What’s your take on Bjelke-Petersen

He aggressively looked after Qld’s interests. Qld prospered when Joh was in power. He had a healthy loathing for the media and didnt hide it. And Russ, he got sh*t done, so his sins can be forgiven. Joh was hugely popular in Qld and the rednecks loved that.

In the 1970s, he actually refused to take Commonwealth grants – un-heard of (see ‘never come between a Premier and a bucket of money’) because they had strings attached.

He could afford it because of good economic management and abolishing death duties and the resources boom.

It was brilliant. It made the other Premiers look like toadies, and it gave the Commonwealth two fingers about controlling Queensland via bribes.

They were completely flummoxed. They didn’t have a clue how to deal with him. Like Trump, he broke the rules of engagement and left the opposition flailing helplessly.

I can’t comment on his local performance as Premier – wasn’t living there – but when it came to dealing with the Commonwealth, it was a masterclass.

Milt, I have to say, whatever Russian civil institutions survived the Soviet era and briefly spluttered into life following 1990s have been either suborned by Putin (the church) or suppressed.

Most countries don’t have aborted coups against the regime when they’re fighting a popular war for a beloved leader

Disgruntled mercs don’t make a coup, dotty. Only in the bubble of your pea sized brain.

China is the only state seriously considering a partition of Russia.

The breaking up of Russia has been the US wet dream since the fall of the USSR. Brezhinski has pumped this for all he is worth, along with all the neo-con establishment. For decades.

Russian elections are a joke- much like the US elections.

Put down that bong dotty.

No, I’m not. Unlike you dotty, I have some experience living in that part of the world.

It’s like the 1 million plus (mostly young men) military age Russians who left in 2022 don’t have a valid opinion or skin in the game.

There are 300,000 Russians now who can vote Democrat.

25,000 soldiers moved 500+ km to March on the capital and had no resistance until the capital guards dug in for a no bullshit fight.

The breaking up of Russia has been the US wet dream since the fall of the USSR.

No one seriously wants to do this other than China. Russia has existed roughly at its current borders for at least 300 years, really at least 700 years as an ethnic based country.

Name a single American who published or was caught out secretly plotting to do this.

Hamas reportedly refusing to let foreign nationals leave the Gaza strip.

Foreign Nationals?

Unlikely

They are Dual Citizenship types who conveniently became foreign nationals when the going got rough. I’ll wager that Hamas despise them.

Probs a few Dual Australian citizens in there, but nothing like the 25,000 loyal citizens who popped up for help in Lebanon some years ago, Dual Australian/Lebanese.

A good rort for sure, but they possibly waited too long to run.

**Should they be rescued and by whom?

Constitutional enshrinement was all about placing the Aboriginal Industry outside Parliament and ensuring it couldn’t get ATSICed.

The intent was to create a new aristocracy.

The intent was a taxpayer funded coup to thwart the will of the people – and to prevent any possibility of government by any party other than Labor/Greens.

I have to say, whatever Russian civil institutions survived the Soviet era and briefly spluttered into life following 1990s

The “spluttering” was hell for Russians, for nearly a decade They made the serious mistake of following US grifters (economists) who profited enormously from “cold turkey capitalism”. The backlash to that chaos and turmoil was the era of the oligarchs who raped the place. To help restore “order and stability.”

The Sauce in the Herald Sun:

Veteran journalist Stan Grant had plenty to say in the weeks before the Voice referendum.

Working in Denmark, he said, he found himself referring to Australia’s “noise” around the Voice as “mean”.

The former ABC star hasn’t added much to the said clamour since the referendum — until now.

As Monash University’s Constructive Institute Asia Pacific inaugural director, Grant will deliver an opening lecture at an Australian National University leadership forum on Monday night.

In his reflections of the vote, called The Witness of Poetry, he will say that he still feels “the noise”.

And in breaking his silence, Grant advocates the place of silence.

“I know the language of the op-ed column, words written for effect,” he will say.

“Words written with an audience in mind.

“I know the performative parry and thrust of the television interview too often an exercise in gotcha and evasion…”

“There is a time for debate. And sometimes amidst the noise there is even insight. But there is a place for silence. Sacred silence.

