Fucking VAERS for Christ’s sake.
Anyone quoting that as anything more than a vague starting point for setting up a proper study simply doesn’t understand statistical analysis.
The “V” in VAERS stands for “Voluntary”.
Which means pretty much anyone can lodge ‘reports’.
And since it became known outside professional medical circles, the acolytes of RFK Jnr and Co have been loading it up.
Remember the Lancet Iraqi Death Toll count?
VAERS has become that on steroids.

Paradoxically, it also under-reports for various reasons, including the difficult to navigate website and pressure for potential reporters not to stray from the narrative.

I wouldn’t be betting my house on data from VAERS.

This doesn’t demonstrate the intent you’re ascribing to the Russians. If they wanted to occupy Kiev, they’d…well…occupy Kiev, or at least make some kind of effort to do so.

I think even the heavy handed Russians don’t want to be seen to destroy a city like Kiev.

The schisms within the US will not be bridged easily or any time soon, and look to me to be as intractable as they were in the years prior to the civil war. However, the split back then was simpler and able to be brutally cauterised by means of a civil war. I can’t see how a civil war solves what we see today. It isn’t clear to me who would be fighting whom, what they would be fighting for, where and how they’d be fighting and what victory/resolution would look like.

Weird people on here have convinced themselves that:
1. The Russians don’t want Kiev, but could easily have it if they wanted it. That massive logistics traffic jam we watched for weeks was just for show or some shit like that.
2. The Russians are ultra cautious not to hurt civilians.
3. The Ukrainians have bombed and destroyed Mariupol themselves while using civilians as hostages to stop the Russians from bombing their own positions.
4. Ukrainians are torturing and killing their own civilians en masse.
5. Russia is an awesome war machine.
6. Ukraine would be kaput except for their dastardly dirty tactics that the brave Russians are fighting heroically to overcome.

I don’t blame the Russians for not trusting NATO or the US, because they’ve proven to be full of shit from my perspective, let alone from a Russian perspective. I sure as hell wouldn’t want NATO on my doorstep if I were Putin. This doesn’t mean I love Putin, worship Russia, despise Ukraine etc. If I were Ukrainian, I’d likely be angry as hell at the Russians but also at NATO and the US for making me a bunch of promises and then leaving my country high and dry when I look for these promises to be kept.

Top Ender, how did the train trip go?

I did it the other direction a few years ago, and while the food was ordinary, the red wine was surprisingly good. So much so that … another time. 🙂

Anyway, what I noticed was how slow the train went most of the time, whether because of bends and curves, or poorly maintained tracks, or whatever. From memory, it was five hours from Sydney to Canberra, and you can drive it in four.

Given what a PITA air travel is these days, with long advanced check-ins, security queues, rude/indifferent staff and much the same at the other end, I would have thought that Canberra/Sydney would be a moneymaking opportunity for the trains. By air, you arrive at Mascot, where nobody wants to be, and have to start travelling all over again.

My trainfare was more than the airfare, and even with all the air inconveniences it took a couple of hours longer than flying.

But hey – NSW Railways – a mess for many years. Unions, and braindead management (sides of the coin). Every now and then they hire a whizzkid, with predictable results.

That’s because when you have evidence of some shit awful thing occurring the US is responsible for, you really have to ask what political party caused the problem. 110% of the time it’s the demonic side of US politics.

Why would someone on the receiving end of the shit awful thing occurring that the US is responsible for care about which US political party is running the show? It’s not as though they get to vote the fuckers out. Besides, the GOP isn’t much better. Look at all those warhawk GOP senators. And the rest of them don’t give a shit as long as they keep making bank. The problem isn’t a partisan one. It’s the US permanent bureaucracy that seeks to return the US to the strategic position it held circa 1946, and it’s willing to do all kinds of shit to get there. Trouble is that getting there is an impossible task, but they don’t seem to realise this obvious reality, and they’re willing to bleed the US white in this grand folly of theirs.

Removing the cancer that is the permanent bureaucracy, the parallel state, the state-within-a-state, the Military Industrial Complex, the interagency, the Deep State – whatever you want to call it – from the US body politic is not impossible, but it isn’t a simple matter, either. And both party establishments are part incentivised, part coerced to protect it.

