Only a beaten, listless mass of sheeples can truly believe that an endless torrent of ever-creeping legislation enacted by a body of lying sociopaths is a common good

Humanity never learns, it seems.

Repetition, rhyming, nothing awakes the vast bulk of them from their instant gratification fuelled torpor.

Strolling around with Wifey this afternoon in inner city Melb, we saw about 30 cops, standing around or talking with shop and bar owners. It looked really intense.

I asked a cop what was going on and he obliquely responded that there was a “targeted incident” last evening in the area and that they were asking people if they saw anything.

When I got home and took a look at the Age. (first time in years)

This happened.

A 53-year-old man who was shot dead while walking along a Melbourne street near a popular nightlife area was associated with organised crime, police have revealed.
?The shooting on Almeida Crescent in South Yarra about 11.40pm yesterday was a “targeted attack” on the man, who lived in the suburb, Crime Command Detective Superintendent Geri Porter has confirmed
Porter said the victim was with another man and had just been to the gym when a number of shots were fired at him.

and

He suffered life-threatening injuries and died on the way to hospital.
Porter said the man who was with victim at the time of the shooting had since been refusing to provide police with information, and that police believed the shooting was linked to a car found torched in Rowville today.

We assumed date night meant you and Driller were dating, You look adorable in that blue dress. Bald but cute.

Guiseppe the Harasser, Haranguer, Pursuer can’t get me out of his head and the reason for this is when there was/is full-on warfare, he has never been able to beat me.

Appears to be the other way round, madam doxxer. We know it was you. Also, it’s fun getting you to Defcon 1 in an instant. You’re so highly strung.

Not once. .Now, of course, he has an Everest sized grudge he has to haul around. He cannot handle being mocked and ends up in a simpering mess on the floor.

We already know precedent has been established so slime your way to Dover’s email account and demand I am banned or you will withhold funds.

What anti anxiety tablets are you taking, Kez? Frankly, if I were Dover, I’d ban you for constantly suggesting he’s on the take. What a disgusting retard you are and have always been

That’s you goal, isn’t it, you rapacious writhing blob of

Writhing blob of excrement? Aren’t you taking this adjective thing a little too far, you trailer-trash heap of human junk.

Kez, you’re not exactly setting the world on fire with massive intellectual heft here, nor the previous blog. Outrageously outraged comments just go stale over a short distance, you angry old sad sack
But please stay, as I find you uncertain outrageous outrage amusing.

Sometime, when you have a spare moment in your busy schedule, you could explain to us how you get through life so angry at the world. Really, it would be interesting reading.

How’s it go again.

You, you won’t beat me, you, you hear!

I highlight this:

Aug 5, 2023 6:52 PM

The ‘Truth’ is that we live in a post truth world where lying and believing in lies is perfectly acceptable and encouraged, especially amongst the wealthy overlords.

According to David Brookes it’s the professional class, Razey. The business/ Entrepreneurial types are busy trying to make a quid and live their lives.

Of all people, David Brookes from the New York Times wrote about exactly this. He identifies with the professional class, but the light is beginning to switch on is fat head.

Here’s the piece.

What if We’re the Bad Guys Here?

David Brooks

Opinion Columnist

Donald Trump seems to get indicted on a weekly basis. Yet he is utterly dominating his Republican rivals in the polls, and he is tied with Joe Biden in the general election surveys. Trump’s poll numbers are stronger against Biden now than at any time in 2020.

What’s going on here? Why is this guy still politically viable, after all he’s done?

We anti-Trumpers often tell a story to explain that. It was encapsulated in a quote the University of North Carolina political scientist Marc Hetherington gave to my colleague Thomas B. Edsall recently: “Republicans see a world changing around them uncomfortably fast, and they want it to slow down, maybe even take a step backward. But if you are a person of color, a woman who values gender equality or an L.G.B.T. person, would you want to go back to 1963? I doubt it.”

In this story, we anti-Trumpers are the good guys, the forces of progress and enlightenment. The Trumpers are reactionary bigots and authoritarians. Many Republicans support Trump no matter what, according to this story, because at the end of the day, he’s still the bigot in chief, the embodiment of their resentments and that’s what matters to them most.