“It doesn’t mean we should not keep striving for good journalism but it had better be good, because we are competing with silence.”

Say no more.

He cannot resist the kavorka of other people’s money.

Mackay Chapman has taken the action against five auditors who had signed off on the SMSFs belonging to clients of Melissa Caddick. It is understood capital losses of around $12m are claimed, relating to 24 funds representing around 50 investors.

Via the Oz.
This is great news.
It was my view that at least one of the accountants who fed one or two of the auditors was in on it.
But considering there would be have been a paper trail re money & no action has been taken, I’m prepared to say that is unlikely.
Dumb accountants.
Incompetent auditors.

Blowing Up Russia contains the allegations of ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko against his former spymasters in Moscow which led to his being murdered in London in November 2006. In the book he and historian Yuri Felshtinsky detail how since 1999 the Russian secret service has been hatching a plot to return to the terror that was the hallmark of the KGB. Vividly written and based on Litvinenko’s 20 years of insider knowledge of Russian spy campaigns, Blowing Up Russia describes how the successor of the KGB fabricated terrorist attacks and launched a war. Writing about Litvinenko, the surviving co-author recounts how the banning of the book in Russia led to three earlier deaths.

I lived under the Joh regime for four years in the mid-1980s in Gladstone.

He definitely helped those who voted National. I do recall seeing a full page ad in the local paper, which showed a large empty plot of land, and a sign erected at the front of it. The sign read “Want a new police station? Vote National.”

He took on the electrical union who were having “load shedding” – read short blackouts – at the time. It was a disgraceful tactic and from memory Joh beat it.

I’ve tried a few neck pillows, including pricier ones, my regular pillow is much better, even if I just hug it and lean forward in the seat, even better if you have a window seat.
I also take hydralyte before I fly and drink loads of water to counteract plane dehydration, which I think it part of the reason for plane wreck.

British, US and other citizens (of whom obviously virtually none would be white anglos) are just bargaining chips like Gazans are.
I saw an interview with a woman called Stephanie from Leeds who was probably a dinkum pom but she’d married a Gazan and was apparently living in Gaza City so her children could learn Arabic, something you obviously can’t do in the UK.
I think one of the First Minister’s rellie’s is a white Brit too.
I don’t much care, you go to a place run by terrorists, who regularly fire rockets at the people next door, against travel advice, you should not be surprised when it gets a bunch crappier.

This is one of the reasons that I think we should never support “capitalism”. Once a company becomes big enough, the strong tendency is towards crony capitalism.

We should support free enterprise, but not the animal that develops into crony capitalism.

And tax rates on mega companies should be higher than the rates for small and medium enterprises.

890,000+ wounded Russians. Verifiable on public records of compensation payments.

Lets see what others say.

UK Intelligence – 23/10/23 – Russian total casualties of 150,000-190,000 + 50,000-100,000 temporarily wounded (can return to battlefield).

Armed forces of Ukraine – 18/10/23 – Russian losses total 290,050 KIA, WIA, MIA. (a weirdly specific number)

Your data source appears to be Kyiv Post. https://www.kyivpost.com/analysis/22929 which in turn is using European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) paper from February 2023. That document estimated “the ratio of casualties to deaths for Russia and Ukraine are 3:1 and 5:1, respectively” based on a report published on Telegram by Mozhem Obyasnit which referred to draft 2024 Budget Papers.

Mozhem Obyasnit is a fringe media ‘outlet’ that was linked to Olga Tsukanova, who headed the Council of Wives and Mothers but was designated a foreign agent after distributing foreign agent materials in May 2023.

Draw your own conclusions on the veracity of their claim.

I was born in Kingaroy and lived there for my first decade. Joh was especially popular in his home town and few were brave enough to speak against him.

With five children, one suffering a serious bone disorder and another spectacularly accident prone, my parents appreciated Joh’s Golden Casket, a form of lottery which covered hospital fees for all Q’landers. Aaand actually, because they had private cover, they were paid when one of their clumsy kids ended up in the ward.

My appendicitis op was tricky and resulted in fortnight in hospital. With the proceeds of the Golden Casket cover, plus private insurance, Father bought a brand new petrol lawn mower, thus launching my brothers into their first paid career.

