I don’t think Trump will split the vote. He’s either the endorsed candidate, or he’s not, and he’s out.

If he concentrates on policies, and if Biden perseveres with Net Zero, the country will want Trump.

Biden, saying something sensible to actually lower tensions in the Ukraine/Russian war??

Poland missile ‘unlikely’ to have been fired from Russia, Biden says
US president says trajectory of missile suggests it was not launched by Russian forces waging war in Ukraine but will await results of investigation

Joe Biden has said the missile that landed in Poland, killing two people, was unlikely to have been fired from Russia due to its trajectory.

The US president was speaking at the G20 meeting in Bali, Indonesia, after convening an emergency meeting of western leaders do discuss the explosion on Nato territory that has the potential to take the war in Ukraine into a new even more dangerous dimension.

And thanks Liz. The numbers were pretty bad and I sent them to a respiratory doctor (who is my best friend) and he said “yup, almost a walking heart attack/stroke.” I’m happy to make a few lifestyle changes. Getting rid of ciggies forever fine. Getting of the Shiraz, just for a bit, that’s ok…

2nd order: What are the possible bad effects of doing so, and do they outweigh the benefits of locking down?

Answer is about here.

Europe faces ‘cancer epidemic’ after estimated 1m cases missed during Covid
Report says 100m screenings lost because of pandemic, which had ‘chilling effect’ on research

Experts have warned that Europe faces a “cancer epidemic” unless urgent action is taken to boost treatment and research, after an estimated 1m diagnoses were missed during the pandemic.

The impact of Covid-19 and the focus on it has exposed “weaknesses” in cancer health systems and in the cancer research landscape across the continent, which, if not addressed as a matter of urgency, will set back cancer outcomes by almost a decade, leading healthcare and scientific experts say.

“To emphasise the scale of this problem, we estimate that about 1m cancer diagnoses might have been missed across Europe during the Covid-19 pandemic,” they wrote in The Lancet Oncology. “There is emerging evidence that a higher proportion of patients are diagnosed with later cancer stages compared with pre-pandemic rates as a result of substantial delays in cancer diagnosis and treatment. This cancer stage shift will continue to stress European cancer systems for years to come.

“These issues will ultimately compromise survival and contribute to inferior quality of life for many European patients with cancer.”

The report analysed data and found clinicians saw 1.5 million fewer patients with cancer in the first year of the pandemic, with one in two patients with cancer not receiving surgery or chemotherapy in a timely manner. About 100m screenings were missed, and it is estimated that as many as 1 million European citizens may have an undiagnosed cancer as a result of the backlog.

At least 25 American flags on the stage behind Trump LOL, he’s going all out.

You can never ever have too many American flags when you are making a speech in America.
Huge flags fly everywhere, especially above car sales yards, and little ones crop up all over the place.
The flag is something else to Americans. You have to understand this. It’s sacred.

Chat with the doc on the way in this morning.

Those purple scooter you see around in some towns etc, are awesome.

Feraldton has them and its resulted in 70+ more wrist fractures than normal for the year.
Also the ethics of placing them outside the pub/nightclub in town is being called into question.
People too pissed to drive being provided with a means to hurt themselves.
Slugs and Grubs or any other legal firm should be all over this like a rash.

Apparently they had one young pissed lady brought in unconscious with an “exploded” collarbone and all she was worried about was because her phone was flat she couldnt cancel the charging function on the scooter hire.

Lots of extra medical cases from this ‘green” idea.

Doc says heart markers aren’t great and, if not attended to, would definitely result in some sort of CVD event in the “near future.”

As anyone with a working understanding of statistical inference can attest, no predictive-risk model of CHD/CVD can provide anything more than educated guesswork about the probability of an unspecified adverse event occurring at some unspecified future time.
What does p=0.4 of event X at t=2yrs mean?
Depending on the applicable distribution, it might mean a 50% chance of X happening at ~21 months.
This would make sense if applied to a large population (1000s) of individuals in the same risk-stratum and age.
But it makes no sense at the individual level, where a discrete event cannot be predicted, with any reliability, from calculations based on a continuous distribution.

This, as well as a basic understanding of Bayesian inference, which relies on disease prevalence in a specific population group, should be taught in high school, and would provide people with the appropriate level of knowledge necessary for an appropriate skepticism of most of the BS published in medical journals.

I would just ensure some regular exercise and weight maintenance, thus optimising insulin release response to carbs, and thus fat deposition. Your genes will determine the magnitude of success.