I partly agree with this story, but it’s also a monument to elite self-satisfaction.

So let me try another story on you. I ask you to try on a vantage point in which we anti-Trumpers are not the eternal good guys. In fact, we’re the bad guys.

This story begins in the 1960s, when high school grads had to go off to fight in Vietnam but the children of the educated class got college deferments. It continues in the 1970s, when the authorities imposed busing on working-class areas in Boston but not on the upscale communities like Wellesley where they themselves lived.

The ideal that we’re all in this together was replaced with the reality that the educated class lives in a world up here and everybody else is forced into a world down there. Members of our class are always publicly speaking out for the marginalized, but somehow we always end up building systems that serve ourselves.

The most important of those systems is the modern meritocracy. We built an entire social order that sorts and excludes people on the basis of the quality that we possess most: academic achievement. Highly educated parents go to elite schools, marry each other, work at high-paying professional jobs and pour enormous resources into our children, who get into the same elite schools, marry each other and pass their exclusive class privileges down from generation to generation.

Daniel Markovits summarized years of research in his book “The Meritocracy Trap”: “Today, middle-class children lose out to the rich children at school, and middle-class adults lose out to elite graduates at work. Meritocracy blocks the middle class from opportunity. Then it blames those who lose a competition for income and status that, even when everyone plays by the rules, only the rich can win.”

The meritocracy isn’t only a system of exclusion; it’s an ethos. During his presidency, Barack Obama used the word “smart” in the context of his policies over 900 times. The implication was that anybody who disagreed with his policies (and perhaps didn’t go to Harvard Law) must be stupid.

Over the last decades, we’ve taken over whole professions and locked everybody else out. When I began my journalism career in Chicago in the 1980s, there were still some old crusty working-class guys around the newsroom. Now we’re not only a college-dominated profession; we’re an elite-college-dominated profession. Only 0.8 percent of college students graduate from the super-elite 12 schools (the Ivy League colleges, plus Stanford, M.I.T., Duke and the University of Chicago). A 2018 study found that more than 50 percent of the staff writers at the beloved New York Times and The Wall Street Journal attended one of the 29 most elite universities in the nation.

Writing in Compact magazine, Michael Lind observes that the upper-middle-class job market looks like a candelabrum: “Those who manage to squeeze through the stem of a few prestigious colleges and universities in their youth can then branch out to fill leadership positions in almost every vocation.”

Or, as Markovits puts it, “elite graduates monopolize the best jobs and at the same time invent new technologies that privilege superskilled workers, making the best jobs better and all other jobs worse.”

Members of our class also segregate ourselves into a few booming metro areas: San Francisco, D.C., Austin and so on. In 2020, Biden won only 500 or so counties, but together they are responsible for 71 percent of the American economy. Trump won over 2,500 counties, responsible for only 29 percent. Once we find our cliques, we don’t get out much. In the book “Social Class in the 21st Century,” the sociologist Mike Savage and his co-researchers found that the members of the highly educated class tend to be the most insular, measured by how often we have contact with those who have jobs unlike our own.

Armed with all kinds of economic, cultural and political power, we support policies that help ourselves. Free trade makes the products we buy cheaper, and our jobs are unlikely to be moved to China. Open immigration makes our service staff cheaper, but new, less-educated immigrants aren’t likely to put downward pressure on our wages.

Like all elites, we use language and mores as tools to recognize one another and exclude others. Using words like “problematic,” “cisgender,” “Latinx” and “intersectional” is a sure sign that you’ve got cultural capital coming out of your ears. Meanwhile, members of the less-educated classes have to walk on eggshells because they never know when we’ve changed the usage rules so that something that was sayable five years ago now gets you fired.

We also change the moral norms in ways that suit ourselves, never mind the cost to others. For example, there used to be a norm that discouraged people from having children outside marriage, but that got washed away during our period of cultural dominance, as we eroded norms that seemed judgmental or that might inhibit individual freedom.

