Mr Ed, signing a consent decree doesn’t equal fessing up as guilty. It’s the equivalent on Wall Street, of paying a fine to the SEC and neither admitting nor denying guilt.

“Only in a bungled multi-billion defence project would a government even try to hide a lazy $591 million in additional costs,” he said. “When we pay an extra $591 million for not building submarines, we lose those funds for public housing, schools or income relief.’’

Sorry, Albo, I’ll believe it when I see it.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews may have made a big mistake

THE Victorian Treasurer has denied a leaked report that found Premier Daniel Andrews stuffed up when he ditched the East West Link project.

Mr Andrews was accused of wasting $1.1 billion of federal funding when he scrapped the proposed 18km road to help relieve congestion and deal with population growth in Melbourne.

Mr Andrews created Infrastructure Victoria to get advice on other road priorities, but it seems it has backfired and the Herald Sun reports the body will release a report saying the East West Link is important to “meet Victoria’s infrastructure needs”.

Treasurer Tim Pallas denied the report and said the Labor government would never resurrect the dumped East West Link, despite Infrastructure Victoria’s support for the project.

The Victorian Government axed the toll road project when it won the 2014 election, ultimately spending $1.1 billion not to build it.

Yeah, I got that.
It’s the equivalent on Wall Street, of paying a fine to the SEC and neither admitting nor denying guilt.
If one of the conditions of the fine is being held in Contempt Of Court should the unadmitted behaviour reoccur, then yeah.
Otherwise, no.

WA fun police.

WA could banish fast-food outlets from being near schools in radical new plan to fix the state’s growing obesity crisis (8 Nov)

Fast-food outlets could see their hours slashed and radical new restrictions imposed on their locations as Western Australia floats ideas on how to tackle the state’s growing obesity epidemic.

Keeping fast-food away from schools was a key aspect of the report, as 86 per cent of schools in the state have at least one fast-food store within a 1km radius.

“Perth schools had an average of 1.8 fast food outlets located within 400m; 5.7 fast food outlets within 800m; and 8.1 fast food outlets within 1km,” the report said.

The report recommended changing planning laws to “limit unhealthy food outlets and to support access to healthy food options including near schools”.

Good luck with that. I recall when Dr Faustus described what happened at his school when the canteen was forced to sell ‘healthy options’ and nothing else. The kids decamped to the KFC just up the road and the canteen went bottom up. The new vendors then kept the healthy menu but quietly sold the good stuff from under the counter. Amazing how going against human nature never works.

WW3 dead ahead;

With the tenure of NATO’s current chief, Jens Stoltenberg, scheduled to end next fall, the jockeying among allies for who should replace him has begun in earnest, and the battle lines in the contest are already beginning to form, according to American officials familiar with the debate.

While the officials cautioned that these are early days, and very often the names that surface first do not survive the bargaining among NATO’s 30 members, they said one prime candidate has surfaced in Washington: Chrystia Freeland, 54, the Canadian-Ukrainian deputy prime minister and finance minister of Canada.

It’s more complicated then that. Often the election workers or watchers were legally not permitted in the election counting areas by the consent decree mentioned above.

It doesn’t really matter how closely the election counting areas are scrutinised if the votes are then fed into those vote counting machines. They can be pre-programmed to “homogenise” the votes to fortify the results.

Mr Andrews was accused of wasting $1.1 billion of federal funding when he scrapped the proposed 18km road to help relieve congestion and deal with population growth in Melbourne.

I don’t think that any federal funds were wasted for that failed project, it all came out of Victoria’s budget. Tony Abbott told Andrews that no federal funds would be provided if the CFMEU were associated with the project. Andrews then spat the dummy and the project was closed, and the Victorian government (not the Feds) had to cough up the cancellation costs.