Lastly, something (almost) no doctor ever mentions: these days most mature-aged people in the West will end up with either symptomatic CHD/CVD or cancer.
Just enjoy life and pick your poison…

calli, based on the numbers in Indolent’s link it is one excess death in nearly 2000 people. How many people do you know? You wouldn’t expect to see any. Doesn’t mean the deaths aren’t happening.

Actually, I’ve seen several that could easily qualify but how can you be sure? One in particular was a great shock. Someone I worked with for years who suddenly just dropped dead. No prior illness or warning. Early 70s.

The sides are rapidly coalescing into Establishment Republicans backing DeSantis and the base sticking with Trump. I’d rather have my money on Trump in that fight, given how 2016 went down. I know that was six years ago but much the same internal party dynamics are in play.

There will be two lanes: the Trump lane and the Establishment lane. DeSantis will have to fight off the likes of Haley, Youngkin, Pence, Hawley, Cotton and a bunch of other losers who will drag him down. No one can challenge Trump in his own lane. No one is going to get to the right of him.

In The Signal and the Noise, Silver argues that the abuse of statistics has become so problematic that some are arguing it should not be taught. I think that is going too far but like yourself he is a strong advocate for Bayesian statistics. Long overdue, I even have a 1974 paper by Tversky and Kahneman arguing for the same!

The Nation Review article is churlish and is full of false assertions. This is one for example:
“A lesson of the midterms was that association with Trump and “stop the steal” were liabilities, and no one is more associated with both of those things than Donald Trump himself” In fact, those candidates endorsed by, or associated with Trump at the mid terms, had more than a 90% success rate. I got the impression that the article was written in a hurry and before Trump announced his run. So it’s already old hat.
I watched Trump’s entire speech and thought he played it well. There was only one shock for me; that he would introduce the death penalty for dealing hard drugs. He quoted China and Singapore as countries that don’t have a drug problem and went on to say that one dealer on average is responsible for 400 deaths in the US. I’m not sure about the death penalty, not because I’m squeamish but I think there will be blow back from the religious and wokerati. And I don’t think trump needs more enemies. On the other hand it might be bait for the Democrats and the Media to slather over, rather than focus on his other policies.
Trump’s hair colour was less orange than before, so he looked less aggressive. His presentation was energizing and he looked and sounded like a man who will win.

It initially had a guide of $4.3 million to $4.5 million in July, which was adjusted to $4.2 million by September.

I’ve mentioned previously that I ride an electric scooter (my own) and have been riding them for about 3 years or so. My scooter has substantial power and is capable of speed well in excess of the legal limit but having said that, they are an ‘acquired taste’ in many respects and are certainly dangerous for the foolhardy, even at slow speed. I often see people riding at inappropriate speeds (and accelerating) in circumstances that more experienced riders are well and truly backing off.

The Qld Govt have already reduced the speed limit for scooters on footpaths to 12km/h, and 25km/h elsewhere. I suspect the actions of a few will eventually see the footpath limit reduced further, maybe 8km/h in Brisbane CBD where they are especially prolific.

Biden Asks Lame Duck Congress to Quickly Expedite Another $38 Billion for Ukraine Plus $9 Billion for Big Pharma
November 15, 2022 | Sundance

The White House is urging Nancy Pelosi to utilize the lame duck congressional session and construct a massive omnibus spending bill that will wrap Ukraine funding, COVID spending and a federal budget extension via continuous resolution. The request for Ukraine funding is an additional $38 billion.

Federal funds to support FEMA and hurricane recovery efforts will likely be part of the bargaining chips. Essentially, the sausage ingredients are: if congress doesn’t give Zelenskyy more money, then DeSantis will not get federal financial assistance.

If you don’t support Ukraine, you’re a Russian operative.

Doc says heart markers aren’t great and, if not attended to, would definitely result in some sort of CVD event in the “near future.”

Lysander, I have just had a similar, depressing experience. After 3 years of Covid & no medical visits, GP wanted full blood count. All good except for total cholesterol – although the ratios of LDL/HDL et al all OK. This freaked her & she insisted on a Calcium Score. The latter showed some “calcification” of 2 arteries, which again freaked her out, although the risk assessment was “moderate”.

Cardiac opinion of issues of calcification seem varied. And the Calcium Score is a “risk assessment” only. Both parents lived to fair old age (even though one was a chain smoker until she died in her 80s), I get solid daily exercise on the farm, am not overweight and am in otherwise in good health as a result of a healthy diet and vitamin supplements.

