But, I find his plays absurd

Seriously. Every will I have overseen has been based on King Lear and every decision I make I filter through Hamlet. Some of his historical plays I can take or leave but all my dealings with women are based on The Taming of the Shrew.

Shakespeare is the greatest literary figure ever; closely followed by our Jane. ‘Seventeenth Doll’ is low grade.

If i was a HS teacher looking to interest kids in willy Shakespeare Id start with this little filmclip (with a brief background) and ask if any ‘aspiring rappers” could top it as a masterpiece of putdowns.

Then set a task for groups of 4/5 people to write as similar a backhanded praise/ burn and then pick one to give it as a speech.

And I see that as of now 27 people have thumbed down one of the greatest monologues in history. But I shall not blame them, no I shall not. Each and every one of them are surely honorable men, all of them.

Biden Has Ensured the Fall of the USA

From Armstrong Economics –

“The goal of energy independence was achieved under Trump. Now, under Biden, he had depleted the oil reserves all to save the Democrats from their own policies of ending fossil fuels. Worse still, the Biden Administration has now opened the door to the decline and fall of the United States for another oil embargo would be devastating to the US economy and the people are totally unaware of how vulnerable their livelihood now stands thanks to the Democrats.

I’m sure the Democrats will be writing in as always. All I can say is PLEASE look at this objectively and do not vote simply because of party politics. Depleting the strategic oil reserves to just try to bullshit everyone for the midterm election and then afterward, screw you and your family, shows that they are counting on your stupidity and your bias.

I have studied military tactics. All they need do is cut off all oil again, the US will crumble, and your very job will be at risk if companies can no longer function. This is all total bullshit. It should be a crime for any president to take the strategic reserves for personal political gain. This is no different than robbing money from the Treasury.

I have warned, Beware of oil prices in 2023. Biden has completely undermined the security of the United States into 2032. The Arabs know see the crisis that they face. They would be insane to do anything that benefits the Biden Administration or the EU. Forcing prices to skyrocket will be the only thing to force political change from this climate insanity.

Electric cars are not practical. They may be ok as a second car for around town. But I would look at hybrids for we do not have the power grid to support electric cars. In addition, the first think you do in war is take down the power grid. With electric cars and digital currency, you complete shut down an opponent. Brain dead – just brain dead.”

Eyrie – the first ever SF novel I read was Foundation, which I found in the school library in year 7. I only read it because of the cover, which looked interesting. Started me on a fifty year journey.

Actually once had an English teacher who liked SF, for one year only in yr 10, he lent me one which I think was called Wildfire. It was excellent. And he set us to write a SF story. I got 40/40 for mine, still have it somewhere. It was about a robotic spy from Jupiter, which since on Jupiter they didn’t have heavier metals was made of sodium and potassium with a silicon skeleton. At the end of it he got into a bar fight and exploded when someone broke a beer bottle over his head in a pub. I was always going to be a chemist… 😀

You’re so pretentious, Driller. But then it’s very much in keeping with who you are. You aspire to be recognized as a great “historician”, but what we see is very little thought process and mostly regurgitating from recollection. 543 Dutch planes held off the Nazi invasion. I’m just guessing on the number you recited once ( obviously extracted it from Wiki without citation) to give you a certain presence. You’ve dissed Catholicism as having retarded economic development, ignoring the Italian republics were at the top in the middle centuries in terms of living standards or that Catholic Spain and France were the European superpowers of their time. Now, you’re plugging Shakespeare to primary school kids. FMD, you’re a blowhard. Just the worst.

Back from some probate-induced World-Championship lurking..

Agree with Johanna and Eyrie.
Shakespeare is the Bach of literature, morsels of clever wit and prose, in an ocean of almost unintelligible Ye-Olde-English boredom.

Bach was the same.. greatest composer ever etc.. etc.., but it’s moments of melodic brilliance in a uniformly boring, flat ocean of Baroque Muzak.
I challenge anyone to recall and correctly place more than 2 or 3 of the 96 Well-Tempered Preludes and Fugues, a mere speck in this alleged Master’s OCD-like obsession with counterpoint.

