I’ve only driven through West Virginia, very beautiful but a hard place to live, a couple of my friends grew up there.
Coal miners’ daughters, now in North Carolina.

Hoping to visit in late 2022.

Cite you the factoryhand who lost the first two fingers off his right hand, and didn’t realize the loss, until the time came to say “goodnight” to the foreman..

I met a British Army officer in London, whose party trick was to shake hands, while watching the face of the person he was greeting. As a result of an unfortunate incident in Northern Ireland, his right hand consisted of a thumb, index finger, and about half of his palm. An unusual sensation!

Rex, I just heard something on the radio about the east-west rail line is closed in SA due to flood damage. Have you heard anything about that?, it’s possible that the radio announcer was talking about something in the past.

Nope, that’s current.

Flooding cut the Trans-Australia line between Port Augusta and Tarcoola last week. And it took out part of the Stuart Highway, too. Eyre Highway is open for the time being.

Comservative estimate to rebuild the washaways and reopen the line was about 7-12 days. And that was assuming the access roads dried out enough to get the earthmoving equipment and ballast in.

It would be uncharted/ interesting territory if enough states proved their results were shaky.
The result can’t change and the courts dealt themselves out of it in cowardice.

There would be no official remedy and if the Repubs had the house they could effectively block everything citing possible illegitimacy.

Very interesting times.
Biden would be reduced to ruling by presidential order and if a supreme dropped off the twig I couldn’t see any replacement being approved.

It seems that the chronology for the Karen’s makes them mainly generation X. A cause for some great shame really, I always thought that generation were quietly keeping out of things.

Well now, here’s Philip Larkin.

Church Going

Once I am sure there’s nothing going on
I step inside, letting the door thud shut.
Another church: matting, seats, and stone,
And little books; sprawlings of flowers, cut
For Sunday, brownish now; some brass and stuff
Up at the holy end; the small neat organ;
And a tense, musty, unignorable silence,
Brewed God knows how long. Hatless, I take off
My cycle-clips in awkward reverence,

Move forward, run my hand around the font.
From where I stand, the roof looks almost new-
Cleaned or restored? Someone would know: I don’t.
Mounting the lectern, I peruse a few
Hectoring large-scale verses, and pronounce
“Here endeth” much more loudly than I’d meant.
The echoes snigger briefly. Back at the door
I sign the book, donate an Irish sixpence,
Reflect the place was not worth stopping for.

Yet stop I did: in fact I often do,
And always end much at a loss like this,
Wondering what to look for; wondering, too,
When churches fall completely out of use
What we shall turn them into, if we shall keep
A few cathedrals chronically on show,
Their parchment, plate, and pyx in locked cases,
And let the rest rent-free to rain and sheep.
Shall we avoid them as unlucky places?

Or, after dark, will dubious women come
To make their children touch a particular stone;
Pick simples for a cancer; or on some
Advised night see walking a dead one?
Power of some sort or other will go on
In games, in riddles, seemingly at random;
But superstition, like belief, must die,
And what remains when disbelief has gone?
Grass, weedy pavement, brambles, buttress, sky,

A shape less recognizable each week,
A purpose more obscure. I wonder who
Will be the last, the very last, to seek
This place for what it was; one of the crew
That tap and jot and know what rood-lofts were?
Some ruin-bibber, randy for antique,
Or Christmas-addict, counting on a whiff
Of gown-and-bands and organ-pipes and myrrh?
Or will he be my representative,

Bored, uninformed, knowing the ghostly silt
Dispersed, yet tending to this cross of ground
Through suburb scrub because it held unspilt
So long and equably what since is found
Only in separation – marriage, and birth,
And death, and thoughts of these – for whom was built
This special shell? For, though I’ve no idea
What this accoutred frowsty barn is worth,
It pleases me to stand in silence here;

A serious house on serious earth it is,
In whose blent air all our compulsions meet,
Are recognised, and robed as destinies.
And that much never can be obsolete,
Since someone will forever be surprising
A hunger in himself to be more serious,
And gravitating with it to this ground,
Which, he once heard, was proper to grow wise in,
If only that so many dead lie round.

A favourite poem of Christopher Hitchens. And of me.

IIRC, a very junior Yamamoto lost a finger at Tsushima.

Didn’t he warn the pollies in Tokyo his guys would run riot in the Pacific for a couple years, then the Americans would obliterate them?

His estimate was six months, which is almost precisely the period from 7 December 1941 (Pearl Harbor) to 6 June 1942 (Midway). Coral Sea was a setback, but not a disaster, so it doesn’t count towards the estimate.