After this social norm was eroded, a funny thing happened. Members of our class still overwhelmingly married and had children within wedlock. People without our resources, unsupported by social norms, were less able to do that. As Adrian Wooldridge points out in his magisterial 2021 book, “The Aristocracy of Talent,” “Sixty percent of births to women with only a high school certificate occur out of wedlock, compared with only 10 percent to women with a university degree.” That matters, he continues, because “the rate of single parenting is the most significant predictor of social immobility in the country.”

Does this mean that I think the people in my class are vicious and evil? No. Most of us are earnest, kind and public-spirited. But we take for granted and benefit from systems that have become oppressive. Elite institutions have become so politically progressive in part because the people in them want to feel good about themselves as they take part in systems that exclude and reject.

It’s easy to understand why people in less-educated classes would conclude that they are under economic, political, cultural and moral assault — and why they’ve rallied around Trump as their best warrior against the educated class. He understood that it’s not the entrepreneurs who seem most threatening to workers; it’s the professional class. Trump understood that there was great demand for a leader who would stick his thumb in our eyes on a daily basis and reject the whole epistemic regime that we rode in on.

If distrustful populism is your basic worldview, the Trump indictments seem like just another skirmish in the class war between the professionals and the workers, another assault by a bunch of coastal lawyers who want to take down the man who most aggressively stands up to them. Of course, the indictments don’t cause Trump supporters to abandon him. They cause them to become more fiercely loyal. That’s the polling story of the last six months.

Are Trump supporters right that the indictments are just a political witch hunt? Of course not. As a card-carrying member of my class, I still basically trust the legal system and the neutral arbiters of justice. Trump is a monster in the way we’ve all been saying for years and deserves to go to prison.

But there’s a larger context here. As the sociologist E. Digby Baltzell wrote decades ago, “History is a graveyard of classes which have preferred caste privileges to leadership.” That is the destiny our class is now flirting with. We can condemn the Trumpian populists until the cows come home, but the real question is: When will we stop behaving in ways that make Trumpism inevitable?

It’s an article of faith that Vietnam Veterans, disappointed with the response of the R.S.L. to mental and physical ailments, formed the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia – they set up a counseling service specifically for Vietnam veterans that went on to become “Open Arms.”

However, it seems more veterans joined the R.S.L. then joined VVAA – more again joined neither.

The first comment regarding refusing cancer treatment was ftb, I responded by mentioning a couple of relatives who’d done so, I think Win made a comment and then you chimed in.

It has now been reframed several times to include children’s cancers,

Or maybe those other discussions have nothing to do with you.
It’s not as if cancer has never been discussed here before.
Incidentally the ‘reframing’ ie independent comment re childhood cancer was duk, JC and SP, John H I and a couple of others responded.

Liv Tyler is luminous. Also has excellent manners. Her Southern Grandmother took no prisoners when it came to manners.

Have you seen Liv’s first film, Stealing Beauty? You could see a brilliant future ahead of her. She completely outshone Rachel Weiss who was also in the film.

Who knew Japan were working on an atomic bomb too?
phillip adams Follow @phillipadams_1 phillip adams

The Weekend Australian Magazine
12:00AM August 5, 2023
4 Comments

Born a few weeks before the outbreak of World War 1I, I was six years old when the Enola Gay dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima. A child of the atomic age, my nickname at East Kew Primary was Adam Bomb.

Talking to Ray Monk about his biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical phycisist known as “the father of the atomic bomb”, my memories came rushing back. Including the memory of something Japan has preferred to forget, and wants the world to forget: the inconvenient truth that Japan, as well as the US and Germany, was working on the A Bomb. How do I know this? Because a bloke called Teddy Conant told me.