Liszt, an amazingly astute proselytiser of mostly unknown works of musical genius, picked one (!) sinfonia in one (!) out of 250+ Cantatas by this criminally boring composer for two of his brilliant transcriptions.
Says it all, really.

Oh, and Johnny R.. love your work!!

Bit of a boring political week. Ukraine going quiet on the Kherson front. Nothing new in the US. Albo and Dan just getting on with things in competent fashion.

Truss should be a signature example to you lot of what happens when your most fervent wish – that a leader comes to power who is an ideological warrior, a rock-ribbed conservative from the old school – actually happens in real life. She has been shunned by all and sundry as a complete failure mere weeks after getting the job, mainly because her authentically Tory policies are utter tosh. Dunno it’s true as initial reports are hard to believe. A Russian general went public saying the Ukrainians are suspected of using illegal weapons and in order to protect the Kherson public Russian forces may have to retreat.

If this is true, then it means they’re softening the Russian punter towards accepting a withdrawal for “humanitarian” reasons. In other words they have to hightail outta there because they’re getting the shit beaten out of them.

Jury in Bruce Lehrmann trial to resume deliberations over Brittany Higgins’ rape allegations on Friday

17 minutes ago October 20, 2022

The jury deciding the guilt of Bruce Lehrmann for the alleged rape of Brittany Higgins will deliberate for a third day.

The eight women and four men did not deliver a verdict on Thursday and will continue their deliberations from 10am on Friday at the ACT Supreme Court.

Reporters waited outside courtroom three on Thursday before the court briefly reconvened at 4pm, when ACT Chief Justice Lucy McCallum adjourned jurors for the day.

“Have a restful evening and please go straight to the jury’s room in the morning,” she said.

Mr Lehrmann and his defence counsel attended the hearing, along with the prosecution, while Ms Higgins was absent.

The court has warned that the jury will reconvene at short notice when either a verdict is reached or the jurors have a question.

There is no way of predicting how long the jury will take in reaching a verdict or deciding they are unable to reach a unanimous decision, which would result in a mistrial.

Ms Higgins has alleged Mr Lehrmann raped her on the couch in the office of their then boss, the then defence industry minister Linda Reynolds, in the early hours of March 23, 2019, after a night out drinking with colleagues.

Liszt, an amazingly astute proselytiser of mostly unknown works of musical genius, picked one (!)

There was some sort of mass Lizt hysteria in Austria (?) during his time. I suspect it was some sort of forerunner to sheilas going berserk over the Beatles.

Lisztomania or Liszt fever was the intense fan frenzy directed toward Hungarian composer Franz Liszt during his performances. This frenzy first occurred in Berlin in 1841 and the term was later coined by Heinrich Heine in a feuilleton he wrote on April 25, 1844, discussing the 1844 Parisian concert season. Lisztomania was characterized by intense levels of hysteria demonstrated by fans, akin to the treatment of celebrity musicians today – but in a time not known for such musical excitement.

Weather bureau backflips on rebranding: we can still call it the ‘BoM’

The Bureau of Meteorology has backed down on its planned rebranding, saying people can still refer to the weather agency as “the BoM” – or anything else they like.

The backflip follows the BoM’s announcement on Tuesday that it wanted media agencies to refer to it as “the Bureau” or its full name rather than “BoM”.

The former government came up with the idea for rebranding the organisation at a cost of $220,296, which included fees for consulting a private public relations agency.

Plibersek said the BoM should not be spending time on branding when eastern Australia was flooded.

A BoM spokesperson said the rebranding was prompted by feedback from the community that showed confusion over its name reduced the effectiveness of its communications of weather forecasting and warnings.

But following the subsequent public outcry and ridicule over the mooted move, the organisation said it would now stick with the BoM moniker.

“The community is welcome to refer to the Bureau in any way they wish, including referring to us as the BoM,” the spokesperson said.

Federal environment minister Tanya Plibersek issued a rebuke in response, saying it was “ridiculous for the BoM to be talking about rebranding”, particularly at a time when towns were flooding.

