Contradicted?

It appears Gummi is correct in that they’re “eastward expansion” relates to East Germany. Where are they talking about other countries such as the Baltics being precluded to join.

NATO sans massive involvement of the US couldn’t do shit. The Brits had to recall one of their carriers from an exercise because it broke down and they recently removed one of new ships from the Red Sea because…reasons.

What’s that have to do with the price of free range eggs? The fact is that Russia attacked Ukraine in the correct belief that NATO troops wouldn’t be used. Therefore NATO was never a threat to Russia. This is something you appear to skirt over, without giving it due recognition.

No, Putin like any leader in any sober, serious country doesn’t want the global hegemon parked on its door step. That is what you find intolerable; that anyone should look the US in the face and tell it to pound sand.

That’s just being ridiculous. Numerous countries that joined NATO have direct borders with Russia. Ukraine is a threat to Putin’s governing system, it’s not a military security threat in the least.

The $20 billion isn’t “raised”. It already exists and the proposal is to steal it from the people who have it and give it to the government.
The proposal has come from ANU, so that explains it.

There seems to be quite some support for the ability to provide an uptick.
Downticks seem to be saddled with;
1) a couple of people who take a single downtick to heart, or
2) a couple of sensitive souls for whom an unjustified obvious avalanche of one-off downticks is a crushing blow, and
3) a couple of triggered snowflakes whose ego cannot cope with a long-term aggregate high number of downticks.

Normal people get on with life.

Says the pos talking about a ham sandwiches, informing the blog he’s labor royalty, spamming the site with pubbling when he doesn’t, and has never owned a pub, getting involved in other people’s stoushes. Giving “expert” advice to the current blog owner on running a blog when his own accumulated 279 comments in 15 years, telling the blog he fired a person because he burned the toast, continual outback spamming.

Yeah, people get a life and what a life it is too.

“WTF, just read about the doxxing of Jewish people by Clem Ford and others. Outrageous to say the least.”

It continues. Just like a frenzied, frothing, and hate filled mob of mainly Muslims and some leftists on Monday night 9 October 2023, on the steps of the Sydney Opera House, danced around a burning Israeli flag, set of flares and screamed and screeched “kill the Jews”, “gas the Jews” (I still maintain those words were said) and perhaps the most sinister…….”where’s the Jews”. I remember that Monday night, I witnessed the ugliness at Town Hall (where it started), and then was told by NSW Police that Sydney’s CBD was ‘Judenfrei”. As the Mocker writes in his superb piece in today’s Oz, “perhaps the mob was they screaming “where’s the Jews” to buy them gelato”?

I think not.

Just like the Muslim and leftist protest in the Jewish suburb of Caulfield, on the Sabbath, in front of a synagogue, a protest deliberately designed to threaten and intimidate Caulfield’s Jews. Or perhaps those Muslims and leftists went to Caulfield to wish the Jews a Shabbat Shalom?

I think not.

Just like the mainly Muslim and leftist convoy, on a Saturday evening, drove (with a NSWaffen police escort) all the way from Sydney’s western suburbs to Sydney’s eastern suburbs, where it just so happens more than a few Jews live, again designed to threaten and intimidate Sydney’s Jews. Or perhaps this convey was travelling to Sydney’s eastern suburbs to wish the Jews a “shavua tov”.

I think not.

I could go on, don’t forget those ugly scenes in Melbourne when grieving Israeli families at a Melbourne hotel and were subjected to a mob of screaming and screeching Muslim and leftist activists who invaded the hotel. Or perhaps the mob was there to wish the Israelis a happy holiday?

I think not.

Despite the explosion of Jew hatred in this country and across the West, I’m one tough Jew, and this Jew is not for turning. But I will and I do weep for this country, because it isn’t the country I grew up in. I remember the days when synagogues, Jewish schools and Jewish communal organisations, hospitals and aged care homes did not require massive security like they do now. Yes, there was anti-Semitism in Australian in the 1970s, 1960s and earlier but it wasn’t like the unhinged genocidal Jew hatred we are witnessing now. So, what has caused the change? Well, I’ll leave that question for you all to ponder.