Here’s the essence of the story. As a child, Ted was bounced on Einstein’s knee. His father, James B. Conant, held many senior positions in US academic, military and diplomatic life, including the presidency of Harvard and as his country’s first ambassador to West Germany. Having worked on the grim science of poison gas he would, years later, play a key role in the Manhattan Project. Conant witnessed the first Trinity detonation and was a member of the committee that advised President Harry Truman to bomb Hiroshima. Later, from a change of heart, he would oppose the development of the hydrogen bomb.
Read Next

Forty years ago Conant’s son Teddy, who looked eerily like Jerry Lewis’s nutty professor, was working for me – heading a team refining a unique Australian 3D system for film and television. Kerry Packer was our financier. We had R&D teams working in five cities. We were flying to visit technicians in Tokyo when Teddy dropped the metaphoric bombshell – quite casually informing us that the Japanese had been working on the bomb. I was incredulous, disbelieving. This was unknown to the wider world – and to those of us who regarded the US bombings as war crimes.

On our arrival, Teddy introduced me to an ex-journalist friend who had been researching Japan’s secret nuclear program for a book that was never published. He played us wire recordings of interviews with Japanese scientists who confessed their involvement, even though the program hadn’t been wildly successful. I heard him ask an ancient Japanese general the question, “Would you have used it?” The answer was chilling in its simplicity. After a laugh, “Of course!”

This changes nothing and everything.

Critics of the decision to bomb Japanese cities argue that that it did not hasten the end of the war (Japan was already defeated), that the atom bomb should have been demonstrated to the world in the desert rather than deployed, and that its real purpose was to frighten the USSR – to effectively declare the Cold War.

What seems clear to me is that the fact of a Japanese nuclear project at very least changes perceptions about Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Yet nobody knows about it, least of all in modern Japan. Those who did know about it are long dead. Including my friend Teddy. But it’s part of the story of Oppenheimer, now being retold in Christopher Nolan’s film epic.

The nuclear club has nine sovereign members, with almost 13,000 nuclear weapons in the global stockpile. The Doomsday Clock is back at seconds to midnight … lest we forget.

On the Big Pharma debate and the claim that these companies are somehow deliberately manipulating the market for childhood cancer drugs.
That is, they develop drugs for “management” vs drugs for a “cure”.
This assumes that:-
1. Drug companies have a cure but are suppressing it; or
2. They could develop a cure but don’t do so for commercial reasons.
Suppression of a Cure?
What odds a Pharma has a cure and are suppressing it?
Well, they’d have to keep it off patent. Imagine the outrage if they patented a cancer cure but didn’t release it? But they then run the risk of someone else patenting it.
Commercially, what is the benefit of suppressing a known cure in favour of long term management drugs?
Well, they are not that “long term”, and certainly not perpetual. As JC says, they all come off patent after a finite period.
So, they’d have to weigh the Discounted Cash Flows of the immediate payment for the cure, vs lower 10-20 year incremental payments for the “management” treatment (knowing that it could be rendered worthless at any time by a competitor’s cure).
Given that we all know Big Pharma can strong-arm governments, how much do you reckon they would charge to put a silver bullet cancer cure on the PBS?
$250k?
$500k?
More?
Diversion of Resources Away from Research for a Cure
Given the immediate and immense rewards that would accrue from bringing a cure to market, why would these avaricious companies do that?
They weigh the risks and returns of everything they do. If they saw a pathway to a silver bullet cure, they’d take it.
Not just for the rewards.
Remember, this is a two-edged sword.
If they hold back when they see a clear path to a cure, they would know that someone else will surely steal a march.
This whole illogical and unsupported assertion relies upon the erroneous assumption that Big Pharma is a single entity acting in unison.
It is not.
As JC says, there are scores (if not hundreds) of VC pharma minors and university based research outfits who would quite happily turn themselves into instant billionaires by developing a cure.

Cats – this night’s Radio Show is likely not to be posted on its own thread.

So here it is anyway:

Rabz’ Radio Show August 2023: Cars

There has always been an intimate link between cars and contemporary music and car stereos (aka sound systems) enable the immediacy of that link.

As the (almost) ultimate freedom machines, cars can enable a young man to impress an aesthetically pleasing young woman in more ways than might be immediately obvious.

There are so many songs that are about cars I’d barely be able to scratch the surface.

However – there is an insidious agenda intended to deny these wondrous freedom machines to the “common people”.

