They were masters of their own country – by which I mean the area that a clan group had occupied for a very long time. Whilst such associations, and the skills developed, may have declined since pre-Settlement, they continued to have the ability to read the landscape and relate to the countryside in ways that Europeans could not.

I don’t think anyone argues against that – they surely were masters of living off their lands… but to pretend they spent 65k years inventing anything is hogwash.

They couldn’t move beyond spears and thrown sticks. That’s stone-age tech.

So there was written language.. its just ‘secret’, mkay.

No, no written language, of course. But symbolic drawings, engravings and such, told stories that their people understood.

Although there is some scorn to be read on this blog…..these people lived, survived for many thousands of years through an elaborate kinship system with caste rules, and an intimate relationship with a hostile terrain.

I agree with those who rightly ridicule the idiot claims of people like Pascoe and others. Social anthropologists – particularly the early ones – understood the truth and did not obscure the reality of the subsistence life of these hunter gatherers.

Outrage as Anthony Albanese pledges $100million of taxpayers’ money for Vietnam to tackle climate change amid cost of living crisis: ‘We need help here’

The way these things usually work is that the money has already been earmarked or is otherwise available.

Not that that justifies it in this or other instances that might ber deemed more worthy.

James McAuley had a very good piece on this in a long ago issue of Quadrant.

Agreed. They did not settle and create pottery and other utensils, though the material was there. Nor, despite Pascoe and others, did they “farm” in the accepted sense of planting crops or domesticating animals for food.

In a week or so I’ll be enjoying myself in Wales looking at some neolithic tombs, all aligned to the sunrise on a particular day of the year. Just remarkable.

My visit to Glastonbury to view the abbey and other sites will be after the solstice, thank goodness. Like the corpse in the ceiling, the whiff of hippies will have dispersed. I don’t want to stumble over a high as a kite body at Merlin’s Well.

Most people forget (or don’t know) that they saw great advantage in befriending settlers. The most desired item that they received from settlers (and the government) was actually blankets. Sad, no? And, of course, sugar, flour & other products of the white man were all welcome.

The continuing revelations by Sharri Markson of Sky News tonight based on leaked text messages in the Britanny Higgins conspiracy are fascinating.

Higgins wasn’t just a useful idiot in Labor’s 2022 election campaign to bring down the LNP government: she actively conspired with ALP activists including the infamous Emma Webster to accept a temporary ALP policy job to tide her over financially during the hit job she was authoring on the LNP government.

Brittany Higgins was a political double agent getting a salary from the LNP government to bring down the LNP government. She was working for the ALP on an LNP work contract.

She was no innocent babe in arms who was raped by a barbarian, Bruce Lehrmann. That fiction was entirely invented by Higgins, with assistance from Emma Webster and Lisa Wilkinson.

Lehrmann deserves many millions of dollars compensation to make up for the attempt by common criminals in the politics business, including Britanny Higgins, Emma Webster and Lisa Wilkinson, to destroy his career and professional reputation.

I’m not challenging anything you say, but the preference for blankets, flour and sugar doesn’t sit well with the suggestion of a vast frontier war. Without doubt there were fights, but not on anything like the scale claimed by Henry Reynolds and the other revisionist historians.

In these parts the redcoats in Moreton Bay were called upon to pacify some indigenous resisters harassing settlers making their way up the Great Dividing Range. Veterans of the Napoleonic Wars, they made short work of it. No war was declared and no battle honours were awarded. Today we’d call it a police action.

What, pray tell, is so wonderful about surviving in a spear-thrown, hunter society which lived in caves if it could find them? Good on them, but millions of humans in similar societies did it for thousands of years.

Whenever they could, such groups moved on to a stage B, of not having to follow animals for food, and built more technically advanced societies with some agriculture thrown in; houses, small townships, and fixed defences. if they could they domesticated animals for meat. Some built roads, and the wheel was a major jump forward – it enabled carts, wheelbarrows etc. The ability to make and contain fire was a similar big step.

Then followed much more elaborate arrangements: the Egyptian pyramids; Stonehenge-types yearly calendar structures, stone temples, and so on. Much more advanced farming; sea travel, etc etc. Advanced mathematics and other associated disciplines were part of this,

Nowhere do Aussie Aboriginals seem to have moved past stage 1 to further progression.

All the players were more than comfortable having a young man ruined and imprisoned for political gain.