Nevertheless, the GPs, with their forlorn faces & dedication to the herd beliefs, have the ability to convince you that you must see a cardiologist ASAP. Yet, I know damn well that the standard response will be to prescribe statins, which are highly controversial. Indeed, recently read an article which argues that there is scant data of acceptable effectiveness – certainly less than 10% improvement.

Ring the alarm boys, OZ Minerals (ASX:OZL) is in a trading halt pending the announcement of a change of control transaction.

And market speculation is already pointing to word of an agreed tie-up with the venerable old man of Australian mining BHP (ASX:BHP), which was callously knocked back by OZ in its attempts to secure the target for $25 a share (a tidy $8.4 billion) back in August.

The new deal would likely need to come in higher than that, with copper prices rising off positivity about China’s potential reopening from Covid and OZ’s shares trading at $26.30.

It is a level that suggest shareholders expect a larger payout for their stakes in the mid-tier copper miner, owner of the Prominent Hill and Carrapateena mines in South Australia’s Gawler Craton.

BHP has previously taken a hardline stance on calls from both OZ and analysts to present a more attractive offer, with Mike Henry again calling OZ “nice to have, not must have” at its AGM in Perth last week.

The deal would consolidate the major mines in that region for BHP, along with its giant Olympic Dam deposit, where it also produces gold and uranium.

It would also see BHP secure additional nickel feed for its BHP Nickel West business. OZ has approved the construction of the $1.7 billion West Musgrave nickel and copper project on WA’s border with South Australia.

A study on an extra step at West Musgrave, to produce mixed hydroxide precipitate for nickel sulphate battery suppliers, could be developed after the mine enters production in the latter stages of 2025.

The project would be one of the largest standalone nickel mines to be developed in WA, challenging Glencore’s Murrin Murrin and BHP’s Mt Keith operation for scale.

BHP has made copper and nickel the centrepiece of its plan to diversify from fossil fuels and bulks, even though iron ore and coal made make up the largest chunks of its earnings in FY22.

Trump is going to bash DeSantis, and I suspect DeSantis is not going to play his game… until he realises that he has to, as he will be losing support among the base. By then it may be too late.

It’s not as if the media is going to suddenly wean themselves off the Trump story. He’s too good for clicks. How can the likes of Carlson turn on Trump after all this time? Pretty tough to square that circle, particularly when Trump has declared so early. Carlson was obviously waiting to see what the base’s reaction will be. Firstly, Gilas – I don’t think there’s anything wrong with seeing some bad blood numbers and having a change of heart (so to speak). But I agree that much of it is beyond science at present. Family history, history and the way you’ve treated your body do count.

Vicki – No statins or anything like that recommended. Just a cut down in ciggies and a bit more exercise really, which never did anyone any harm…

The trouble is – that it is not just the GPs who believe the statin rubbish. My husband has less arterial thickening than I do – yet his cardiologist prescribed statins (which he doesn’t take).

But we have seen during Covid how difficult it is to battle with the medicos. What’s happened now is that the 4th place Republican, who endorsed Tshibaka and the Democrat will now get behind Tshibaka in the runoff and defeat Murkowski.
How long before Tshibaka patches over to the Democrats?
About 5 minutes after Trump loses 2024.
And she’ll still have 4 years of her term left and a D in the White House.

Off topic, but relevant to Victorians.
In the past two days I have had to explain to three Aussie born and bred people in their 50’s and 60’s what vote preferences mean. All three thought that a candidate that they preference as One can give their preference to another candidate. I explained that the preferences that the voter puts on the ballot paper is what is counted. They were stunned. I kid you not. Literally millions of people out there don’t know how our preferential voting system works. God help us in Sicktoria in 10 days.

Yes Eyrie – and my trigs are low. The only problem that I see, in my case, is the question of stress – which is not a good complement for a healthy heart. It is my weak spot. The millennial Drought, the subsequent Gosper fires, and now the floods (fences wiped out, though no loss of stock)- plus a strange series of adverse familial events – have reactivated my poor stress response.

It is annoying that the medical intervention is actually exacerbating the stress.

Minor party candidate who called for Daniel Andrews to be hanged preferenced ahead of Labor by Liberals

In a Twitter post from July, Ms Spelman said the premier should be “arrested, tried, found guilty and hanged”.

Footage of an anti-lockdown rally earlier this year appears to show Ms Spelman saying “I want to say hang Dan Andrews … but I know that’s not allowed”.

The Liberals’ group voting ticket – how parties allocate preferences on behalf of voters who vote above the line on the upper house ballot paper – puts Ms Spelman in 13th spot out of 56 candidates.

