But Senator Thorpe, who is indigenous, said: “The Australian flag represents a colonial invasion, which massacred and murdered thousands of Aboriginal women, men and children”.

Has mzzz thorpe grasped just how shit her ‘nation’ was if 213 men dodging getting shot at by Napoleon were enough to overthrow her ‘mob”?

The First Fleet arrived here in January 1788. The French Revolution did not start until 1789, at which time Napoleon was still a relatively low level artillery officer.

We need to get the message out that you were not fully protected, particularly against Omicron, until you have three doses,” he said.

According to Mark Butler, the new health minister, we are fully protected against Omicron after having three doses. How is it then, that people who are triple vaxed are contracting omicron? The minister must know this but he still peddles the fully protected narrative.

The problem here is the vaccines were aimed at the original Covid 19 strain but the virus has moved on from there. They are banking on a vaccine that is obsolete. The original strain and most of the other derivatives have been crowded out by Omicron. They hang their hats on the lower sickness and hospitalisation threshold but that makes no sense. If it can’t stop you contracting and spreading the virus how does it mitigate the illness?

These clowns are having a lend of us but the fact that people are averse to getting boostered indicates that more and more are waking up.

I suppose it is too much to hope that it was just 80 frightbats repeatedly opening it or sending links to each other in a frenzied belief that this will get the guy tossed in prison without poor Britnee having to run the gauntlet of evidence. Look what happened to poor Amber Heard!

I never really watched Cheers but got the sense from Frasier of how much they needed to fill out and tweak his character. At the beginning of season one he still sported that unworldly academic mop and dressed in drab clothes – in contrast to his brother.

Before long they had him sporting Armani tuxedos, telling of the unique cocktail of oils he used for his bath, and swooning at the sight of shoes hand made by an obscure Italian cordwainer in some small town in Italy.

The basis from a mainstream point of view of rightful Aboriginal ownership of Australia (that is, excluding their mythology as we also exclude the Genesis story of Adam and Eve being given dominion over the all lands and animals), is that they were here first. Or, if they were not first they are the last ones who extant who enjoyed sole possession of Australia.

Apart from the fact that they were not a united people and squabbled endlessly over pieces of it. Within their tribes there is room for a hierarchy of possession.

But even the distinction between being the first people and being latest people still present does not give the same status as the second means taking possession of an occupied land.

If, just for the moment, the original people were not hunted down but merely out-competed then the claim to the land becomes that they were better able to benefit from it, exploit it, whatever word you want.

And I have some sympathy with this. This will have happened repeatedly in human history. As a principle it would seem to make no sense that a small group of people struggling on a piece of geography should prevent a people who would flourish in the same place, just because they were there before (not necessarily first). The displacement will of course be painful for the few, but it can turn out to be beneficial within a generation or two if the displaced are allowed to join and benefit. The Romans were good at this.

This is what we did too.

Finally, however, the fact of the matter is that ultimately people hold possession of land according to the force they can bring to bear. This underwrites all. Even in the case above the newer people will have to force themselves on the older inhabitants. If I can’t defend my land against those who come after it I will lose it. I can pine after it, lament the loss, sigh plaintively to the Gods that it is really my land – that there is a connection that no sword can cut – but the guys with the guns will stay there.

A happy story and a message – hammer the shop who says bad luck if your product fails.

Harvey Norman have been impressive with a warranty claim, even if Sharp convection microwave ovens no longer are.

The first one lasted over 10 years; the second around six, and the third two years and 10 months. It was well out of the one year warranty, but we advanced the argument that a warranty should match the $950 price – and Harvey agreed to fix it. Even though we’d moved interstate.

Unfortunately the process then stopped due to lack of parts. For some six weeks this was the state of play, and then when Sharp finally supplied the parts, the appliance couldn’t be repaired. So we were offered a new convection microwave of our choice. When Mrs TE pointed out the one she selected was a lot cheaper than what she paid, she was given a $150 gift card.

A sterling performance which brought a very frustrating experience to a happy conclusion.

Toad – I haven’t been keeping track of the indicators, but the last couple weeks there’ve been big loops of the jet stream up from the south. That’s what has brought the cold and the snow on the ski areas. It also has tended to push the usual high pressure systems north of where they’ve been lately, which probably has affected the SOI number. (And also caused the energy emergency because lack of wind.) This last couple weeks of decent weather has been very welcome though.

Veterans’ Affairs lost $430m after former minister forced to make cuts
Cloe Read
By Cloe Read
June 21, 2022 — 5.20pm

A Coalition member was made to cut more than $430 million from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs to offset money allocated in the budget, as the department struggled under a 50,000-strong compensation claims backlog.

