Nighthawks, Edward Hopper, 1942

N.B. If you’re commenting here for the first time it goes into automoderation. Once I approve it it should appear immediately and without delay from then on.

Also, can people let me know if they like or dislike the nested comment format. I think it saves having to quote replies to existing comments as you can reply directly (there are also other benefits to this) or do you prefer the old format?

Any other suggestions are welcomed too.

Yes. Deja vu all over again.

As Dover says, it might take some time to work itself out.

Great idea, Dover. A lot to be said for 250 comments per page, a la the old Cat. One hundred comments per page was designed by Word Press for blogs with much less daily traffic than Dover’s new Cat will be getting in the coming weeks and months.

Flying Pigs – I am fairly sure Jo Nova obtained a stand alone copy of WP software right at the start, and stays right away from WP as they are now. Her site doesn’t have the issues we’re seeing on the Kittens and places like Tony Heller’s blog. She’s a science communication grad as I recall, and has had a commendable level of planning and sceptical caution to’ve done all this so long ago.

WUWT also moved to a different commenting plug-in not too long ago.

The thumbs up button is refusing to…well…go thumbs up for me.

Systems and I do not have a straightforward relationship. It’s like they know I was once a gun tester and they simply roll over and die before I even get to do anything.

Sunday morning I even brought the lovely Samsung tech helper to complete speechlessness when, following carefully every individual step of her instructions to hand over my device to her remote control in order to solve my problem, we got a flat out refusal from their server and a recurring error message on my screen. The phone call continued to tick away for another ten minutes but there was nothing audible from my end. I do hope she has recovered.

Better late then never:

BECAUSE THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA WAS NOT VERY INTERESTED IN THIS STORY (FOR OBVIOUS REASONS) IT IS LIKELY THAT YOU DID NOT SEE THIS WHEN IT BROKE. FOR THIS REASON WE ARE POSTING IT AGAIN.
The sh*t show the Democrats staged at the confirmation hearings for Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, was a disgusting group denigration of the high office Democrats have been entrusted with.

This was borne out again yesterday when Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley made a third criminal referral, this one against a second Kavanaugh accuser, Judy Munro-Leighton.

Here is Grassley’s letter of referral to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and FBI Director Christopher Wray:

https://thebeltwayreport.com/2021/08/p6203/

Skanks who falsely accuse men of rape are doubly guilty: firstly for ruining the man’s life (see Rush, Jarratt, McLachlan, Diamond etc), but they also make it harder for genuine cases to gain traction. Of course the demorats and the left have never cared except if it provides political capital for them. Look at the disparity between accusations against the scomo government compared to the hidden accusations in the liars.

Made worse by Scummo and the Liberal’s total feebleness in dealing with Labor and the Greens…particularly over the Porter nonsense. The Liberals could easily have thrown stuff back at Labor….but they didn’t. Back in March when the Porter story broke all Scummo had to do was stand in front of the MSM and mention…Shorten, Shorten, Shorten and say that Porter, like Shorten, should be accorded the presumption of innocence. FOX News Dirtbag Chris Wallace Tries to Blame Trump for Biden’s Afghanistan Debacle (VIDEO)

In March 2009 Barack Obama reached out to the Taliban terrorist organization for peace talks.

Joe Biden at the time told reporters “only 5% of the Taliban is incorrigible.”

In August 2010 Barack Obama removed the Taliban from the national terror list.

In May 2012 Barack Obama rewarded the Taliban terrorists with their own office in Qatar for peace talks.

Also in May 2012 the Taliban bombed Kabul two hours after Obama announced peace talks with the terrorist group.

In 2012 the Obama administration even paid for the Taliban peace office in Qatar.

In 2013 Barack Obama secretly released five deadly Taliban prisoners from Gitmo in exchange for peace talks.

In 2014 the Taliban officially released a statement on victory in Afghanistan 6 years into the Obama presidency.

On Sunday FOX News host Chris Wallace blamed the Trump Administration for situation in Afghanistan.