From The Oz….

Foreign Minister Penny Wong has urged Israel to listen to its allies and protect innocent lives in Gaza, saying: “civilians on both sides have been murdered.”

“We do think it’s critical for Israel to ensure it does everything it can to protect civilian lives and to respect international humanitarian law,” Senator Wong told ABC radio’s Sabra Lane on Monday.

“We are seeing loss of life. We are seeing civilians on both sides have been murdered.
“When Israel’s friends urge Israel to protect civilian life, as we have, it is critical that Israel listens.

A few words for Senator Wonk…

1. Your statement that “civilians on both sides have been murdered” is UNTRUE and you know it to be UNTRUE. No Gazans have been murdered by Israel or Israelis. In the last few weeks Gazans have died but this is NOT Israel’s fault, it is the fault of Hamas in Gaza. On 7 October 2023, Hamas terrorists planned and carried out an invasion of southern Israel, murdering over 1400 Jewish men, women and children in cold blood, butchering them, burning them alive, defiling their corpses and kidnapping Jewish men, women and children into Gaza, where they REMAIN. So, hear this Senator Wonk….

YOUR MORAL EQUIVALENCE IS OBSCENE, BUT THEN AGAIN, YOU ARE OBSCENE.

2. As for your cheap, hollow words “Israel’s friends”…well yes, Israel should engage and listen to its friends, but you and your government, as displayed by your tactics since coming to power in May 2022, ARE NO FRIEND OF ISRAEL OR THE JEWISH PEOPLE.

3. Finally Senator Wonk, go be a lesbian in Gaza, and see how long you last. I’ll get my popcorn ready, you disgraceful individual.

Finally, I’ll repeat what I wrote above, Wong, Sleazy and his motley government are obscenities and are a stain on this country.

just because … reasons

01 since it has been source of great intrigue for some, particularly JC who's spazzed out about it now more than once before
02
03 I will tell you why I personally don't bother much with proper capitalization and sentences
04
05 maybe this will help to settle down The Cartel's speculation boners
06
07 it's because I predominately work as a programmer in machine specific languages
08 I have about 5 that I'm fluent in to varying degrees and all of them have their own naming conventions
09
10 camelCase, PascalCase, snake_case, and even SCREAMING-KEBAB-CASE
11
12 so anyways, I got sick of having snippets of these conventions randomly sneaking into my posts
13 easy to happen, as it all looks normal to me
14 that, and the endless and pointless rigor of trying to make posts to the forum look neat like a job application
15
16 at some point just went bugger it, I cant be bothered
17
18 so I used my own convention ... you can call it empty_case
19 actually couldn't care less what you call it
20 same way I rarely give a shit about typos
21
22 I've developed rules for it too:
23 proper names at the beginning of a sentence are capitalised (except sancho )
24 mostly, where possible, one thing per line
25 if there's a full stop on the end of that line, it shouldn't be there. I typically backspace them out simply because the semi-colons in Java shit me
26 multiple sentences per line? ... refer to line 25
27
28 A guest post, that's different ... I will try to do that in relatively normal written English.

Bolt – sooo much better with the pen than the teleprompter:

Saturday the 28th marked three weeks since Hamas proved once again that it is a modern iteration of the Manson Family, minus the Beatles soundtrack and consensual sex.

Calling it the “start of the battle” implies a military confrontation, but Hamas’s war is against defenceless civilians and it is conducted by a leadership that poses as victim even as it incinerates infants.

Charles Manson used to play the same pity-seeking game. Everything was someone else’s fault and everyone deserved payback for being mean to innocent little Charlie.

“Remorse for what?” Manson once told an interviewer. “You people have done everything in the world to me. Doesn’t that give me equal right?”

That’s basically the entire Hamas creed: no honesty, no perspective and no regrets. Like the Manson Family, Hamas deserves no future.

Give the TV game away. This is your medium, and always has been.