Former veterans’ affairs minister Andrew Gee, who held the portfolio from July 2021 to May, told the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide that there was a clear link between the claims backlog and suicide rates within the defence community.

He said the department was struggling under limited staffing and the system was “crying out for reform”.

A report into the department’s compensation claims process found as of December 2021, there were 51,000 claims on hand, with 17,000 of those being processed.

It found the backlog was due to DVA being “unable to keep up with rapidly growing claim demand,” with total claims growing by 48 per cent between June 2019 and July 2021.

Despite the significant backlog and limited staffing for claims processing, Gee said he was made to cut $430 million to offset additional expenditure, which he said was counterintuitive.

“It’s like one step forward and two steps back,” the former minister told the inquiry.

“That was a big issue because that’s got to come from somewhere, and the department doesn’t mandate this, this is government.

“I was quite surprised at the magnitude of that, but I just resolved to cut the cuts and do what we could do to reverse them.”

When counsel assisting Peter Gray QC asked Gee if he was provided additional funding on the basis it “had to be saved by cuts to other areas”, Gee responded that he had no choice.

Gray suggested the $430 million was an “enormous amount” and “the equivalent to the annual cost of running the DVA”, to which Gee agreed.

Gee said it was only after the report into claims processing that the staffing issue came to light.

“I didn’t have any reason to think they didn’t have enough money. It wasn’t an issue that came up until [the claims report],” he said.

Gee said targets to address the almost 60,000-strong claims process “almost became irrelevant”.

“Because what’s the point in, you know, you look at it and you go ‘well, what good are the targets anyways’ because you’re not going to get within a bull’s roar of them,” he said.

Gee also said when he became veterans’ affairs minister, he did not think he was given a specific briefing on defence and veteran suicide, but he was “very aware of those issues”.

Saw the place where Andrew Symonds met his demise today. Covered with flowers and an Aussie flag flying.

Eastbound heading towards the city at Alice River crossing. No way could be suicide, a few deep creeks in the area and the road down the Harveys Range escarpment would be more certain. Driver falling asleep at the wheel or inattention much more likely. He was well on the wrong side and heading towards an embankment when the brakes were jammed on, black tyre marks still there. Also on moonless/cloudy nights can be very dark out that way.

Interestingly enough Government recently spent a mint on long winded roadworks that ended up with a few barriers and new signs but not much else. Seemed like a pointless exercise without including the badly needed widening of 3 old bridges there.

One of the worst realisations was if you propose parking outside your Airbnb you just might not be able to, due to the lack of spaces. And you might have to pay for it up to 9pm.

Top Ender, this applies to any airbnb in any world city. You have to check firstly that they provide parking and take no notice of statements that ‘there is street parking available’, because there usually isn’t. You pay a premium for a place with its own proper parking, but it’s the only way in cities if you are touring by car. And some of the so-called parking spots are humdingers, horribly tight for parking an SUV, which is what we had in Britain. We mostly tried for out-of-town cottages with parking (and even there it could turn out to be some impossibly tight area behind the cowshed) where we could drive in to the city centre and use parking stations for day trips. That meant we tended to either cook in-cottage or use take-away purchased in town and heated later, or there’d be the drive home after a city restaurant meal with a fair bit of local wine tasting and a fight (oh no, we never fight!) over who was designated driver this time. Of course it falls to me.

Lucky I am so accommodating. Today in our new conservatory room Hairy put up the black iron gold-embossed E11R plaque capped with a golden Royal Crown, sourced from a redundant Royal buiding. I bought it on impulse passing by an antique shop in Windsor. I’m putting it up mid-way along the wall he said, as he disagrees with me fitting wall pictures designer-style to ‘balance’ with the furniture. His way wins. Man with the drill.

From Daily Mail below. I did see somebody mention earlier that Wilkinson was a witness but that was first I had heard of it. Does anybody know how long after the event it was before Higgins spoke to Wilkinson ? Clearly it would have been a fair time after Higgins talked about it with Defence Minister Reynolds and a senior female staffer.

Defence counsel is going to have fun with Wilkinson as the conviction of the accused is clearly related to the highlight of her career. Him being acquitted will be bad for her reputation and take the gloss oiff the Logie. Her “evidence” is now biased in the extreme.

I find it incredible she is allowed as a witness and has been allowed to comment on the case so publicly for so long. The Prosecution should have silenced her once it was apparent going to be a witness. That she will be a witness shows how far they are going to convict him. Isnt the evidence from security staff and Defence Minister enough to support her case ?

