I just watched Gonzalo Lira’s Roundtable 22 with Larry Johnson in the USA, Brian Berletic in Thailand and Alex Christof0rou in Cyprus. The discussion mainly centred around the Ukraine conflict and what will happen post the referendum.
It was a two hour talkfest, the most interesting moment was when Gonzalo had to switch his microphone off due to air-raid sirens in the background, he’s stuck in Kharkov, Ukraine.
The main takeaway was that once the referendum is completed and the Duma incorporates the occupied territories in Russia (assuming the populations vote accordingly), any further attacks on the civilian population in the newly occupied regions will be viewed as an attack on Russia itself.
If such an attack occurs then Russia can activate some joint military protection plan it has with former soviet states and they can then attack the Ukraine in force to end to this war. Of particular interest, this could mean that Belorussia then also becomes an active party which will open another front in the war. Ukraine would then find itself facing hostile forces in the south and east, and Belorussian forces in the north.
Poland is also rattling sabres to regain former Polish territory and cities including Lviv, this could get really messy.

The Parliament shall, subject to this Constitution, have power to make laws with respect to the composition, functions, powers and procedures of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.
The first issue is where in the constitution will this amendment be situated. Prior to the 1967 referendum the Australian constitution gave legislative power to parliament to make laws with respect to “[t]he people of any race, other than the aboriginal race in any State, for whom it is deemed necessary to make special laws” (section 51 (xxvi). This meant that the Commonwealth could not make special laws for the Aboriginal people, except in the Territories. Aborigines were a subject for State laws.
In 1967 the words “other than the aboriginal people in any State” were struck out. As a consequence, the Commonwealth gained the power to make special laws for the Aboriginal people (Native Title laws are an example).
The point is the parliament already has a constitutional right to make laws about and for aboriginals. It already can receive advice from any 3rd nations group or groups in respect of the making of those laws, which it does in spades. The Voice amendment is therefore redundant. So, what the fuck is going on.

She began to walk away and the eggnog chased her and became visibly angry after telling him she felt it was a racist comment and didn’t want to continue.

The obvious, quick and dirty amelioration – or at least partial amelioration – of Germany’s pending energy crisis is to get Nordstream 2 operational and transporting at least some gas. If the Russians keep that chip on the table, the Germans will negotiate with the knowledge that they can always fall back to starting up Nordstream 2 – okay, on crappy terms, but at least they know won’t go cold for a winter, and they’re negotiating on that basis.
Well, what if something happens to Nordstream 2 that decisively takes it off the table, and suddenly there’s no safety net for the Germans? They’re going to change their approach, perhaps.
It would make sense for Russia to close off that avenue.

I noticed up thread some discussion of Rudd. Almost a week out, so I can now process the horror – I spent almost three weeks on tour with a man who not only looked like, but sounded exactly like Kevin Rudd. And with the same politics.
The first night, I said to the Beloved, “Close your eyes and listen. What and who do you hear?”. Once heard, it could not be unheard. The falling, condescending cadence, the certainty of correctness, the lack of curiosity in others’ thoughts…it was all there. We had to avoid each other’s eyes lest we collapse in hysterics…or worse.
Three weeks of Programatic Specificity. No wonder I’m now sufficiently recovered to speak of it.
I have come to a sad conclusion – unless you are prepared to spend a huge amount of money at swanky restaurants – no one here can actually cook. Anything. Not even a salad.
No wonder they all shoot across to the Continent on el cheapo air fares. It’s for sustenance.
Directed to an “excellent” fish n’ chips in Whitby, the Beloved and I partook of a meal of such hideousness that most was left on the plate. Battered fish swimming in grease, soggy tasteless chips, fishcakes the consistency of wallpaper paste.
How do they manage it? Are there classes?
British “cuisine” ceases after breakfast. No wonder the most popular dish here is Chicken Tikka Masala.

Visited “Aidensfield” today, otherwise known as Goathland. And Hogsmead station. And, just like the tv series, the little steam engine toiled its way around the bend and up the long slope to the station with a puff of soot and a stream of steam. I stood on the overhead bridge and filmed it all.
The moors are fascinating – a vast, acidic man-made landscape. Neolithic man, seeking land to cultivate, cut down swathes of primeval forest and planted crops. Over time the pH changed and the land became unproductive. So another section was cleared. On and on over the centuries. Heather, an acid lover, colonised the dead soil. Animals adapted and thrived.
I wonder if our ruinous solar and wind farms will be viewed the same way centuries hence? Will we be forgiven, or simply passed off as primitives?