This is after years of Obama and Biden appeasing the Taliban, releasing their top operatives from prison and building them an office for peace talks in Qatar.

Much the same here. Looking only at the Army, LTGEN David Morrison was CA from 2011 to 2015. He probably began to have an influence on officer career paths as a Col or Brig, some ten years earlier. CAPTs and MAJs he sponsored will now be BRIGs and MAJGENs, themselves having been able to influence officer career paths for more than a decade.

His pernicious influence still could reach down to some COLs and LTCOLs. The only possible solution to his influence is either a purge reaching down to that level, or a major military disaster. FDR jumped Colonel George C Marshall over some 400 officers senior to him to prepare the US Army for WW II; would any Australian government have the cojones to select a proven LTCOL or COL as the next CA?

And ditto for the bureaucracy.

Either we are hospitalising as an exaggerated precautionary measure, or they are a callous lot.

My understanding is all nursing home residents who have positive tests are being transferred to hospital as a precaution. That is going to inflate the numbers of hospitalized, but is a better situation than last year when Sutton said that infected elderly would stay in their nursing home. We all know what happened then.

PROSECUTORS in the murder trial of NT Police officer Zach Rolfe will apply for proceedings to be stayed pending an appeal to the High Court of Australia.

Rolfe has pleaded not guilty to murdering 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker in a police shooting in Yuendumu in 2019.

The full bench of the NT Supreme Court last week ruled an immunity provision in the Police Administration Act could be put to the jury in the trial now due to start next Monday.

But late on Tuesday it was announced the Crown would apply to the High Court for special leave to appeal the Full Court’s ruling.

Section 148B of the act excuses police officers from criminal responsibility for acts done “in good faith” during the performance of their duties.

Crown prosecutor Philip Strickland SC had argued that if Rolfe was acting in defence of himself or a colleague, he was no longer exercising the police power of arrest.

But in their joint decision, Justices Stephen Southwood and Dean Mildren ruled there was nothing in the act “to prevent a police officer from exercising multiple powers and performing multiple functions during the course of a single incident”.

“The Crown’s submissions overlook the fact that at the relevant time the defendant may have been exercising his power of arrest and simultaneously performing his functions of preventing an offence and protecting the life of Constable (Adam) Eberl,” they wrote.

“It may be that when he fired the second and third shots the defendant was intending to both arrest the deceased and defend Constable Eberl.

“It would be open to the defendant, if he gives evidence, to state as much.”

Mr Strickland is set to make the stay application after the NT’s current three day lockdown is due to end on Thursday afternoon.

I was also going to tell her about the contrast of young men storming the beaches on D-Day in the face of very real death compared to men today of the same age hiding in the dark (in case the new variant can see) in their house but decided not to because she came from Germany.

It is not so much that it would be awkward to mention that rather than it would be more awkward trying to avoid being awkward. That is it right there. As far as I know she would have no trouble but I would feel I had to make sure she understood I understood what she probably has not problem with.

And on that note I shall share an anecdote from an earlier life.

I worked in a language school in Japan where we had English, French, and German teachers. The number of English teachers was growing which meant finding space in the teachers’ room to write up comments was growing more and more difficult.

One day an exasperated German teacher complained, “Ah! We need more room!”*

One of the English teachers quipped, “Whoa. Look out. Remember the last time a German said that.”

Suffice to say the English and French teachers laughed uproariously. The other German teachers did not seem to note the exchange. But the German teacher immediately replied along the lines, “Ah you are talking about the war. Terrible. Terrible.”

Brought up in a state of reflexive apology for something before he was born. But you can’t just say, “Nah, forget it.” Instead people just told him to lighten up. It was a joke.

Nice guy. Knew his German wines, which was a boon for me. Even told me about a wine shop in Kobe where they had a vast imported range on the basement floor where few Japanese ventured.

