That has taken serious hits in recent decades with most now admitting there is some type of consciousness there. Google it, many fascinating studies there. That or buy a dog. Dogs, like individuals with William’s Syndrome, are loaded to the hilt with oxytocin and in both humans and dogs oxytocin is a hug hormone.

Yeah, John H. I haven’t read studies about it. I’m of the opinion that self awareness is also related to spatial awareness in the context of where and how say a dog fits into it’s environment. Animals are certainly spatially aware and therefore to a large extent self aware too probably.

Some of this self awareness is missing in humans though. You quite witness the absence by certain people on this blog. ?

JC you are channeling a paper by Danish neuroscientist who argues that motor functions, which requires spatial awareness, are fundamental to cognition. It’s lost in my archives, I should dig out for another read.

Consider homeschooling or a private tutor; even the elite, C of E grammar schools swallow woke garbage like a foie gras duck.

The other alternative is distance education. Home schooling or private tutors are expensive alternatives and in Queensland (and probably other jurisdictions) there are very specific requirements on the quality and training by the tutor imposed by the Education Act.

We have recently enrolled Miss Speedbox in distance education although we live in metro Brisbane. Our other kids attended public and private schools but we have become disillusioned. Most recently, Miss Speedbox walked out (!) of a school-wide address in the assembly hall where one of the teachers was lecturing on the ‘normalness’ of cross-dressing, blurred gender lines, being ‘whoever or whatever’ you feel. Another teacher followed Miss Speedbox and asked why she left the hall – when she explained she doesn’t agree with what was being said the teacher responded with “your home life must be awful”. WTF!!!

Needless to say I hit the roof when told but Miss Speedbox begged that I not do anything as it would make her school life very hard with the teachers. As it happens, many of her friends said they wished they had the ‘guts’ to walk out but didn’t dare.

So, I swallowed a very large lump and reacted differently.

By the way, in this same school, the girls toilets are considered a ‘safe place’ and teachers don’t enter. Students as young as 12 routinely vape in the toilets and God knows what else happens. I do know that some others identify as cats and walk around meowing including (occasionally) in class – and all tolerated by the school.

When we moved to Brisbane from Adelaide over a decade ago we chose the suburb to live in based solely on the academic results of the nearby public schools. We ensured we were in the catchment area and the schools were, by any measure, some of the best in Queensland, public or private. Now….. the overall school academic scores have been in gradual decline for the past few years and the woke brigade are increasing their influence.

Well, not on mine they’re not. We’re out of there.

The bar (88 mph) had 100% CCTV coverage and this doesn’t show any last minute loading, or any suggestion of spiking.

Actually, from what I saw I’d say at the end she was holding two glasses, one a small glass and one she was swigging from, a bigger one, which looked to me like topping up on water ready for the next round.

These young girls often do that.

I wonder if they look for high oxygen concentrations are evidence of microbes in distant planets.

John – They don’t have the resolution yet, not even with James Webb. I did see a paper a few weeks ago where it was claimed a gas was detected in the atmosphere of a planet, but it was pretty iffy. Methane I think, in that case. The idea is to watch an eclipsing planet as it passes its star and do spectra for the absorption lines particularly as it comes out of eclipse. Extremely difficult given the timing and that the star behind the atmosphere is so bright. Like picking out a needle from a million haystacks.

There was another paper on the second direct imaging of an extrasolar planet. Of course that and the first one were both Jupiter sized, as you might expect, and hot enough to radiate in infrared. But the message is they are getting there slowly, although detecting molecular oxygen is probably a step too far just yet. That what it looks like to me anyway.

West Coast Coolers and Cold Duck are amateur hour compared to Ben Ean Moselle, a nonpareil leg opener, when only the best would do.

Yes, I would agree that Ben Zean moselle was highly effective, but at $4.99 it was a tad pricey.
West Coast Cooler delivered far better results on a $ for $ basis.
The downside was the more fruity WCC varieties tended to stain if rebounded (not unlike the Cadbury Favourites).
Ben Zean was far more benign if you had a chucker on your hands and worried about staining your Miller shirt.
There’s probably a doctorate in there somewhere.
Or maybe not.

