Except that he agrees with the Moller Memo and was happy someone leaked it for him; Drumgold’s idea that police opinion of a complainant is “inadmissible” is some really sad shit. Just laughable.

In both my experience as a CMF CP clerk, and as a public servant in Defence (pre much wider use of email), formal messages were written, authorised, then sent.

Formal staid communication differs somewhat from realtime exchanges that happen on the fly.

Re the topic at hand: The …er… message to be sent would have been sent without resort to a written form.
Part of the reason for choosing it was that …er.. Fido-with-the-dark-hair…. is quite an easy one to send.

One of the issues with sleeping in late after signing off at 1900 the previous day is that catching up sometimes doesn’t happen until after others have posted stuff.

Possibly in War Plan Orange, under which the Philippines would hold out until the Battle Fleet arrived to smash the Japanese Fleet.

Edward Miller’s classic book “War Plan Orange” makes the point that, after 1935, the primary mission of the United States Navy in any Pacific War would no longer be the relief of the Philippine Islands. Douglas MacArthur, then Chief of the United States Army, was well aware of this when he assumed command of those Islands.

The other way to look at it is the Japanese were losing 10-15 times as many service personnel as the Allies were (I include our guys in PNG and DEI). Since Operations Olympic and Coronet were expected to lead to as many as 1 million Allied dead that suggests Japanese could have 10 million or more dead, if Japan itself had to be assaulted.

So 200,000 atomic bomb fatalities ultimately saved more than 10 million lives. Possibly a lot more if you count the land war still going on in China at that time.

The proportions just don’t add up.

The pre invasion bombardment by the USN was unprecedented and difficult to comprehend. 2400 x 16” shells plus thousands of smaller calibre rounds made Saipan a pin cushion of craters. Hiding was almost impossible and when the Japanese headquarters moved to a cave, the USN bombarded the entrance of the cave relentlessly making command decisions difficult at best for the Japanese.

I conducted an in-water unexplored ordnance survey for the deepening of the main harbour in Saipan in 1991 and was briefed by the USN in Guam on what we could reasonably expect to find. The range of munitions covered almost everything the US military could field at the time.

Dover Beach;

If China invaded Taiwan, would destroying the Three Gorges Dam be justified?
If China invaded Australia, would destroying the Three Gorges Dam be justified?
If China invaded anywhere would, destroying the Three Gorges Dam be justified?

No, no, and no.

Then the breaching of the three Ruhr Dams was a war crime, Yes?
Please show your working in the answer.
(Background – in the question above, the 3 conditions would be grounds for a Casus Belli so therefore a state of war is applicable.)

As all of us know, these frigging things take out avian species (including bats) at an alarming rate. Too bad those Green things (nor Governments) don’t give a damn about bird and bat depletion.

I keep sighting records for various birds. I also live within 5 km of an industrial wind facility. Regular pair of breeding Wedgies. Gone. Whistling Kites – numbers depleted. Yellow-tailed Black Cockies down from 15 regulars to 2. I cannot describe how these things disgust me. I pick up quite a bit of micro bat activity on CCTV – but overall, I can’t comment because we are not permitted to know the kill rate!

My little story wasn’t put there to say “yea” or “nay” about bombing civilians, just to illustrate the uncertainty and fear of the times.

There is always a tendency after many years to philosophise over rightness and wrongness of actions in war. To one, the mere thought of killing another human being is evil in all circumstances, to another, it is licit. In war the lines are blurred. Many have been imprisoned for conscientious objection, others have taken the “stretcher bearer” option. And others have embraced the idea of battle wholeheartedly, even to their own death.

For me, it is all still a great mystery.

Eddles on da Case says:
May 20, 2023 at 12:44 pm

Yep, that has not convinced me. I was a juror in a particularly gruesome abduction and sexual assault case in the ACT in 2015, Eddles. There was much, much legitimate evidence presented during the trial. This included: (Trigger Warning – adult concepts)
Video footage (including the abduction)
Text messages establishing motive (we also used them to gain some context and timeline of the events)
DNA evidence – this was the big one, gathered as it was the following morning, including swabs from the victim’s mouth, vagina and fundament
Testimony of police who established a timeline of events courtesy of the evidence, including the accused driving around my suburb while allegedly being administered oral sex by the victim – the only one of the eleven charges they got off, as there was no corroborating evidence – i.e. she said, he said, could not be established beyond any doubt – I think they did it, but that is not grounds

We found the two of them guilty of ten of the eleven charges (a twelth was dropped shortly into the trial). One of them is still languishing in the AMC, while the other, recently released has been shipped back to Inja.