Ultimately, the collapse of the Afgan cavemen will be good for the west.
The greater the physical threat, the closer the West comes to the equivalent of a Munich realisation and it’s Halifaxes are overwhelmed and discarded by a society suffering genuine fear.
Problem being of course, there are so many Halifaxes in contemporary society we will only have Maccas and CFC kids to take over.
That’s not a bad thing; in an indulgent, self centered world, kids who are prepared to get out there and earn a few bucks in a disciplined organisation are probably our last hope.

Others here are exploring the alternatives and weighing them.

The reasons why some don’t trust mainstream views are a story in themselves. Why won’t some people just trust like they used to? It’s a mystery.

Oh yes. After the Full Bench ruled that self-defence was, in fact, an option, and that intent to moida was clearly not there as the bloke was still alive whilst being dragged out of the house and into the van (Southwood J actually said something along the lines of ‘well, he didn’t shoot him four or five times taking him to the van, did he?’), AND that the jacks can exercise multiple powers during the same fluid incident (natch), that is the only card the prosecution has left.

Not exactly sure how long a case remains a case – it appears to be driven by follow up testing, which is reported in aggregates. But as a sanity check, based on around 40,000 daily new cases over the Delta spike, this suggests once diagnosed, you are statistically Covid for about 28 days.

Yes, it is not possible to have a reasoned discussion about some of these ideas or people.

However, and this we must note. A respected site that has good stuff on it re vax testing and bringing down some of the worst of the vax loonies, when I explored it a bit, also had stuff trying to bring down Abigail Shrier’s excellent book ‘Irreversible Damage’ by putting forward as ‘proper science’ some of the very poor clinical work of mad gender bender shrinks and assorted gender clinic loonies, all clearly on the feed the kiddies hormones and chop off their bits bandwagon. To be fair, there was in the comments quite a bit of opposition to this ‘science’, but not on the main thread. So you have to be selective in what you take from sites that might be otherwise ok. It’s always a matter of keeping sceptical, knowing how to sort a scientific argument from dross, hence looking for good arguments supported by good evidence.

Bruce,
I feel your pain.
I felt like I had been gut-punched when I was informed that McGowan had instituted a ‘at least one jab to enter the state’ policy. It was a threshold I never thought I’d see crossed in this country.

I was once proud of my country, so proud and grateful that I spent a good portion of my life dedicated to it’s defence. I’ve only just realised that it wasn’t my country I was proud of, it was what it provided it’s citizens, what I thought it stood for. That has all been removed in less than 18 months. The country has literally been divided into parts, segments of our citizens have been de-humanised, and the very essence of our personal property, the sovereignty of our bodies, are being bandied about as a political football, all by a government sworn to protect the integrity of the Commonwealth, and our rights.

I once sourced great pride and motivation from my fellow countrymen and women. I’m left now with an overwhelming sense of disgust. How quickly our society and culture disintegrated into that morass of human filth that fills our history books. I just don’t wish to be here any longer. However, I remain focused on my wife and children. Nothing else matters anymore.

My duty is to see them through this, or at least soften their landing into whatever dystopian nightmare finds equilibrium. Nothing else now matters, certainly not some illusion of a ‘united’ country, filled with tough, fair minded people who believe in a fair go. That Australia, if it even existed in the new century, was crushed under the feet of the panicked crowd in March last year. I’ll continue to help and support those who are struggling against this insanity, but I’ll not be doing so based on the fact that they label themselves ‘Australian’. They’ll now need better bonafides than that. It’s a meaningless label.

Whatever the eventual outcome, a return to my ‘normality’ or, indeed, a ‘new normal’, things can never be remotely the same. Some things, once seen, cannot be unseen. Once rung, Bells cannot be unrung. I’ve seen what a large portion of my fellow citizens are capable of, and I fear I may not have seen the worst of it yet. I’ve seen the indifference they have to what I thought were traditional Australian values. I’ve also seen what our politicians, of both persuasions, are capable of. More importantly for the future, they’ve seen what they can get away with…and how.
moderated

Absolutely first class comment Mater.