Going to be a must watch case. However watch out for her trying to give evidence in camera and how ironic that would be.

Lisa Wilkinson was warned her Logies speech could jeopardise a rape trial but went ahead with it anyway before her decision backfired spectacularly and the judge delayed the case.

Brittany Higgins’ accused rapist Bruce Lehrmann was granted a temporary stay in the ACT Supreme Court on Tuesday after his lawyer said a jury trial would be ‘untenable’ following the reporting of The Project host’s winning speech.

Ms Wilkinson met with the Director of Public Prosecutions Shane Drumgold on June 15 to discuss the evidence that she would give at the trial.

At the end of the meeting, Ms Wilkinson was asked if she had any questions and mentioned she had been nominated for a Logie award, according to a note of the meeting taken by the DPP.

Ms Wilkinson expressed that she did not think she would win because it was organised by a rival network but proceeded to read the speech she intended to give if victorious.

Chief Justice Lucy McCallum told the court the journalist had previously sought advice on whether the speech was appropriate.

However, the DPP stopped her and advised that he had no power to approve or provide advice on the speech.

‘We are not speech editors,’ Mr Drumgold told Ms Wikinson.

Justice McCallum said Ms Wilkinson went ahead with her plans in spite of the warning.

‘Notwithstanding that clear and appropriate warning, upon receiving the award, Ms Wilkinson gave a speech in which she openly referred to and praised the complainant in the present trial,’ she said.

Justice Mc Callum said recent media publicity had prejudged Lehrmann’s right to a fair trial.

‘The case has accordingly attracted a level of attention in the media … that while not unprecedented, is certainly extreme,’ she said.

‘Extensive media reporting of alleged criminal conduct is not mischievous in itself.

‘What is a potential mischief is media reporting of such issues in such a way … it impacts the criminal case.’

Justice McCallum says while jurors can be given directions to mitigate prejudice, this case was different with Wilkinson being a key witness.

No date has been set for the trial, but the judge said she wants the trial to be held this year, with an October listing probably providing enough time for publicity to dissipate.

Earlier, Justice McCallum slammed Ms Wilkinson’s speech, saying the line between an allegation and the finding of guilt was ‘completely obliterated’ by her Logies speech.

Ms Wilkinson won a Logie for her reporting on Ms Higgins’ claim that she was raped in Parliament House.

On Monday, Mr Drumgold said the Logies speech was a ‘regurgitation’ of emotion, making the point that Ms Wilkinson had said similar things previously.

Justice McCallum said, in summary, Ms Wilkinson’s speech amounted to saying: ‘Not only do I believe her, but she’s brave and extraordinary and she’s the most important thing that’s ever happened to me and I’m proud of bringing forward her allegation

‘We know that the accused has given a recorded interview in which he denies any sexual activity took place,’ she said.

A previous stay application was dismissed by Justice McCallum in April, when she said she wasn’t persuaded directions given to the jury couldn’t alleviate concerns of prejudice against Lehrmann.

Mr Drumgold argued the second application constituted ‘a re-agitation of that order’.

The case was initially due to begin on June 6 but was delayed until June 27 after Lehrmann’s barrister pulled out days before the trial.

‘Controversial’ is such a beloved scare word on the left. It is meant to make people feel uncomfortable in their opinion, perhaps enough to make emotion cloud their thinking and fall in line.

Surely, what it really means is that an opinion or idea threatens upheaval in the status quo. In the case of the trans athletes the prevailing opinion in society already was that blokes in sheilas’ swimming costumes did not belong in women’s events.

The controversial opinion is to say that they do.

Wilkinson is prima facie guilty of Sub judice contempt having made a public comment on current proceedings. Being a witness for the prosecution aggravates any offence as does the fact the court has already made rulings about media and public commentary resulting in one previous application for a suspension of the hearing. She’s a fucking disgrace and she should at the least be heavily fined. Her testimony is irredeemably tarnished and if allowed to testify would be easy meat (sic) for the defence.

In fact that’s the mental age of all greens voters.

I think you underestimate the challenge of self-lobotomy; they have perfectly good minds – or did when they were born.

Wilkinson is so lucky she is not a pleb in a state district/county court.

The judge would have fucking annihilated her.

I would have as well.

Drumgold should start sharpening his pencils. He needs to start writing a new resume. Any defence Wilkinson would raise is dependent on Drumgold being incompetent or complicit.

