty and acquitted, the Harvey Norman Herald which used to be known as the Sydney Morning Herald, commented, ‘The verdict inevitably caused anguish and despair for Mr Walker’s family and, more broadly, Indigenous Australians who believe – with some justification – that the justice system is stacked against them’ (Profound issues remain after acquittal in Kumanjayi Walker case SMH 13/3).

Like the ABC, the Herald is more concerned about one man who was shot by a white police officer while resisting arrest than the murders of numerous Aboriginal women by their partners.

In some ways the willful blindness of left journalists covering indigenous affairs resembles the self-deception that Russians seem to have in relation to the invasion of Ukraine. Numerous surveys have shown that Russians overwhelmingly believe that blame for the ‘military operation’ in Ukraine can be laid at the door of the US and Nato. Depending on which survey you use, somewhere between only four to seven per cent of the population believe that the war was caused by Russia. People, it would seem, can be made to believe anything if it resonates with their world view.

If the distorted or mad view of the Russian people about the Ukraine invasion can be attributed to restricted access to the truth and lies told by their government, then how do we explain the inability or refusal of many Australian journalists to recognise the horror of life for indigenous women in communities such as Yuendumu? Unlike the Russians, Australian journalists are well educated and have unrestricted access to the vast amount of information that is available concerning dysfunction and criminality in remote Aboriginal communities in the deep north. Yet while the daily incidence of serious criminal assaults due to domestic violence continues, it is rarely mentioned in mainstream media.

In the May edition of the Monthly, Melbourne writer Anna Krien is allowed almost twenty pages to go into forensic detail about the shooting of Kumanjayi Walker by Constable Zachary Rolfe. (‘A shooting in Yuendumu’). Ms Krien presents a superficially neutral account of the shooting and subsequent trial of Rolfe but can’t resist concluding, with a literary flourish by claiming that ‘Walker never stood a chance against Rolfe. Not in life and not in death’ and, while Krien goes into great detail about aggressive police behaviour in the community, she glosses over the violence that women in the community experience on a daily basis.

In a recent edition of Justinian, Richard Ackland’s online blog about the law, Justice Kelly said, ‘Like most people, I would like to see an end to indigenous disadvantage. Like most people, I am pretty clueless about how that is to be accomplished. I would also like to see an end to the kind of polarisation that has people isolated in bubbles of the like-minded not listening to each other – but this is not happening’.

The refreshing, honest, candour of Justice Kelly stands in contrast to the obfuscations, and distortions that too many journalists use when discussing places like Yuendumu. If our journalists could exhibit the same honesty about remote indigenous communities as Justice Kelly, it may not immediately solve anything but it would be a start.

Flags – in 2003 Eddie complied with protocol.

The Collingwood logo (on official documents, merchandise etc) had the Collingwood flag on the left and the Australian flag on the right. It was changed to the other way around on advice of the relevant department.

Protocol:
Where all flagpoles are the same height and positioned in a straight row, the Australian National Flag should always be positioned on the far left (meaning the left of a person facing the building).

The correct precedence or order for flying flags in the community is:

Australian National Flag
National flags of other nations
State and territory flags
Aboriginal Flag and Torres Strait Islander Flag, or other flags prescribed by the Flags Act 1953
Ensigns and pennants (including local government, private organisations, sporting clubs and community groups).
Unless all flags on display can be raised and lowered simultaneously, the Australian National Flag should be raised first and lowered last. If there are two Australian National Flags, one can be flown at each end of a line of flags.

When flying the Australian National Flag alone at a building which has more than two flagpoles, the Australian National Flag should be flown in the centre, or as near as possible to it.

Is that why the Collingwood flag isn’t flown on sid arbor bridge?

Adam Bandt wasn’t available for comment.

It mocks everybody equally, the British, the Indians, the concert party, the military, and the class system – both British and Indian.

The taunting of those who appeared effeminate was really only from the sergeant major, the hapless concert party are sympathetic characters.

The real offence of the show in the eyes of the left is that it accurately portrayed the strong discrimination by the Indians against other Indians of lower class.

oh.. and from the judge:

Wilkinson’s speech, in which the journalist said the Higgins story was “by far the most important work I have ever done”, came after stern warnings from the court and the prosecutor to the Ten Network reporter and media generally about commenting on the matter before it went to trial.

“You asked me to prohibit publication and I refused because … I trusted the press,” the judge told Drumgold. “You were right and I was wrong.”

“Mightn’t good journalism be mindful of criminal proceedings and remembering to insert the magic word ‘alleged’?”

So feeling pity for a young man and writing “this poor young man”, a young man who’s had his presumption of innocence trashed by a scurrilous media, grubby politicians with a political agenda and scummy elites such as Mrs Pirate Man, is now “lionising”?

Major decision in Brittany Higgins rape case handed down

Political Reporter

11:34AM June 21, 2022

Brittany Higgins’ case against her accused rapist has been delayed because of the spike in publicity prompted by Channel 10 journalist Lisa Wilkinson’s Logie award acceptance speech, where she made reference to the allegations.

Lawyers for the accused, Bruce Lehrmann, argued the case was prejudiced after Ms Wilkinson’s speech and the following public interest. They pointed out Ms Wilkinson’s speech was searched for on Google more than 800,000 times on Monday alone.

The trial was due to start on Monday June 27, but has now been stayed until later this year.

Lehrmann has pleaded not guilty and denies the allegations.

ACT Supreme Court Chief Justice Lucy McCallum made the judgement “regrettably and with gritted teeth”, noting the “corrosive effect” a delay would have on the course of justice.

“The recent publicity does in my view change the landscape because of its immediacy, its intensity and its capacity to obliterate the important distinctions between an allegation that remains untested at law, and one that has been accepted by a jury giving a true verdict according to the evidence in accordance with the respective oaths or affirmations,” Ms McCallum said.

Aberdeen Floating restaurant sinks. From the Daily Mail

“Floating Restaurant has capsized in the South China Sea less than a week after it was towed away from the city, its parent company said Monday.

The restaurant encountered ‘adverse conditions’ on Saturday as it was passing the Xisha Islands, also known as the Paracel Islands, in the South China Sea, and water entered the vessel and it began to tip, according to Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises Ltd.

The company said no one was injured, but that efforts to save the vessel failed and it capsized on Sunday”.

Lidia Thorpe says for First Nations people the Australian flag is ‘absurd’ and ‘an obscenity’

Outspoken Greens Senator Lidia Thorpe has blasted the Australian flag as an “obscenity”, calling for a new national design.

Her controversial comments come after Greens leader Adam Bandt refused to stand in front of the Australian flag, instead appearing with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island flags during a press conference on Monday.

The stunt, which resulted in the national flag being moved to the side of the room, has sparked a wave of criticism from other federal politicians.

But Senator Thorpe, who is indigenous, said: “The Australian flag represents a colonial invasion, which massacred and murdered thousands of Aboriginal women, men and children”.

“For First Nations people that flag is absurd. It’s an obscenity,” she told 3AW.