Six days of my life wasted. The other jurors, to their credit, appointed me foreman, so there was no time wasted deliberating, which the Canberra times noted, stating that we delivered our verdict after “only one and half hours”. I worked the other jurors like pack dogs, so we were ready to administer some swift justice. My fellow (ten)* jurors included karens, middle aged white wallies, an Injun, an aboriginal and a nineteen year old goil (she was traumatised by the recounting of some of the testimony and rightly so)

BTW, the abduction took place at my local shopping centre, so I had to buy my groceries elsewhere that week.

* Rares, J. decreed that the trial would proceed with only 11 jurors after a karen juror fled the courtroom upon hearing the charges – thanks again for that, you soft stupid fat cow.

Try this thinking Bruce – Japanese deaths during an invasion of the Home Islands:

Total of predicted Japanese fatalities resulting from a conventional invasion of Japan,
November 1945 to December 1946

Caveat: the death toll could vary from that arrived at here through all sorts of factors: sudden surrender in the forces abroad after encirclement by the Allies, especially if their communications were disrupted; revolt and revolution within the Home Islands; surrender after the first phase of the two-part invasion strategy, and more. Nevertheless, each section here constitutes a reasonable analysis and totaling of fatalities.

Type of person dead Cause of death Number dead Notes

Japanese Army within the Home Islands Combat and refusal to surrender 2,232,500 Based on the Pacific island defence campaigns, at a 95% KIA rate. See explanatory note below. From a total of 2,350,000.

Japanese Army in the rest of Asia Combat and refusal to surrender 3,277,500 Based on the Pacific island defence campaigns, at a 95% KIA rate. See explanatory note below. From a total of 3,450,000.

Japanese Navy Combat and refusal to surrender 1,166,963 Based on a 99% KIA rate from a total of 1,178,750. See explanatory note below.

Militia Combat deaths 240,000 From a total of 4,000,000, assuming a 30% casualty rate. 1,200,000 casualties, with 1/5 KIA.

Co-opted armed civilians Combat deaths 1,680,000 From a total of 28 million, assuming a 30% casualty rate. 8,400,000 casualties, with one in five being fatalities and the others wounded.

Sub-total – combat deaths 8,596,963 Total combat force of 38,127,500.

Civilians dying from lack of food Operation Starvation, and Allied naval blockades 14,000,000 Seven million by mid-1946 would continue at a million a month dying from starvation by the end of the invasion in December 1946.

Sub-total 22,596,963 Total of those already in the forces and those dying from starvation

Civilians Collateral damage 5,282,754 10% of the population left over would have died – that is, 5,827,537 from the population of 72,147,000 – given predicted Allied Rules of Engagement.

All Japanese deaths 27,879,717 Total resulting from a conventional invasion of the Home Islands lasting until the end of 1946.

A nest of endangered brolgas is near a proposed wind farm at Brewster

Mem,
I’d very extremely careful with those arguments as they’re essentially similar to those being used by the green left with respect to the use of coal etc.

Pretty much everything in human activity has trade-offs. In other words there are costs associated with human action. The green left argue that the use of hydrocarbons are costing us a worsening climate and air pollution. I’m not making this argument, but explaining what theirs is. It’s bullshit when we consider the benefits accrued to humanity.

Some on the Right are now suggesting bird life is at risk, which is specious because the trade off is small compared to our need for energy.

Make the argument that wind mills are a useless to provide energy for an industrial civilization, which is the one true line of argument to take against these meatheads.

To put a turbine in deep water requires huge amounts of concrete, drilling and general disruption of the sea floor.

And then there’s the cables. And maintenance – anyone with any marine knowledge knows that a stationary object will deteriorate through encrustation and general salt attack. And then there’s the maintenance of the mechanism itself (useful life 20 years at best). And then there are the cables, the on shore transformers and transmission lines.

It’s environmental insanity, dreamt up by charlatans and spivs. Yes…that is what your local “Sea Shepherd” or “Wombat Man” or whatever is.

I don’t think it narrow, I think it nebulous
it does have a place … it’s just that that place is only ever post-hoc

Eyrie’s, point goes to the heart of the matter:
you can spent years inconveniencing civilians to death, or you can just get the job over and done with.
moralizing comes last

where was the moral justification for war in the first place?
I’ll tell youse.
It was never about morals or ethics, it was only ever about Law, or the power to make it

Biblical Timothy’s “God will recognize his own” is often re-written as “Let God sort them out”

Bud Light mocked for $20 rebate on $19.98 case of beer: ‘They’re giving it away’

A Bud Light seller apparently stuck with too many cases of the unsold brew in the wake of the company’s Dylan Mulvaney fiasco is offering $20 rebates on purchases of a $19.98 case of beer.