Miranda has redeemed herself in the last few years, particularly since she moved to the Big Apple (she was born in NYC) and took a job working for the Post. However, I remember how she spruiked for Turdbull and became his biggest admirer when he was PM. She was furious when he was outed in August 2018. I’ve often thought the reason why she joined the Turdbull train in 2015 was because of her considerable disappointment with Abbott. And sure, I can understand that, we all were, however whilst Abbott was disappointing, Turdbull (and later Morrison) proved disastrous for the Liberal Party.

THE Essential poll last week quantified that strange beast: the delcon, or delusional conservative. These are Liberal voters so angry about Tony Abbott’s ousting they would rather Bill Shorten win the election than Malcolm Turnbull

Possibly because they knew what the creature was and was likely to do to the Party. Shorten on a tight Labor reign may, in retrospect, have done far less damage. Hard to know.

From the Daily Telegraph….

Folau’ documentary: Wallabies star claims Rugby Australia stopped Christian players supporting teammate

A new documentary on Israel Folau shines fresh light on Rugby Australia’s role in the divisive saga, with current Wallabies star Sam Kerevi making explosive claims in the two-part series.

A new documentary on Israel Folau shines fresh light on Rugby Australia’s role in the culture wars that are still dividing Australian sport.

At the same time that national sporting bodies are being scrutinised for virtue signalling and meddling in complex social issues, the two-part ABC film – entitled Folau – is sure to raise new questions about one of the most divisive cases sport has seen.

Samu Kerevi, arguably the best player in the current Wallabies’ set-up, has gone on public record for the first time claiming Christian players who agreed with Folau’s religious views were barred from publicly supporting their teammate.

And Kerevi – one of the few players who went against those instructions and ‘liked” Folau’s social posting saying “hell awaits” “drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists and idolators ” – doesn’t stop there.

In what turned out to be a precursor to the Manly pride jersey fiasco that rocked the NRL this year, Kerevi also claimed RA caused a deep split in the rugby ranks five years ago by adding a rainbow to its logo.

The inclusion of the rainbow symbolised RA’s support to vote ‘yes’ in the same-sex marriage survey, but as the Sea Eagles recently discovered there was a problem.

Kerevi said he and other Polynesian players were never consulted about their beliefs.

“No one came up to us and asked us if we support it,” Kerevi said.

“You know, no one asked us our opinion on it. They just said, you know, Rugby Australia supports gay marriage.”

Kerevi also told the film makers that players who supported Folau were kept away from the media when the issue blew up three years ago, triggering a national row over freedom of religion and speech, employments contracts and the protection from discrimination of the LGBTQI community.

RA has always denied muzzling players, but Kerevi says otherwise.

“We got told from our media teams not to say anything about supporting Izzy or saying anything at all,” he said.

“But after those coming days it was everyone that didn’t support him was all over the news. They were to be interviewed. They were allowed to say that they don’t support the message.”

The documentary focuses largely on the view of Polynesians around the case and Kerevi says he sees ‘both sides’ because he has gay family members.

But he also says the whole saga, which resulted in Folau losing his contract and missing the 2019 World Cup, although he received a $3.1 million payout, represented a case of serious double standards.

“If someone does domestic violence and he’s OK to play, but someone that’s posted something that was in the Bible, no, let’s not play on,” he said.

Two years in the making, the two-part series, which goes to air November 21 and November 28, includes interviews with a wide range of people, representing different views.

Michael Cheika, who was then the Wallabies coach, opened up about the anguish it caused, saying: “That was a really difficult time for the team. Really difficult.

“I was confronted in the street aggressively, many times by people. I imagine that was happening to players as well.”

World Cup finalists in 2015 when Folau was in the side, the Wallabies have never recovered since he was booted off the team, bombing out early at the 2019 World Cup and slumping down the world rankings in the years since.

One of Australia’s greatest fullbacks, the dual-code international played 73 Tests for the Wallabies, and scored 37 tries, before his contract was terminated, setting off a messy legal squabble.

Now 33, he currently plays for Japanese club Urayasu D-Rocks and made a brief return to the international arena this year for Tonga, but lasted less than half an hour before limping off injured.