Deadly attacks on Jews always follows the same inevitable deadly path, first verbal and physical insults, unhinged rhetoric, intimidation, stalking, doxxing and the last? Jews are murdered.

Just further to Chlamydia Ford, Jack the Insider has given her a thorough smacking down in a piece put up on the Oz website this afternoon. Worth reading.

Leak, doxxing of almost 600 Jewish creatives ‘very distressing… with really serious consequences’

By alexi demetriadi
NSW Political Reporter

Federal Labor MP Josh Burns has called the doxing of hundreds of Jewish creatives in a private WhatsApp group “very distressing”, warning it could result in “really serious consequences”.

On Thursday, high-profile pro-Palestine activists, including feminist author Clementine Ford, began sharing on social media a link to a spreadsheet that had leaked the names, occupations and social media profiles of almost 600 Jewish creatives purportedly from the WhatsApp group.

A second, new link to the document has since been removed by the administrators of the web page where it had been posted, citing a breach of privacy and harassment. It had included a spreadsheet with links to social media accounts and a separate file with a photo gallery of more than 100 Jewish people.

On Friday, Mr Burns slammed the move. “It’s very distressing, and it’s a trend where we’ve seen people using large social media platforms to try and target Jewish people in Australia,” the Macnamara MP said.

Mr Burns is Jewish and the inner-Melbourne seat of Macnamara has one of the highest Jewish populations in Australia.

He warned against targeting and vilifying Jewish people, making a distinction that it wasn’t permissible criticism, or targeting, of the Israeli government.

“You are targeting your fellow Australians, and all Australians should be able to live their lives respectfully and free from intimidation and free from the … really ugly vilification that was seen against Jewish community members,” the MP said.

“This has resulted in really serious consequences … where people have received death threats.”

The MP said he had been in touch with a family whose details were released and had gone into hiding. He said that the move had “shaken them (the people doxed) to their very core”.

“They’re receiving an avalanche of threats, and they basically had to switch off their devices and not go into their places of work, and go into a place that wasn’t their usual home,” he said.

“They were completely shattered by this whole experience.”

Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-chief executive Alex Ryvchin said he was “in shock… disbelief” that “people are once again drawing up lists of Jews”.

“It has been said to me by numerous community members that they feel relief that their parents or grandparents who survived the Holocaust are not alive to see this,” he said.

Mr Ryvchin called the move and tactics “Nazi-like”.

“Our community members who were motivated to speak up by the October 7 attacks and historic levels of local anti-Semitism should be proud and we stand with them in unity and solidarity,” he said.

“We call on our fellow Australians to resist the harassment and bullying, and when asked to sack or blacklist Australian Jews, to say not in our time and not in our country.”

Victorian Police said it was investigating the incident.

I see you are just doubling down. Did you read down to

So, both Kohl and Gorby are lying then? Direct quotes from these two and they’re lying?

You said that NATO could easily deal with Russia. I countered with, Not without a massive commitment from the US. Sans the US none of those countries could manage an offensive against Russia because they can barely even undertake a policing action. Re this thing I’m skirting over, no. NATO troops would not be used directly because Russia intervened before Ukraine was a member of NATO but I think they understood that NATO resources; whether they understood how NATO resources would be involved I don’t know.

The point, which I’ve explained twice, is that if there ever was a time for direct NATO intervention it would be now. But Russian nuclear deterrence has obviously prevented that and therefore the notion of Russian security that Putin is talking about is bullshit.

None of those countries is the size of Ukraine, has the material resources of Ukraine, or sits geographically in a position that poses a strategic threat to Russia.

Good, so now we’re getting somewhere by admitting Putin wanted Ukraine for Russian strategic purposes. The history lesson is nonsense then. And yet, with all those strategic resources in the Ukraine, NATO boots are not on the ground.

That you ignore this by imagining its simply about Putin, and that no other Russian leader thinks that Ukraine in NATO is a strategic threat to Russia is beyond ridiculous.

I’m not ignoring anything. Putin is currently the president and that’s who we’re talking about.

They can legitimately depict him as gay. And openly so. Not a big shock – Alexander was a fan of Athens and Athenian society viewed homosexuality as a higher form of attachment: lots of youths canoodling in the shadow of pending battle, and lots of corpulent men lolling about at banquets fondling their calamities so they can’t even pour their wine straight – for this last part just read Plato. (Plato would laugh at what we now call ‘platonic’ love.)