The crowd of youngish drinkers in the bar that Friday night would have to be the most delusional bunch of disgusting operators this side of the used car yard in Black Stump. Each would be convinced of their own importance and their own smarts. Even the Liberals among them voted Labor or Green. They would be devoted to ‘shaping a narrative’ and making their boss look good because that’s why they’re there. Even now there will be young suits in Gallagher’s office and Albanese’s office working on a plan, ringing journos, planting stories and writing copy, rigging surveys to help deny, distract and contaminate Dutton. Lehrmann is nobody. Give me the man and they’ll give you the crime.

Greens appear to have a violence/race problem..

https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/blak-greens-group-chat-spat-spills-over-into-airport-clash-20230523-p5dah7.html

Greens senator Dorinda Cox is considering pressing charges against a former Greens Senate candidate after an airport incident that sparked duelling federal police complaints and underscored tensions over the party’s support for the Voice to parliament.

The flare-up between Cox and Tjanara Goreng Goreng last month came after former allies of ex-Greens senator Lidia Thorpe “expelled” Cox from the party’s influential First Nations group known as the Blak Greens.
An official police complaint obtained by this masthead shows Goreng Goreng, the party’s ACT Senate candidate at the 2022 federal election, made a report to federal police three days after the episode on May 6.

In Goreng Goreng’s version of events, the Canberra-based Greens member ran into Cox, a West Australian senator, in a Perth airport queue, where the senator berated her and asked who provided permission for her to come to the Indigenous country Cox hails from.

Goreng Goreng, an academic and former public servant, said she was brought to tears and Cox had “deliberately decided to humiliate me as retribution for the [Blak Greens] rescinding her membership,” according to her police complaint.

However, a spokesperson for Cox said Goreng Goreng grabbed and shook Cox in a “very serious incident” that the senator referred to federal police and Greens leadership. Cox has reserved her right to press charges.

Sleazy and his government will try and follow the Daniel Andrews’ template. They’ll do their best to ignore all of this, such is their arrogance. I reckon that’s the plan. I hope I’m wrong and Gallagher is the first scalp but, I don’t know, we’ll see. You see Sleazy and his comrades have watched how well this tactic works in Victoria, where a pathetic and spineless opposition is unable to inflict any damage on the venal Andrews and his corrupt government. Now, whilst I doubt the federal Liberals are as bad as the Victorian Liberals (nobody and no party could be), I am yet to pass judgment on Dutton as to how he is playing this or yet to play this. I have never underestimated Dutton, and nobody should. He’s a clever politician. The left have been trying to get rid of him for over twenty years and they have failed every single time. He has their measure. I’m glad Dutton has finally spoken up today, and sure, he needs to be careful, I suspect he and others in the Liberal Party have decided in the interim to let the media do their work, these stories are massive click baits for the media and it gets the story out there. Of course, their ABC will keep it submerged.

As Senator Malcolm Roberts said last night on Sharri, this was all designed to bring down the Morrison government, and it worked a treat. As someone has written on C.L.’s blog today, Morrison was riding high in the polls in 2020, particularly among women voters. Labor became desperate and so a nasty poisonous spell was cast, and that was to smear Morrison and the Liberals as having a “women problem”. It began with the ABC’s resident smear merchant Louse Nilligan and her hatchet job, “Inside the Canberra Bubble”, followed soon after by the Knickerless story and then the ridiculous Porter allegations. Morrison, always inept, and always desperate to curry favour with his enemies, was caught off foot. Whilst I don’t think Morrison has or had any political scruples, and quite frankly I despise the man, however to paint him, a man married to the same woman for thirty years, a woman he genuinely loves, a father of two daughters he adores, as some kind of misogynistic rape apologist isn’t just preposterous, it was outrageous, and then to compare Morrison to Shorten and Sleazy and their private lives, well, I think anyone with a modicum of common sense and decency can come to the came conclusion, which is that Morrison is a paragon of virtue compared to Shorten and Sleazy.

Nowhere do Aussie Aboriginals seem to have moved past stage 1 to further progression.

They had a collectivist, authoritarian society. These are always hostile to innovation. If an individual does something creative, he or she gets no reward, benefits are shared out, with the old men getting most of them. The innovater soon learns that it wasn’t worth the effort, and the rest of the tribe also learns the same lesson.

As a way of freezing a culture, collectivist authoritarianism is unbeatable.