The Fuck Biden Trade is On

I took on an emotional trade today and they sometimes work out for me. On the whole I chopped myself to pieces, losing 1%. I ended heavily short, but long oil via ERX based upon this fucking moronic comments.

BIDEN CALLS ON OIL COMPANIES TO HALT BUYBACKS DURING WAR
BIDEN CLAIMS US WILL BUY BACK OIL TO FILL UP SPR BELOW $72
BIDEN TO RELEASE ANOTHER 15 MILLION BARRELS FROM SPR

Basically he’s a giant piece of shit. Oil isn’t even expensive and he’s all but demanding that producers step up “during war” to drill more, at the same time he works tirelessly to destroy the industry and promises to RIG prices lower via depleting American reserves. The fucking balls on this senile demonic cocksucker is unreal. This isn’t coming from a partisan point of view, so don’t think I’m ready to support a GOP cocksucker either. I hated it when Trump intervened in markets with his stupid tweets and I hate this shit too.

Net net, forex markets reasserted danger today, and bonds got hammered. We are seeing 30yr fixed mortgages at 7.22%, auto loans 8% APR and we have +150bps of Fed hikes on deck.

If you’re bullish here, you should be in jail. Markets are down drastically, I get it. The Chinese Dragon index was down 7% today — because we hate China. It’s all coming to a head and I also see that overwhelming bearishness might be reason to hope and pray for a dick-sucking rally.

Fight the Fed, why don’t you? Let’s see where it gets you and let’s see how fortunate Jim Biden is with his demands to Texas to drill more so that he might get more of his left wing lunatics voted into office this November.

I CANNOT HATE THIS MARKET MORE. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE.

Israel Dares to Tell Ukraine No and Under the Bus They Go

The war in Ukraine rages on as Russia has redoubled its efforts with new troop mobilizations and an escalation in the air war. Fighting has largely centered in the eastern area of the country, but over the last few days, strikes on Kyiv have begun again. That has led Ukrainian President Volydymr Zelensky to ask Israel to donate parts of its ‘Iron Dome’ missile defense system to his war effort.

The idea isn’t new, with requests for the system actually beginning at the beginning of the war. Some in the United States, including Rep. Adam Kinzinger, chastized Israel at the time for not obliging.

The latest news is that Israel has again turned Ukraine down, leading to renewed outcry and claims that the Jewish nation is beholden to Russia.

The details of the decision by Israel likely rest on a combination of practical and political factors. For starters, Ukraine has essentially never sided with Israel at the United Nations over the years, often voting for resolutions condemning the Jewish state. For context, as of June of this year, the number of resolutions against Israel stood at 122. Ukraine voted against Israel in 95 of them and abstained in the rest.

Ukraine has also been downright hostile since the war started, making rash demands of Israel and attacking them publicly for not falling in line with aid. In short, I can imagine the Israelis are now not too keen on giving valuable defensive weapons away to a nation that has not only never lifted a finger to help them but has actively worked against their security situation.

The second part of this is the fact that the Iron Dome is not designed to take down high-tech Russian weaponry over a massive land area. It’s designed to protect cities from mostly low-grade rockets. There’s also the concern of Iron Dome technology falling into the hands of Russia and thereby making its way to Iran and Hamas. Lastly, Israel only has a finite supply of Iron Dome munitions. They simply can’t afford to empty their stockpiles for what is likely a futile gesture.

The bottom line is that Israel is perfectly justified in putting its foot down here. Ukraine’s past hostility leaves it in no place to make demands. And frankly, even though I’m strongly anti-Russian aggression, the sense of entitlement from the Ukrainians is starting to wear thin. No one owes them anything, and their requests for aid should be done with humility and an acceptance of how their own past behavior may affect things. Never mind the issues of anti-Semitism that exist in Ukraine.

As to clowns like Kinzinger pretending every nation on earth must be subservient to the Ukrainian cause, they can go jump in a lake. Israel has a delicate balance to strike in all this, and it should not be expected to put its people in serious danger in order to throw a few bones at Ukraine.