Alexander was devoted to his boyhood friend, Hephaestion. They were together throughout the tumultuous years in the ME -all captured in the fabulous sarcophagus in the museum in Istanbul, where they are depicted both hunting & in warfare together against the Persians. He was said to be distraught when Hephaestion died of some sort of infectious disease in their last years in Persia. Thinking Hephaestion may have been poisoned by a local, he is said to have had the entire local community killed. I doubt if he ever got over the loss of him & he himself died not that long after.

Whether it was a homosexual relationship – who knows, who cares? In the Getty museum in Los Angeles (the one modelled on a Roman villa) there are two busts of Alexander and Hephaestion displayed together. I am a romantic – when I see this, & the magnificent carving of them both on the sarcophagus (said to have been made for Alexander) I think to myself – there they are, together forever.

How Australian Crawl went from endless summer to endless conflict

By Barry Divola
February 7, 2024

Listen to this article
6 min

For an almost mythical snapshot of early ’80s Australian beach culture and the promise of an endless youthful summer, rewatch the music video for Australian Crawl’s 1981 hit Errol.

The band members, all tanned and lithe and grinning from ear to ear, run along the beach on the Gold Coast, catch glassy waves, water-ski, plummet down water slides and frolic in a jacuzzi, guzzling champagne with beautiful women. They look like a gang of mates having the time of their lives.

And that’s pretty much what they were. They met as schoolboys at Peninsula Grammar in Victoria, all keen sportsmen who were on the swim team. They formed a band almost as a lark, but rose to fame quickly through relentless gigging and enduring songs such as The Boys Light Up, Beautiful People and Downhearted from their 1980 debut album.

By the time Errol was released as the first single of follow-up album Sirocco – which became the second best-selling album in Australia in 1981, behind John Lennon’s Double Fantasy and ahead of AC/DC’s Back In Black – they were among the biggest bands in the country.

But that dream run was about to end. Within four years, singer-songwriter-guitarist Guy McDonough, who had battled alcohol and heroin addiction, was dead at the age of 28 from a viral infection; one by one, band members were sacked or left as the band changed direction and tried to make it in the US; and the whole thing ended with a 1985 album that was a creative and commercial flop – yet they had to undertake a tour to pay off the $400,000 debt they’d accrued recording it.

A decade later, when they were inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame in 1996, guitarist/keyboardist Brad Robinson was unable to attend because he was nearing the end of a three-year battle with lymphoma. He died two weeks later aged 38.

Drummer Bill McDonough, Guy’s older brother, wasn’t at the induction either – because he wasn’t invited. He writes about it in his memoir Sons of Beaches, published in November. The snub obviously still stings today.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he says. “To not invite me and not have me there to represent Guy and myself, with all we did with regard to the band … well, it was just terrible.”

So, what happened to those guys in the Errol video, who looked like they were on top of the world?

“We were all really close,” says former lead singer James Reyne, whose tour celebrating the 40th anniversary of the band’s compilation album Crawl File reaches Sydney this week. “And I know it’s a cliche, but in a band you’re like brothers, so you have your fights, and you have your moments, and you get over them. But then things change. So, yes, there was a point when Bill was asked to leave the band. It was a band decision and a majority vote.”

“I’m aware he’s written a book, but I haven’t read it, so I don’t know if he dwells on that. And I’m not going to diss Bill. I mean, obviously if you’re asked to leave a band, you’re not going to be happy about it. I understand that. But it was so long ago. The band finished in 1986. I’m 66 years old, and I’ve had a 38-year solo career since then.”

McDonough’s book is largely about his relationship with his brother Guy. But of course, Australian Crawl formed a big part of that relationship. And it’s obvious from talking to McDonough that he wishes things had panned out differently.

“I’ve been extremely careful in the book to be respectful to people in the band,” he says. “I haven’t gone for the backstabbing reveal or tried to settle old scores. But if you read between the lines, you can gather that as fame and fortune came upon us, the egos of certain members of the band got out of control and we lost that brotherhood. That’s when things got ugly and fell apart.”