A photo posted to social media shows stacks of 24-can cases of Bud Light with a promo taped to them touting a full rebate from the unidentified beer vendor

“Things can’t be going great if they’re basically giving it away,” Twitter user Ed Latimore wrote.

“You’re making two cents profit per case when you buy Bud Light,” another Twitter user observed.

“And there’s still plenty on the shelf. They can’t even give people money to take it off their hands!”

Sales of Bud Light, the nation’s perennial top-selling beer, have tanked following calls for a boycott of the Anheuser-Busch brand in the wake of its controversial partnership with the transgender influencer on April 1.

Nationwide retail sales of the brand were down 23.6% versus a year ago in the week ending May 6 — its fifth straight week of declines, according to Bump Williams Consulting and NielsenIQ data.

Any pretence of a Soviet victory over Japan is a folly. Remember, the Allies from the Great War signed an Armistice with The Reich in 1918, but kept a Naval Blockade of Germany for another 2 years.
That saved many Allied lives even though a million Germans starved to death.
The Versailles Treaty gouged Germany too.
There was no reason America couldna ended the War 2 years early, except for War Profiteers making a killing.

Yesterday an irate friend rang me. She teaches at a private school here in Sydney’s east. She said that she arrived at the school yesterday and the there were posters spruiking the Voice all over the school and in classrooms.

Today I went to the ballet. I’ve been attending the ballet for years, always the matinee session on a Saturday arvo, and always with my sister. Ballet audiences, like opera audiences (which I occasionally go to with my mother) are a certain demographic, the men and women who attend the ballet emanate from the north shore, the eastern suburbs and the inner west. Anyway, we sit down, excited to see the production, and before the curtain is raised, the female conductor of the ballet orchestra stood up and said “we are on Gadigal land”, and then she said “we stand with Stan Grant“. I nearly fell of my chair in shock, my sister nearly sprayed her bottle of water over herself in shock, however half the audience cheered and clapped, the other half sat in silence. My sister and I, once we regained our composure, were and remain furious about this political statement at the ballet. However, I noticed the Asian woman on my left, sitting with her two very cut daughters, both very cute in tutus, didn’t clap or cheer, however the Anglo women in front of us cheered loudly. Australia 2023. As I wrote a day or two ago, it will be elderly Australians (those who aren’t being tasered), rural Australians and the new migrant Australians who may well save this country.

Oh and I don’t stand with Stan Grant.

Interestingly while in Hiroshima I found a gum tree. It survived being only 740m from the hypocentre.

Tough critters , eucalypts. My palatial nest box tree got beheaded several years ago after it knocked out my electricity feeder once too many times. I was fed up. Decapitated it about a metre above the nest box…whereupon it resprouted and is doing fine. It might turn into a Port Jackson fig since there’s a solid fig sapling in the notch just behind the nest box.

I was up a ladder to check out the box today. Cockies have been chewing it. It’s now so old that the hexnuts have rusted so I couldn’t get it off. So instead I screwed in some big wood screws to firm up the connection to the tree, since it was getting very wonky. Maybe the kookas will nest in it this season again, even though it now looks more like a rough shack than a salubrious penthouse. If the Cafe is ever nuked the only thing remaining will be that tree.

The terms of the Treaty of Versailles were light on Germany,

The Armistice was agreed to end the Great War on the same borders and Rules as it had started.
Meanwhile, Revolution had broken out in Germany and the Allies swooped like Jackals.
The Versailles Treaty was imposed on Germany, the Germans had no say.
For example, Germany lost territory to Denmark, Czechoslovakia and Poland were created out of German Provinces and France marched Senegalese Troops into the Rhineland in 1921 and stayed for 15 years.
Then there were the reparations, which Germany eventually paid off in Gold.

America also required the British to pay War Debts for supplying what were essentially Mercenaries.
Britain repudiated the Debt in the 1930s.

The main problem with renewables in regard to fauna and flora is the sheer number of installations required to produce such a meagre return.
These sites all need bare ground and cleared paths for lines running to the grid which involves clearing every bush and tree in the way.
Albo’s 20,000+ kilometres of main line is only a part of the actual easement clearing that will take place. The big grid plan would require roughly 200,000 hectares of treeless land alone.

It is interesting to muse on whether war *is* an illness in of itself, or a symptom of some other malady.

If the former, regarding it as a ‘public health problem’ (something to be stamped out early and at all costs) is valid. If the latter, such eradication attempts will be futile.