There is a difference between the Dems and the GOP – the Democrat establishment is deeply entrenched and has no credible opposition, whilst there is a genuine insurgency threatening the GOP establishment that, if it succeeds in taking over the party, would have a much freer hand to dismantle the deep state. However, it has a long way to go. But there is hope.

But if it does – and remember that Pinochet was the response to years of Leftist sabotage of the Chilean economy and society. Just like what is happening in the West today, with continued support from both Russia and China.
So yes – if Russia and China are getting hurt because of the blowback from their policies over the last 50 years, I don’t really care. Both of these countries pissed a lot of goodwill and support from the Democracies when they needed help against invaders.
They’ve worked hard to get into the position they find themselves – I hope they remember who is to blame.

In the midst of all the Russia/Ukraine talk, a flood story.

A friend has just come back from the Lismore cleanup. Daughter lost everything, but the house is still liveable. The stench was horrific from the mud and putrefying carcasses, including some poor mutts who were caught in the torrent. They retrieved the collars and rang the owners…a sad task. And instead of throwing the poor things on the heap, they buried them in the sucking swill called the back garden.

Then…the daughter discovered a lurking little cat, half starved with an injured foot. After three days of effort she finally coaxed it into a cage and off to the vet for foot repairs.

The cat was chipped. Turned out the owner, miles upstream, was an 80 year old man, lost his wife a week before the deluge, then lost everything in the flood. Except the cat, which is now a lifesaver and comfort for the poor man.

calli, thanks for that story.

Politicians and media seem to have moved on, while thousands of people are homeless or have homes they can’t inhabit due to the floods.

What’s more, it’s feeding into the unstable and rising real estate market in NSW and adjacent.

There are still people who lost their homes in the bushfires a couple of years ago who have finally got their insurance payouts, or who have been trying to rebuild but can’t because of COVID supply chain issues. They have been living in tents and caravans and SUVs and cadging off relatives and friends. Not of interest.

Meanwhile, politicians have been announcing new *bright* and *shiny* projects as elections loom.

Daily Mail has article about why people not lining up to get the booster. Below is quote from General Frewen.

‘Some people have had Covid. Some people are just a bit over the whole Covid thing.

‘What we know, from the medical advice, is the booster will reduce the severity of Covid if you get it and it will help avoid the effects of long Covid.

‘So it’s really important. It’s never been easier to get the vaccines than now.’

Much has been claimed about what the vaccines will do. Remember when it was going to prevent you from catching and spreading the virus. Then more recently we have had the admissions that they did not know they were going to wane. If they could not test for waning due to short development time then how could they know it would help avoid the effects of long covid. Especially as the first three jabs were created before Delta.

I think Frewen has made up another benefit that is simply not true and could not have been tested for. It would be good if a journalist asked which medical advice he is referring to but we know that is not going to happen.

I hope crimes on both sides, and there will be crimes on both sides, are investigated and prosecuted after the war and pricks get hanged.
Given the politics of it, I doubt this will occur.
Which leaves reporting of alleged crimes during the heat of the war as what they are: grist to the propaganda mills, which are currently in overdrive.

“I want to make it clear to everyone, both in our country and abroad, to our partners, that it’s not even about the line that we don’t want anyone to cross. The fact is that we have nowhere to retreat. They have pinned us against a line from which, sorry for the bad manners, we have nowhere to retreat,” President Vladimir Putin – December 2021, almost two months before he ordered the assault on Ukraine.

At the time, Moscow was trying to come to an agreement with NATO on mutual security, hoping that the US-led bloc would agree to provide comprehensive written guarantees that it would not expand any further to the east.

The existence of these red lines – most notably against NATO expansion into Ukraine – is not some subjective concept born in the minds of Russia’s current leadership. It had been discussed in the west for years.

In 1998, George Kennan, American diplomat and historian said NATO expansion would mean nothing less than “the beginning of a new Cold War,” warning that it would be a “tragic mistake.” and “Of course, this will provoke a bad reaction from Russia. And when that happens, [those who made decisions about NATO expansion] will say that we have always told you the Russians are like that. But it’s just not true.”

In 1997, 50 prominent foreign policy experts, including former senators, military leaders, and diplomats, sent an open letter to then-President Bill Clinton outlining their opposition to NATO expansion. “It is a policy error of historic proportions”.