There are now two Australian Crawl camps, who deal with each other only through their managers when it comes to business decisions. The final sad part of the story is lead guitarist Simon Binks, who suffered a brain injury following a car crash in 1995 after drinking. He went on to almost scupper a million-dollar deal the band was making with Universal Music by doing an ill-advised interview with A Current Affair in 2014, where he lamented his lack of songwriting credits, vilifying Reyne in the process.

Credit:

Reyne and McDonough own homes only a few kilometres from each other on Mornington Peninsula, but haven’t spoken since Robinson’s funeral in 1996. The irony is that both men, when asked for their memories of the band, have similar stories to tell about how much they loved being in Australian Crawl.

“There were long periods of complete togetherness,” says Reyne. “We were a big party band and we’d go out and have a great time together. We’d crack up at all our in-jokes and I just remember a lot of laughter.”

“I still have dreams about being in Australian Crawl,” says McDonough.

“Some are sad, but most of them are happy, and they’re the ones I prefer to remember, the ones where we’re all Peninsula Grammar mates who somehow became rock stars.”

For so many people growing up in the ’80s, Australian Crawl songs were the soundtrack of the era. How do Reyne and McDonough feel when they hear those songs now?

“If one of the old songs comes on in the supermarket I have to leave,” says Reyne. “And the reason I can’t listen to that stuff any more is because of the singer. It’s because of my voice. I didn’t know what I was doing. It’s barely controlled yelling. I’m a much better singer now.”

McDonough was in a plumbing store recently picking up a new loo seat for his home renovations

“I’m standing there after talking to the guy behind the counter, and I’m wearing a torn T-shirt and have paint all over me, and when he comes back with the toilet seat, Downhearted comes on the sound system. And he starts singing along to it. And I thought to myself, ‘Do I say something? Do I say, I used to be in Australian Crawl and I co-wrote that song’?”

He chose to keep quiet. Instead, he just paid and walked out of the store, with a new toilet seat under his arm and a smile he couldn’t wipe off his face.

The Special Counsel has concluded that Biden did not have intent? Just like the FBI concluded Clinton did have intent when she maintained an illegal server?

Is proving intent a necessary element to the potential criminal charge/s? I was under the impression that in Clinton’s case, proving intent was NOT necessary?

The conclusion that no jury would find Biden guilty due to his PRESENT (perceived) cognitive capacity seems strange. I would have thought that his cognitive capacity at the time of the alleged crime/s – when he was VP – would be the relevant period to examine?

‘Completely unacceptable’: Anthony Albanese reveals horror at reports about Jewish residents fleeing Melbourne’s north due to anti-Semitism (Sky, 9 Feb)

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has reacted to reports that members of the Jewish community are fleeing Melbourne’s northern suburbs due to “anti-Semitic attacks” on local families and businesses.

We should ask Tony Burqa about Jewish Australians being forced to flee from muslim electorates. I’m sure he’d have something to say. And Bad Penny might be so favoured as to divert some of that dosh she promised Hamas, since displaced Jewish Australians are a whole lot closer to home than Gazan terrorists are.

Imagine a politician lying. Inconceivable.

What is their motivation to lie and why? Instead, your link offers an account with no specific quotes from people to support what you’re suggesting. If this is your only argument then, there’s nothing else to be said.

Ukraine isn’t a member of NATO. Short of involving itself directly NATO is doing everything from providing Ukraine with weapons and IRS.

That’s not the point, though is it? You’re deliberately skirting over the fundamental point.

No, I didn’t say Putin wanted Ukraine for strategic purposes, I said Putin and every other Russian leader wants NATO out of Ukraine for strategic purposes.

Obviously, not because of a border issue, seeing several former Soviet blocs are now part of NATO. It was exactly like you suggested. Ukraine is seen as too strategically important because of what’s in the ground etc. Greed and self-aggrandizement better explains it.

On the latter point, NATO has expended hundreds of billions, emptied its arsenal, and is in the process of deindustrializing, but sure, this has meant nothing to NATO.

Assume, 10% “industrialization” in NATO. It’s low, but lets go with a low ball figure because it would offer more comfort to you. NATO is 45% of the world economy. It still dwarfs Russia by the size of Siberia.

