Not surprised. The ones I’ve visited are more boarding school then prison.
You can almost make an argument for buying a Jeep now. Most manufacturers have vacated the field. But not quite yet.
Apparently Kenworths are a piece of piss. Ample seating, too.
How much does it cost to get that added feature that precludes the need to stop for toilet breaks?
They did that for my mate when he bought his new Yaris (spit, choke).
Traded his Chrysler Crossfire SRT convertible in PRISTINE condition for the bloody Lego on wheels. His Misfire was one of just 75 sold in Australia. Toyota gave him $10k for it as a trade-in. On a Yaris! I almost cried.
And why did he buy a Yaris? Purely because it had Apple CarPlay …
Dealer fitted option. Likewise samosa holders.
JC, don’t worry about the cost of the car remote.
I’ll bet they don’t stock replacements and have to ship it in from Manchester.
When I took my car in for a service a while back, the guy points at the desk with my invoice and keys on it, “The lady before you needs one of those, and it will take 6-8 weeks from Chermany.”
“One of what?”
“The electronic key and ignition.”
The key was wedged in the ignition and wouldn’t move fully in or out.
No car for two months.
It’s not skiting, JC. There’s nothing very special about that. Like I never knew you were a day trader or that you had a New York apartment or a long-suffering wifey.
I share my life experiences here, just like you do, and we bought a new car.
They’re not riveting revelations. Just a good distraction for me from doing more important things.

Swapping my car over next week in Melbourne.
With an eight hour round trip, I better be gone in 60 seconds.
I don’t need no balloons or ribbons.
All ignitions are now by remote, so that worry is over. The one-before-last Audi we owned had that sort of ignition, push in to start. What could possibly go wrong? Our new car still has the slot for a push in lighter but no burner attached – too many cars still on fire with them, said the salesman.
Reminds me of nearly setting on fire a new Mercedes (owned by doctor I worked for in the 50’s when I was fifteen). I was with him when he went on a call, and idly pushed in the cigarette lighter. Then I couldn’t get the damned thing out. Smoke started to rise with a burning smell. The doc was very nice about it. He was a bit sweet on me. Married, twenty years older than me, and never did anything but enjoy my company. He found excuses to drive me around a lot to listen to all of his pig-shooting tales.
They liked quiet, industrious and admiring females in those days. I liked the Mercedes, but how the town tongues did wag.

Sorry Sancho – didn’t happen for husband when he bought a brand new Landcruiser 200 Series a few years ago. We had a wonderful 80 Series which finally gave up the ghost at just under 500,000km. It had the best seats we have ever had in ANY car (including Recaros) which were – & you won’t believe this – without a tear or “rub” after all those km around Australia.
Now – to the 100 Series Landcruiser, new in 2019 – husband cannot work the SatNav without being distracted from the road. It is hopeless, and the Dealer doesn’t dispute it. Similarly the radio. And the seats are just damn uncomfortable, compared to the ones in the old car. Now we are car “nuts” & have other “city” cars (& husband is a hobby classic car restorer) – so we are familiar with other systems & have less trouble – although the newer they are, the more troublesome is the digitalised stuff.
But the new Landcruiser was a big disappointment.
God I’m good at cooking steak.
Charred on the outside and medium rare to the cut.

On the subject of doggies…
I write this (with reservations) to shed an alternative light on veterinary advice and care.
Six weeks ago the family’s silly border collie/kelpie pup was run over on the new property. I won’t describe the immediate, traumatic scenario. It was as awful as you can imagine. With no after hours vet care available, #1granddaughter drove to Adelaide with devastated Son in Law in the back, nursing the pup, wiping the blood from its face and supporting its limp rear end.
The vet took an xray and offered two options: a $10,000 operation which might be successful, or goodnight for $1,500. SiL was too distraught to make a decision, so Grandie stepped up and said, “We’ll take him home and think about it.” The vet didn’t like that option and, after a gloomy sermon and a waiver, reluctantly let them go – without offering any pain relief or further advice.
Unsure how to care for a half limp, half alive little pup, Daughter phoned my 100% Aussie cleaner, who works only to help pay the $500,000 annual bill for her 90 horses and breeding whippets and labradors (currently 15 pure bred puppies.) She and her vet nurse daughter arrived with sympathy, expertise, doggy drugs and excellent advice: keep the pup in a small box/crate to ensure that he doesn’t move, and load him up with drugs.
Pup (Dudley) slept for almost a full week. After that, his miraculous recovery began in earnest. Within another week, he was sitting up, ready for dinner. A week or so later, he raised his back end to take care of toilets. At three weeks, he was whining from the laundry and when someone opened the door to check on him, he hauled himself out of the crate and dragged his limp back end out to sit by the fire.
Long story short: today he is up on all fours, happily greeting visitors and longing to escape the small enclosure outside where he continues to recover. His right leg is still rigid, but when given the chance, he runs/hops/gallops all over the place. All this, just six weeks after the awful accident.
PS: Daughter is comprising a letter to forward with a video of this happy, energetic pup, to the vet who would have charged $10,000 to maybe fix him, or to kill him outright.
PPS: My wonderful cleaner friend assured us that a country dog isn’t worth anything until he’s been run over at least once.
Might be about time for some sane heads to enter the room.