As a way of freezing a culture, collectivist authoritarianism is unbeatable

So how did other Neolithic societies make the leap to farming? I understand early farmers probably had a lower quality of life than hunter gatherers for much of the time where both coexisted. The Australian aboriginals certainly didn’t have much to work with but seemed to make little use of the limited opportunities for trade. I have never done much reading in this area.

So how did other Neolithic societies make the leap to farming?

Because a primitive sense of private property in some societies meant that if you had the insight and energy to plant some crops, when they grew you got to eat them, and you weren’t expected to share them with everyone else.
This can be copied by others of an entrepreneurial cast of mind. Before you know what, everyone’s a farmer.

Wild guess: The domestication of animals meant that having such food (meat and milk) and other products (skins, incl. for trade) closer to hand allowed a little more ‘spare time’ and enabled taking a risk with cultivating grains.

The other way around. You notice that plants produce seeds and seeds produce more plants. So you try taking seeds from plants you like to eat and you plant them in a spirit of optimistic experiment. Next time you pass that way you note that the seeds have indeed grown into plants you like to eat. So you do it again, possibly with different seeds from different plants.

What is crucial is whether you get to eat the plants or whether you have to share them with the tribe. If you figure they are your plants and can persuade others of this, then others will put the work into planting their own seeds, and agriculture has started. If the culture believes they are entitled to your crops just because they’re your rellies, nobody will ever bother to do the work of planting seeds. Everyone will wait for someone else to do the work. So it won’t get done.

Later, if your lucky and everyone plants seeds, your crops will attract animals, which you can also eat. Eventually someone keeps the animals around and breeds them too. But it’s the vegies first.

Social anthropologists – particularly the early ones – understood the truth and did not obscure the reality of the subsistence life of these hunter gatherers.

Isolated from the widely shared cultural innovations of other hunter groups, and with a fire-farmed environment that only made things worse, aboriginal societies turned to ritual to stabilise their miserable life. They invented a complex kinship system supported by ritual activities which took up a lot of time that might have been otherwise productive, and which incidentally extended responsibilities for ‘sharing’ and not for rewarding individual enterprise. It became tremendously inward looking, with mystic elements, and extremely gerontocratic. And violent.

One thing to note is that aboriginal societies existed in a range of environments and ecologies across the nation. Yet the cultural element was so dominant that while there were variations re the nature of kinship reckonings, the different environments didn’t produce much in the way of new technologies.

It was tough and good on them for surviving. But blankets, flour, tobacco, alcohol and sugar won.

Re the Neolithic in the Middle East, some recent work suggests ritual may have played a big part in the domestication of plants and settlement. Early settlement may have occurred around ‘farmed’ sources of grain which could be used for … ta dah! Beer!!! It’s a theory, as good as any other. Alcohol induced states of togetherness and well being could have lessened aggressions between groups.

So I’m having my evening tipple right now so that I arrive here in a musingly happy manner.

There are probably two angles here.
The prosecution would argue that it is not relevant to the central allegation of rope.
The defence would argue that it demonstrates ulterior motives of money and fame to pursue the allegation. For example, Judge Besanko went to great lengths to outline Robert-Smith’s motives for lying.

I’m reading an interesting PhD thesis on why early man never painted pictures of lentil soup or gluten-free sourdough on cave walls.
Instead it were equine, gamine and bovine… red meat on the hoof, diagrams of how to stick it with a spear. Fillets Cro-Magnon make themselves, quantity has a quality all of its own.
Humans understood these beasts because they were mammals like themselves. Breeding, rearing and milking was the start of agriculture.

Porky manlet David Sharaz will shortly split from the Australian Eclair Inhaling Champion of 2021, 2022 and 2023 (so far).

The reason, according to The Project et al will be ‘stress because of hurty comments by people who don’t understand’.

The actual reason will be that Sharaz will have well and truly realised that his meal ticket will only be good for a year or so, and having fleeced Brih-nee of all he could (‘yes darling, I think we should go with this investment which I’ll keep in my sister’s name, you know, keep the media away from it, sweetie smunchkins’) he will have realised the well is going dry.

Fires starting all at the same time captured on satellite imagery. It could be DEW – Direct Energy Weapons ( D.O.D ) admits they have them, but not sure it was used here.

It could be the northern hemisphere summer after thunderstorms after a wet winter and a few weeks recently of no rain.

Ockham’s Razor suggests it was the US Space Force and neither of the above null hypotheses.

Idiot.