Gosh, no such concern for Bruce Lehrmann’s mental health due to his cases being linked to media coverage and associated social media commentary……………

Court blocks media naming Channel 7 personality on child abuse charges

Magistrate Aaron Simpson cited concerns for the woman’s mental health linked to media coverage of the matter and associated and social media commentary.
By MACKENZIE SCOTT

A Brisbane court has ruled a Channel 7 personality charged with multiple child sexual offences cannot be named unless they are committed to trial.

Richland’s Magistrate’s Court granted a non-publication on identifying the woman despite changes being made to Queensland laws this month to allow media to name people facing abuse sexual abuse charges before the case is sent to trial.

Magistrate Aaron Simpson cited concerns for the woman’s mental health linked to media coverage of the matter and associated and social media commentary.

The woman faces 37 charges of indecent treatment of children aged under 16, rape, sexual assault, torture and assaults that allegedly occurred between 2005 and 2023.

Changes to Queensland have already led to former liberal staffer Bruce Lehrmann being revealed to be the high-profile man facing alleged rape charges in Toowoomba, while Ashley Paul Griffith was named as the childcare worker who allegedly raped and abused 91 girls over a 15-year period.

Magistrate Aaron Simpson said a mental health assessment, completed by a psychiatrist following a suicide attempt in September, found the woman’s mental health had deteriorated, leaving her “at risk of making a life-ending decision if confronted with any more adverse reporting naming her in this case”.

Nine Network’s news program A Current Affair confronted the woman in a supermarket car park with a camera crew in October, which caused her to have a panic attack and left her feeling unsafe in the community. The medical assessment found the incident has left her unable to sleep, hypervigilant and anxious.

“Coupled with the knowledge that media personnel continue to approach her in a similar manner, the release of her identity to the broader public poses a significant destabilising factor upon her mental state and more so, her capacity for judgment and reasoning,” the psychiatrist wrote.

“As such the risk of intentional self-harm and/ or suicide remains high.”

Mr Simpson labelled the reporting by A Current Affair and social media comments related to the story as “appalling and dehumanising”. While he acknowledged that “all media outlets should not be punished because of the conduct of one media outlet or individual commentators”, the magistrate granted the order due to the woman’s “special vulnerability”.

“The (mental health) report established that the defendant is not someone trying to hide behind a mental illness; she is a fragile person that is a risk to herself,” Mr Simpson said.

Israel attack reveals the dangers of reliance on artificial intelligence Israel attack reveals the dangers of reliance on artificial intelligence

With islam you imagine the worse possible and then go further. People have forgotten or ignore the fact that islam is a true eschatological ideology, a death cult. Virtuous death is the highest status it can offer: 72 virgins and rewards to families if their offspring suicide jihad. Islam regards non-muslims not just as inferior but vermin to be eradicated. The hamas dogs who invaded Israel viewed the Israelis are less than cockroaches. When you understand that you understand islam.

Bolta doing a good interview with Jordan Peterson because he is shutting up and not interrupting the great man. Peterson has set up a pro Western think tank to promote Western values, The Alliance for Responsible Citizenship (Arc), which has upset the usual left wing shitheads.

The problem with such groups is that they still think reason and conversation will convince or at least defeat the left, islam and the commies. Unless they are hyper litigious and have a big supporting group of muscle to back them up they’ll go no where like every other pip pip group has in the past. The only thing which defeats the left/islam is brute force.

“The losses are staggering. The fronts have barely moved. Ukraine however have breached the Dnipro. “It was just a feint!” carries on.”

Yes Dot, the front has barely moved.

Despite being told by Putin himself in Feb 2022 and by Surovikin when he was promoted to Theatre Commander in Oct 2022, this is not a “land grab” by the Ivans.

There were three stated aims for this SMO,
1. De-Militarization of Ukraine,
2. De-Nazification of Ukraine, and
3. Take over Lughansk and Donetsk, to protect them from the continuous attacks by the Ukraine Army, since the democratically elected Govt was overthrown in 2014.

The unfortunate story for the Ukrainians is that the Ukraine Defence Force has played right into the Russians hands, by smashing themselves against very strong Russian defences, not only in the failed Spring/Summer/Winter offensive, but also in the ridiculous holding on in Bakhmut.