Auntie Bet, who was more embracing of my childhood idiosyncrasies than most. Yes – they were of “darkish” skin, but it never occurred to me – and nothing was said at the time – that they were of indigenous background. Both lovely women, with none of the “bitchiness’ of the other side of the family’s women!

Have a relatives like that, however your description reminded me of one of them. She was particularly like that and is still asks after all her nieces and nephews years later. I never knew any indigenous connection till I was an older adult and she has apparently denied it. Only then I put 2 & 2 together with hers and the other relatives from that line olive skin and features none of the rest of the family have. That is why I despise this recent them and us rubbish.

(* NIV uses a style called ‘dynamic equivalents’ to render the Greek and Hebrew into colloquial English. It’s useful also to confer with the Strong’s Concordance notes for each verse to get a grasp on whether the translation is fully accurate. Sometimes it isn’t.)

“West Virginia”
A poor state, settled by Ulster men and women…..Scots Irish.

I’ve been reading Don Surber for at least a decade. He was a veteran journo at the Charleston Gazette-Mail where he had this newfangled thing called “a blog”. Lurked for years until Uhlmann (or maybe Brissenden, I forget) did a hit piece on WV (squalor, misery, drugs etc), which I alerted Surber to. Led to some fun. But then the Gazette went proto-woke and fired Surber for dastardly rightiness. Whereupon he started his blog which has gone wonderfully.

So memo to Dot, if you move to WV don’t do so to the capital, which is a tiny lefty ghetto in a sea of red. Instead move to some place like Poca, where Surber lives.

Fake news blacklist

In 2019, Poynter used various “fake news” databases (including those curated by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, Merrimack College, PolitiFact, and Snopes) to compile a list of over 515 news websites that it labeled “unreliable”. Poynter called on advertisers to “blacklist” the sites on the list. The list included conservative news websites such as the Washington Examiner, The Washington Free Beacon, and The Daily Signal. After backlash, Poynter retracted the list, citing “weaknesses in the methodology”.[26] Poynter issued a statement, saying: “We regret that we failed to ensure that the data was rigorous before publication, and apologize for the confusion and agitation caused by its publication.”[27] Reason magazine says that in May 2019, the Poynter Institute was forced to retract a List of 500 Fake news Sites, many of them conservative news and Think tank websites, when it emerged that the list in itself was unreliable as it had been written by a Southern Poverty Law Center Podcast Producer.[28]

He said that there were five or six freight trains per week coming into Perth, each with around 120 carriages stocked with items for our supermarkets, so we should expect shortages of a lot of items. I thought that was good news, I really liked those supermarket fights for the last roll of toilet paper.

Dératisation is my French word of the day.

When I was looking for a place to stay most of the airbnb near the port/in the old town were fourth floor walk ups, which me and my suitcase did not fancy so I opted for a more modern building with a lift.
As it turned out it was a ground floor but well above the old city, the ‘rue’ to get there is actually a 140 step staircase plus either another 40 step staircase and a steep road or just more steep road to get there. But my host picked me up from the railway station and is driving me to the ferry port so not so bad.
The steep road has a section of broken footpath where I had my first rat encounter, there is clearly an extensive and well excavated nest underneath. I even have a photo of a rat looking out their emergency exit after I shooed them the first time we met. Then as I walked further up, I could see more rats milling around under the big rubbish bins and as I approached they slinked into gaps in the stone wall behind.
No doubt the rats think the human inhabitants are the perfect Uber Eats delivery service.
I’ve seen the odd rat in Europe before and they are a problem at home, because of the creek, but I’ve never seen such numbers, especially in broad daylight.
I suspect most residents in the apartments don’t notice because they all drive in and out.
Anyhow I told my hosts, who live in the apartment above, and they have notified the mairie who are now have ‘dératisation’ in course.
I’ve been imaging someone jackhammering the broken section of the footpath to repair it, and dozens of rats making a hasty exit.
I won’t be here to see if that happens. 🙁

He said that there were five or six freight trains per week coming into Perth, each with around 120 carriages stocked with items for our supermarkets, so we should expect shortages of a lot of items. I thought that was good news, I really liked those supermarket fights for the last roll of toilet paper.

That’s just SCT, who do palletised and parcel stuff for the supermarkets, Big W and so forth. And latterly freight forwarders Sadleirs and now BlueScope Steel. Pacific National run 2-3 trains in each direction daily into and out of Perth. Covering motor vehicles, Aurizon/Linfox freight, Lindsay refrigerated transport (produce) and all manner of other internal and export freight traffic.