The Cane Toad is starting to rack up the balls in the back of her own net.
She’s slotting own goals from all over the park.
First the great Loggies speech which delayed the trial and Whybrow claims gave the defence time to uncover Britnah’s lies.
Now the taping of the preliminaries to the interview which has dropped Team Elbow right in it.
Why did she tape that session, I hear you ask.
Well, that was going to be the fly on the wall footage for her Walkley moment.
As it turns out, the movie is more “Three Amigos” than “All The President’s Men”.

Dunno where this began, or what it is about – but I can confirm Aboriginals did grind something, for I’ve several grindstone pairs … er I mean I’ve seen & left untouched, several grindstone pairs & they had a lot of use.

It was my presumption that they ground grass seeds (or similar) into some sort of paste or powder, for the purpose of consumption & digestion.

They’re heavy/awkward enough that I need two hands to lift them.

Not sure, but apparently:

Suss as f*ck.

Probably all those Canadian weather stations, which are of course WEF Death Stars intent on burning the forest so the people will have nowhere to live except the tunnels, and the land will be taken over and used for nefarious purposes. Or something. I’m ‘not sure, but it’s suss as f*ck’.

Of course he has. In his lunch hours, and in between cashing his grifter cheques from simpletons.

Although I reckon it is a Deakin Telephony Switchboard geek telling on Britknee, it could be Billy Shorten exacting revenge on Wong, Plibersek, Albanese, Gallagher and so on relegating him to a Human Services-esque portfolio and away from Treasury, Defence, Foreign Affairs and most importantly, The Lodge.

I suspect there are several leaking sources.
The leak of videos and texts turned over as part of discovery for the trial? My money is on someone in the AFP.
The political leaking against the handbaggers? Shit, how many enemies do they have? It could be Shorten, or others who were pals of Kimberley Kitching. Whoever it is, I reckon they have a smoking gun about the payout.

France stabbing: 4 infants aged as young as 3 attacked in park
By JACQUELIN MAGNAY

Four infants as young as three years of age, and an adult are fighting for their lives after being stabbed in a park in the centre of Annecy, in the French alps.

A 32 year old Syrian refugee has been arrested, and footage soon after the attack, taken on a mobile phone by a high school student, shows the man, wearing a green bandana with a knife in his hand as two men try to surround him.

French president Emmanuel Macron said the nation was in shock and that children and an adult “are between life and death” at the moment.

He said on Twitter: “Attack of absolute cowardice this morning in a park in Annecy. Children and an adult are between life and death. The Nation is in shock. Our thoughts are with them as well as their families and the emergency services who mobilised.”

Authorities said four children, three of whom are in a life-threatening condition, as well as an adult were injured in the attack on Thursday morning local time.

Earlier there had been reports that as many as eight children and two adults were attacked.

One parent, Aurélien, who has a child at the school Quai Jules-Philippe, near to the park told Le Dauphine: “I was very scared, I ran”.

Of course, I’m sure the Syrian has ‘legitimate grievances‘.

Highlights from TE’s linked piece at 5.06, and apropos of the ex-Royal ranga’s appearance in a British court:

The best bit is right at the top, in the second sentence, which I will summarise as follows: everything in his statement is true, except for the bits that come from others, which he thinks are true but might not be. Take that, m’Lud.

And:

Harry, with your D in geography and your California mumble-speak, all the healing crystals in the world can’t help you now. When recollections vary this time, it isn’t Oprah who decides, it’s a judge.

And:

His lawyer is David Sherborne KC, a lavishly tanned man with the air of one well pleased with his hairdresser.

And especially:

Was it worth all the millions of pounds and hours of Zoom calls with his lawyers when he could have been playing with his children?

Reposted due to excellence.

Why, when I can marvel at the prospect of Imperial Walkers stamping their way through deliberately burnt-out Canadian forests, and which are piloted by UN invading troops hell-bent on enslaving populations at the behest of murderous foreign emissaries?

Re “Just call me HRH, or Prince Harry if you prefer”.
He is clearly using a branch office of Saul Goodman and Associates in LA.
More than once he has been caught out accusing a newspaper of tapping his phone to get information when, in fact, it was stuff which was already in the public domain and reported by other media outlets previously.
One so called “hack” was stuff lifted straight off a Royal press release.
One of his claims is that the newspapers portrayed him is being a stupid half-wit.
I would advise him to amend his claim and concede that as proven.
