Opinion
Year in review: Mark McGowan and the upper house chamber of ‘total control’

As an election year full of bushfires and COVID-19 lockdowns comes to an end we can look back and reflect on the state of West Australian politics at a time when a man previously known as ‘sneakers’ has become a rockstar often referred to as our ‘state daddy’.

Who could forget how former opposition leader Zak Kirkup, who was in charge for all of 109 days, endeared himself to the electorate by throwing in the towel before the final polling day on March 13.

If you do not remember, it was a bold strategy which very much did not work. Mr Kirkup, whose exit from politics has resulted in a positive with his co-founding of an electrical contractor business employing Aboriginal tradies, and his Liberal colleagues were swept out of parliament on a red Labor wave spurred by the public love for WA Premier Mark McGowan AKA Mr 91 per cent at his polling peak.

Labor won 53 out of 59 seats in the lower house and 22 out of 36 in the upper house giving it ‘total control’ of both chambers for the first time in 120 years.

Mr McGowan himself had an 87 per cent two-party preferred vote in his safe seat of Rockingham and still has an approval rating around 77 per cent to round out 2021 as he did what most of a scared populace in a global pandemic would want, which is keep COVID-19 out of the state.
The church of Mark

Mr McGowan has continued his transformation from a faction-less bespectacled opposition leader, who no one knew but just so happened not to be Colin Barnett, to a modern folk hero.

He has inspired tattoos, songs, artwork and even fake cereal boxes.

At the same time he has turned WA into the Hotel California sung about by the Eagles thanks to the brief period you could visit the lovely place and subsequent border changes that meant you could never leave.

For the most part, keeping other Australians out has played well for Mr McGowan, but he does have his detractors.

Human Rights advocates for one, anyone with extended family outside of WA and of course eastern media commentators and newly minted New South Wales premier Dominic Perrottet.

Mr Perrottet’s biggest zinger was when he described his WA counterpart as being like Gollum from the fantasy series Lord of the Rings because of his wish to hoard the state’s ‘precious’ GST.

The ‘fight’ to keep the GST will continue to play out at the upcoming federal election, despite Prime Minister Scott Morrison and federal opposition leader Anthony Albanese saying the carve-up would not change, as Mr McGowan looks sure to play a visible role in WA to win seats for Labor.

US census: coronavirus restrictions spark move to lockdown-free states

Adam Creighton

American mums frustrated with coronavirus restrictions have powered a million-strong exodus of Americans from Democrat to Republican states, as the country’s population growth plunges to the lowest level since the 18th century, new census data reveals.

Pandemic restrictions especially school closures have supercharged a great migration from New York, California and Illinois, three big states where schools were shut or only partly open for most of last year, toward Texas, Florida and Arizona, states that had relatively few restrictions.

A record 1,003,000 Americans moved states between April 2020 and July 2021, encompassing the first few waves of Covid-19 in the US, according to analysis by The Australian of the latest US Census data, released this week, including almost 595,000 to Florida (264,000), Texas (211,000) and Arizona (120,000).

Kelly Ruth, 44, a stay-at-home mum and part-time blogger, moved her family of four from Pennsylvania to Delray Beach Florida, to escape “the crazy” and ensure her teenage children, 14 and 15, could attend school in person without masks.

“We wanted our kids to live like it was 2019. Florida gave us the chance to do just that,” she told The Australian, adding that she knew other families who’d moved to Florida for similar reasons.

“In August 2020 we bought a second home here, and then about six months later decided we wanted to stay permanently,” she said.

Comment on that story – two Democrat politicians, prominent in the “Defund The Police” movement were carjacked – snork, snork..

Serious question, anyone know why duty free grog would be getting confiscated in a transit of Singapore. Nil issues out of Europe. Apparently an issue in transit. I have seen it years ago when flying in & out of Oz with reaction to the shoe bomber, with all the technology available now this still really in effect?

If I were cynical I’d say the (non) Duty Free outlets you are channelled through before customs in BNE, SYD or MEL would be quite content with this arrangement.

