In relation to a shitload of people that have quit their jobs/lost their jobs in the wake of Covid and now commit to making just enough money to barely live by… but, just enough and aren’t interested in home ownership and material things…

Difference is that it’s got the CCP worried. How will they make export grade plastic dog shit if everyone is lying flat?!

PS Speedbox.
The government might put conditions on exit if you are planning re-entry.
But if you are leaving permanently, why would they care?

It is definitely a thing.
I just went through the process of getting travel exemption for myself and my kids above 12yo. Got lucky the third time. Had to sign a stat dec that I won’t come back earlier than three months (that’s the most likely category to get the exemption).

Opponents of renaming Black Bitch pub in Linlithgow ‘receive racist messages’

Police have launched an investigation into “racist messages” allegedly sent to activists trying to stop the name of a historic pub being changed because its owners claim it is racially offensive.

Police Scotland is treating the complaints as a hate crime but said investigations were at an early stage.

Campaigners opposing a bid by the pub owner Greene King to rename the Black Bitch pub in Linlithgow as the Black Hound reported receiving emails containing racist slurs.

Locals in the West Lothian town are furious about the move saying they take pride in calling themselves “Black Bitches” and highlighting that the dog forms part of the former royal burgh’s coat of arms. They accuse the pub owner of sparking an apparent rise in racial tension in the area.

Alistair Old, who is leading the campaign, said he had attended a meeting between one of the complainers and officers from Police Scotland. He said: “There’s some really ugly stuff going around in emails sent directly to people and we’re concerned as to how they’ve been tracked down, and we’re concerned about people’s safety.”

He said Greene King had been in touch with the protest group recently to suggest alternative new names for the Black Bitch in an apparent attempt to be more inclusive.

Old added: “We keep telling them the name is not racist and we’ve proved it’s nothing to do with race but they’re saying it’s offensive and things now seem to have kicked off.”

Steve Athwal, who is Scottish-born from an Indian background and has lived in Linlithgow for 20 years, said he was more offended that someone should think he was offended.

He said: “Let’s not weaponise this. If anyone from a BAME background is offended then I say to you, ‘calm down’. This is not about skin tone, and protesting about the pub name because of the word ‘black’ makes a mockery of any serious debate about equality.”

The name of the Black Bitch in the town’s West Port dates back to at least the 17th century. The pub was originally named after a black, female greyhound that features on the town’s heraldic crest of the former royal burgh and has been commemorated by a statue in Linlithgow High Street.

Greene King, the UK’s biggest pub owner, has publicly apologised for its founder’s links to transatlantic slavery and has already changed the names of two pubs called the Black Boy and the Black’s Head.

A Greene King spokesman said: “We thoroughly condemn any racist abuse and our thoughts are with anyone subjected to this. We’re changing the name because we spoke to people who find it offensive and we want everyone to feel welcome in our pubs.

“For someone to use the name change as an excuse to send racist messages is abhorrent and we would support any police investigation into the matter. We’re continuing discussions locally on the new name.”

Still doesn’t make sense. I’ll have to go through self-funded 14 days quarantine on the way back.

BTW, their on-line application portal doesn’t even have “leaving permanently” option. The closest one is “going for three months of more”.

But that is Razey’s situation.
If he says “leaving permanently” that should be a straight tick off, right?
I mean, they are only worried about people leaving and coming back fairly soon I reckon (two weeks in Bali).
Hence the “not less than three months” was easier to get.

Anyone heard of this Lying Flat movement that’s appearing in China and other parts of the world?

Mentioned here a fair bit. Lysander, I’ll add these three articles I saw today.

Reddit’s “Antiwork” Forum Booms As Millions Of Americans Refuse Traditional Employment (9 Jan)

As the FT reports, as the labor force participation rate in the US flatlines below pre-pandemic levels, some of the millions of Americans who quit their jobs last year are finding their way to the “antiwork” subreddit.

One prominent member of this community is Doreen Ford, who quit her job long before the pandemic to start her own part-time dog-walking business.

