You need to think this through. How long does it take to fill an IC car? How long does it take to charge an EV? What proportion of the population will not have access to home charging? What percentage will need charging away from home?
Unless the plan is for a lot fewer vehicles on the road, the demand for charging stations is more likely to go up.

I have an inside friend at Qld Health payroll.
People are getting “backpay” for being misclassified on their initial employment.
They got paid for the job they did 9-5, but if the hiring manager ticked the wrong box and put them down as shift workers (not as a day worker) and therefore were “entitled” to allowances going back years.
These people did not know they were owed anything (they weren’t) nor that the money was coming.
Highest payout to one individual last week was for $127k net.
This was just dumped in their pay last week. Has been going on for a few weeks and there have been many payouts of similar size and many smaller too. Millions paid out.
Now people who missed out by being classified correctly want their share too.

Indeed. Just as ‘service stations’ morphed from what we all remember 40+ years ago to what we see today, those sites will change again over the years. Huge numbers of people will need charging facilities away from their home as about 33% of homes in Australia are rented (about 3.7 million properties) and landlords are unlikely to install chargers. In addition, there are more who own an apartment but on-site charging isn’t possible. All up, probably around 5+ million properties. That’s a lot of properties, people and cars!
‘Servos’ will change and offer sit-down facilities, light meals, drinks etc whilst you wait for even a fast partial charge (say, 20 minutes). And the servos won’t be able to draw all the necessary power from the grid – they will need their own generation capacity, at least to some extent, which means battery storage from which the cars will draw.
Shopping centres will offer similar except charge your car whilst you shop.
Sure, this is years away, but every major retail fuel company (Shell, BP, Exxon, Repsol, Total and a stack of others) are investing in charging technology companies.
I made the point to JC a year ago that when the new blog started, he had the opportunity to become an assett instead of an arsehole.

Eleven years ago a fella by the name of Arkadiy Dubovoy hatched a devious plan to game the American stock market, by breaking into a weakness he’d spotted – and that was the newswires that carried company announcements.
Dubovoy was an interesting person – he had a background in finance, and was also a Slavic Evangelist Baptist pastor, with a sizeable congregation of followers at his church.
We’ve all seen stock exchange announcements before – usually dry documents but chock-full of info that investors need to know so they can make informed choices about when to put money in, and when to pull money out.
From time to time, companies issue announcements that can fundamentally change the value of their stock – for good or for bad – and those documents need to be prepared, and then filed somewhere to be released at a certain time, so everyone gets that information all at once.
And that’s where Dubovoy spotted the weak link – the newswire services handled the announcements for Wall Street where the information was stored for a few hours, waiting to be published and released at the appointed time.
Dubovoy and his team of money-hungry miscreants broke into several of the major newswire services, and had advance warning of major, market-shaking news, often hours before anyone else and he had another team of people start to buy shares – effectively insider trading from the outside.
Of course, they got greedy and the whole thing came crashing down around them. And when it did, prosecutors said that the team had been working from inside the hacked news wires for more than 5 years, and had made over US$30 million using more than 100,000 stolen documents.
Seven people got pinched, seventeen bank and brokerage accounts were seized along with fifteen properties including a houseboat, a shopping centre, and an entire apartment building.