They come in usually in the wee hours of the morning, through to breakfast time. The hotshots to Sydney and Adelaide leave in the mid-afternoon to early evening out of Kewdale, and there are 2 more trains fully assembled and lined up next to each other at the yard mouth for departures around 8pm and 11pm-1am every night. It’s a heck of a sight to see.

All the interstaters are about 1800 metres long and about 110-20 wagons (The official numbers will vary- Many of the container flats and double-stackers are actually 4-5 platforms with common bogies, joined by solid drawbars and counted as a single wagon) with 2-3x 4,000HP locos in the lead.

What concerns me is that the emotional reaction on the right to the “the big steal” and this is no different to the Democrat dummy spit after 2016. I find it embarrassing and I think people should focus on the future.

I think you’re right, but for one detail.

The Dems were angry in 2016 because they didn’t get away with it.

The ending is ambiguous and gone in a flash. I won’t spoil it should you decide to watch. Not sure what Du Maurier would make of it.

You will never own me .

Trust me Custard, even I wouldn’t bid for you at the slave auctions.

Everyone knows who I am.

I don’t. I think you once posted your name and then went back to this silly blog name. I don’t and really don’t care as I’m sure most people here feel that way too.

No one or very few knows who you are.

Okay

You are just an anonymous internet troll.

GFY.

Sure, but what’s that got to do with explaining your theories? This is really a very stupid comment. Your supposed name recognition compared to me has zero to do with your unprecedented theories theory. You’re delusional.

The 2020 election results aren’t going to be reversed BUT it’s absolutely essential to autopsy the hell out of that utter shitshow. The fact that the Dems have been fighting savagely to block any efforts to investigate the multiple problems with the election is a pretty clear signal that there’s something they want to hide. The propaganda barrage has been unprecedented. You’d be crazy to stop digging.

Finding out what happened during the 2020 election isn’t being transfixed on the past, or being backwards-focused. This will have enormous consequences for future elections.

Gauloises and Gitanes, the cigarettes we smoked back in year 12, thanks to my best mate, who always thought himself way too sophisticated for our ‘umble suburban surroundings …

Their corrupting influence is perfectly illustrated in this photograph*, courtesy of the Giuranaid …

Of course it does.
Study it.
Learn from it.
Try to prevent it happening again.
But if Donald runs in 2024 bitching about The Big Steal he will lose bigly.
And really lose (not just stuffed ballot boxes).
Firstly, it will come across as being all about him.
Secondly, it projects as being about the past with no vision for the future.
These are the sort of attitudes which cost Hillary in 2016.

OCO

We’ll never know what happened in 2020 because as time passes it will be impossible. We do know that Fuckerberg spent US$400 million plus on vote harvesting and ensuring ballots were left in the street so they could be further gamed.

The problem with US elections is that there’s no audit trail. You can be therefore be 100% certain that under these circumstances there will be cheating. This is possibly the biggest single problem the US has. Elections can be gamed until the system can be audited and there’s not much going on to mend the system. It’s diabolical.

Um no

Now I don’t think that Trump should harp on a great deal about the stolen 2020 election if he runs in 2024. There will be far more productive things to talk about. However, if he runs, he’ll be running against a party that nominated Hillary, the most disliked woman in the world, and felt utterly assured she would win in 2016. In 2020, the party nominated a drooling vegetable and then blatantly cheated to ensure he won. (What could possibly go wrong?) In 2024, they’re probably going to put up some empty suit like Buttjudge.

After a term of Biden, Trump could bitch about just about anything he wants in 2024 and win without breaking a sweat.

We may not know exactly what happened but it should definitely be possible to uncover enough wrongdoing to put the result in doubt in the minds of a critical mass of the population.

The Dems were angry in 2016 because they didn’t get away with it.

That would explain Mrs. Clinton’s “Flowers in the Attic” style meltdown on election night.
She was livid that they’d believed their own bullshit about Trump’s unpopularity & consequently not arranged for Santa to deliver enough votes to nullify the scale of the Trump win.

There is a bigger structural problem.
That is, the voting conventions of the Electoral College.
With the exception of Maine and Nebraska (fuck all EC votes anyway) all other states have a “winner takes all” system for allocating EC votes.
So, the 30 EC votes in Florida can turn on 500 individual votes stuffed in a box in Upper Bumfuck West.
Remember Hanging Chad?
If the EC votes were more proportional, fixing would become infinitely harder.

The punters already know. I mentioned it to the halfwit Custard that 59% ,in a Rassie poll, believed the election was bullshit.

Trump would win in a laydown if he did one thing and one thing only. Trump needs to tell the punters that he would fix elections once and for all.