Conservative political commentator Pat Buchanan wrote in his 1999 book ‘A Republic, Not an Empire’, “By moving NATO onto Russia’s front porch, we have scheduled a twenty-first-century confrontation.”

The current director of the CIA, William Burns, said in 2008 that for Russia, “Ukraine’s accession to NATO is the brightest of all red lines. I have not yet found anyone who would consider Ukraine in NATO as something other than a direct challenge to Russia’s interests.

Just so everyone is clear that a serious Russian response including invasion was anticipated, foretold, expected, envisaged, predicted and presumed if NATO’s push east continued.

War crime allegations came out in media because ‘system failed’, MP tells Ben Roberts-Smith lawsuit
Perry Duffin
Senior Court Reporter

NCA NewsWire
8 minutes ago March 28, 2022

“The system has failed” at handling war crime allegations and it had fallen to the media to do the job of government, Andrew Hastie has told the defamation trial of Ben Roberts-Smith.

Mr Roberts-Smith is suing Nine newspapers and journalists over a series of articles that allege he committed war crimes, including six killings, while in Afghanistan with the SAS.

The former elite soldier denies every claim and over the past few days has watched federal MP Mr Hastie testify against him in Sydney’s Federal Court.

Mr Hastie was a captain in the SAS and served alongside Mr Roberts-Smith, briefly, in 2012.

Allegations against Mr Roberts-Smith had been spreading like wildfire in the SAS regiment at that time, the court has heard, including that he had killed unarmed Afghans.

The court also heard that multiple SAS operators had told regiment commanders they had witnessed or heard about killings and bullying involving the Victoria Cross winner.

The Australian Defence Force opened an inquiry into rumours of special forces misconduct in May 2016 and by 2018 at least some of the inquiry’s witnesses were speaking to Nine journalists Chris Masters and Nick McKenzie, the court has heard.

Mr Hastie spoke to the journalists in 2019, he said, but did not want to openly accuse Mr Roberts-Smith of wrongdoing.

“There were people attacking that inquiry in the public square … For it to be undermined, diminished and attacked was bad for our country,” he told Mr Roberts-Smith’s barrister, Arthur Moses SC.

“The reason these allegations came to light is the system, thus far, has failed, Mr Moses,” he said. “When a system fails, sometimes it’s up to the fourth estate to do the job.”

He was wrongly accused of murder for shooting a career criminal who tried to run him down in a stolen truck.
Thinking this criminal was about to kill him or his fellow officers, Michael pulled his weapon and defended himself.

Not long after the indictment, we started a fundraising campaign on the internet site “GoFundMe” to raise money for a proper legal defense.
After a few days, “GoFundMe” shut down the fundraiser.
They claimed Michael’s actions were an “act of hate” – and helping him violated their terms of service.
You see, the car thief was a Hispanic man, and Michael is a white police officer.

Perhaps it’s time for white police officers to resign en masse from their respective police forces.

When did hanging white linen on someone’s verandah replace burning a cross on the front lawn?

An old timer reminiscing about the 1940’s out West in NSW during heat waves told me that he and his family used to hang wet white sheets over doorways and on verandahs in order to get the cooling effect of catching any wind and turning it marginally less hot indoors or in the verandah sleepout. They also used to sleep under wet white sheets and his wife used to drape herself in them when she went to the outdoor dunny. All part now of ‘Klan’ mythology in the eyes of those seeking to be victims.

Either the man experiencing this as the Klan and its Wizardry was living in a wash house or people were using sheets as air conditioners simply in accord with local custom.

Sorry to belabor the point, but I’m getting that strong feeling of Deja vu again. This response is identical to what I encountered when I first started looking into global warming years ago. Somehow, every critical site was unreliable and every questioning person was somehow compromised and discounted. Up to and including the previously acknowledged greatest expert in meteorology, Professor Richard Lindzen. It took me a while to realise that it wasn’t the person, it was whether the opinion conformed with the narrative.