That can’t be right Dover. Zelensky said it was the Russians. He said it was an attack on all Europe and Poland should consider invoking Article 5 of NATO. There were a lot of retired Generals and other experts also saying it was Russia.

It was on the TV and the ABC and news.com.au so it has to be correct ……..oh, wait……so now it wasn’t fired by Russia? Whew, that was close, from the way Zelensky was talking, I would have sworn be wanted NATO to get involved.

He seems to have this vision of NATO forces sweeping across Ukraine and into Russia …… propelling Putin into obscurity (or the Hague, or death) and he (Zelensky) will emerge victorious from the Kremlin after a chastened Russian Republic has bowed to his omnipotence. Cardiac opinion of issues of calcification seem varied. And the Calcium Score is a “risk assessment” only

Actually it’s the opposite…. all* the traditional inputs to the cardiovascular risk algorithms (age weight, sugar profile, blood pressure etc) are, at best, indirect measures because NONE actually measure the presence of the disease itself

* I left cholesterol out because it IS NOT a risk factor at all – definitely re a d McKendrick and have Dover connect you with me if you want to discuss – I have had a calcium scan.

The calcium score, however, does actually demonstrate actual coronary disease because calcium is laid down inside the scars of the plaques themselves. There are plenty of people with high ‘risk factor’ scores but NO ACTUAL DISEASE, and vice versa.

Absolutely. Each of the 4 prosecution witnesses went first in order. Cops attended and arrested/took away for questioning the dead ladies husband and son.

Judge noted it for its irregularity and breach of good procedure.

He’s Back, President Donald J Trump Officially Declares His Candidacy to Run for President in 2024

November 16, 2022 – Sundance

I have written and deleted a thousand words, repeatedly, in an effort to encapsulate what this moment means to me, and perhaps to others. However, when you boil the essence of the thing down to its important part,

you are left with a question: Which American politician loves this country more than Donald John Trump?

The honest answer is ‘no one’.

There’s not a force of man or nature as strong in its devotion to a mission, as Donald Trump is to this nation. That’s the core, the heart, the genuine essence of the thing, that separates President Trump from all others. Within that love of country, is a strength of determination that is almost uncanny to witness; and from that love of country an authenticity emanates that is impossible to duplicate.

Donald J Trump is, quite simply, unapologetically American – and tens of millions just love him for it.

Tonight, with his family by his side, President Donald Trump announced his intention to seek the GOP nomination in 2024 and run for President of the United States.

Yes, I don’t give a flying flip what any detractor of this nation might try to say, Donald Trump is exactly what we need.

Many people are exhausted from the battle to save this republic. Many people are frustrated and despondent from the scale of the effort it takes to push back against the metastatic corruption that has infected our entire body politic.

Even more people are tired of having to constantly look behind the duplicitous motives and conniving schemes of the professional political class, and for those people Trump kneels and says, ‘get on my back and rest for a moment’.

Additionally, President Trump purged the conniving DeceptiCons, the duplicitous Republicans who existed to maintain the UniParty, by forcing the GOPe liars to expose themselves in his opposition. No longer is a conversation needed to convince people that most politicians are part of one DC UniParty apparatus. Two wings of the same corrupt vulture feeding on the carcass of our republic. Everyone can see that now, thanks to Donald Trump.

Despite their refusal to accept reality, the Bush, Cheney, McConnell, McCain, Romney Republican Party is gone. Donald Trump destroyed it. The Republican Party will never again be the Bush-Romney Republican Party. Donald Trump opened the door, and the working-class has moved in to take control. The Republican party is not going back to the Bush/Romney outlook, regardless of how much Mitch McConnell tries to scheme its return.

We need a Big Ugly wrecking ball to unseat the corrupt power structures that Trump alone made visible.

There is no other person in this era of our nation’s history with the capacity to do that. Only Donald J Trump has the energy and fortitude to carry out this fight.

I would not miss this opportunity for anything.

I’m all in.

Joe Biden Stages 30-Second Photo-Op Responding to Explosion in Poland

President Joe Biden gathered with world leaders at the G20 summit in Indonesia on Wednesday for a special roundtable meeting to respond to the deadly explosions that took place in Poland.

The White House brought in members of the media for access to the meeting, attempting to demonstrate that Biden was in control and leading the global response to the crisis.

Poland said a Russian-made missile fell in the country, killing two people, according to the Associated Press.

