This annoyed me greatly last night while watching The Jury, a new program on Sky. The question to audience was along the lines of reducing the right to protest in view of what the traffic blockade on Westgate Bridge and the woman who had to give birth in the family car due to the resulting traffic jam.
A young female member of the audience opined that protests are meant to disrupt to spotlight an issue. How is that fair that some snot-nosed kids can stop me from earning my living or making sure someone get to the hospital on time to save their life just to spotlight their inanity? This is trampling on other people’s rights in order to highlight their own supposed moral superiority.
Protesting used to be allowed in a park, well away from traffic and impeding other people. Protesters could even stand on street corners with their signs but not accost anyone. Even large rallies can be accommodated if they are planned in advance with adequate provision for the rest of the city life to go on as normal.
Now they can take over a city and the powers that be just shrug their shoulders. No wonder these protesters do not sway anyone to their point of view. The other thing that puts most people off is the level of entitlement exhibited by this sort of behaviour. I wonder if this is due to these protesters being from the well monied upper middle class, the working class don’t have the time for it and they also have a much stronger grip on reality.

There are many sensible reasons for Peter Dutton and his Coalition allies to keep pushing for nuclear power.
As is well established, nuclear energy is extremely safe, relatively easy to create in abundance and completely environmentally friendly.
That last point is important if Dutton aims to drag the squishier Libs over to his side of the atomic argument (or he and the party’s rationalist wing could just jettison those fancyboy urban Turnbull types entirely … but that’s another argument for another day).
But two of the best reasons for conservatives to support nuclear energy would still apply even if no commercial nuclear reactors were ever to be built on Australian soil.
As a branding exercise, being pro-nuclear puts a party on the right side of science. It indicates that a party is not beholden to ridiculous Boomer-era superstitions about scary uranium.
Being pro-nuclear tells the electorate that your assessment of atomic energy isn’t swayed by childhood exposure to anti-nuke propaganda.
A pro-nuclear party has typically encountered anti-nuke propaganda – such as 1979’s dire cinematic fright-fest The China Syndrome – and since moved on from there, in large part due to simply growing up.
As well, those in the pro-nuclear camp are obviously able to calculate risk and reward, and to draw lessons from history. For example:
Reward: Nuclear energy produces nearly three trillion kilowatt hours (kWh) of power worldwide every year.
A European Nuclear Society comparison puts that in an easily understood context: one kilogram of coal can generate eight kWh of energy. One kilogram of mineral oil can generate 12 kWh of energy. But just one kilogram of uranium-235 can generate 24,000,000 kWh of energy – and does so without the carbon dioxide by-products of coal or oil.
Risk: History’s four worst nuclear energy incidents occurred at Windscale in the UK in 1957, Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania in 1979, Chernobyl in the former Soviet Union in 1986 and Fukushima in Japan in 2011.
In those incidents a total of about 30 people died of nuclear-related causes. Well, that’s not entirely accurate. All of them died at Chernobyl.
Lesson: Don’t let commies near anything big and burny. Those people are idiots.
Aside from that, go for it. You know what is far deadlier than nuclear power? Lithium-ion batteries.
Two people died last week in a lithium-ion battery blaze in Lake Macquarie.
According to data collated by Australian emergency responder advisory firm EV Firesafe, 36 people were killed worldwide by similar battery disasters in just the first half of last year.
That’s more people dead in six months than have been killed by nuclear energy since the first commercial reactor fired up in Britain 68 years ago.
Brand-wise then, pro-nuclear is where you want to be. The second reason for occupying that space is because it puts your opponents in the anti-nuclear crazy camp.
It makes them defend the superstitious and irrational, and it turns all their arguments into desperate pursuits of even the tiniest slivers of supportive evidence.
Look at Chris Bowen, our Energy Minister. The poor bloke has become such a frantic cherry picker that he could get seasonal work in Young.
On Sunday he rejected Coalition claims that Ontario in Canada had low power bills relative to Australia because of its nuclear plants.
“What Mr Dutton doesn’t tell you,” Bowen said on the ABC’s Insiders, “is the Ontario state government subsidises energy bills in Ontario by $6 billion Canadian dollars a year.”
But there’s more to the story, which is the usual case with Bowen.
Ontario’s energy subsidies, as summarised by Canada’s CBC News, were introduced because “green energy contracts” signed by previous eco-governments “locked the province into paying wind- and solar-power producers above-market prices for generating electricity”.
Nothing to do with nuclear, then. So much for Bowen’s Insiders line that “when you put scrutiny” on pro-nuclear arguments “they crumble like a Sao in a blender”.
Beyond nuclear issues, it is a good idea in general to provoke Labor and the left in ways that expose their peculiar beliefs.

My theory re the nonMoomba is that it is part of the ongoing weather panic, but with an underlying aspect. I’ve never read Vonnegut but juts this morning I was reading about a short story he wrote in which, in the interest of radical equality, a society weighs down strong people with weights, makes the beautiful wear masks and forces the intelligent to wear a device that interferes with their ability to think. I think he wrote in 1961.