Got me wrong there, Sancho.

Eeewww. Sticky fingers. 🙂
The indigenous tribe in the Canberra region were the Ngambri, their last leader was OnYong who died in 1850. OnYong is remembered for his friendship with an Irish convict named Garrett Cotter, whom he guided to a river in the Brindabellas now known as the Cotter River.
My Lord, that is a wonderful ending for an all-too-common story on farms. Working dogs are generally smart enough to stay away from the wheels, but Jack Russells, for instance, often fall victim to such injuries.
It takes a lot of belief to take the route your daughter took – but what a marvellous result for the pup. Has made my day!

I’m not a day trader and never said I was such riff raff. They’re despicable people.
I’ve mentioned a few times we bought and renovated an apartment but nothing over the top.
You’ve been rabbiting on about this new car for 3 months. Also, please remind me. What suburb do you live again? I forgot. 🙂
And it’s even worse when you consider that Hungary is actively encouraging larger families (which might account for the bumper year in 2021). So, what happened?
My “all bells and whistles” Subaru was off the road for a month and I drove a Hyundai i30 rental.
I was very happy with the reversion to simple mechanical operating levers and buttons that resonated with muscle memory from cars of years gone by. No touch screen(s) confusion there.
And cheaper petrol too – Hertz advised me to use E10, which is a lot cheaper than Premium 98 which is allegedly “best” for the Boxer engine in the Subaru.

Lighten up, JC. We only decided to buy this car three weeks ago when we saw a model we liked parked in a street in Leichhardt, would ya believe it, to which awful haunt of previous lefty times we came back in order for me to see Downton Abbey (Hairy suffered it well) in the last place in Sydney to be showing it and the last place we’d ever want to visit. Just us and three pairs of lesbians in there.
Before that we thought we would thrash the older Audi into the ground first.
We can be impulsive like that. See something, get it, book it, or eat it.
We bought the first one we saw, in the only colour available. No messing around waiting.
Had two of these in the yard ten years ago. Blue for me yellow for the wife.

Apparently for the PT cruiser they had to get the front fenders made by some small time spare parts manufacturer because they no longer knew how to make that odd shape. Despite the fact that every car for a period of 50 years had a similar shape.

Great to hear about Dudley the Border Collie. If I ever got a dog he/she would be a collie, they’re just the best. I’m instant friends with walkers’ dogs when I’m out walking (and the walkers too usually). Alas I don’t like the necessary hierarchical nature of doggie politics, so will persist with currawongs and suchlike.
Most Liberal women in federal and state parliaments are complete duds. Think Julie Bitchop, the occultist Sussan Ley, Jane Hume, Amanda Stoker, the execrable Fiona Martin, the Obama loving Katie Allen, Marise Payne and on and on it goes.
I don’t mind Sarah Henderson but it’s slim pickings.
Anyway, the weather here in Wentworth is dreadful. Oxford Street was like a river tonight with cards literally floating on the water. So much for a better climate for Wentworth. Apart from the fact that Albo the clown is swanning around with another clown, Princess Allegra is strangely quiet about the weather and floods. Odd that, she had a lot to say earlier this year about the weather and floods. Skanky hypocrite that she is.
Actually, come to think of it, most women in politics are duds, be they Liberal, Labor, Green or Teal. I’m beginning to think that female suffrage has been a disaster for the world….and I’m a woman…so I can say that.
Thatcher looks more like a one off every day. Ronnie too.