Electric Vehicles are a joke. Expensive, impractical (see the concept of “range anxiety”) and possibly lethal when not in use (another novel concept) our self-declared betters have not been shy about decreeing that the proles will use EVs, bicycles, public transport, or resort to good ol’ walking. Or else.

The Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicle is in danger of extinction if these ridiculous totalitarians have their way. The plan is to tax, legislate and starve ICE vehicles out of existence.

We must not allow this to happen.

Anyway, not wanting to let the lunacy impede our enjoyment, here’s my two song choices for this month:

The most awesome coda in the history of car related songs:

Gary Numan – Cars

Why we love them so much:

The Triffids – Wide open Road

No doubt there’s a whole library of memorable songs that you’re just waiting to post in the comments thread. Incidentally, I’ll be heading off tomorrow (weather permitting) on my favourite drive in Oz – the various roads through the Royal National Park, culminating in lunch at the newly refurbished Imperial Hotel in Clifton.

Eggsactly. Permanent cure or management treatment, if the final 20 year payout is the same, Pharma don’t give a shit.

I don’t know these days, but years ago there were a similar discussion. I looked up the rate of return and these big pharma firms make around 15% return on equity capital. It’s a decent return, but not spectacular.

Notwithstanding it looks like another ‘no child will live in poverty by 1990’ moment, take note of the wording – cancer will be conquered by *managing* it, not by *curing* it . Yet another tell on big pharmas business plan – drugs for life makes money for life, curing illness dont.

The other issue is that some people must know about this cure. The discoverers would be the among most famous people in history. Do we really think they would keep that secret hidden as their friends and loved ones died from cancer and deny themselves to be among the most respected people in human history?

I’m not having a go at you Sancho but I am having a go at anyone who thinks such a discovery could remain hidden.

My suspicion is that Big Pharma makes money off prescriptions. Viagra, antidepressants, cardiac medications, diabetes drugs etc. So before we even look at the financials, and I know we can’t do this, shouldn’t we first determine where the big bucks are being made?

There’s no mystery in all this. These firms work things out on a spreadsheet. How much will this medication cost to bring it to market and can it make an expected return on capital over the expected life of the med. It doesn’t matter to them one way or another if the med is for ongoing treatment or a cure. There’s no mystery here because every freaking business in the world, large or small, works this way.

What’s the cost. Can I get my money back over the estimated life. That’s it.

My point was that is where they make the big bucks, not cancer treatments.

A firm that came up for the cure for Hep C for big bucks.

There is no vaccine to prevent hepatitis C, but medical innovations in recent years mean that oral treatments can cure most people. However, these newer drugs have a high cost that can make paying for hepatitis C treatment difficult.

and

Medication pricing is complex. When new medications hit the market, they are more expensive than older ones.

The medications do not have competition from other drug manufacturers, and pharmaceutical companies can control their distribution.

Over time, as companies release competitor medications or the medicine is available as a generic drug, the competition usually drives the market cost down.

Also, the smaller the demand for a specific treatment, the higher the cost is of that medication. This is because pharmaceutical companies have to make more money per unit, as they will be selling the medication to fewer people.

Hepatitis C is a condition that affects approximately 3.5 million AmericansTrusted Source, with as many as half potentially unaware that they have the infection, according to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The fact that hepatitis C is a condition that affects millions of people should mean the drugs cost less. Even so, current treatment regimens can be very costly.

The cost, FMD

Ledipasvir-sofosbuvir (Harvoni): The average wholesale cost for Harvoni is $1,125 per pill. An 8-week treatment course is $63,000 while a 12-week treatment course is $94,500 and a 24-week one is $189,000.
Simeprevir (Olysio): The average wholesale cost for the medication is $790 per 150 milligrams (mg) capsule. A 28-day supply costs $22,120, and a 12-week supply costs $66,360. Sometimes a doctor will prescribe this along with the medication sofosbuvir, where a 12-week course of treatment for both medications totals about $150,000.
Sofosbuvir (Sovaldi): This medication costs $1,000 per 400 mg pill. The total cost for a 12-week course is around $84,000, and doctors will typically prescribe it with other medicines, such as simeprevir.
Ombitasvir-paritaprevir-ritonavir and dasabuvir (Viekira Pak): The cost for this medication is $83,319 for a 12-week treatment course. The cost for a 24-week treatment course is $166,638.