The clown puppet did however, say that Bakhmut was of no importance.
Odd thing to say, but fair enough.
Didn’t the clown puppet present a “signed Ukraine Flag” to the combined Congress, in the US?
If Bakhmut, was unimportant, then, did he hand over a flag that meant nothing at all?

“Now we’re going to get a lecture how F-16s are bad planes (LOL, literally the most successful modern multi role fighter plane) and how the joke Black Sea fleet (sunk by a far inferior force) somehow still exists.”

So, you are actually saying to all who read this blog, that, in your opinion, an F-16 is the equal of a modern fighter.
I would ridicule that statement mercilessly but, there is no need.

Hamas must have been planning the attack for months and it probably took years to smuggle all those weapons into Gaza. Hamas did nothing to prepare the civilian population for what they must have known would involve military strikes and deprivations in Gaza. No stored fuel, no stored food, no prepared shelters and underground hospitals. It would have been much easier to import and hide those provisions than thousands of missiles. Biden didn’t control the situation, the US military did. Stop using individuals as scapegoats for institutional failure.

I’m not anything and if I were, it would be a poor excuse for a magic trick. Perhaps you need a little schooling as you may have forgotten. The US president is the commander in chief and therefore the buck stops on the desk in the Oval Office.

So what?

You obviously forgot the argument. I suggested the Russian military is filled with incompetent nincompoops and you brought up the US leaving Afghanistan as some sort of argument. If you going to irrelevantly bring that up, I suggested it would be a good idea to think how 2500 Russian troops would hold up in exactly the same circumstances. That’s your, so what.

Sure, sure, making alloys, etc. along with steel is really low-tech, as is making jet engines and the like, even so, we’re no longer talking about a farming community.

Ukraine has a comparably outsized farming sector. It’s huge at around 13% of GDP. It’s a farming country. Australia’s by way of comparison is around 2.5% of GDP. The US is about .7% of GDP. That’s point 7. Canada’s is 3.4%. These three are also farming countries exporting agricultural surplus. So, if you don’t think Ukraine is a farming country, you need to review your biases.

Again, so what? They are a part of the productive economy of Ukraine.

I never suggested it wasn’t a productive part of the Ukraine economy. Why are you even heading down this cul de sac.

Just to regroup, this started because I mentioned the fact Russia’s has had it’s arse kicked by a country with about a third of its population and an economy even less than a third smaller.

After 7 October, I dragged out Simon Sebag Montefiore’s Jerusalem – the Biography from the spare room. I read it about two years ago, but took it back out because topical.

It is magisterial. A historical masterpiece from the city’s beginnings to its many sackings over thousands of years and dozens of conquests.

If the millennia of history associated with this city is any guide whatsoever (and I would suggest it is), then Jerusalem will endure, regardless of the privations forced upon it by its enemies.

It really is a fascinating read. The Maccabeans in particular kicked serious arse.

NB: Having read it, this does not make me an expert on Judaism, Jewry or the Torah.

The problem with such groups is that they still think reason and conversation will convince or at least defeat the left, islam and the commies.

Conflict exists even in contexts where there is normally a shared value system and a high level of co-operation toward achieving mutual goals. Like a happy marriage, for example.

How absurd is it that people think individuals or groups with no shared value system, common beliefs, or desire for mutually agreeable outcomes, can simply ‘talk and make peace?’

This ‘give peace a chance’ schtick is based on the belief that one or both sides (normally one; a western/Caucasian ‘oppressor’) takes the stance they do because of ignorance. Resolve that ignorance (often via coercive means), and those in error will realise how wrong they were and capitulate. Thus making everyone happy.

I sometimes wonder how humans managed to become the dominant species on the planet.

I sometimes wonder how humans managed to become the dominant species on the planet.

By virtue of conquest.

The ‘give peace a chance’ movement was born of affluence.

When threatened with extinction, all the ‘human rights’ for all these different interest groups will be thrown in the fire, as will rules of engagement.

A thousand, two thousand years ago this was par for the course. If you were defeated, everyone you liked or loved died – if extremely lucky and deemed valuable*, the survivors were enslaved.

Not since the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, when the Thirty Years’ War ended has there been a conflict where the losers faced (effectively) wholesale extinction.