Pronoun badges backfire for embarrassed banks
Steerpike – The Spectator
Pride month means only one thing: the chance for corporations to embarrass themselves with the latest right-on social media stunt. This year it was the turn of Halifax, which took to Twitter last week to declare that ‘Pronouns matter’ alongside an image of its new-style staff name badge, featuring the words ‘she/her/hers’ underneath. Other banks quickly piled in, with HSBC heralding this ‘positive step forward for equality and inclusion’ as ‘it’s vital that everyone can be themselves in the workplace.’
Unfortunately though, it seems that these citadels of capital forgot to ask one crucial stakeholder group in all of this: the customer. Halifax account-holders – many of whom are no-nonsense Yorkshire types – don’t take too kindly to being lectured by banks, those paragons of virtue. Since Halifax’s statement, the bank is facing a reported ‘mass exodus’ of customers, with some cutting up their credit cards. Others are lodging complaints about Halifax’s social media manager who, when customers accused the bank of ‘virtue-signalling’, told them: ‘If you disagree with our values, you’re welcome to close your account.’
Many are now, er, doing exactly that. The Daily Mail reports that more than 150 social media users said they would boycott the former building society. One account holder claimed to have already pulled out investments and savings worth £450,000 while many more said they are closing ISAs. To add insult to injury was the criticism of the bank’s former employee Howard Brown, who became a household name as the face of Halifax for over a decade. He branded the bank’s attitude towards customers as ‘disgraceful’, saying:
That’s not the Halifax I knew, that’s not the customer service I knew. If this had happened when I was working there, we’d all have been shocked and disappointed. It’s a service industry – you should leave politics to the politicians. They’ve got this one wrong.
As for HSBC, they suffered a different form of embarrassment. After the Asian banking giant began trending on Twitter, a number of accounts began highlighting the bank’s money-laundering failures and pointing out its role in abetting the Chinese government’s crackdown on Hong Kong. HSBC not only publicly backed the draconian National Security Law but also froze the bank accounts of prominent pro-democracy activists in exile at the behest of Beijing.
Ironically, HSBC’s involvement in the pronouns campaign therefore led to various Twitter users being made aware of the bank’s own stance on China – hardly a sphere where the bank’s liberal ‘principles’ have been much in evidence. Its chief executive, Noel Quinn, gave a lamentable performance before MPs last year, in which he could only bleat that ‘I can’t cherry-pick which laws to follow.’
True, though cherry-picking is exactly what Quinn’s social media team seem to be doing when it comes to promoting certain messages to certain audiences. Mr S suspects that the pronoun badges won’t be seen much in China, for instance, where same-sex couples are unable to marry or adopt, and where there’s been a push back in recent years on depictions of homosexuals and ‘effeminate men‘ on television.
Hardly a record that fills you with Pride.
Amazing how these commentators survive repeated analytic failures.
“What’s wrong with Stoker?”
Stoker supported that disgraceful senate censure motion against Bettina Arndt back in February 2020. A senate motion put up by two Labor bitches, Senators Wonk and Keneally. Stoker should have walked, she didn’t. I will never forgive her. Oh and the only two senators who refused to support that disgraceful motion were Pauline Hanson and Malcolm Roberts.
I’m glad that Pauline won the senate seat….not Amanda.
Apply it to the previous owners first so the dog at least gets a sense of justice out of it.

We used to have a neighbour’s old dog come and visit our dogs just for a “chat”. He was lame and nearly blind and the 5km trek must’ve been hard for him but every now and then he’d pop in, tail wagging while ours “ruff ruffed” their welcomes and played around.
He stopped coming a few years ago.

Well actually the Ukrainians were still defending the place this morning when I checked.
Russia tends to overclaim. Usually they get there in the end though.
The slow advance by the Russian Army implies serious losses though, you do realize that Dover? It’s a nearly WW1 western front campaign level: the Russians have artillery superiority but the Ukrainians do have a lot too, especially newly received long range tubes. In such an environment the losses are bad for both sides. It’s how it goes. The guy the Russians have found to general this campaign is doing the right thing, but he can’t emulate Brusilov because he can’t get the guys out of their tracks. It’s an infantry war and the BTG model is a panzerblitz war-of-manoeuvre one.
Stoker supported that disgraceful senate censure motion against Bettina Arndt back in February 2020.