Brendan Nelson backs frontier violence memorial

exclusive

Reporter

Outgoing Australian War Memorial chair Brendan Nelson has revived calls to build a tomb for the “unknown warriors” that recognises frontier violence, arguing the memorial deserves to be treated as unique among the country’s cultural institutions.

As a decade in charge of the nation’s most treasured institution ends this week, Dr Nelson defended the war memorial against claims of lavish funding, criticism of its ongoing expansion and controversial plans to broaden its presentation of frontier warfare.

In an interview with The Australian, the Howard-era defence minister said the construction of a new precinct at Reconciliation Place in Canberra’s parliamentary triangle – including a sacred ossuary of Indigenous remains – would make a fitting composite to the war memorial’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, across Lake Burley Griffin.

“We’ve got the remains of 1700 unknown Indigenous Australians … so let’s build an ossuary there with a presence above the ground to create a precinct which can tell the story of 60,000 years of Aboriginal history and culture … including the massacres and other (episodes) of violence through to the referendum in 1967 and the apology.”

Dr Nelson, soon to relocate to London to become just the second foreign president of Boeing International, said a tomb and precinct would offer greater scope to recognise frontier violence than the memorial, which is intending to install only a “modest, proportionate” display in its colonial galleries.

It’s a proposal that has already garnered the support of Indigenous leaders, including Warren Mundine and Ken Wyatt, after the Morrison government agreed to commit $316m to construction of the Ngurra Cultural Precinct.

Mr Wyatt, who was part of the development of the Ngurra project, agreed with Dr Nelson that the precinct would include a broader history of frontier warfare in a proposed educational centre, but said the war memorial “still needed to engage in truth-telling” and “acknowledge the violence perpetrated on the frontier”.

The RSL, which has vocally opposed any recognition of frontier conflict at the memorial, said that such a precinct would be a more appropriate setting to acknowledge the scope of its history. Last month, Dr Nelson told The Australian the war memorial’s changes would only be “modest”, contrary to reports it was planning a major exhibition in its pre-1914 galleries.

“I’m very confident that when this (display) is done and is opened – probably in 2027, not far from the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet – I think the basis of criticism will be much less than perhaps it is now,” he said. “Australia’s history is different from North America and from New Zealand. And the instructions to Arthur Phillip were to apply maximum beneficence to the natives and anyone who disrupted their activities was to be severely punished. That’s where it started.

“Tragically, and perhaps inevitably, 20,000 Indigenous people were killed in dispossession, (as well as) 2500 Europeans. My view is that this is a story that has to be told.”

There’s nothing sacred, is there?

Much of the world’s silver is for industrial use, and a lot of it is lost after use.

A small percentage is used for jewellery and ornaments, and an even smaller percentage is used for investment purposes.
However, it can be viewed as a ‘safe haven” commodity, it is relatively cheap to buy at around $A1000 a kilo, and is readily tradeable.

Many mining operations treat silver as a by product, often not worth the cost of processing and refining, so if for whatever reason the spot price skyrocketed, and if it could be profitably processed, the supply side would swing into action and the ready availability of silver would bring the price back down again.

Hundreds of British police officers sign up to join WA Police in landmark international recruitment push
The West Australian
Tue, 8 November 2022 7:22PM
Shannon Hampton

British bobbies are signing up in droves to join WA’s police force as part of an historic global recruitment drive to get more boots on the ground.

WA Police became the first policing agency in Australia to launch such a campaign last month as it battles to bolster its ranks amid a record number of resignations.

A breakdown of the 393 applications received so far shows 301 (75 per cent) of the applicants are from England.

Meanwhile, 40 of the applicants are from Scotland, 19 from Wales and 33 from Ireland.

Most of the applicants are male — 320 — while 73 women have applied to join the force in WA.

Can energy markets become more convoluted and messed up with intervention over tangled intervention than they are now? Yes they can!