I don’t see him as a knight in shiny armour, and he disappointed me even before the election. He was asked, prior to the election, if he was going to cut the ABC budget (due to the “economic emergency” he was going to address), and he said that the ABC wouldn’t be touched. There was no need for him to make that announcement, he could have used standard poli-waffle speech and talked about government expenditure generally, but he didn’t, he said that the ABC wouldn’t be touched.

Nevertheless, he was better than his preceders and successors.

Johannesburg airport is notorious. I think it’s all about maximising sales of the airport’s duty free sbops which in turn finds its way back into site rentals.

When I got pinged I refused to dump the bottle in the wheely bin provided and insisted that I be allowed to pour the contents of the bottle down the toilet situated some 40m away.

Every once in a while, an event occurs which restores your faith in human nature. The Tele:

A fight over unpaid rent, a playstation and who owns a cat has left one man dead and his son fighting for life after a wild brawl in Sydney’s western suburbs, police said.

The man, aged 40, died after being stabbed in the neck when more than a dozen people arranged to meet on Wednesday night in a park at Whalan — where two people were going to have a fight.

The traditional one on one, suitably attended, to determine honour and ownership of cats. We’ve all been there.

Instead of a one-on-one contest as was planned, the situation turned into an out of control melee where at least three people were injured after a knife was used.

The man’s 19-year-old son was stabbed in the chest and is in a critical condition while his 25-year-old uncle was also knifed and now in a serious condition.

Family. Extremely important at this time of year, as is motor sports:

A friend of the three stabbed men then jumped into a ute and tried to run over members of the opposing side but lost control of the vehicle which flipped onto its roof.

The driver and two females who were inside the ute at the time were able to get out of the upturned vehicle unharmed.

This is the Australia we know and love. A word from plod:

“It’s trivial and senseless act,” Detective Chief Inspector Paul Tickner said.

Now just hold it right there Detective Chespector. You take that back. Cat ownership is critical. In these trying times, you never know when you’ll need half a dozen dim sims.

Na Rex can’t see that behaviour in Singapore. Definitely at Phnom Penh, some Indo airports or even KL/BKK many years back. Reckon it is an Australian requirement.

I don’t bring much grog back anymore when I am infrequently overseas but do remember in the early 2000’s having no problems internally in Asia including the ME & Africa routes but as soon as an Australian destination was involved it had to be in checked luggage. Thought with all the new scanners airports everywhere are using this would have all gone by the wayside by now.

My dear fellow, I grew up in a part of Northern NSW known for its black ice, love of banjos and famous Light Horsemen.

Sydney was a place I only visited when I had to, or as a jumping-off point towards the Riverina or (occasionally mis-)adventures interstate.

And I now live in an even bigger country town on the other side of the country with a better selection of Target and Kmart stores (I’m still not sure what to make of the sharks, but. They didn’t have those in the rivers at home…)

Suffice to say my knowledge and understanding of big metro culture is err…limited. The Perthite concepts of ‘North-‘ and ‘South of the River’ and the fact that ne’er the twain shall meet still confuses me.

At 19:45 local time I ubered to the duxton where I had booked for four days. At 20:45 I had ubered back home . They wouldn’t have me without a mask or documentary evidence that I have a rare medical condition which precludes my wearing one. (I do. It’s called ‘sanity’.) So I ubered straight back. They wanted me to pay for one night. I told them no. So I transferred most of the money on the card to another account before they just stole it.

I was asked by the receptionist for documentation on my claimed exemption, and asked her if she could first give me details of the HIV status of the entire staff.

So they fucked up my holiday but saved me a few thousand bucks, so it’s not so bad. Ruined my prospects of picking up omicron, but I’m probably immune to it anyway.

To be fair to the Duxton, they had no way of knowing about this condition until yesterday, when the edict came down from Marx McClown. They could have told me about it yesterday and saved me a couple of uber fares.

It’s cost them a lot more than it cost me to implement this insane mandate. I doubt if they’ll have the sense to blame the government for losing my custom. But they should.