Quote all fucked up — reverse quote/!quote and it makes more sense.
Well, you can do this.
There is this app (I forget the name).
You take a photo of your dog face on.
You then look into the camera on the phone or i-pad and record a message. The app converts your voice, mouth and eye movements and reproduces them as an animation on the dog’s face.
You can also play with the tone of your voice and disguise it.
The results can be hilarious.
“Are you sure:”
Yes I’m quite sure. Stoker later backtracked and apologised to Bettina…….BUT IT WAS TOO LATE. The damage had been done. Okay, okay, I’m beginning to think that the order to support that disgraceful Labor censure emanated from Scumbag himself….it certainly fits the pattern, given how he later treated Kelly, how he later cut off Porter, Tudge and Laming. It’s pretty clear that Scumbag wasn’t one to have the back of those on his own side but Stoker (and others) should have refused point blank to support that censure motion.
I’ve spoken about this with Bettina herself. I told Arndt that whilst she might forgive Stoker, I never will.
The slow advance by the Russian Army implies serious losses though, you do realize that Dover?
It might also imply that they’re not wasting their mens lives in rushing forward when the advance can still be achieved with time and artillery.
Sad. That’s how it is. I have an old currawong who comes each day. He has legs like tree trunks due to the mite infestation they get. Painful. With the east coast low he didn’t arrive last couple days and I thought he might have met his end. ECLs are a terminator for them: cold, wet. But he arrived today and accepted some food. Another day on the planet.
Mater’s Musing #50: Happy NAIDOC Week
ZK2A:
We have 145 armoured personnel carriers?
Do we have any left, you know, for Australia?
and in iceland the birthrate per 1000 people has been consistently declining by around one percent per year for the last four years.
Paying tribute to Ukraine’s “bravery and determination” in resisting the Russian invasion, the Prime Minister said Australia would provide an additional 20 Bushmaster protected vehicles and a further 145 armoured personnel carriers to support the country’s war effort.
Do they got the swastika’s painted on them before or after they’re shipped?
145 APC’s? A bit of googling indicates that we only ever had 431 M113’s.
So Albo had just given away roughly 33% of our entire APC compliment in this round of generosity alone….
Haha. Sorry Rick, but the only way they aren’t bleeding out is if they aren’t advancing. Even if not advancing they will be taking losses from Ukrainian artillery. The problem our guys found on the western front was to attack you had to come out of your trenches. It’s the same here.
If you’ve read about the Brusilov offensive you will know what I’m talking about. Monash repeated Brusilov’s tactics. The Russians aren’t doing that in this war, as their guys are trained as panzergrenadiers not classic infantry.
same source shows Sweden with a consistent annual decline per 1000 of around .25%
duncanm.
I saw your comment earlier and I did think they were talking about year-on-year variations.
Firstly, without putting the numbers through the sausage machine, a quick eye-balling of the numbers doesn’t look to show any statistically significant variation.
Secondly, as you say, what other factors might drive variability, particularly in the midst of the greatest social upheaval in a generation?
I guess what pisses me off is guys like Gonzalo Peso latching onto a simple variation and making a meal out of a crumb.
He’s either a dim bulb, or a grifter looking to build a contribution base.
We have 145 armoured personnel carriers?
Do we have any left, you know, for Australia?
431 – 145 = 286
Assume that we gave them only running ones and that there is 80% availability for ours.
We have: 228 operational…..
Happy NAIDOC week?
Didn’t we just do that?

Over 70 years.
Plus, the incredible volatility in birth rates as Swedish ‘whole of life’ social policies rolled out.
Even if not advancing they will be taking losses from Ukrainian artillery.
This is a two way rifle range.
The problem for the Russians is also a problem for the Ukes. Except, I haven’t heard many reports of Russian units being cut off and systematically pulverised into oblivion.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
If you drive south on Blackburn Road through Syndal, watch out for the red-light/speed camera at High Street Road southbound.
The camera’s recently been updated and I see now that there’s a 40 km/h zone from before the intersection. Sail through at 60 km/h as you’re accustomed, and you may get your picture taken.
I reckon the revenue shall rival the similar 40 km/h zone at Warragul Road in Holmesglen.