All the afghan winesses were paid by nein. BRS’s comrades (sic) who testified against him had previously expresses jealousy and disgruntlement.

Speedbox earlier.

100%. Well established that a person who is ‘schoolies level shiffaced’ cannot give informed consent. Therefore, anything that is alleged to have happened ‘must be’ sexual assault and drunkenness is a handy foil for fending off uncomfortable questions. (at worse and if the accuser is shown to be a liar, she ‘misremembered’ due to the fog of alcohol.)

Quite so.
It is a neat lowering of the consent bar to avoid any question of “did she, didn’t she”.
Too pissed.
Slam dunk on consent.
As you say, this is also doubles as a very cunning smokescreen for awkward “misrememberings” … but only to a point.
When the “misrememberings” and revisionisms pile starts to stack up too high, a jury can quite legitimately start developing reasonable doubt as to the core story.
Which it seems eleven of them did.

John – The one I’m hoping for is a direct image of the planets of Proxima Centauri. It is our closest extrasolar star at 4.25 ly away. So far they have found three planets they think. One is the size of Earth, another about twice the size of Mars and a tentative one about half the size of Neptune. The first two appear to be in the 0-100 C temperature zone. I’m sure the astronomers are keen to get a picture if they can, and it’s nice to know that there’s useful real estate next door, even if it probably isn’t especially salubrious.

It was important for Higgins to impress her incapacity on investigators and jurors. Trouble is, although not sober as a judge, she’s not incapable either. This thing was workshopped within an inch of its life as tapes from Wilkinson et al show.

Can we get past that “feminism” shit now? It has misled and dudded women, casting them into the modern role of galley slaves – in business instead of (allegedly) at home where they are close to and caring for the most important people in their lives, their children. Simultaneously it made them critical of their husbands – who recalls the “male chauvinist pig” thing from the 1970s?
It has helped destroy the family and subsequently the middle class.
The tactic of destroying the middle class is not new, it goes back to the Marxist-Leninist era.

That any legal officer can say that about evidence undermining the judicial process must be a joke. Or it’s a total lack of self-awareness on the part of the person. But then again we have the recent cases such as Pell, BRS and Lerhmann which say that evidence is no longer important or even desired, allegations rule.

The total abrogation of even a scintilla of parental responsibility.

I think Matrix still loves his daughter very much, JC, and even you have said you have a ‘problem child’ as most of us do, because nearly all kids have their problems one way or another.

Parenting is hard and I think Matrix tried but got a really bad deal with a woman who was woke to the hilt and encouraged the daughter in all sorts of nonsense.

I’m sympathetic, not because I think I was a perfect parents for I was not, but because I know from my experience how when a woke parent does woke parenting and you are the other half of the child’s life, there is a lot of difficult tug of love going on with the child.

Congratulations to Cassie of Sydney for correctly identifying that the Britanny Higgins farce was part of a carefully planned strategy by Labor to win the 2022 federal election, with the 100% complicity of the news media, by using it to smear PM Scott Morrison’s “women’s problem” – a non-existent propaganda invention to deflect from Labor’s vicious “mean girls”.

As expertly outlined tonight by Sharri Markson on Sky News, Lisa Wilkinson was the self-appointed campaign co-ordinator who enlisted then opposition leader/now Prime Minister Elbow and front-bencher Tania Plibersek (a.k.a. the Slovenian Hag), now federal environment minister, to front the campaign by leading the questioning of Morrison in federal parliament. Hopefully, I’ll post a video later.

Britanny Higgins need not have existed, except as a useful idiot in the Labor smear campaign.

Almost as a footnote, the reported $3 million payment to Higgins before anyone is convicted of laying a finger on her is to be investigated by the new federal Independent Commission Against Corruption.

You watch. The unelected Australian Deep State will find a way of justifying it and she’ll keep the lot.