Ultimately, it depends on will, and whether you’re prepared to accept that others – or other countries – might say bad things about you. After you’ve won.

Small price to pay, I reckon.

2. De-Nazification of Ukraine, and

Total failure.

Ukraine is the most militarised zone in the world and has been for nearly two years, Rusich and the Russian Imperial Movement are not banned in Russia and have a following in the military.

Almost 10% of the civilian casualties in the Donbas War were foreigners from MH-17 which was shot down by Russian SF posing as “patriotic Novoroyssians”. Both sides suffered civilian casualties. It is the Russian military which has unashamedly indiscriminately killed civilians, more psychological projection ensues.

Yanukovych and his allies were caught red handed rigging Parliamentary votes. There was no secession vote. Russian soldiers just “turned up one day” posing as Ukrainians – after destabilising the area for a couple of years prior into a state of lawlessness.

The funny thing is the Trump – Zelensky phone call exonerates Trump from the accusations Biden made about him regarding Ukraine. More projection, like peas in a pod. As the hot mike showed in 2012, the Dems and Putin/Medvedev were always in cahoots. The senile sniffer even gave Putin a green light to SMOO his way to Kyyyyiv.

From The Australian:

A Brisbane court has ruled a Channel 7 personality charged with multiple child sexual offences cannot be named, citing fears for her mental health, despite recent changes to Queensland laws.

What?

Just days ago Bruce Lehrman’s name was splattered over the Internet, thanks to changes to Queensland laws. Now we have a female identity charged with more serious offences – involving a child – and we get legal ‘crickets’.

So, you are actually saying to all who read this blog, that, in your opinion, an F-16 is the equal of a modern fighter.
I would ridicule that statement mercilessly but, there is no need.

It literally shits on everything in the joke Russian Air Force (who now have no experienced pilots). Soviet made planes have ALWAYS had a kill ratio less than 1:1. F-16s have probably done more battlefield interdiction than any other plane outside of WWII.

I’ll leave it at this because you’re obviously in one of your moods: tiles do better with water than even the best treated timber which can still get water damage. The range of patterns and colours with tiles is vast, not so with timber. And tiles go much better with togas when I have one of my Greco-Roman wrestling nights. And no the first floor is not underwater but attaches to the pool and the lake.

Peace.

Tell us what “claims to justice” Hamas can possibly have. Even if you claim collateral damage most Jews in Israel/Palestine/Judea simply have done nothing wrong. Most Jews there aren’t even nationalist, are secular and don’t care about the affairs of other nations.

These Jews just want to be left alone. The usual meme is “borders matter” then it doesn’t matter for Jews? The antisemitic trope about Jews being disliked everywhere (not true) – so what, the Jews have their own country and want to be left alone – why can’t they be left alone? The Jews didn’t ask to attacked in four major wars. Gaza was Egyptian once. Aggression against the Jews in Israel is the only reason why it is not Egyptian.

Hamas leaders being taken out with HE and sniper fire is in some ways a mercy compared to what they deserve. They’ve been complicit in the rape, kidnapping, torture, bludgeoning, incineration and murder of their Jewish victims.

If I was born in Israel as a Jew, what possible claim against me does Hamas have?

You keep on saying peace, but only after hundreds of Jews were raped and tortured and thousands were murdered.

It’s as though you don’t hold the lives of Jews as sacred as anyone else.

The AEC is counting. Counting Very Very hard.

They’ve almost counted enough fake warehoused postal votes to get the “No” count below 60% (60.07% now and falling).

Count. Count. Count they go. 60%? – NO! Below!

Because the Left loves symbols, and to go under 60% would be a victory for the Left.

Not a real win, was it. Just a slim majority, wasn’t it.

F16, the most sold modern fighter by a huge margin. 25 countries have bought it.
The F16s are the best SEAD aircraft today and that potentially presents a huge problem because even now Russian aircraft are operating in standoff mode firing long range missiles. That’s very expensive. The F16s will be equipped with AMRAAMs, very superior to Russian missiles. Originally designed as an interceptor and still highly capable there, it has proven to be an exceptionally good ground attack aircraft.