For unexplained reasons, Ms Olshannikova is certain she’ll have to go the full non-parole period without seeing her husband, though she said Boikov is looking to fight his convictions.
‘He has instructed his barrister to file an appeal to the District Court, thank you very much for all your donations, thank you very much for all your support,’ she said, as she paced outside the station.

If you keep complaining, you’ll get to dance in a loin cloth mid winter!
145 APC’s? A bit of googling indicates that we only ever had 431 M113’s.
So Albo had just given away roughly 33% of our entire APC compliment in this round of generosity alone….
Yes but he’s keeping all the important military supplies.
The nail polish, the high heeled shoes, and the videos of General David Morrison giving lectures on equality.

May have accidentally reported Mater at 9.14pm. My mistake.
People paying upwards of five grand for a dog?
Interest rates will be climbing back past 15% to get this amount of cash out of the economy
Mate has a X Lab pup he bought for $50. Can find dogs around if you want, was even vaccinated on sale. The rest was on him though.

Thanks Sal.
I had earlier thought that Aussie Cossack had brought it on himself by deliberately disobeying a Court order. People don’t get to pick and choose what laws they obey.
Ten months did seem excessive. Derryn Hinch, serial offender, never got more than 50 days. But of course unless one knows all the details it’s difficult to form a concluded view.
And I still think that way about the offence per se.
But to deny him visitors for 10 months as a “National Security Risk” is clearly totalitarianism which must be opposed.
Deserved for making me repeat NAIDOC week.
It’ll be clap sticks and a didgeridoo this time, not “The lion sleeps tonight”.
Rick – That’s only because you are reading Russophile sources.
They have been quite a few. Ten or fifteen BTG’s worth iirc. Maybe more, I haven’t been keeping close track for a few weeks.
This has been a bloody war for both sides. I think the losses are roughly 1:1, although it’s almost impossible to tell because of the propaganda from both sides.
The Russians have though found their mojo, which is WW2 level massed artillery on a narrow front. To do that they had to denude the rest of the frontline to concentrate on the SD zone. It works. The heat maps and mobile phone maps are fun: basically every free Russian is in the same place, except from a light defensive skin elsewhere.
Yep; still had some Marc stamping under the bonnet.
Went like shite off a shovel though. His, in the condition it was in and with the low mileage, would have been worth about $50k. And he took 10k …
Marc = Merc … bloody autocorrect

In the middle of the linked article, Sweden’s Migration Minister drops this little nugget:
He may be in for one helluva a shock if he’s of the belief that stopping foreigners from arriving in Sweden & finding employment will prompt the 200,000 Syrians to move into a job.
Looked at link Indolent put up at 6.21.
Found the Twitter page of Ralene Gotze whose daughter, 23, Caitlin died after 2nd Pfizzer jab. Had to take it to remain at work. Mother was told cause of death would likely be ruled as Undetermined although told had an enlarged heart. Saw her Twitter post saying Clive Palmer had donated $100,000 to their legal fund to fight for justice.
Well done Clive.

I have a rescue dog- $250 from the local pound in 2015. That included desexing and shots. Best dog I’ve ever owned. He’s sitting beside me now.

Add in a cowbell, panpipe and a lead singer and we have a full on popular music group.

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present to you the new Regimental Sergeant Major of the Australian Army: Warrant Officer Kim Felmingham.
A chick. The perfect appointment for an emasculated army.
I think BMW have been responsible for a few engineering disasters. Was reading about the V10 they dropped into the M5 a while back and thanking God I didn’t own one. Sounds like marking the end of warranty period on the calendar is time well spent,
Would give Fat Clive a ready supply of those crispy batter bits and used chip oil.
Rick – That’s only because you are reading Russophile sources.
I have mainly read French sources, but not many. In a war of attrition, Russia is most likely to win. I’m not a fan of either side, but particularly not the Ukes, there’s a lot wrong there.
My principal interest in this is watching our various idiot politicians throw our $ at it and degrade our already pathetic defence capability into the bargain. The APC gift is pure insanity. Australians should be outraged at this pure wank.
Ideally at least one Australian Politician would be ended by a Uke negligent discharge or Russian artillery shell during this farce. Maybe more if we got really lucky!
Does that mean that the days when a Regimental Sergeant Major was nine feet tall, spat flame from both nostrils, and could eat three lance – corporals, without salt, before breakfast, are gone?
Hot air. No substance.