What the hell does the judge think a defamation case is?

“On balance” one would hope a person who had suffered actual damage from accusations might want some form of reparation.

I hope he appeals and wins. As for the judge, I wouldn’t wish a malicious accusation is ever directed at him. No siree. That would be unkind.

I’m with BRS all the way. They sent him into a dirty war to kill, and he served his country well.

Unfortunately, the only way BRS can now be cleared is for the government to charge him for committing murder and war crimes so that the ‘evidence’ can be thoroughly tested before a jury to decide beyond reasonable doubt whether he is guilty.

Until such time, BRS is entitled to the presumption of innocence irrespective of his civil defamation case being thrown out.

Not that I want to become involved in anything beyond my own struggles at the moment (which we of course, all endure), but the allegation of ‘beating up women’ against a commenter here is a serious one. If a commenter has evidence of physical violence inflicted by the targeted individual, this should, where practical, be referred to the relevant authorities.

If the allegations do not refer to physical violence, I suggest they risk doing a disservice to potential future victims of physical violence – female or male – by diluting the definition. Use instead another term, such as harassment, or stalking (if you think this justified).

Please be aware that although you may feel confident and psychologically self-assured, not everyone may share those positive attributes.

Dunno about you guys, but in engineering I am observing a considerable experience gap between the late boomers, gen X to the millennials. I believe the gen X group of ‘experts’ who had the proper training is relatively small primarily due to Keatings recession and corporations reluctance to invest in training, which means less millennials are trained properly. Now many of the late boomers are retiring taking with them the big share of the experience that was not passed on properly. Engineering in Aus is in a death spiral that will not be fixed by importing even less experienced foreigners. What say you?

It’s time to remove these so-called elite units. Their members often come to believe their own hype – promulgated by the ADF – that they are a type of super soldier.

Every frontline infantry unit should be trained to, and capable of, the same high standards. Of course, there should always be specialist units, but none should be regarded as superior to another.

I have a friend who served in the regular Army in East Timor during the transition period. He attests to the sense of superiority amongst the elite units, and their condescending attitude to the regular infantry.

BRS’s comrades (sic) who testified against him had previously expresses jealousy and disgruntlement.

Bit hard to reconcile this with Hizzona’s statement:

It is inconceivable that they even had a motive to lie.

Hmmm, let’s look at this:

During that battle, Person One’s machine gun stopped working because he’d failed to bring oil to properly lubricate it. He conceded in court it was a mistake: “I should have taken oil with me on the mission.”
Following the mission, Roberts-Smith approached him & told him “[redacted – lots of really hurty words were spake here by Corporal Smith, expressing how displeased he was to go into action only to discover the hard way that his comrade hadn’t bothered to bring gun oil & thus was not providing the promised machine-gun cover.]”.

How did this he-man SAS soldier take being told he’d made one helluva rookie blunder, placing the entire patrol at risk?
Did he own up & resolve to do better?
Was he embarrassed at being so stupid & placing his comrades lives at risk?
Nup, he dobbed BRS in to the brass for calling him names.

Having told comrades of the comment, he was encouraged to report it to his commanders, which he did.
After the complaint was received, Roberts-Smith [displeased at being dobbed in for expressing his displeasure] threatened him again, approaching him in the mess line, standing close and leaning over him. [redeacted – due to lots more really really really hurty words used by Corporal Smith]

How in the heck did Hizzona Bespanko conclude that it was inconceivable that any of those fellers giving evidence had an axe to grind against BRS?

What is the chance of this??

School bus driver dies after horror crash with two camels in central Queensland (Sky, 5 Jun)

A man has died after the school bus he was driving collided with two camels on a rural Queensland road.

The 40-year-old was driving down Emu Park Road, a regional road with no streetlights, on the way to pick up students in the early hours of Monday morning.

He collided with two camels at the junction between Emu Park Rd and Thompson Point Rd which caused the bus to spin out and go down an embankment.