Doreen Ford spent 10 years working in retail stores in the Boston area and hated it. So in 2017, when Ford’s grandmother suggested that she give up her traditional job altogether and leverage her love of dogs to make ends meet, she went for it. Ford walks dogs part-time, but otherwise has not held a traditional job since and says she has never been happier. “Usually, at best, [working was] pointless,” said Ford, 30, “and at worst it was degrading, humiliating and exploitative.”

As a moderator of r/antiwork, Ford has overseen the community during a massive explosion of membership, which has ballooned from 160K in October 2020 to 1.6M at the end of 2021.

These numbers have become large enough to force Goldman Sachs’ analysts to take notice: In a November note, Goldman warned that the “antiwork” movement might present a “long-run risk” to labor force participation.

“Retiring Early” Is The New American Dream: Why This Is A Problem (7 Jan)

While today’s jobs report showed another striking drop in the unemployment rate (which clearly had a political mandate, so Joe Biden could claim it was the lowest rate achieved in the first year of any president), the participation rate remained stubbornly lower, and far below pre-covid levels.

One possible explanation for the sticky participation rate is that many more Americans – boomers and Gen-Xers – are retiring earlier than expected, a shift facilitated by covid and higher asset prices.

Picking up on this tangent, in his chart of the day, Deutsche Bank’s Jim Reid shows that the expected likelihood of retiring early is now the highest on record and for the first time, the average American worker believes they are more likely than not to retire by the age of 62.

Iowa Nursing Home Operator Forced Into Bankruptcy By “Crippling” Staff Shortages (8 Jan)

QHC Facilities LLC filed for bankruptcy last week, citing “crippling staffing and employee retention issues” in a court filing. The Clive, Iowa-based company operates eight skilled nursing facilities and two assisted living homes with a total of about 750 beds in the state and 300 workers.

Having to wear stifling PPE all day, get injected with horrible stuff every six months, show your papers endlessly and be treated like dirt by government would incite anyone to find an alternative. Gearing down to earning less but being tormented less would look very attractive.

Probably worth about the same as dinner party legal advice telling you that you had a case against Johanna.

I don’t mention Johanna at dinner parties. Never wanted to take legal action against her either.
I am currently feeling very mellow towards her. Thinking about her life and her quiet little hidden plaint I noted that she would not be missed here only coming in infrequently: that is all very sad. Of course she would be missed here, she’s a fixture and far more liked than I am. Luckily, I have Hairy, who is scathing about blogs and upticking. It must be difficult for Johanna to cope with ongoing severe arthritis while working out life’s next financial step re housing and home, yet still keeping busy with motel gardening. I’d cede my place here readily to her if she really felt there was not room enough for us both.

How fortunate we are to have saintliness, condescension (in the Jane Austen sense) and intense self-absorption all available in one handy capsule.

No. That is folks giving the Party a big two-fingered salute, as far as the Party is concerned, it is China. Right down to the smallest details of culture and tradition.

As such, industriousness is no longer a traditional Confucian virtue, for example. It has become a stipulated requirement for participation in Chinese society, to the point where laziness is a Social Credit negative. And the luxuries and other ‘rewards of working so hard are just more and more hooks with which the Party and it bugmen can exert control over you.

Imagine a fascist society that penetrated deeper into all of life and living than even East Germany’s state apparatus dared to dream, and you are looking at China.

It is dissidence without actually breaking any laws.

This is why governments are so desperate to not have a prior infection as a jab exemption.
If proof of infection gets you out of it, a large proportion of the population would actively seek it out.
As someone who is sub 50 & in pretty ok health, I’d be going to the pub every night until I got it.

Covid infection will not provide jab exemption as people will therefore have a valid reason to not get a jab and a vaxx passport.

Vaxx passports are necessary for the next phase of tyranny, the digital identity system.

Judge Anthony Kelly reads out a minute agreed to by both the government and Djokovic, where he quashes the decision to cancel Novak Djokovic’s visa, orders government to pay costs, and for Djokovic to be released from detention in 30 minutes with his passport and personal effects released to him.

The reason for this is the government acknowledged it didn’t give Djokovic enough time after notifying him of the intent to cancel his visa to speak to others and respond fully.