People need to be compensated, and when the damage is all tallied up, those responsible punished.

Correct. Pauline is good but experience has made her very untrusting and she has developed an ego.
Ok here’s a bbq stopper.
Does the audience stand for Welcome To Countrys?
Answer from my obs is no, they don’t- but I’d say yes, they should.
It’s out and out a religious statement, what with the worship of the dead and indelible spiritual connection cited. So, stand up, as any Westerner does by tradition for a prayer, or singing an anthem- and the WtC has replaced the opening prayer.
If the proud “auntie”- (and I can report that that infantile honorific has now invaded SW WA) or shanghai’d schoolkid finds it a bit intimidating, then so be it, they’re assuming quite a serious mantle. And would they think that an audience really takes it as given- generously, or as being ticked off, or a combo of the two- if they don’t have the hide to stand, instead fidgeting and surreptitiously swiping?
The same was said re Mariupol even though what remained was contained and here its not even close. You can’t hide the speed with which Lisichansk and the westward areas fell to the RUS. It’s pretty much a clean up operation. Further, the UKR is outgunned 1:10 re ATY and their losses are probably in that order too. If it was 1:1 RUS wouldn’t be advancing now in a broadline westward towards Siversk and Bakhmut right now. Lastly, BTGs have plenty of ATY, and their mechanized, so they’re no different to CAV, and once you get out of the fortified areas, you can switch from positional to manoeuvre, because at some stage of attrition, their forces are going to lack ATY cover and they’re going to be vulnerable to exploitation.

Parallel to my thoughts on copping a haka.
Australians, or whoever, are obliged to sit, or stand, and watch, and not question, and not step over the imaginary line, and not applaud. And not laugh, or haka back, which would be par for the course in everyday sports sledging. It’s steamrollered normal manners and customs.
Welcome To Country has slipped in unopposed to Australian civil life, and a large part of anglostralian contrition has been letting it be because politeness.

Just landed in Brisbane, not bad for a planned 6pm flight out of Sydney. But hey that doesn’t stop the V airline giving us a NAIDOC lecture on landing. FFS , a man has his limits!!

Waiting waiting at Sydney for flight to Brisbane. 6pm flight cancelled, bumped to 8pm. Delayed. Then called for boarding. Waiting, waiting…. Then glass doors open, out comes the captain. I suggest he is going for a ciggy and a pint. Guy next to me says ‘I bet his hours are up for the day. ‘
Bingo! Now waiting for replacement Captain to fly in.
I expect I will be tasked with turning the Terminal lights out shortly so we can all get a good nights sleep here.
Must be due to all of that ‘far king’ rain again. Can’t be due to the Airlines or the Airport now can it. No, No, No, No, YES!

Paying tribute to Ukraine’s “bravery and determination” in resisting the Russian invasion, the Prime Minister said Australia would provide an additional 20 Bushmaster protected vehicles and a further 145 armoured personnel carriers to support the country’s war effort.
We have 145 armoured personnel carriers?
Do we have any left, you know, for Australia?
Took the words out… thought the same.
They need to be converted to left hand drive first. By the time that’s done, the ‘Police Action’ may well be over.
Anyone who watches Twitter videos is acutely aware of the fate of the first batch.
Well, of those that (post-fire/explosion) were in large enough pieces to be recognisable as a Bushmaster.

I held out as long as I could.
So fuck you, you whinging prick – let’s see how you go if you end up in a similar position (I hope you don’t – I hope no-one does)
I did what I had to do.
I didn’t like it.
I thought it was risky.
But I did it anyway – not for me, not so I could go on a holiday, but to keep the ones I care about alive and safe and well looked after.
You and no-one else’s “position” came into it. And why would it? Those I care about come first, and if that puts you in bad position, too fucking bad for you – deal with it.

Well, it probably took thousands of years, and was due to a few mavericks. Still, I wonder how the species ever made it out of living in caves, as I am confronted daily by what can only be a mental asylum at work, and Camille Paglia was close to the truth to opine that “if women ran the world we would still be living in grass huts”.