A sales rep, an administration clerk, and the manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp. They rub it and a Genie comes out. The Genie says “I’ll give each of you just one wish” “Me first! Me first!” says the administration clerk. “I want to be in the Bahamas, driving a speedboat, without a care in the world”. Poof! She’s gone. “Me next! Me next!” says the sales rep. “I want to be in Hawaii, relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life”. Poof! Taking breathtaking hypocrisy to the next level:

‘What do we do to keep the lights on?’, asks Andrews (Sky News mainpage headline, 20 Oct)

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has insisted his government has a plan to “keep the lights on” once coal fired power stations in the state are shut down.

Mr Andrews told reporters on Thursday Labor will bring the State Electricity Commission back into majority government ownership if the party is re-elected at next month’s election.

The SEC under the new structure will help drive an initial $1 billion investment in renewable energy projects to deliver 4.5 gigawatts of power generation.

I suppose it’s an improvement that he realizes that he has to “keep the lights on”. At least. But sheesh this guy is thick. Quadrupling down on the same stuff that caused the problem isn’t going to solve it.

Breaking the electricity system then promising to fix it if re-elected is really cute, even for Labor.

Thorpe ‘should not be in parliament’: Hanson
Owen Leonard
OWEN LEONARD

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson will move a motion of no confidence against Lidia Thorpe, arguing that merely stepping down from her role as Greens deputy leader in the Senate is “not good enough”.

Ms Hanson said Ms Thorpe’s failure to disclose her relationship with former bikie boss Dean Martin, particularly while she was on a parliamentary committee investigating bikie operations, meant she was no longer fit to retain her role in parliament.

“It has to come down to what she’s done. She didn’t disclose that she was actually in a relationship with the former president of an outlaw bikie gang,” Ms Hanson said on Sky News.

“So I’m going to look at my options … and put it (a motion) forward.”

She said Ms Thorpe had to be held to account if ministers were serious about their constant emphasis of integrity and public trust in politics.

“Everyone’s screaming – and the Labor Party – about, ‘You’ve got to have integrity in the parliament and politicians must be held to account if we’re going to maintain the confidence of the public in us as politicians’,” Ms Hanson said.

“So therefore, I intend to try and do something about it.

“You can’t just whitewash it by saying ‘Oh, you stepped down as deputy leader in the Senate. I’m sorry, it’s not good enough.”

Ms Hanson also slammed Ms Thorpe’s performance as a politician and said she had been disrespectful in parliament.

“Her performance has been pathetic,” she said.

“That woman should not be in parliament as far as I’m concerned. She has no respect for the parliament at all.”

Pauline Hanson gets her own back!

BoN: McKellen’s Dick da turd is not to be missed — and it’s full of little in jokes and gags that make this melodrama so much more fun.

The arriviste Woodvilles are played by Americans (played well, oddly enough, for a change as Americans shouldn’t let anywhere near Shakespeare), the opening song is by the man who actually wrote ‘Shakespeare’, Marlowe, and wait for the ‘my kingdom for a horse’ line and how McKellen handles that one in a 1930s setting.

Yet at the same time you get stellar ‘voice’ actors (Geilgud as opposed to Olivier) who make the text work without false noses (Olivier again, always), just the music of the words, as in the clip below:

I never ‘got into’ Shakespeare and never will.

Shakespeare is one of the highpoints of Western civilisation. It is not a bad thing to be acquainted with it.

I think we only did Merchant of Venice up to Year 10. I went on to Years 11 and 12 before we did multiple plays. But the lessons of Shakespeare in school are not necessarily lessons about Shakespeare.

Personally, I love Shakespeare. But that’s me. And millions of other who learned about him at school.

But the issue here is not even about Shakespeare. When they talk about something not being relevant, they are not trying to say that the 16th century is irrelevant but not the 17th, 18th, 19th, or early 20th.

They want to say the past, with its dissimilar values and imperatives, are irrelevant. Knocking down Shakespeare just makes it easier to knock down everything else.

