There are few subjects where Godwin’s Law is less relevant than the current war in Ukraine.

You need to encourage your Ante-fa mates to head to Ukraine and enlist. Oh, sorry, Ukraine is where the Nazis are. Ante-fa won’t know at whom to shoot.

You could head over there also, to entertain the troops with fantasy football.

Shaterzzz, been meaning to say congratulations, Dad, to you.

Bringing up four kids in public housing and keeping them stable is no mean feat, even back when yours were young. You were a good listener, which with teens is half the battle. The other half is their friends. Now it is extremely difficult to parent in public housing, because so few others in this sort of housing are good parents and it shows in the kids. Back in my day in the 1950’s there was at least a common culture of deprivation, of sending up hoity-toity types, of looking out for your kids and community condemnation of those way out of line, as when a mother left very young kids alone or when a deadbeat dad roughed mum or the kids up. Albo’s single mum too would have had support to draw on even in the 60’s in the inner-city public housing flats she was allocated. In his inner-city Labor Party Branch President days my own Hairy was a visitor to Albo’s home there. He says it was a simple flat, but well cared for; a far cry from what you see in these areas today.

With immigration and changing patterns of work the situation has markedly altered. There is a greater tendency to rely on government largesse, less unskilled work, more drugs, more expressed mental illness, more self-neglect, a lot of learned helplessness and less neighbourliness. The housing thus quickly deteriorates, especially in the older high rises, and ‘sinks of deprivation’ emerge.

NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant has urged people to “disregard anything we said about two doses” providing protection against COVID-19.

This is one of the most damning admissions on her part – and by extension on her brethren also in the business of locking people in their homes.

She was absolutely convinced last time. How can she think she has any cache of credibility left?

And it was not the first of her proclamations to make a fool of her.

But I can make a better prediction, I think. Having observed that everything she has told us has been wrong, I would say the smartest thing to do is ignore her.

I think it is undisputed that Ukraine (the less odious of the 2 sides) contains units extremely comfortable with nazi imagery.
I do think uke Vlad is in a bind, he has the Palestinian problem. If he sues for peace or makes concessions hes likely to be terminally replaced.
Rus Vlad has a similar problem, if his war is seen as a failure (despite all his control over media) hes likely to find himself retired with extreme prejudice.

Neither has a way of losing the war and saving face/their own skins, so a lot of other people are dying instead.

Monty should give himself an uppercut given his street fighting talk of yesteryear.

And yet, here we are. Ukraine purged Azov (by its own members’ statements) of every species of extremist when it nationalised the unit in 2015, and everyone here swallowed the Russian casus belli whole.

I don’t think she did. Her excellent mind became demented in her later years.

Sleep deprivation is said in some studies to be related to an increase in dementia of the aged. Hence I try for seven or eight hours straight every night; otherwise, an arvo nap catch up.

I am annoyed that on every day this week I have things I have to do early on, meaning a 6.30am rise, so I have to get to bed earlier (which is difficult). Hairy, a night owl, just sleeps on, and on, and on.

From The Oz…

Channel 9 reporter Lana Murphy apologies for sharing controversial abortion post

Channel 9 Melbourne and one of its television reporters have both issued extraordinary apologies after the journalist posted a controversial image from a pro-choice rally on her social media account.

Crime reporter Lana Murphy shared a photo of herself on her social media account at the rally following the Roe V Wade decision in the US, and she was seen holding a sign that had been handed to her by a protester, which read: “Mary (The Virgin) should’ve had an abortion”.

The Instagram post was shared widely on social media and outraged many including those from religious communities, with some people calling for a public apology and demanding Channel 9 take action.

The station and Murphy’s contact details were shared online, encouraging people to voice their anger about the post.

Murphy was reporting from the Melbourne CBD rally on Saturday when the image of her holding the sign was taken. The journalist shared it on her account which has about 7000 followers.

But on Tuesday, Murphy’s employer issued an apology after an online backlash.

“On the weekend, a 9News journalist posted an image to her personal social media account that caused offence to some members of the community,” the statement said.

“The journalist did not mean to cause any offence, but has been counselled on why the post was not appropriate.

“9News apologises to anyone offended by the post.

“We respect all sides of this sensitive issue and pride ourselves on reporting with impartiality.”

Murphy temporarily closed down her Twitter account, but on Tuesday reactivated her account to share an apology.

“In my role as a journalist I always strive to remain impartial and respectful to either side of rational debate,” she said in a statement.

“On Saturday, while reporting on the pro-choice rally, I was photographed being passed a sign made by one of the attendees.”

She went on to concede the words on the sign and posting of the image “caused offence to some in the religious community”.

“This was not my intention, and I wholeheartedly apologise to those that were hurt,” she said.

“I acknowledge that in my professional role, it was not the appropriate time to appear to have chosen any side.””

The picture of Murphy holding the sign at the rally shows her laughing, she thought the sign was a hoot.

Murphy should be sacked.

Well, it’s a bit more complicated – sorry, Bear.