The basic design was so good Japan created an enlarged version and a new model, the F21, is going into production in India; a country that traditionally bought Russian aircraft is now walking away.

British society will pay a terrible price for indulging extremism – Paywalled

We have imported hatreds and lost our common identity. Policy will have to be more muscular as a result

NICK TIMOTHY

The most despicable thing about the rolling anti-Israel protests in London is that they first began not in response to Israeli military action, but to the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7.

For three consecutive weekends now, around 100,000 people have lined the streets of London to show their opposition to Israel.

In the words of Lord Austin, who witnessed Saturday’s march, there were “lots of signs calling for Israel to be eradicated. [But I] didn’t see any calling for peace, a two-state solution, Gaza to be freed from Hamas or hostages to be released.”

For this is about hatred, not peace.

Many of those attending the protests are unembarrassed about supporting the rape and murder of Israeli civilians.

Some were content to cry “Allahu akbar!” and chant for “jihad”, a term that the police are eager to explain might sometimes mean a peaceful inner struggle. Some shouted “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”, a genocidal demand to destroy the state of Israel and cleanse the territory of its Jews.

Others were more precise.

Some called for a new intifada, like the last one which killed more than a thousand civilians in terror attacks on buses, nightclubs and restaurants.

Some chanted, “Khaybar Khaybar ya yahud jaish al Mohammed Sa’ar Yaud”, citing a famous massacre and warning Jews that “the army of Mohammed is coming”. Some protesters carried fake dead babies soaked in blood.

The desire to play things down, to convince ourselves that this is all about a quarrel in a far away country, might be understandable, but it is profoundly wrong.

The people chanting this hatred are almost certainly mostly British nationals.

They are doing so in such huge numbers that the police have opted not to enforce the law for fear of wider public disorder.

And while the hatred for now is targeted at Jews, it is also meant for the rest of us.

One man yelled, “white trash!” at those who lined up to protect the Cenotaph from protesters. One speaker promised an intifada “from London to Gaza”.

And this is just what we can see on our streets.

We now know the truth about the systematic sexual abuse of vulnerable white girls by gangs of mainly Muslim men, inculcated with a belief that these dehumanised “kuffar” were worthless.

We know about the Batley school teacher who, two and a half years on, remains in hiding with his family after he showed pupils a depiction of the Prophet Mohammed.

We know about the show trial, held in a mosque with the police participating, when a Wakefield schoolboy was accused of desecrating a Koran.

In all these cases, state organisations themselves were complicit in criminality, threats and violence.

In the past few weeks, video footage from Liverpool, Bradford, Birmingham, Blackburn, Nottingham, Greenwich, London, Leeds and Cheadle show imams saying prayers for the “mujahideen” and victory for the “heroes” of Hamas.

They called Jews “the guardians of Satan”. They have asked Allah to: “wipe out the unbelievers”; “destroy [Jews’] houses and homes”; “purify and protect al-Aqsa from the usurper Jews”; and “get rid of the unjust Jews. Count them in numbers, and kill them entirely. Don’t spare one of them.”

There are many other such examples, including praise for martyrdom as a “win-win” and a sermon, at Lewisham Islamic Centre, from the resident imam Shakeel Begg, who in 2016 failed in a libel case against the BBC, which had labelled him an extremist.

Most of the venues for these sermons are charities, and many, such as East London Mosque and Green Lane Mosque in Birmingham, receive millions of pounds in taxpayer funding, supposedly for providing community services.

Once, when terrorism struck here in the UK, we had anguished debates about these problems. More recently, however, we have become inured. Everything quickly moves on.

When Sir David Amess was killed by an Islamist, MPs chose to discuss abuse on social media rather than the ideology that might have driven his murderer.

When attacks occur, we are always told to wait until a conviction to debate the motive.

Predictably, the debate never comes.

Meanwhile Islamist radicals, and organisations often set up and supported by foreign governments, have learned to exploit the absurdities of our modern politics.

They operate the mechanics of our identity corporatism and competitive victimhood with skill.

The Crown Prosecution Service, which helped to decide not to prosecute those chanting “jihad” last week, is advised on hate crime by the chair of Finsbury Park Mosque, who has praised Hamas as “martyrs of the resistance”.

