For all we know, it might be as simple as the coppers doing a “car changeover” just before “knock off”. I think I read that one of them was heading off on holidays at the end of his shift. Might have been a convenient location, there was a job booked in nearby, so it made sense.
Pure conjecture on my behalf. But I visited a mate today who has a couple of hundred acres about 20km out of town (his son is a copper in some sort of “Quick Response Group” based further out West). There are are two adjoining properties of 100 acres either side of him. A Detective lives one side, a general duties copper the other side.
According to my mate, it’s very common for coppers to live outside of the area they police (especially on rural acreage or in nearby towns). Makes sense. You don’t want to be living over the side fence of the people you are employed to arrest. Especially in rural areas.
From that perspective, a “car changeover” seems plausible. Welfare check required on the computer, location suits both parties on their way home and the shift is done.
Hell, we’ve all done it. Drop offs, pick ups. Whatever’s most convenient.
There could well be a totally innocent explanation as to why 4 coppers were doing a simple “welfare check”. It seems blindingly obvious they were totally unprepared for what came next.
Sometimes in life, you can simply be in the “wrong place at the wrong time”.

After that I think it was gloves off. The police say they gave the three people time to give themselves up. I give them the benefit of the doubt about this, because that is what all training says theys should do. However, I have no doubt that there was a strong element of hope they don’t surrender in the minds of police, who as normal humans would have felt a need for retalliation for their own losses. Given the demonstrated proclivity of the three Trains to chase and kill both police and a bystander, escalation by the Trains to the point of them deciding on a ‘heroic’ death seems the most likely scenario.
I have had experience of calling in police for welfare checks simply, as KD says, to avoid the possiblity of finding an estranged loved one decomposing inside, and of having a psychiatric woman call in police for a welfare check on my grandson due to her demented nightmare visions of something happening to him. This resulted in police waking up my grandson aged ten from sleep at 11.30 at night in a safe environment; they had to do this by law to check he was ok and report back to his demented mother. I am as horrified as anyone else at the actions of many police during lockdown; but this doesn’t mean all police are ill-intentioned and many do vital community services.

If anything could have been done differently, then it was at the command level that blame lies where a little investigation of the cultist background of those with whom the brother in question took shelter could have helped. Cultists driven to the edge gotta cult and hold out beyond all humanity and good sense or respect for life. I come to this site as someone who wishes to work within the political sphere to retain and regain freedoms under threat, not to take up armed and piecemeal resistance. I think it might be doing Dover a favour if more of us explicitly say so. I reject calls to political gun violence or to be part of encouraging that, although it is understandable as an emotional response; put into action beyond the political sphere of institutional change the result is what we saw on the ground in the backblocks of Queensland. The same thing happened to that poor fellow who shot back at a meddling inspector of green compliance re his own land. He shot and killed a man, and had to take the consequence of it.