He sustained critical injuries as a result and died at the scene, Queensland Police have confirmed.

The two camels also died as a result of the incident.

The crash was located close to camel farm The Big Camel, and it’s believed the animals escaped through a broken gate along the property’s fence line.

Two camels escape from a camel farm, wander onto a road only to get hit by a busdriver, who dies. What is the probability of that? Ok you can roll snake eyes sometimes, but this poor guy has just done so five times in a row.

Wally – thanks. Every parent knows the difficulties of raising kids. Mrs Speedbox and I don’t have a secret formula but believe that kids become better adults if they are ‘questioning’. That doesn’t mean rejection of everything that doesn’t fit your initial perception – because there are genuine reasons why some seemingly poor/unusual/silly things are accurate or necessary. Listen to what is being said but ‘things’ are often not as they first seem – there is often something else going on in the background. Challenge the orthodoxy, with respect. Prepare your own thoughts and don’t be swayed by the crowd. Be informed and if you’re certain of your position, then stand up and say why. If you’re wrong, own it, but don’t be scared to set down your opinion. And learn!!

To Cats, this would all seem perfectly obvious and is a creed that most live by. But sadly, it seems to be a diminishing feature of the broader community. The willingness (indifference) to meekly accept the patently ridiculous political and media pronouncements across a vast range of topics is both bewildering and concerning.

Over many years I have seen Cats raise concerns or queries on countless matters long before the MSM or the general public have even woken up (if at all). In my opinion, the Cat is a treasure and offers insights, opinions and resources that are simply unobtainable in many other forums.

Mrs Speedbox and I have merely tried to replicate the Cat’s modus operandi in our kid’s minds.

On a separate post here not the open thread Matrix opened up a lot about his distress at what had happened to his daughter going trans. I really felt for him. There’s an article in the Oz this weekend that shows how parents, mostly the mother in this case, can get done over by the progressives re trans issues when parenting.

You have to have been through something like this to comprehend how it drains you, f’s you over, affects any new relationship or other children, ruins your days and your nights as the teens play up, use drugs, shit on you, and the cops come round or they are injured. Aussies on death row granted clemency

Two Australian citizens who faced the death penalty in Vietnam have been granted clemency after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made representations to his Vietnamese counterpart during his visit.

“There was a substantial breakthrough with the granting of clemency just yesterday for two Australians who had been sentenced to capital punishment. I made representations to the Prime Minister yesterday morning and by yesterday afternoon the President had signed the clemency orders,” the Prime Minister told ABC’s 7.30 program.

“Australia very much welcomes this. Australia has a strong position of opposition to the death penalty and we make representations on behalf of Australian citizens and we are very pleased that Vietnam has agreed to the request and we thank them for it.”

Mr Albanese said his visit to Vietnam had “provided an impetus for this outcome”.
He also said the families of the two citizens had been informed and were “very relieved”. He did not mention their names for ‘privacy reasons’.

They came from journalist Lisa Wilkinson, the “girl from the western suburbs of Sydney” who’s pulling in $1.7m while not working at Channel 10.

In audio played on the show, Wilkinson tells Brittany Higgins she is fighting for the “inequality that exists out there, whether it’s white privilege, whether it’s male domination, whether it’s, you know, criminal activity that is suppressed”.

Wilkinson had clearly made up her mind that Lehrmann was guilty of rape, way before any court convicted him.

Her comments lay bare her motives: cementing her status as someone fighting for the everyday woman rather than an arrogant millionaire A-lister.

Wilkinson also wanted to lock in Higgins’ tell-all interview for her low-rating show The Project.

This is one of the incidents tat caused me to suggest a few days ago that the SAS and Commandos would be better off if reduced to sub-unit size and being much more selective in who is accepted into the group. Even a basic recruit trainee would be unlikely to make such an error, much less complain about being reprimanded (in whatever language) for the error.