Re duty free, just before wuflu appeared here, I took the family to Rarotonga for a week, first and last holiday involving plane travel for us. Anyway time came to leave and come home, got to the airport an hour before the flight. Shortly after we got there the duty free shop opened, I had a look they had a great range and very cheap prices. I took some whisky to the counter and got my card out to pay when the salesman said “I’m not supposed to tell you this but you can’t take this on the plane”, after a bit more discussion it turns out that on flights to Australia leaving the Cook Islands you aren’t allowed to carry on duty free. So the only place you can take duty free is to NZ. Now the only plane leaving that day was ours and we went to Sydney, so nobody could take the stuff with them. I asked the bloke why he was open and he said the boss still manages to sell some and gets it back after the flight leaves.

That came after a similar record just the day before with 186 cases, with state Chief Health Officer John Gerrard earlier in the week saying case numbers would grow exponentially.

He went even further on Thursday, pointing out that COVID-19 was going to go right through Queensland, almost certainly in the form of the Omicron variant, and that authorities were not only not trying to stop it, they were counting on it.

“Not only is the spread of this virus inevitable, it is necessary,” Dr Gerrard said.

“In order for us to go from the pandemic phase to an endemic phase, the virus has to be widespread. We all have to have immunity.”

Changi Airport Terminal 1 does not have a central security screening checkpoint. Every gate has a body scanner and bag x-ray machine. You can buy alcohol at any of the stores in the terminal and they will deliver it sealed to the gate and you pick it up after you go through security, however if you have duty free grog in your hand luggage and you get off the plane during the transit it will get confiscated when you go to reboard as you have to go back through the gate security checkpoint.

On November 6th, 2020, according to a later recall petition, former Board member Debbie Rose contacted the Superintendent and the Board to complain that Barts was using her private Facebook page to conduct school business. In response, Barts posted an update, saying that her page had been “archived and is not coming back,” a move made, she said, for anyone “who is trying to FOIA my old page.” Barts had another fascinating habit of publicly setting down in writing suggestions to constituents for how to work around FOIA. “Please continue to call me if you want to discuss items with discretion,” she’d write. “Emails are subject to FOIA.” All this was like wearing a “Honk if you like violating the Freedom of Information Act” bumper sticker on your forehead.

Tens of thousands of New South Wales residents have been braving lengthy queues each day for a PCR test ahead of Christmas with the Premier now asking people to avoid going for unnecessary swabs declaring it is “putting enormous pressure on the system”.

The Premier said about 20 per cent of the PCR tests are for the requirement of interstate travel, which is also putting “substantial pressure” on NSW’s health system.

Speculation on the Ukrainian origins of Annastacia Palaczszuk has been recurrent on the blog, particularly by Roger.
My research may shed light.
While Palaszczuk decsribes herself as Ukrainian, dad Henry Palaszczuk listed himself when in Parliament as having been born in Greece in 1945 of Polish parents.
The most likely answer is that the Palaszczuk name originates from Ruthenia.
That Country was part of the Hungarian Empire until 1919 when it was annexed by Slovakia. There was a Polish Minority there historically.
Later the area was swallowed up by the Soviet Union and Ruthenia was renamed as an Oblast of Ukraine.
Problem solved.

Apparently to these smooth brained types, the clean and tidy unvaxxed present a threat. But it isn’t to their health. It’s a threat to their world view.

..
Calli comes good.
Keep that up and I don’t even care that we’re not on speaking terms any more.
Good to see you have those people nanna wrigglers finally tamed and doing good work.

But it threw the reporters & guests into a complete spin. What tha?

..
One caller to 3AW mentioned the illogic of the vaxx boosters till forever and a day had the female host literally spluttering incoherently for a full minute. Like her brain just seized. She finally said something like “I’m not going to discuss this again”.
Weird and amazing.
Will these people ever come to their senses? How will they handle it? Apologise? Pretend the last two years never happened? Go off somewhere and quietly top themselves?

I don’t do the “no talkies” stuff, Arky. Except when ignoring determined trolls.

And I still maintain that Marxism is the perfect parasite. Up until the moment it consumes its host entirely and then eats itself.

Shush.

  1. We shouldn’t trust them on ANY numbers, especially numbers that advance their narrative and their agenda. For starters… 160 000…

  2. Remember when Kristina canceled the Tillegra Dam in 2010 because reasons? I wonder if either of those proposals are based…