The hastily organized roundtable meeting at the location of the G20 summit was announced in response to the news, and the media was organized to mark the occasion.

While the press expected Biden to address the crisis, he did not, simply staring into the cameras for about 30 seconds before his handlers asked the press to leave.

When one reporter asked the president if he could reveal what he had learned about the explosions,

Biden replied simply, “No.”

No other comments

Fox News reporter Jacqui Heinrich speculated that Biden might have been unaware that he was expected to speak.

If Trump was no longer a threat to the establishment, then I assume he would have been unbanned from everything ages ago.

If he’s allowed back into the mainstream over the next week as if nothing has happened since 2015, then we’ll know for sure that they no longer fear him, that he’s a spent force, and they want him back as a spoiler to ruin everything for someone like Desantis.

I can’t see much of that happening, so I would assume Trump still scares the shit out of his enemies on the left and the right.

How to cut off your nose to spite your face. It’s a term little used these days. But, if your highest priority is to get rid of Andrews vote for the Libs. I know, hold your nose but it is the reality. Split your vote and it helps Andrews. Vote strategically and not with your heart. I’m not much enamored of the Libs but we need to get rid of this thug.

No Republican can win the Presidency.

My pas-a-deux Trump line is
“no, he’s not a nice person… but, by God, he’s right about everything. Everything.”

If being a “nice person” is a selection criterion, then that excludes Bill Clinton, Obama and Biden from the recent presidents, and also McCain, Shrillary and AlGore from among the recent hopefuls.

Last week he was attacking some Labor candidate who bought a Certificate of Aboriginality [titter].

Gina Rinehart spotted at Donald Trump US presidential campaign launch

Australia’s richest person, Gina Rinehart, has been outed as an attendee of Donald Trump’s latest presidential campaign launch courtesy of an inadvertent social media post by Eric Trump.

Mrs Rinehart, wearing her signature pearl necklace, is seated behind Eric Trump and his wife, Lara, in a selfie posted to Instagram by the former US president’s third son.

Donald Trump earlier on Wednesday used an event at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida to confirm he would run for president in 2024.

The iron ore magnate, who is estimated to be worth $US21.9bn ($32.4bn), appeared to have secured a prime position for herself at the launch, given her proximity to Eric Trump.

And while the most proximal seats at such events will typically be reserved for key financial backers, US laws prevent foreign nationals from making any kind of contribution or donation in connection with any federal, state or local election.

Mrs Rinehart has long had a close association with the conservative side of politics and has previously praised Mr Trump.

In a statement posted to the website of her company Hancock Prospecting shortly before Mr Trump was sworn in as president, titled “Gina Rinehart: Donald Trump shows us the way to succeed”, she praised his plans to reduce government tape and taxation. She also said at the time that she had met members of Mr Trump’s campaign team, including former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani and campaign manager Kellyanne Conway.

In Australia, Mrs Rinehart has long been a champion for the likes of former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce and speaking out against climate change “propaganda”. Her private companies have also recruited several former Liberal Party figures after they have left parliament.

During the most recent federal election campaign, Mrs Rinehart agreed to speak at a fundraiser being held by members of the WA Liberal Party’s Curtin division. The event caused divisions within the party – the Liberal incumbent in Curtin at the time, Celia Hammond, was in a fierce and ultimately unsuccessful battle with teal independent Kate Chaney – and was ultimately cancelled in response to the state’s growing Covid outbreak.

Hancock Prospecting was contacted for comment.

Lucky Gina.

Indo believes in climate fairies about as much as China does, seeing that they’re the biggest exporter of coal to China by far. When the Chinks became pissed off with us who do’ya think they went and talked with?

But Indo will cheerfully accept $20 big ones from the kafirs and nod, yes yes. Then once it’s gone they will sorrowfully say that cannot do anything more until they get another $20 billion. Of course they also will say ja ja to the Chinks. Taqiyya works just fine with the Han as with the roundeye.

I notice that when he met Xi Albo raised the matter of an Australian journo languishing in a Chinese prison.

More than two years after her detention in China, new details show that Australian journalist Cheng Lei has experienced tough prison conditions — and her health has also reportedly deteriorated.

Cheng, a former anchor for China’s state-run broadcaster CGTN, was reported as missing in August 2020. She was arrested in February 2021 when she was formally charged with “suspicion of illegally supplying state secrets overseas.”

In March this year, she was tried behind closed doors but an official sentence has not yet been released.

But another, better known case seems to have been sent to the memory hole. Julian Assange not mentioned in the meeting with Joe.