From the military to the prison service, the public sector is full of such examples.

This extremism, and the radical diversity of our society, with its ethnic tensions and imported hatreds, means the assumptions that informed traditional British policy – pragmatic, informal, light-touch – no longer hold.

The diminished commitment to shared norms and our weaker common identity means there is less social trust to sustain our freedoms in the conventional way.

The sooner we realise this, the less painful will be the changes we face.

We need a more muscular approach to end this culture of domestic separatism: in immigration, law enforcement, and public policy across the board.

The police and CPS must be made to uphold the law, but the law should be tightened to clamp down on incitement, hate speech and extremism.

There should be a register of imams and mosques, with unacceptable behaviour leading to preaching bans and closures.

TV channels that broadcast hatred must be shut. Charities that espouse extremist beliefs should be closed down.

Foreigners who spread Islamist ideology should be deported.

The burqa should be banned in public places, and the hijab banned for school children. Islamic supplementary schools should be regulated properly.

The dual jurisdiction of our national law and sharia law must end, with sharia marriages criminalised. Public funding for mosques and Islamic centres must cease.

Some will say this amounts to picking on the Islamic faith, but the problem we face emanates from the Islamic world.

Nothing will change until we tell ourselves the truth – and start to act accordingly.

Stan Grant laments the voice referendum No vote in ANU JG Crawford Oration

Journalist Stan Grant has rebutted the suggestion by Yes campaigners the Indigenous voice to parliament was a “modest” ask, declaring it was actually “monumental” as he blasted the No vote at the referendum.

In an emotive speech delivered in Canberra on Monday night as part of the ANU’s Crawford Leadership Forum, the Wiradjuri man and ex-ABC presenter said the referendum’s failure meant Australians had lost a voice through which to speak to each other.

“The voice was never a modest ask, it was monumental,” Grant said, according to a pre-released copy of his speech.
Read Next

“Perhaps this was the opportunity lost by the Yes campaign, to not let the voice truly speak. Instead it was shushed, shrunk small enough to fit into politics.

“In the consultants’ suites and the lawyers’ dens, it was determined that if the voice was made so inoffensive people may say Yes.

“Instead, it was so inoffensive people found it so easy to say No.

“The Constitution is not our problem. Our conscience is our problem.

“The Constitution does its job. It is an invisible hand and that’s how Australians like it.

“A nation is not written in a Constitution, it is written in the heart. And our Constitution was not big enough for our call from the heart.”

Supporters of the voice, including Anthony Albanese, repeatedly said the change to the Constitution was a modest request from Indigenous Australians for recognition and to be listened to.

Grant, who has been appointed Monash University’s inaugural director of the Constructive Institute Asia Pacific after he quit the ABC, also revealed during the oration that as he watched the votes being tallied on referendum night he heard “nothing that does not make me feel sore”.

He has admitted to describing Australia as “mean” during a recent trip to Europe and criticised No campaign slogan “if you don’t know, vote No”.

“Our nation is set in stone: one word, ‘No’. Whatever hope there may be for a different Australia, I likely won’t live to see it,” he said at Canberra’s Hyatt Hotel.

“This is the Australia I bequeath to my children. Like all orphans they will have their memories and however pained they may be, they can never be reconciled. My dead: black and white – my ancestors – lie restless in this land.

“We have laid the sod over them, sealed them in. I thought in me they may be able to speak, that those two sides of me might find a common voice. “But we said no to that. My country has buried my ancestors for a second time.”

Grant reflected on the “evil” of Australia’s past and questioned if history was over while also referencing German philosopher Theodor Adorno’s famous phrase “to write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric”.

Comparing the voice to “a thing of poetry” and labelling the referendum outcome “a judgment on me and all the others like me”, Grant said he felt closer to his black grandfather than his white grandmother on October 14.

“That’s what this vote has done, this is its cruelty: it has robbed me of you. Australia has decided who we are. It has reminded me of the space between us,” he said.

“The weary leaders will now return to the flinty ground of Indigenous suffering in Australia. They will chip away with what tools they have. God bless them.”