Given the repeated failure of ceasefires to eradicate wars (Korea, Gaza etc) I suspect war is closer to a symptom than a disease.

The US made the point that the use of a chemical, biological, or mass armoured attack was the equivalent of a nuclear weapon in terms of their reprisal. Which makes sense really. A nation of 25 million is not going to have the manpower capabilities that a nation of 1.5 billion would have. Therefore they need biological or chemical weapons to level the field.

War is what happens when memeplexes collide. If one memeplex controls a nation, and if it contains the meme that members of that nation are intended to control and/ or enslave members of any other nation, then war is inevitable. Not necessarily a shooting war, those are rather inefficient and old fashioned, but a war.

This is absolutely correct.

What one person enjoys with their grog is not connected to what another person enjoys with theirs.

A person who enjoys their JW Red is not having an inferior experience to someone who prefers Aberlour Cask Strength with branch water (as the Americans call it). There is not some remote place in the universe where one person’s taste is being objectively compared to another’s.

When I drink the drink I like all anyone else can see is my rolling eyes and lolling tongue. They don’t actually experience my taste.

My Dad loved him a Chivas Regal. I remember seeing him take a long sip, ease back in his chair, let his eyelids descend like light at dusk, and exhale softly with extreme contentment. As much as anyone might hope for. Nothing ‘inferior’ or ‘less refined’ there at all.

Sure thing, I used to do this to good effect when Insurance companies did not pay our client’s compensation monies for months I would do just that and at the time the statutory rate was 9.5%

I recall a legendary legal eagle, many decade ago now, whose client had not been settlement monies for many months and despite many requests for payment, the solicitor went through the process and ended up having a winding up order issued and served it on the insurance company – hilarity ensued and the money issued tout suite. Remember this was many years ago, they’ve probably made it illegal now, because of course nowadays it’s insurance companies that run the world we live in.

Weren’t you running a similar fairytale about Lord Alister McAlpine getting a series of defamation payouts a few years back?

Old McAlpine went to water when someone stood up to him.

Cite you an ANZAC Day service that began with a “welcome to country.” Two of the local veterans walked out, and it was years before I went to another one.
My sentiments exactly. Veterans should generally be the ones organising or I would hope, being consulted, about the agenda for ANZAC Day and as such it is more than disappointing that there are some amongst us who have drank the coolade.

I have built a small veterans memorial for our local community in country Tasmania and hold a local service whenever I can on ANZAC Day. Encouragingly we had more than 50 there this year and you can rest assured that there is no ‘welcome to country’ component to our services.

If there was I would also leave and not return.

Have you heard about Martial Simon, a 61 year old homeless man from NYC who had mental illness? He was a repeat offender and was out on parole for armed robbery.

In 2022 he was harassing patrons at the subway station and threatening them. No one did anything. Everyone stood by because they were more afraid of the cancel mob than this lunatic. He walked behind 40 year old Michelle Alyssa Go and shoved her in front of an oncoming train. She died at the scene.

@AOC did not attend her funeral. She did not get a golden casket.

Nope Dick Ed. McAlpine died in 2014, shortly after he’d won several cases against such high profile people such as George Moonbot and Sally Bercow, both of whom had to pay damages to a charity of McAlpine’s choice.

Searching for a reference, but by memory Nimitz’s commentary related to the capacity of the Fleet to maintain support in the face a sustained Kamakaze assault.
The context was the revelation that intelligence sources believed that the Japanese military still had a reserve of 5,000 aircraft of all types.

A quick search found this.

https://www.nationalww2museum.org/war/articles/victory-in-japan-army-navy-1945

The key words:

“The intelligence revelations were a godsend to Admiral King who was always determined to prevent an invasion of Japan in accord with longstanding navy convictions. King had advised his JCS colleagues in April that he only assented to issuing a preparatory order for OLYMPIC to ready the invasion option by November. But he pointedly added they would come back in August or September to reexamine whether an invasion was necessary. He also knew the senior Naval officer in the Pacific, Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz, at the end of May had privately informed King that he could no longer support any invasion of Japan based on the Okinawa experience.”

Another extract, relevant to discussions today:

“King’s alternative strategy was the Navy’s long preferred one of blockade. It was the most ruthless strategy Americans contemplated in 1945. The blockade explicitly aimed to cut off food supplies and kill millions of Japanese, mostly civilians, from starvation. Atomic weapons then available lacked the power or numbers to kill by measures more than thousands. Critics of how the war ended quote statements by Naval officers that the war could have been ended without atomic bombs. What the critics do not disclose is that this alternate means to end the war aimed to kill Japanese by the millions.”