I suspect this is where we’re heading. There will be cures for cancers and all sorts of crap, but the price is going to be and has to be huge.

This is where the inequality rubber is going to meet the road.

I’m not having a go at you Sancho but I am having a go at anyone who thinks such a discovery could remain hidden.

I am in agreement.
It is a preposterous suggestion that it could remain suppressed.

The other issue is that some people must know about this cure. The discoverers would be the among most famous people in history. Do we really think they would keep that secret hidden as their friends and loved ones died from cancer and deny themselves to be among the most respected people in human history?

No.
If a small group knew about it at Company X, one of them could jump ship to Company Y and claim ir (or walk into a Patents Office Monday morning and register it individually).
What are his former colleagues going to say?
“Yeah. That was ours. But we were sitting on it.”
Just not credible.

My point was that is where they make the big bucks, not cancer treatments.

They probably do.
But let’s say they have a division dedicated to cancer treatments, completely separate from statins, BP meds, diabetes drugs.
They would do the same risk-reward DCF calcs on “cure” vs “manage” drugs.
Truth is, they don’t see a payoff in the pursuit of a cure, because the chances of developing the ‘silver bullet’ are so low.

The WSJ was talking about this a while ago. Some of these expected cancer cures are being discussed at US 500K.

Our friend had metastasized bone cancer. She was on meds that were costing Medicare around 50K a year which went on for about 7 years.

This can’t be supported on the national insurance unless there is a substantial hike in the levy, I can’t see this happening. So it will possibly end up as a charge against superannuation accounts or one’s pocket.

Big bucks.
But there would be enormous pressure to at least subsidise them.
I mean, if we are really talking about a one-off, cured, gone forever solution it would be yuuuge.
In fact, it was also a pretty silly assertion to say that Pharma companies are looking to get childhood cancer sufferers on “long term management” drugs.
The brutal truth is, most aren’t on them long term.

I get that. It is a difficult problem for them though because they explore so many different approaches. Each is a potential learning opportunity but weighing that financially must be so difficult. There are potential silver bullets for specific types of cancers but not for cancer in general. However a news report just a few days ago does point to an approach that may have benefits across a number of cancers.

Several years ago a group of scientists, led by Paul Davies, came up with a fascinating approach. They argued that cancer cells reflect the re-emergence of an ancient replication pathway. I can appreciate the novelty of the idea and given the massive chromosomal derangement(aneuploidy) that is so common in cancer it is conceivable that the usual constraints on gene transcription(methylation and acetylation) are lost and hence the cells behave more like single celled organisms dividing as often as possible. The oncological community dismissed the idea, to my knowledge it has not gained traction, but at least it represents an interesting approach to the challenge.

One thing I do wonder about with this young woman – she is ‘off’ testosterone but having had her ovaries and uterus removed, I do hope that she is being given menopausal hormonal therapy now. It isn’t mentioned but it would be necessary.
For these poor girls caught up in this cruel medical nonsense and now wanting out of it, a very good endocrinologist is a necessary consultation point early on and later.

I find it really hard to comprehend those Liberals, particularly the two women, who voted against Pauline Hanson’s wish to have the issues of physically ‘transitioning’ children brought before a Senate enquiry, especially given the new medical accounts now arising internationally.

Yet today, two friends waiting on the floor near to me for the start of our dance class, whom I know and find very nice people, when briefly discussing books read recently, said how they didn’t enjoy J.K. Rowling’s latest because of its anti-trans ‘agenda’. After all, they said to each other, with me caught silently located in the middle of their exchange, it’s terrible what parents go through with unkind people being nasty when all they are trying to do is to help their poor child to become the sex they really are. These women live in a Teal electorate, voted Teal and have been influenced by Teal propaganda. The class started before I had time to say anything to them.