I turn the map all the time. So do the St Hilda’s Cadets, I imagine. It’s part of getting a clear visualisation of the 2D – or if airborne or underground, 3D.

China’s food crisis is exacerbated by world environment, covid-19, floods and corrupt officials…

China Insights

As food prices have been rising over the past few months and Beijing has been feeling the pinch, part of the action taken by the Chinese government has been a massive arrest of corrupt officials, large and small, in the food system. The question is, will this work?

China has been having a systemic shortage of food. On the one hand, large tracts of good land have been polluted by industry or used as industrial land; on the other hand, the Chinese Communist Party’s policy of suppressing food prices has made peasants unwilling to grow food, and a large influx of peasant workers into the cities has left much of the arable land barren. Food has been in short supply forever.

To date, the government has already spent almost $13 billion on the metro link that will connect Chatswood under the Sydney Harbour through to new stations in the CBD and south-west to Bankstown.

Budget papers show the government expects the project to cost a further $5.1 billion over the coming four years.

And what did the Snowy River Project cost over all those years? Was there ever an initial Project Cost? If there was. I bet that the people just got on with their lives and didn’t much bother about it. However, having said that, I bet that the Project was far better run than the Sydney Light Rail and now the Metro Rail. Gov’ment Project Management with Public Works (now called Infrastructure) is now a lost skill and art.

Marxism says people must starve if the system cannot provide food. IIRC The Soviet Union allowed peasants to grow private plots of vegetables, and the 3% of land devoted to them supplied 30% of the USSRs food production.
OK, our government told us that so it’s probably a lie, but whatever.

Wilkinsons evidence, whatever it may be, IMHO is now compromised by the fact her reputation is so dependent on the outcome. I would think her evidence and how she responds to cross examination might actually be more harmful than helpful to the prosecution. Zero credibility.

Would have liked to see judge call her to Canberra to explain herself.

Just incredible.

A modest proposal.
Criminal and civil penalties should increase the more educated a person is.

Bogan mongs might get a month in the slot/ $5000 fine but a highly credentialed gender studies/ lawyer should face a year and $100,000 for the same thing.

Since we are apparently dismissing criminal contempt charges based on womens weekly mentions this shouldn’t seem excessive. Just fairer.

ACT Chief Justice Lucy McCallum said her judgement was made “through gritted teeth”, warning the line between allegation and a finding of guilt had been “obliterated”.

“The recent publicity does in my view, change the landscape because of its immediacy, its intensity and its capacity to obliterate the important distinction between an allegation that remains untested at law and and one that has been accepted by a jury giving a true verdict according to the evidence,” she told the court.

Ms Wilkinson is expected to be called as a witness when the trial commences.

The court heard Ms Wilkinson was given a “clear and appropriate” warning during a pretrial conference on June 15 the defence could launch a stay application in the event of increased publicity.

The accused might well have a case for a civil suit against Wilkinson considering she had defamed him very publicly (and she can’t feign ignorance) and, more to the point, the extension of time and added stress that accompanies it.

If he is innocent the wheels of justice will have ground slowly and crushingly enough, but to have the process more protracted by the wilful showboating of a journo in her own element then that is something else.

This is actually quite ridiculous. Was this Wilko tart there when the alleged incident happened? No, I didn’t think so. So, Wilko tart did an interview with the woman alleged to have been raped? Does Wilko tart work for the Police? No, as Wilko tart is a low rent Journo who should now be held in Contempt of Court. Wilko tart only has hearsay “evidence” which is not evidence in a Court of Law. Only in a Kangaroo Court. Case closed by the Wilko tart. Be off with you woman……………………

How many people do you get to speak to and how long after the incident is permisable for them to count as a witness. The first chance was when leaving building the next morning as by then must have realised something had happened. In view of the fact Defence Minister Reynolds was not very complimentary towards Higgins her evidence is going to be interesting.

I note no legal experts yet to express an opinion on this but I guess might further prejudice the trial if they come out on either side of this.

It does actually. They were ordered to accept females in combat roles by the high court. Rather than then claiming that females are equal to men as our stupid military does, they confined their employment to border patrol battalions. These battalions still have an operational role, however major combat operations are not included. Only all male units fight in Gaza or Lebanon.

From what I’ve read, the Isreali Army hasn’t used female soldiers on the front line since before the Yom Kippur war of 1973. There was an incident on the Golan Heights, when the Syrians first attacked. Taken by surprise, there wasn’t time to evacuate female soldiers as the policy called for, and the Syrians gang-raped and murdered them all.