The dope that was available in the 1970s/80s was very much weaker than what is around today, on average. You were offered ‘leaf’ (3 joints to get any result, if you were lucky) or ‘leaf and heads’ (only joints with heads, thinly sprinkled, did anything) and ‘heads’ of variable quality.

There were the little grey/green compressed Thai heads sold on skewers as Budda sticks, highly prized for good reason.

There was a bit of opiated hash around – great value if you wanted to spend an afternoon or evening appreciating art and music. Black South African hash with white flecks.

An afternoon smoke of same put paid to my legal career. I attended a lecture after imbibing and realised for good that it wasn’t working. It confirmed many previous indicators. My mind doesn’t work like that. Waste of time.

The weed around today is many times stronger and cheaper than what we smoked. In those days, I would have unconditionally supported legalising marijuana.

Not sure about the stuff around these days.

Could someone please explain why we, Australians, need to take sides on a war far away with no strategic importance for us?

Johanna – We’re nearly defenseless. So we have to do as much as possible to incur favours from the people who can defend us, which is mainly the US.

Consequently the Australian government of whichever party spends a vast amount of effort to keep the US interested (they have the attentions span of a gnat). At the moment Biden is using Ukraine as a distraction squirrel, therefore we have to be seen to support his policies regarding Ukraine. If we did not, when the time comes to draw upon the favour-bank, the State Dept would tell the President that we betrayed them in such and such a circumstance, therefore the US should not help Australia with the blood of Americans.

So much of our international policy has been about this, like when Howard supported W in Iraq. Which he did elegantly to incur the favour without serious commitment in lives and money. Indeed the only two guys who died did so due to forklift accidents. Iraq, Afghanistan, East Timor, Solomon Islands, Ukraine – all the same aim, pretty much.

The problem with the favour-bank idea is that the US and the EU are untrustworthy and unreliable sugar daddies. But since we have nothing else that’s about all we can attempt.

Of course we could build a serious defense, but the Left has opposed that for forever and the Right are captured by the wets who think climate change is more dangerous than China. So it’s back to the favour-bank.

Rex, your transcript doesn’t match the quotes attributed to Putin in that shonky NY Post article that can’t manage to get even basic facts like where the speech occurred correct. It’s a pretty standard hatchet job that starts with a lie:

Russian President Vladimir Putin has compared himself to Peter the Great

No, he didn’t. It also ends with a lie in the form of weasel words:

Putin blamed Vladimir Lenin, the founder of the Soviet Union, for creating Ukraine on what Putin said was historically Russian territory.

This isn’t even controversial, and presenting it as if Putin is being dishonest is dishonest. Most of Ukraine was indeed historically Russian territory, and the Soviets quite deliberately established and built up the SSR of Ukraine in an effort to ensure the USSR would not be overly dominated by the Russian SFSR. They were concerned that Russian nationalism would be a threat to their power. It turns out they were right to be concerned, given that Russian nationalism played a major role in the eventual demise of the USSR.

If you are looking for the transcript of Putin’s speech referred to in your article, this is what you’re looking for. I don’t see anything there that deviates much from what Putin has been saying for years.

Same with me Big Nambas, in my circle of acquaintances I’d say that 2 out of every 10 are unvaxxed. In my family in WA, my wife, a daughter and youngest son are unvaxxed, another daughter is vaxxed, but she’s a school teacher so she had little choice. I’ve got other family interstate and overseas who unfortunately took the jab.

Mother Lode

July 5, 2022 5:18 pm

So why then, Oh Clever Clog, are so many folks here backing the Russians?

You think so? It might seem, in a way, a round about way, vacuously, that way. I suppose.

As I see it, Ukraine was poking at Russia, and those bioweapon labs were very significant – although labs are not actually tactically effective in delivering bioweapons. In any event the Russians turned it from posturing to killing people. That takes it from bellicose talk to actual material grievance and burning revenge.

At the same time, the people we normally expect to intervene allay tensions – the Leader of the Free World, and NATO (I suppose – when they actually turn up), instead are egging one side on from the sidelines. They have instead, to borrow an image, been writing cheques Ukraine can’t cash. They can send all the hardware they like but it is Ukrainians that are getting shot with it.

So we are stuck with the MSM in the West taking sides and tilting their reporting very much sympathetically to benefit one side. Counteracting this bias means critically disregarding much of what we are hearing the press claim the Ukrainians have achieved, and giving additional credence to what we hear from the fringes that the MSM deny. Hardly a guaranteed method relying more on weighing up reports from mainstream and fringe elements, but the alternative is to swallow inconsistent information uncritically.

So what you end up seeing here is people saying they disbelieve positive reports on the part of the Ukrainians, and believing stories from certain blogs and tweets on the part of the Russians.

There are no good people here. Except perhaps the innocents caught in the crossfire – including the Russians sent to fight and die in a stupid war to shore up the military pretensions and historical visions of the Putin and his mob.

So, a refugee from the Left can find a new home on the right where they can discuss opinions. They don’t have to be the same. They just have to respect others.

Many valid points.

Counteracting this bias means critically disregarding much of what we are hearing the press claim the Ukrainians have achieved,

The MSM has forgotten (if they ever knew) the adage that applies equally to both military operations and natural disasters.