Dunno about engineering, but I don’t doubt it. That goes for medicine too and probably many other disciplines. Maybe not for O&G and the niche medical and surgical specialties or those dealing with “diseases of the rich” but certainly general practice which will probably disappear in a generation of so. Medicare and the self serving treachery of the RACGP ensured that would happen and the only surprise is that it took so long.

My point was a little more nuanced.
I don’t lay total blame for the failings of the offspring at the feet of the parents.
But I think it displays a lack of maturity and self-awareness to not consider the possibility that you may be a contributor to what you perceive to be a failing.
I get sick of hearing parents blame addictions, criminal behaviour, lack of work ethic, failure at university or school, whatever on extraneous influences.

Inspirational posters – I had a unit commander, who had this one, on his office wall. Supposedly from the Duke of Wellington, dated August 1812.

Gentlemen,

Whilst marching from Portugal to a position which commands the approach to Madrid and the French forces, my officers have been diligently complying with your requests which have been sent by H.M. ship from London to Lisbon and thence by dispatch to our headquarters.

We have enumerated our saddles, bridles, tents and tent poles, and all manner of sundry items for which His Majesty’s Government holds me accountable. I have dispatched reports on the character, wit, and spleen of every officer. Each item and every farthing has been accounted for, with two regrettable exceptions for which I beg your indulgence.

Unfortunately the sum of one shilling and ninepence remains unaccounted for in one infantry battalion’s petty cash and there has been a hideous confusion as the the number of jars of raspberry jam issued to one cavalry regiment during a sandstorm in western Spain. This reprehensible carelessness may be related to the pressure of circumstance, since we are war with France, a fact which may come as a bit of a surprise to you gentlemen in Whitehall.

This brings me to my present purpose, which is to request elucidation of my instructions from His Majesty’s Government so that I may better understand why I am dragging an army over these barren plains. I construe that perforce it must be one of two alternative duties, as given below. I shall pursue either one with the best of my ability, but I cannot do both:

1. To train an army of uniformed British clerks in Spain for the benefit of the accountants and copy-boys in London or perchance.

2. To see to it that the forces of Napoleon are driven out of Spain.

Your most obedient servant,

Wellington.

Further to the point about parental accountability for your children.
If you claim you have zero accountability for their perceived failings, what you are really saying is, “I lived in the same house as this young person for 16/18/20 years and nothing of what they have become reflects the values I tried to impart.”
That would be a tragic admission of failure.

A US nurse upturned the traditional understanding of how we mature. Her argument was that as children enter their teens the peer group can be just as influential as their parents. I don’t know if that argument has held up(it is ~30 years old) but most parents are well aware how a peer group can change a child’s behavior. Tough luck for those parents whose children have limited socialisation opportunities. The most recent striking example of this is the influence of social media flipping the typical trans of MtF to FtM.

There are other issues that can influence a child’s behavior, some of which are completely beyond the control of parents.

Popcorn all around the country must be sold out as the story gets better. Latest Janet A article from the Oz.

Five days after Brittany Higgins’ rape-allegations interview aired on The Project she wrote an angry letter to host Lisa Wilkinson accusing her of putting together a second program based on footage not used in the first, without her knowledge or consent.

Ms Higgins writes that she is “disturbed and disappointed” that after making it clear she did not want another program “you would have gone ahead and put one together anyway”.

In the letter from February 20, 2021, obtained by The Australian, Ms Higgins threatens that if Wilkinson “goes ahead and still airs this material knowing how strongly I am opposed to it, then I will be forced to issue my own media statement (and this email) making clear that I wrote to you and asked you not to do it due to me fragile mental health, but you did it anyway.

“I don’t think that helps either of us.”

On Monday The Australian revealed Ms Higgins and Wilkinson war-gamed how to recruit prominent politicians and media figures who could help give momentum to their upcoming interview on Network 10’s The Project, as the TV host made suggestions to the former Liberal staffer about how to frame her story.