The head of Treasury has backed direct intervention to push down coal and gas prices and redistribute the super profits earned by energy companies to poorer households, as a temporary relief measure to address soaring power bills.

As the Albanese government scrambles to put together a potential package of regulatory and tax measures aimed at containing a 56 per cent increase in electricity prices over the coming two years, Treasury secretary Steven Kennedy said “direct intervention” in the domestic energy market was justified by the extraordinary circumstances associated with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Dr Kennedy, in prepared remarks to a Senate estimates hearing, also warned of a “marked” deterioration in the global outlook and said it was “becoming probable that major developed economies will soon experience recessions”.

Do I really have to say it? “Violence” is not necessarily war, otherwise we’d be proposing a Bourke St Massacre display in the AWM, too. Perhaps even a display for the victims of the Bali Bombing. It’s just not appropriate.

Piss off and leave the AWM alone. It needs to do nothing of the sort. It’s for people (indigenous included) who risked and gave their lives for the nation, the whole nation. This came in my email from ‘The Spectator’, I wouldn’t be at all amazed if it is true. Back in May the Libs did their preferences in order to hurt many freedom party candidates. They truly don’t deserve to win. Many people just won’t vote for the minor parties.

“Last week, some readers excoriated this newsletter for defending the Vic Libs against effective collusion with an authoritarian and lockdown-happy Andrews government. But if a reported shonky, shabby, stupid preference deal favouring the Greens in vulnerable Labor seats, making Victoria even safer for the loony Left, goes ahead, there is a special place in political Hell – next to that idiot WA Liberal leader who reduced his party to two seats last year – reserved for the so-called leaders who make it. Should it proceed, selling out Liberal principles for expedience, entrenching ingrate Greens, and shafting loyal party members, is reprehensible. The party leadership today must deny the reports and commit to never doing any such deal. Or do it, and see who mans the booths for the Liberals on polling day – nobody. Do these foolish people actually want to win?”

Cassie of Sydney

Stephen, this is in the Oz….

Libs eye Greens to smash Andrews’ Labor
JOHN FERGUSON

The Victorian Liberal Party is investigating preferencing the Greens over Labor in crucial seats amid debate about how to use the minor party to undermine Daniel Andrews’ hold on power.

The Liberal Party is in the final stages of discussions over preferences, with officials looking to favour the Greens to diminish Labor’s lower house numbers.

Sources said the party was leaning towards sticking by its slogan of “Put Labor last”, which could have a significant impact on the government’s attempts to retain the left-leaning inner-city seats of Richmond (5.9 per cent) and Northcote (1.7 per cent).

Those seats could be key to Labor remaining in majority government if its vote falls, as it has done since 2018. The last Newspoll points to up to 10 government seats falling amid a near six-point drop in primary vote support over the four years.

It’s a dangerous dance with the devil.

Ah yes, the pettiness of the Liberal Party when it comes to other parties on the right, particularly towards the Lib Dems and PHON. I should just remind people that this pettiness has resulted in the current senate makeup. The WA Liberals preferred to preference the Greens and Labor ahead of PHON.

Here in Wentworth, back in May, the Liberals put PHON behind the Greens, Labor and Big Spender. If you didn’t laugh you’d cry.

Thanks sfw. Interesting article.

The somewhat less meaningful Covid death tally (per million population) does not have the same relative magnitude since different countries use different methods for recording what is and what isn’t a Covid death, on top of the fact, of course, that it’s a Pyrrhic victory to mitigate Covid deaths at the expense of higher excess non-Covid deaths. Take a look at Canada and Israel as prime examples of this – remarkably low Covid deaths relative to the rest of the world but very much in the worst half of the dataset in terms of overall excess mortality.

“Higher excess non-Covid deaths” – does this point to the sick, or perhaps the soon-to-be-sick, succumbing to their illnesses because of lack of services during the interminable lockdowns?

Sweden is at over 73% fully vaccinated so perhaps that is not playing into the figures as much as some may think.