The reason for this is the government acknowledged it didn’t give Djokovic enough time after notifying him of the intent to cancel his visa to speak to others and respond fully.

I smelt this rat earlier this morning.
One of the reasons they rushed it was that “a change of shift was coming up”.
Wut?!?
Change of shift?
Sorry.
No-one in any law enforcement role can compromise due process because it is inconvenient (ie staff shortages, broken down testing facilities, lack of availability of transport etc).
But shift change?
That is the weakest excuse of the lot.
There would be handover protocols for cases in progress at shift change.
It strikes me that we had one of JC’s fat lezzo zealots running nightshift who knew that if it wasn’t done and dusted by the time the day shift arrived, the jig would be up.

There is always one question that one really doesn’t know how to answer because the answer when aggregated gives the opposite sense of what I intend as the answer, eg how happy are you with Scummos net 0? Abject:

Judge Anthony Kelly reads out a minute agreed to by both the government and Djokovic, where he quashes the decision to cancel Novak Djokovic’s visa, orders government to pay costs, and for Djokovic to be released from detention in 30 minutes with his passport and personal effects released to him.

The reason for this is the government acknowledged it didn’t give Djokovic enough time after notifying him of the intent to cancel his visa to speak to others and respond fully.

All the pain of having your policy illogic rubbed in peoples faces

He’s calling Australia an absolute joke.

If these reports are true, then we are more than an absolute joke:

Novak Djokovic’s court case began in a farce with technical glitches and even porn being streamed on the broadcast as users hijacked the public live stream.
Members of the public were able to tune into the court hearing online via a link but it seems the servers couldn’t cope with the number of people logging into the live feed as it crashed several times.

To begin with an old link to broadcast over Microsoft Teams hijacked with pornographic pictures and techno music before an alternative livestream set up by Federal Court staff crashed when the world’s media tried to log in.

If that wasn’t confusing enough, some people who could access the hearing posted unauthorised links on YouTube, which made it difficult to determine whether streams of the hearing were in fact live.

On a bit more reflection I think it’s interesting the poll seemed carefully crafted not to appear like a politics poll (which is what it was). It started unpolitical and got increasingly political with an eventual “who did you vote for in last election” question maybe 20 minutes in. Now that may be because the Libs are funding it from government dosh, or perhaps they’re having trouble getting respondents to political polls. Not sure which, although embracing the cleansing flavour of “and” could be plausible too.

This appears to be the judge’s rationale, if The Oz is correct
The government acknowledged it had not given Djokovic enough time to make his case while he was being held after arriving in the country.

The decision to revoke Djokovic’s visa was “unreasonable”, because Djokovic had been told, at 5.20am on January 6, that he could have until 8.30am to respond to officials.

The call to cancel the visa happened before that deadline, at 7.42am, robbing Djokovic of time he could have used to “consult others” and make further submissions on his own behalf.

i.e. procedural. No ruling on the important issue of 6-month immunity after having covid.

Been reading back on The Conservative Woman and struck a story about nepotism and council housing.

What was interesting in the comments was how people from the UK said that (just like here) public housing degenerated from being provided to poor people who wanted to better themselves to those who are now described as ‘vulnerable’ – the mentally ill, alcoholics and druggies, chronic criminal offenders and so on.

And, just like here, people were moved into often shoddy high rises, with poor if any maintenance. You know, fogged up double windows, chronically broken down lifts, urine and feces and syringes in the stairwells, that kind of thing.

Initially, UK public housing was updated terrace houses – 3 bedrooms and a bathroom, a front and back yard. But then the towers took over.

In context, the slums in Britain’s big cities were appalling. While the Empire boomed, people in those cities lived in squalor. In the 1920s, there were shared water pumps and privies in London Liverpool, Birmingham – and as for Scotland – shudder.

If you look at the huge ‘stately houses’ in England and Scotland, they make the follies of our tech gurus look like dollhouses.

If you consider what it would have cost to build and staff them in today’s prices, maybe one or two of the top guys could afford it, in a world where there is a lot more money.

The UK ruling class has done a great con job for centuries, drama and television on hand. The latest is that Boris’ FIL is getting just short of a million pounds a year for windmills on his country estate.