A segment on Seven News Spotlight has aired that shows
Lisa Wilkinson was recorded preparing Brittany Higgins to go public
The more than five-hour session, which also involved Ms Higgins’ boyfriend David Sharaz and Wilkinson’s producer Angus Llewellyn, was recorded on January 27, 2021, a few days before they filmed the interview that was broadcast on February 15 revealing Ms Higgins’ claims that she had been raped in Parliament House.

In her letter to Wilkinson after the program aired, Ms Higgins says: “It’s so wonderful; to hear that this story has resonated with the Australian public and I’m personally so heartened by their support.”

However, the friendly tone soon disappears.

“As I discussed earlier in the week with your producer Angus when I declined his approach for a second interview, I do not want to participate in any further media interviews at this stage,” Ms Higgins writes.

“The pressure has been impossibly intense and there has already been severe consequences for my family, David and myself.

“While I understand that you do have the contractual rights to my original interview, I was never told at that time that you would air more than one programme detailing my assault.

“I am therefore really disturbed and disappointed that when I told Angus I did not want another interview on this matter, you would have gone ahead and put one together anyway based on footage you filmed for the initial interview but did not use.”

Ms Higgins tells Wilkinson that she is not coping and that any more attention at that point would just exacerbate her stress further.

“You have been very good to deal with to date but I feel used if more material goes to air because again, as I have said repeatedly, I do not want to appear in any further media interviews at this time,” she writes.

“I issued a statement recently about not commenting any further on this matter due to my imminent formal investigation by the AFP. This is set to occur next week and is my primary concern at the present time.”

A week later, after a further exchange between the pair, Ms Higgins writes to Wilkinson again saying that she has only just watched The Project segment, and that “I just couldn’t do it until now.”

Ms Higgins agrees with Wilkinson that “there are more details about the subsequent conversations that may be of merit”.

“As long as you don’t bring (former prime ministerial staffer) Yaron (Finkelstein) back into the piece I’m happy for you to proceed. I just don’t have any proof of his involvement and it became a major stress point with the press gallery over the past two weeks,” she says.

The Australian revealed on Monday that in their pre-interview session Ms Higgins likened Mr Finkelstein to the ruthless House of Cards character played by Kevin Spacey. “I’d liken Yaron to like, Frank Underwood from House of Cards,” she said. “He is like, he’s the PMO fixer. He is that guy.”

In her second letter to Wilkinson, Ms Higgins asks “if you would consider including something about why I came forward that would be wonderful. I’ll leave it in your hands.

“It’s your call if it’s in the public interest now.”

I recall that study, John H. At least I recall reading it in the New Yorker when the magazine was 25% sane around the mid-90s. The central theme you suggest is somewhat correct in that parents (read adults) begin to lose their authority as kids become teenagers. However, the argument was that kids begin to pay more attention to their peer groups—in other words, kids of the same age. That means they begin to cut not only the parents’ apron strings but other adults as well. This would obviously include teachers.

That’s not what some here are suggesting, though. They’re suggesting that “schools” (i.e., teachers) have the capacity to turn kids into raving queers. That’s just unadulterated crap, and anyone suggesting that ought to be laughed off.

Woke had a different name in the 90s, which is partly when my kids went to school. Then it was called political correctness. I recall our boy coming home and laughing about a white teacher telling the class that he was a recovering racist and that, as a way of assuaging his guilt, he decided to live among blacks in Harlem. He told us how the other boys were sniggering about it after class.
Our girl went to an all-girls school. To be honest, we/I witnessed far more PC at the boy’s school than the girl’s. The girl’s school blabbered on about how girls could do anything they wanted if they put their mind to it. That was about it. Perversely, I tend to think girls at all-girls schools are safer than boys at all-boys and also co-ed schools. It’s just my opinion.

Interesting that they were discussing Julie Bishop having no friends, and Britnah and Cane Toad are having a stoush a week later.
At the point Cane Toad said (paraphrasing) “Not trying to put words in your mouth but how do we say Parliament House is full of Liberal Party lechers?” Britnah should have known that she was merely a vehicle for The Bandana Axe-Grinding Machine and would be discarded when the mission was complete (or failed).