EU panic as bloc poised to offer Pakistan cash in desperate bid to halt new migrant crisis (17 Aug)

Josep Borrell, the bloc’s top foreign diplomat, said he would provide support to countries in the regions to cope with the “negative spillovers” that can be expected from increasing numbers of refugees. The plans were discussed at an emergency meeting of EU foreign affairs ministers called to discuss the situation in Afghanistan. A growing number of European governments are fearful that the Taliban’s Afghan takeover could spark a repeat of the 2015 migrant crisis.

Yup, bribe Pakistan so that millions of refugees don’t try to come to Europe. One day after people were falling off planes trying to get out of Kabul. Very hard to beat for completely degenerate tin-eared smugness.

1. Because not even the Taliban thought it would be so easy to reclaim an entire country, it takes them a year or so to plan and carry out another full-blown terrorist attack on Western soil. Or sponsor someone to do it, and harbour them before, during and after.

2. Re-invading is not an option, because conquering in this day is considered a bit low-brow. ‘Surgical strikes’ become the go.

3. After each such strike, the Talis will wheel out a few truckloads of pre-executed women and children, tastefully arrange them for the cameras and claim atrocities by the infidel.

4. And around and around it will go, because nobody has the election cycle courage to take out an entire city. Or province. Gaza, writ large.

And then this one.

Pete Buttigieg Announces He’s About To Become a Parent (17 Aug)

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg on Tuesday announced that he and his husband, Chasten, are set to become parents.

They broke the news on Twitter.

“We’re overjoyed to share that we’ve become parents!” Pete Buittigieg wrote. “The process isn’t done yet and we’re thankful for the love, support, and respect for our privacy that has been offered to us. We can’t wait to share more soon.”

One wonders which one of them was the pregnant one. But talk about a terrible roll of the dice for the poor kid. No matter what gender it is it’ll be on sex change drugs very quickly I suspect, since that’s the latest fad amongst the ragingly woke.

Mater, Bruce of WA, Eddystone, Cassie too (if I recall correctly)

Yes, I hear you loud and clear.

While still being in the relative calm of regional Qld, the ripples and echoes of the disasters and hideous decisions and impositions of the premiers in other states and even our own SE corner is taking its toll. There is the ever-present knowledge that we are all just one probably manufactured “positive” (inappropriate anyway) PCR test away from similar crap, and the understanding that they simply do not care a single fig about us, our lives, or the lives of our kids.

I also gave enough years of my life to the ADF, and am just glad I’m no longer there and that I’m beyond age and physical capability to be called back to active duty.

I’m also disgusted at what such a cabal of arrogant *rseholes has done to my country. The Australia I grew up in was a magnificent place. I doubt very much that that wonderful place will ever return. That’s the saddest part of all this. I’m old enough to not be bothered by the idea of dying, but I grieve that today’s kids will likely never know and enjoy the country I did. It’s hard to see a way back from here.

At one level I think perhaps these people do not trouble themselves to know the harm they’re causing, but on another I think they do know – but simply do not care at all. Some probably are even enjoying the hell out of it.

I don’t know calli.

Maybe its the behaviour of government, suspending democracy, indefinitely. Maybe it’s Australia not experiencing a widespread covid outbreak to date. Maybe a significant percentage are the same people that always prefer a conspiracy over reality and meticulously produced videos made them seem more plausible.

Hiya, I think you probably meant Calli but further to what you’ve written, Fred Pawle has written an excellent piece in Spiked Online….it was only uploaded yesterday…

“The authoritarian takeover of Australia
This once happy and freedom-loving nation is being crushed by its pro-lockdown elites.”

It’s a little depressing but then again I’m finding a lof about this country depressing.

Which reminds me of another pernicious claim made at old and dash cats.

Some Australians receiving vaccines are only getting saline injections.

Either as unwitting participants in an ongoing secret trial, or to hid the vacc kill rate, depending on who made the claim.

Btw Nothing the bird man claimed re covid was original thinking either , it’s all there, swirling around the internet.