Things are never either as good or as bad as first reported. Some humility in their reporting would not go astray.

The armed forces are undergoing changes with the army recently being asked to stop calling soldiers in the Queen’s bodyguard “Guardsman” after female soldiers complained about being referred to as men every day.

The big push of feminists has not been to remold men and women into some sort of median so they merge into a single role. It has been to move women into ‘men’ niches – make the women into men.

If they are being called ‘men’ it should be perfection for them. Whatever they are thinking of men being able to do, by classifying these women as ‘men’, they are saying that they are equal to it.

I blame hysteria.

Bloodstains, especially on white shirts, are something I have a helluva lot of experience with.

Drop it in a bucket of soda water asap (if fresh & wet)
After that, or if an old dry stain, soak, rub, etc with ammonia & dish liquid. Give it plenty of soak, & then some rub-rub-rub, then soak some more.

Squirt one of those enzyme cleaners (in trigger pack at supamarket) liberally, both sides if possible.
Wash in cold water (at all stages use cold water) with plenty of laundry detergent.

Repeat as many times as you need to.

Dear statisticats, what’s the right way to compute the benefit here?
I’m figuring the effect of “being up to date on boosters” is that the number of people who died from covid was reduced by 11%. ((1700÷2959) ?0.65)÷0.65 = -0.11

I just checked “NSW Respiratory Surveillance Report – week ending 25 June 2022” and the figures for that week are worse than the longer term average. :

There were 104 COVID-19 deaths reported this week. Of these, all were eligible for a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine but only 72 (69%) had received a third dose.

The % of deaths that were boosted was more than the % boosted in general pop.

May be better to look at CFR in boosted vs non-boosted, and there have been some publications about that somewhere, just can’t recall where, but they were from a while back so won’t include effects of newer (BA.5) strain and further waning of original jab efficacy (or increased benefit of booster).

COL CB,
You might want to look at your link again. Cases in Qld are 1.3m.

However that is way under real number. In Feb the CHO Qld said he thought 1/3 Qld had had it by then and most did not know it. That would be well over 1.3m. More recently an expert from the Burnett Institute said she thought only 40% of cases had been reported for the country. When she said it official stats were 8 million so that wouid mean more like 20 million.

Either way you can very safely say more than half population has had it. Naturally that would mean the death, ICU and hospitalisation rates are much much lower than they like to keep telling us. Also remember those cases of death and hospital numbers are with Covid and not purely Covid. Points the media never seem to be able to pick up on.

Anyone who claims that a “virus” is “intelligent” is a terminal ratbag. Your basic virus is functionally a bio-chemical weapon. It does NOT retire to the library to contemplate its next evil move. Whence the “Spanish flu” that slaughtered hundreds of millions , starting as WW1 was winding down? Did it appear out of nowhere, slaughter millions already weakened and wander of in a huff and re-engineer itself into an endless stream of lethal dub-variants? NO.

Interesting pat of the timeline is that it appeared in Europe late in WW1, just after the arrival of hundreds of thousands of Chinese labourers, imported from Southern China, to do the civil engineering “dog-work” for the Allies big push against the Germans.

That this caper STARTED with a laboratory genetic engineering exercise in “gain of function” has been known from early days. It is a BIO-WEAPON, pure and simple. Therefore, the people who “made it” know EXACTLY how it works and EXACTLY how to “tweak” it.

In the “REAL” world, virii “burn themselves out”; in one of two ways: Being SO lethal that they the unfortunate hosts do not live long enough to transmit the bug to a new victim, or become LESS lethal with each replication cycle, thus allowing the unfortunate hosts to recover and pass on the bug but in a slightly less potent strain.

As for the outright criminality of the ruthless suppression of proven “treatments” (not cures), Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine, this CLEARLY indicates that a “crisis” WAS the desired result, and a crisis with a high body-count so much more desirable.

Time to dust off the tumbrels.

On this basis, it’s absolutely guaranteed to happen. What’s going on isn’t stupidity or an accident. It’s a demolition job.

Not really my area but in a nutshell.

Glide ones are shot from a rocket and then detach in the upper atmosphere at high speeds, they rely on control surfaces to steer themselves but thereafter are unpowered.

Scramjets are propelled by themselves and retain the ability to travel at high speed for longer presumably.

Sandbox video that gives a pretty good rundown.

The sort of thing that got Wendy Bacon debarred from legal practice as not of good character.
Except worse?

No, Bacon was refused admission to practice because there was a suspicion that she had been involved in a conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, the Board of Admission didn’t believe her explanation and on appeal to the Supreme Court there was a positive finding that she was lying to them.

Well, I battled my way thru THE GODFATHER nos 2 & 3 and was formulating a detailed reponse for each but it’s simpler to go with the abridged versions ..
2 .. boring, predicable & script worse than 1 ..
3 .. absolutely “awfie”& far too long! .. set 20 years after 2 but offers no insight into the 20 years .. some characters out with no idea why nor a proper explanation who the gangster “newbies” are ..
All in all, if made today all 3 would be straight-to-video amateur offerings ….. !