Embracing ‘feelings’ is no solution to scourge of youth crime
Government failure and waste finds no greater expression than in the more than $1m a year it costs to detain each juvenile offender and the fact that 58 per cent of them are back in detention within a year of being released.
Of course, near-bankrupt Victoria is the worst state. The Productivity Commission reports that Victorian taxpayers pay $2.16m annually for each youth detainee and the recidivism rate in the competence-free state is 71 per cent.
It is beyond incredulous that in this technology age, where billions have been devoted to research into the causes and cures of crime, governments remain functionally clueless on how to efficiently deal with the scourge of increasing youth crime.
The most recent data from the ABS shows that in the previous year police charged nearly 50,000 offenders aged 10-17, a 6 per cent increase from the previous year. And we are not taking about petty transgressions. The most common offence among juvenile offenders (25 per cent) is assault intending to cause injury.
The youth crime rate will only drop once the legal system makes young people accountable for their actions and the system reverses the trend of encouraging young people to embrace their feelings. Instead of surrendering to their feelings, they need to be taught impulse control and that the welfare of others is no less important than their own.
The importance of stopping crime cannot be overstated. The empirical data shows crime, especially violent and sexual offences, can ruin people’s lives. Research demonstrates the most effective way to reduce crime is to increase the chances people will be caught. This is known as the theory of absolute general deterrence. It works – all of the time. That’s why speed cameras have had such a dramatic effect on reducing speeding and people don’t commit crime outside police stations.
If governments want to reduce crime, there is a sure fix. Put more uniform police on the streets. In crime hotspots, this should be supplement with AI-enhanced CCTV which automatically notifies police when suspicious activity is detected.
This will only be effective if criminals face unwanted consequences. The primary aim of the criminal justice system is community protection. The main consideration in setting penalty severity is the principle of proportionality; the view that the harm caused by the crime should match the harshness of the penalty.
Both of these considerations mean all serious sexual and violent offenders should be subjected to harsh sanctions. The human body does not distinguish between the level of suffering caused by being stabbed by a 50-year-old or 15-year-old. The community needs to be protected as much from teenagers as adult criminals.
The goal of rehabilitation is alluring but it’s failing – youth reoffending rates are higher now than five years ago. Clearly the offenders are receiving the wrong advice and treatment. The criminal justice system needs to stop the nonsense of encouraging youth to connect with their inner selves. It needs to teach them objective truths in the form of the importance of hard work, grit and being good at not getting what they want – even if it triggers their feelings.
At present, the evidence shows the only forms of rehabilitation that work are age and education. People age out of crime. The prefrontal cortex of people does not mature until age 25. All young offenders are salvageable and can become contributing members of the community. This can be accelerated through better education. Nearly 80 per cent of young adult prisoners have not completed high school – an approximately four times higher non-completion rate than other young adults.
This gets us to the complex tension between the desire to rehabilitate young offenders and the need to protect the community from serious acts of violence.
Primacy must be accorded to incapacitating offenders from inflicting serious harm on more victims. Yet prisons are not the solution for young people: they diminish educational progress and governments have no idea how to run youth detention centres in a non-profligate way.
The excessive spending on youth justice provides an easy alternative to youth detention. Each serious juvenile offender should be chaperoned by a police officer 24/7 as they go about their daily activities.
Police chaperoning sounds excessive and simplistic, and there are many theoretical reasons not to pursue this approach, but all of them are evaporated by the thudding economic reality that the cost of a 24/7 police chaperone for each young offender would be approximately $400,000 annually (ie, five full-time police salaries – factoring in holidays and other leave – working on this one task). Incredibly, this is more than a $600,000 annual saving for each offender (the saving is $1.5m in Victoria).
The job of police would be made easier if the offenders were required to wear GPS tracking bracelets and compelled to stay within set geographical confines, which were sufficiently expansive to include important facilities, such as school and sports activities. Thus when offenders were inside their home or school, the police would not need to have visual contact with the offenders.
Constant police monitoring of young offenders would obviously have downsides. Some offenders would find it embarrassing and humiliating. Others would regard it as a serious invasion of their privacy. But these disadvantages are minor when compared with the harshness of the alternative: being removed from their family, school and friends and placed in detention.
The money saved through appointing a police chaperone to each serious juvenile offender should be spent on putting more police and AI-enhanced CCTV cameras on the street, which would reduce the crime problem at the outset.
Alternatively, governments can keep employing even more misguided youth counsellors and hiding the cost of their incompetence in remote government reports and hope they can continue to avoid accountability for their breathtaking missteps.

If people with solar panels on their roofs only ever get the AEMO market rate then they will rapidly change their behaviour. When the wholesale price is negative they will turn off their feed-in inverter. No one want to pay to give something away that they don’t have to.
That then lets them decide if it’s worth buying a battery, since the electricity they chose not to sell in the middle of the day when the wholesale price was negative would potentially be worth selling in the evening peak instead.
I myself don’t think the economics stack up, but if people are allowed to make free market decisions themselves it would be up to them.