They want English literature, or even literature in general, to be restricted to the stunted ideologues that they approve of. They don’t want kids to know about the battles fought, the victories won by our forebears. They don’t want kids to draw the lesson that free speech is important, only that allowing different opinions hinders the great programme.

They don’t want kids to learn that resisting a government may be necessary to preserve the soul of a people. They want them to learn that only government can protect them. Not that an individual can make a difference, but that an individual can derail the great state.

As Shakespeare said in his great play Priapus and Testicles and so overlooked in the folio and quartos: Screw ’em!

Dover – A forty year old reserve officer was called up ten days ago and died at the front yesterday.

That is not how you do things if you are serious. Reserves need a couple months of refresher training. If the Russians are sending these guys from the street to the front in a week they have serious warm bodies problems.

The Ukrainians have been staging their retraining in tranches. I think they’re up to their six or seventh by now. By contrast what I see of the Russian side is very shambolic. In part I think that’s because the initial plan failed abjectly and there was insufficient staff work for backup plans. That improved with the offensive in the Severodonetsk area, which used proper artillery combined arms. But they ran out of warm bodies.

I hate to see guys die so futilely like this, on both sides. And it is futile unless something radically changes. WW1 was a war of bleeding, this seems to be too, until there’s no blood left.

If WW2 is any guide, they are shit at the start, once they get going, unstoppable.

Americans are like that. At the start they can’t find their arse with both hands (eg. Nassau Bay in PNG, which was a fine comedic snafu.)

Unfortunately I haven’t been seeing signs the Russians are getting going. A bit around Severodonetsk as I said, with some serious Brusilov-style tactics. But that has since fizzled. There are a lot of indications that ordnance is getting short, especially Kalibrs and suchlike, but also artillery ammunition – which they went through in vast quantities in the Severodonetsk offensive.

I don’t think Russia now is anything like Russia in 1941, unfortunately for them. The society has somewhat westernized and the demographic drought appears to be hitting.

US may end aid to Ukraine after midterms – Axios

The Biden administration says it’ll keep working with Congress to support Kiev regardless of the outcome of November’s vote

The extensive assistance provided by Washington to Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia may be cut if the Republican Party takes control of Congress in the midterm elections on November 8, Axios has reported.

Even the harshest critics of Vladimir Putin among the Republicans now acknowledge that there’s been a “noticeable shift away from what was once a broad bipartisan consensus” on providing aid to Kiev, the outlet reported on Wednesday.

It cited House minority leader Kevin McCarthy, who said in an interview with Punchbowl News earlier this week: “I think people are gonna be sitting in a recession and they’re not going to write a blank check to Ukraine. They just won’t do it.” Ukraine might be important, but it can’t be the only thing on the agenda of the US administration, he insisted.

Republican Congressman Don Bacon also said he’d “noticed” a decline in support for Ukraine. “You see it a little bit on social media, you see it with some of our members,” he said.

Bacon’s colleague Kelly Armstrong told Axios that the mood swing was likely a result of the feedback that the lawmakers had been getting from their constituents. “When people are seeing a 13% increase in grocery prices; energy, utility bills doubling… if you’re a border community and you’re being overrun by migrants and fentanyl, Ukraine is the furthest thing from your mind,” he pointed out.

The website also cited a senior House Republican, who claimed that “after the $40 billion [in aid package in May], there were a lot of Republicans saying: ‘This is the last time I’m going to support Ukraine funding.’”

In a comment to Axios, Congressman Jim Banks, who chairs the Republican Study Committee (RSC), pointed out that his party is going to focus on domestic issues after the midterms. “RSC believes you can’t lead abroad when you’re so weak at home. Our GOP agenda in the new majority needs to secure our own border and get America back on our feet by addressing energy cost and inflation,” he explained.

Asked to comment on McCarthy’s remarks, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre insisted that the Biden administration would “continue to work with Congress, as we have these past several months, on these efforts and support Ukraine as long as it takes.” Jean-Pierre reminded that this was a “commitment” that Joe Biden made to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

White House aides told Politico on Wednesday that the Biden administration hadn’t warned Kiev about the possibility of US aid coming to an end in the event that Republicans take control of at least one chamber of Congress after the election. However, officials in Kiev are aware that this may happen, they said.