Israel is showing the world it doesn’t curl up in a ball.

Many have also gone to fight in the IDF, including Australians which has also made certain people very angry, demanding that anyone that does so get prosecuted.
I personally couldn’t cope with the abuse dished out to the Jewish people I follow on twitter, death threats, rape threats, pernicious trolling, revelling in the suffering of hostages and their families, it never stops but they soldier on, defending themselves in word and deed.

I also expect a downticker who has suddenly realised that he has been using wine bottles wrong all these years, and a bottle of champagne does not have to bring your eyes to tears or entail a trip to St Vincents late at night with improbably stories about it falling off the top shelf and somehow…well, you get the gist.

Yes JC the shiny plaques on the footpaths around the Jewish quarter and Trastevere in Rome are poignant, as are the wall plaques on schools in the 4th and 8th arrondissements in Paris numbering the Jewish children sent to their deaths, far more in number than the fallen resistance members individually memorialised.
What always astounded me was how long it took for even the plaques to go up took.
Iirc the Paris ones were placed in 2005.
And there are still thousands of artworks stolen from Jewish families that are still sitting in French and other galleries, only now having their provenances checked while others are still subject to ongoing legal action.

Looks like the hive has decided the excuse for Premier Minns laughing at a question about the stabbing of a 70 year old lady was…. “context”..
https://www.theguardian.com/media/commentisfree/2024/feb/09/no-laughing-matter-the-context-missing-from-sky-newss-report-on-steven-miles-and-youth

The new Labor leader, who succeeded Annastacia Palaszczuk in December, answered “it was a speech about housing” and “I figured I’d get a question”, which prompted laughter from the room. The premier had, after all, just answered several questions about crime – and none about housing from the media.
When Walters asked again about the “absence of any reference to youth crime in your speech” Miles smiled wryly and then giggled, seemingly amused at the tone and the persistence of the questioner.

This exchange with Walters, who has a habit of asking long-winded questions, was fashioned into a story about how the premier laughed when he was asked questions about crime.

Sky News also ran part of the earlier exchange but not the laughter of the audience.

Cue the negative stories which rolled out across News Corp, the Daily Mail and social media.

Peculiarly its very difficult to find any trace of the thing on youtube.

Yesterday I decided the most interesting thing I could do was explore the Italian health sector after a week of discomfort and with my asthma being under control wondering what the problem could be.
Pleasantly surprised, especially after multiple experiences with a family member of the Melbourne hospital emergency system in September and October, with so many people and so many hours of waiting, waiting, waiting.
Could only be described as quiet, quick, efficient and most importantly, resolved.
There was quite a period of time when I was the only patient in emergency.
That doesn’t happen in Colac.

We learned the answer to that when after threatening all & sundry with a bet he believed they’d be unable to match, he got offered a bet that would take some real skin off him – turned out he didn’t have the balls to match his mouth.

Thus: Man or mouse.

Personally I like the ticks.

For example Tom in the early morning can see people appreciate his effort in putting up the toons.

When Cassie has a good rant she knows people are supporting her. Or when Rosie is doing her travel reporting and even Lizzie when she travels.

Or such as when Digger had his rant about Lambie. TE when he posts something historical.

Or when you can see when somebody has made an effort to comment on a subject or made a witty reply.

I think it helps people know they reached somebody and that is important. If I make a comment at the Australian and it gets over 100 likes I do appreciate it.

I think those concerned about downticks are a very small group. For some it became an obsession that probably motivated their downtickers even more. There was an obvious downticking campaign this morning which was clearly designed to upset some of the lady commentators. It might also have been intended to cause the response that ticking removed.

Something will be lost if people can’t see any response. It was also a useful sign of support if there was a stoush going on. Naturally some did not like that.

The Icelanders must be getting sick of these small volcanoes popping off every month or so. This one started less than 24 hours ago and is already slowing to a halt. Not before causing all sorts of chaos though – fortunately not too serious, since it has missed most of the important places like the power plant, Grindavik town and the Blue Lagoon.

Not so sure that’s right, BoN (waaaay upthread).

One of my three predictions for 2024 at Briggs’ site was that Iceland would be close to destroyed, and I see no reason to change that.