We should… the government should… always reserve the right to decide who is allowed to enter the country and not a fucking court.

The Parliament has the right to make immigration laws.
“The government” i.e. the bureaucrats have to implement the laws. And they have to implement the laws the way they’re written, not the way they’d like them to be or the way any politician wants them to be.
And in a case like this the Courts’ job is to interpret the laws properly and then determine whether the bureaucrats have carried out the administration of the laws properly.

JC, if you’re advocating for a legislative regime which makes it easier for would-be entrants to get punted, I agree in principle although I think we all know that it would in practice be used to shut out high profile conservatives and not be used to shut out grievance-mongerers, voteherds or population ponzi scheme TAFE students.

But the legislative regime is what it is, at least for the time being.

As best I can tell the Court hasn’t even said that the bureaucrats don’t have power to punt Djokovic, but only that the bureaucrats didn’t bother to go through the legislated process, and so weren’t validly exercising the power even if they do have it.
I don’t have a problem with the decision per se, irrespective of the result. The Court was doing the right thing (or at least trying to) by insisting that the bureaucrats obey the law. If Parliament gives them power only to do things in a prescribed way, they shouldn’t be allowed to impose restrictions on people in any other way.

No.

Try again.

The Lying Flat issue in China should be seen in relation to the 996 work life. I don’t blame them for Lying Flat. What’s the point of living like that?
Perhaps people are bowing out of the rat race because they have accumulated enough or are fed up with all the unpaid overtime.

Our Colesworth, in inner city Brisbane, is the pretty much the same. Also apparently getting thin on bread and veggies.

So it looks like the indie supply chain is somehow faring better than Big Grocery’s.

As best I can tell the Court hasn’t even said that the bureaucrats don’t have power to punt Djokovic, but only that the bureaucrats didn’t bother to go through the legislated process, and so weren’t validly exercising the power even if they do have it.

Okay, very good, thanks for the explanation.

The facts of the case wont be considered by average Joe.

The only thing average Joe will know is that the government lost, and the Joker won.

Eat shit you government scum.

Newsflash to those having a meltdown: VIC alone has granted hundreds of exemptions to arrivals on the basis of recent prior infection. A few months ago DHS extended their criteria from being within the last 3 months to within the last 6. The only difference is people didn’t know.

On double-sided sticky tape. Some of that stuff is extremely strong.

Example – Command hooks. I have one of the big metal ones for the Christmas wreath that I hang on the front door. It’s one of those finger-crushing pivots in timber and glass, enormous and heavy. I didn’t want to knock a pin into the timber and damage it, so on went the hook – stuck to the glass.

The wreath is heavy and loaded with pine cones and flowers and other Christmas finery. The breezes here are strong. But the thing never moved.

On the 6th, down it came. The wreath was easy – unhook. The “command” hook was disobedient and took much…much effort and scraping and elbow grease to remove from the glass. Which, in a way, was reassuring. I’ll use it next year too.

I reckon Eyrie’s advice is best – there must be adhesives that will do the trick. But just make sure the glass is clean for a good bond, and let the stuff cure.

There’s about 74,000 Serbian Australian residents (2016 Census) so that’s about another 74,000 votes that Morrison won’t get. He’s doing a better job at destroying the Liberal Party than his predecessor.

The largest enclave is around Liverpool in Sydney’s west. Isn’t that part of Craig Kelly’s electorate?

Which would explain Craig Kelly’s apology to Novak with Serbian subtitles.

You mean that if we don’t offer consistency we couldn’t be trusted financially etc? I can see that aspect, but I’m not suggesting we should remove it. It’s just that I don’t believe it should be held as a right by foreigners. I’m not sure what the exact term is, but constitutional rights are extended to foreigners in the US, but it’s not a right in the same way that these rights are held by citizens. There’s some term that I forget, but it’s something like it’s extended as a gift.

More than that, non-citizen’s rights are explicitly protected in several of the Amendments.

This would go to the founders’ belief that some – but not all, e.g. voting – rights are due to be recognised simply by being a human being.