Being your slave, what should I do but tend
Upon the hours and times of your desire?
I have no precious time at all to spend,
Nor services to do, till you require.
Nor dare I chide the world-without-end hour
Whilst I, my sovereign, watch the clock for you.
Nor think the bitterness of absence sour
When you have bid your servant once adieu;
Nor dare I question with my jealous thought
Where you may be, or your affairs suppose,
But like a sad slave, stay and think of nought,
Save, where you are how happy you make those.
So true a fool is love that in your will
Though you do anything, he thinks no ill.

Do Russian Sanctions Work?

There is a life-or-death debate going on whether Western sanctions are effective to pressure Russia to stop its offensive in Ukraine. The sanctions imposed are tough, yet there are holes that give Russia breathing room and lessens the economic pain on the Russian government.

A big question for Americans is whether the current sanctions are effective and if recently announced additional sanctions will have an impact. Some argue that the sanctions have had negligible impact and, in the case of energy, have strengthened the hand of Russia by providing undue leverage to the Kremlin as Europe enters winter.

The BBC reports that high oil and gas prices have helped Russia in one sense, because, as David Fyfe, chief economist at research organization Argus Media, told the BBC, Russia’s crude oil revenues rose 41% over the past year and “make up 40% of Russia’s total exports, and so they are helping greatly to fund the war.”

One company that is engaging in commerce with Russia, and arguably violating the OFAC directive despite having defense contracts with the U.S. government is the European aerospace giant Airbus.

The question of what Airbus will do when threatened with sanctions is for now rhetorical. Airbus continues to import titanium from Russia, despite the fact that Russia is a distant third or fourth globally in terms of titanium exports. Airbus continues to trade with Russia and finance Russia’s war effort against Ukraine without apology. Bloomberg News reported back in April that Airbus “defended its decision to keep importing Russian titanium, contending sanctions would hurt aerospace manufacturers who depend on the lightweight metal and wouldn’t deter Vladimir Putin after his invasion of Ukraine.” Airbus seems to thumb its nose at the world and says it will continue doing what it has done in the past as regards trade with Russia, taking the position that it gets to decide what is right or wrong.

A woman’s face with nature’s own hand painted
Hast thou, the master-mistress of my passion;
A woman’s gentle heart, but not acquainted
With shifting change as is false women’s fashion;
An eye more bright than theirs, less false in rolling,
Gilding the object whereupon it gazeth;
A man in hue, all hues in his controlling,
Which steals men’s eyes and women’s souls amazeth.
And for a woman wert thou first created,
Till nature as she wrought thee fell a-doting,
And by addition me of thee defeated
By adding one thing to my purpose nothing.
But since she pricked thee out for women’s pleasure,
Mine be thy love and thy love’s use their treasure.

Record snowfall measurements from very odd October Michigan snowstorm – up to 20 inches

While southern Lower Michigan saw an occasional snowflake in the past day, the Upper Peninsula had a record-breaking snowstorm.

The record-breaking snow fell across the central and western part of the Upper Peninsula. The heavy snow ranged between 6 and 20 inches, piling up away from Lake Superior and at the higher elevations of the western Upper Peninsula.

The National Weather Service office at Negaunee, about 10 miles west of Marquette, set two new snowfall records. Yesterday’s snowfall of 9 inches was a record snow for October 18. The combined snowfall from October 17 to October 18 at Neguanee measured 18.1 inches and is a new all-time record for a two-day snow event in October at the National Weather Service office. Good weather records date back to 1961 at the Marquette National Weather Service office.

Comparing Bach’s melodic mediocrity to Handel’s facility.. no contest.
Teleman, Zelenka, Sor and several others around Bach’s time produced more bang-for-buck than this guy, yet most classicists revere him above all others.
Go figure.

I didn’t know that, always thought the Lisztomania term was coined in the 60s. It is amusing that there have always been groupies.