I am not a seismologist, and couldn’t discern a caldera from a fedora, but the fissures over the past few years have been moving, as I see it, steadily west.

Grindavik is saved! Despite the fact that it has almost been chopped in two and accounts for only about 3% of Iceland’s population, doesn’t seem to me to be any reason for good cheer. Nor that fact the the Blue Lagoon tourist attraction is (barely) likely to reopen.

This last event chopped off the hot water and power to the airport, which of course they will repair in a few days, but not having your international airport open is quite serious.

As the two plates decide to put a bit of space into their relationship, it all seems to be moving westward towards Reykavik.

‘Not like a detective novel’: Court urged to reject Roberts-Smith appeal
Michaela Whitbourn
By Michaela Whitbourn
February 9, 2024 — 6.10pm

Listen to this article
4 min

Ben Roberts-Smith’s defamation case was “not like a detective novel” where there could be multiple explanations for killings in Afghanistan, and a decision finding he engaged in war crimes should not be overturned, the barrister acting for the media outlets at the centre of the lawsuit has said.

Nicholas Owens, SC, acting for The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, urged the Full Court of the Federal Court on Friday to reject the former soldier’s appeal against Justice Anthony Besanko’s historic decision last year dismissing his multimillion-dollar defamation suit against the newspapers.

Besanko found the newspapers had proven to the civil standard – on the balance of probabilities – that Roberts-Smith was complicit in the murder of four unarmed prisoners while on deployment in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2012. This is lower than the criminal standard of beyond reasonable doubt.

Owens told the court that Roberts-Smith’s barrister, Bret Walker, SC, had raised hypothetical scenarios during the appeal, including that Australian soldiers might be motivated to plant a Taliban-issued object on the body of an Afghan man killed legitimately in war to help avoid unnecessary questions about whether the killing was in fact lawful.

Walker stressed that his client, a Victoria Cross recipient, did not give evidence that this had ever occurred.

Owens said that the hypothesis “must be excluded because if it was to be raised … one would have expected that to be given” in evidence by the former Special Air Service corporal or another soldier in court.

In his judgment in June, Besanko found that either Roberts-Smith or his friend, a soldier dubbed Person 11, planted a Taliban-issued radio on an unarmed Afghan prisoner known as Ali Jan in 2012 to make his unlawful killing by Person 11 on Roberts-Smith’s instruction appear legitimate. Under the rules of engagement that bound the SAS, killing unarmed prisoners is a war crime.

“It’s to be remembered, of course, that these murders are not like a detective novel where people stumble across a body in the library bleeding from the head and there’s a whole range of questions about how did they die, who killed them, for what reason, et cetera,” Owens said.

He said that in general “we know who killed” the four Afghan men in question and “we know how they were killed”, by gunshot.

“The only dispute is in effect the immediate circumstances,” Owens said, which pointed to whether the killings involved the lawful engagement of enemy combatants or unlawful killings of unarmed prisoners.

He said there was “no third hypothesis that’s available on the evidence, or … if it’s available, it must be of a probability that is so low that it cannot possibly affect the outcome of the case when the standard of proof is balance of probabilities”.

Owens submitted on Friday that “the fundamental flaw in the arguments advanced by the appellant in this court lies in a failure to make … any serious attempt to place particular pieces of evidence that they have seized upon in the context of the evidence as a whole”.

He said the court had heard detailed submissions from Roberts-Smith’s barristers, pointing to alleged problems in the evidence against their client.

“Our response to those submissions … ranges from, at the one end, denying that there is a problem with the evidence … to, at the other end, accepting completely that there is a valid point to be made,” Owens said.

But he said that “the real question … is when all of the evidence, with all of those imperfections, with all of those contradictions, is considered as a whole, does it combine to produce the requisite state of comfortable satisfaction that our case is more likely than not?”

Roberts-Smith’s legal team say the evidence against their client is insufficiently cogent to justify the grave findings made by Besanko, and his decision should be overturned.

The war veteran has consistently denied wrongdoing, and wants the court to set aside Besanko’s decision and enter judgment in his favour. He also wants it to award damages or to send the matter to a different Federal Court judge to determine damages.

Parts of the appeal are being held in closed court to hear submissions relating to national security information. The hearing continues on Monday.