War memorial vandalised with Gaza message
The RSL National President Greg Melick has condemned pro-Palestine activists who vandalised the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial in Canberra by spray-painting slogans on the monument describing Israel as a “colony” and warning of “genocide” in Gaza.
The protestors vandalised the memorial on Anzac Parade overnight on Sunday in a protest to highlight the situation in Gaza, with Mr Melick describing their actions as “contemptible” and Opposition veterans’ affairs spokesman Barnaby Joyce warning they had undermined their own cause.
The slogans on the national memorial – which said “eyes on Rafah” and “this is genocide” – were written in large red graffiti and had not been cleaned on Monday, which is a public holiday in the nation’s capital to mark “Canberra Day.” Other slogans included “eyes on Gaza,” “free Gaza” and “the colony will fall” and were clearly visible to residents walking or driving by.
Mr Melick said that people were “entitled to protest, but the desecration of a memorial to those who served, suffered and died in the Vietnam conflict is to be deplored.”
“The protesters should have chosen another way to get their message across. The brave Australian service personnel who served in Vietnam had nothing to do with the current conflict in Gaza and to use their memorial as a platform to protest is contemptible. On behalf of the RSL and all who have served and continue to serve our nation, we condemn the actions of the protesters,” he said.
Mr Melick warned the desecration of the memorial did nothing to enhance the cause of those suffering in the Middle East.
Opposition veterans’ affairs spokesman Barnaby Joyce told The Australian: “Bearing in mind that 523 Australians paid the supreme sacrifice and nearly 2,400 were wounded, that countless marriages broke down, that people’s careers were left behind by men and women who unselfishly served this nation, the disgraceful actions of those who desecrate a war memorial are beyond contempt and anathema to every person from poorer suburbs to the best street.
“I don’t know what you were trying to achieve, but if smashing your cause to pieces was your objective, then bullseye – you’ve hit it,” Mr Joyce said.
One Canberra resident, Michael Webster, who took pictures of the graffiti on Monday morning expressed deep disappointment the ACT government had not taken swift action to have the memorial cleaned, saying the graffiti was an act of desecration.
“The memorial is a recognition of the service and sacrifice made by men and women in a war wholly unrelated to the situation in the Middle East right now,” Mr Webster said. “It took years for Australians to reconcile about that war. The graffiti is intended to open up deep wounds in Australia for political purposes. It is intended to divide Australians. We cannot allow such behaviour in our society. Everyone is entitled to protest. But this is not a protest. This is an attack on our identity and national values.”

Despite the global boiling predicted to sublime Victoria into the stratosphere these last few days we rode our bikes 60km on the Great Victorian Rail Trail yesterday and today. And we were not alone, various other bipeds were risking life and limb on the trail.
I was impressed by the countryside along the Goulburn River near Tallarook, nice as was it must be truly magnificent in Spring.
In search of a coffee however we found things were indeed crook in Tallarook, the only shop was closed so we tried Seymour.
Many cafe’s closed but we found one that was open run by a group of Filipinos. They were trying to master the register , train a young chap and serve the customers so things were somewhat f@cked up. Matters were not helped when the young bloke did something and the register spazzed out.
Service took forever and then the wrong order turned up. However they seemed to be trying and I went from being irritated to feeling sorry for them, at least they were open and giving it a go.
When paying the bill (they had to add it upon paper) they were very apologetic and confirmed my suspicions that they had just taken over the shop.

Serendipity stay, Public Holiday saw the Galley Museum open staffed by volunteers – serious collection of local history housed in the 1897 Imperial Hotel, oh my, what a stunning collection of photographs and artifacts. Then for coffee, cafe owner somewhat overwhelmed “didn’t expect to be quite so busy this morning”, provided with a superb brew. Drove into Zeehan ( silver), Strahan, and am in awe of Mt Lyall. Last few days, climbed the Nut at Stanley in plenty of sea fog, roamed around Wynyard fossil beach, decided we would happily live there. Once again, volunteer ladies at the info centre were well worth a chat to. We are very impressed, God Bless Australia.

Cafe been owned by those Fillo’s for a while as far as I knew. Was a busy day out though. I used to know the original couple who opened it up from Avenel. That was a long time ago now though. Before that it was an Autobarn shop.
I’m enjoying the weather in my last week here, no humidity. Hopefully I get back to the tropics before the building monsoon closes roads. Looking at a 3-5 trip back, between 700 & 1100km a day depending how quick we do it.
Last trip to Melbourne tomorrow to see one of the specialists, had a PET scan last week. Apparently doing stupid stuff in my younger days means I have to back of an 80yo with disc bulges to boot and numerous other degenerative conditions that will cause me arthritis. Already talking with my Super fund and TPD cover as it looks like my working days are numbered and I have nearly 2 decades left in me.
