You could apply the same argument to Israel Folau.

No, there’s no way Israel will touch Syria. The Assad regime suits them. Assad’s Syria might be nasty but it’s a hell of a lot better than the Sunni Muslim Salafists and ISIS that were running around Syria between 2012 and 2017 beheading, raping and enslaving Christians, Yazidis, Druze, Shiites and Alawites. Say what you like about Putin but it was Russia that stepped in to defeat ISIS whilst the West, under Obama, stood by and did nothing, and in fact armed some Islamist terrorist groups.

Because the losses would be catastrophic. Israel periodically bombs places in Syria, always telling the Russians beforehand. I remember a conversation with an Israeli who fought in the Golan in 73 and he said that the Syrians are good fighters, unlike the Egyptians. The Alawites who run Syria are a subsect of Shia Islam, which is why they have close ties to the Iranian regime. I think Israel looks to contain Iranian malevolence in places like Lebanon and Syria whilst opening up diplomatic ties with Sunni countries like the Gulf states in order to wedge Iran.

Cassie – That looks likely to me. One thing people forget is that Syria and Israel are actually still in a formal state of war, since Syria never made peace since 1967. I think that suits Israel well since it legally allows them to splat Hezbies and IRGC critters when necessary. Which is often. But they’re pretty careful to avoid doing much damage to Syrians where they can help it.

On another forum I have been on they had the ability to “mutually ignore” people so they could not interact with each other. They could only post after logging in and once logged in could not even see each other’s comment. If not logged in could see the comments. I doubt this blog can do this.
However a simple way would be to impose a 1 or 2 day ban if one made a post aimed at the other or even reacted to the others comments.
I know this will come as an outrageous suggestion but might be worthy of consideration.
Naturally JC would be opposed to such a suggestion as he wants the situation to continue for years to come.

I doubt very much if Israel would want to poke around in Syria. Any intervention would mean conflict with Iran and that wouldn’t be pretty. What Israel wants are peace treaties like they have with Egypt, Jordan and other countries. In the meantime they’ll tolerate Assad in Syria, because as nasty as he is, his regime is secular.