She said she might reconsider it Putin is assassinated. I thought WTF! And then my voice rose and I said….”Are you fucking kidding me. Government must be banned from the new bureaucrat play school game of producing and imposing apps on the population.
There is now an app produced by Border Farce which has to be filled in if you are returning to Oz.
It contains more rules than rugby union. The usual “great grandmothers maiden name” unnecessary info demands. DOB to be entered at least fifty times.
You have to upload you passport photo page. “Scuze me bureaucratprick you already have my passport photo page”.
There is a time limit before return for commencing filling in the app, just to ensure a maximum fuck around factor.
Couple of questions:
Why isn’t this just another folder on My Gov?
Why must I upload my passport. You already have it and your Pakis at the airport will be scrutinising it in detail if I am a white guy.
The reality is this is designed for foreigners, but the crats are happy to also fuck around Aussies.
My biggest beef is that I can no longer indulge in the futile but satisfying exercise of crossing out ‘Permanent Resident’ and writing ‘CITIZEN”.
I need to calm down and prepare myself for undergoing every security, xray and explosives check as is appropriate for a high risk ancient half crippled white guy.

Ukrainians don’t want to be under the Russian thumb, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they want to embrace American liberalism in all its moral decadence. And if ordinary Ukrainians repel the Russians I’d suggest they might also want more say in the future of their country. One thing where Ukraine differs from Russia is that it has a functioning civil society that gives ordinary people a voice over against the state and the oligarchs.

Somebody in a comment earlier alleged that India is neutral re. Ukraine. Maybe the man on the street is but the Indian government is certainly not “neutral”. India is not siding with the West in supporting Ukraine, it refused to support the West’s UN motion condemning Russia over the invasion. The Indian government remains very close to Russia, it has a long relationship with Russia going back to the 1950s, it buys Russian wheat and arms. Also, given the current decrepit US leadership, I doubt that India is going to throw Russia or its relationship with Russia to the wolves.

Are you saying ABC Four Corners has footage of Ben RS killing a civilian ? If so are you referring to the episode which showed SAS getting out of helicopter and then one of them shooting the Afghan? If not that incident can you tell us which episode ?

Ben RS is about 6ft 4″ and very bulky. Pretty sure he is not the guy in that footage and your suggestion is first I have ever heard of that the shooter might be him.

Strange that you would say this as part of a stoush where you are trying to say somebody else is a liar.

Try to resist saying this is part of a pile on but facts do matter and simply can’t make things up in order to support an argument.

Roger says:
March 28, 2022 at 6:45 pm
Which, in my mind, raises this question – if Putin falls short of his goals in Ukraine, as seems increasingly probable, does that make him more or less dangerous?

Dunno. But, what is his goal? What are Russia’s objectives? The complete subordination of the entire landmass we know as Ukraine? Part of it? Dismissal of the current government? Demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine – as per Putin’s speech? Ukrainian sworn neutrality, accepting the federation of the Donbas and official handback of the Crimea?

I’ve said a couple of times that I thought, having started this thing, that he couldn’t stop at the Dniper River for reasons I explained at the time. Now, I’m not quite so sure. Maybe it is viable. Choke off Ukraine from the Black Sea and secure the Donbas. Force Ukraine to negotiate or we will push Odesa into the sea?

The peace negotiations re-commence in Turkey today (28th) and it appears that Ukraine are ‘accepting’ of the Russian demand of Ukrainian neutrality in return for Russia guaranteeing that the Ukrainian border is 100% secure. In other words, no NATO = we won’t be back.

I think the Crimea is a relatively easy negotiation and Ukraine will be able to extract significant concessions for formally handing it back. But the Donbas is another matter. Part of the problem, IMO, is that the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR) is planning to hold a plebiscite on re-joining Russia notwithstanding that Russia recognised it as an independent federation. Therefore, if that went ahead and they formally re-joined Russia, that obviously means that they are formally recognised to have seceded from Ukraine (probably along with the DPR).

And why? Why would they want to join Russia if they are independent federations and why would Russia need them to do so (or even accept them into Russia) especially of the entire Ukraine has adopted neutrality? They could be in free association with Russia and extract Kremlin support. Acceptance of potential secession, in the future, seems like an unnecessarily hard path to negotiate with Ukraine. Of course, this could be just a ruse negotiation point.

Ukrainian sworn neutrality, accepting the federation of the Donbas and official handback of the Crimea could be the objectives. Zelensky is a neutered ‘bit-player’ if those things are achieved. The UK, for example, has already said it will lift the sanctions on Russia when they withdraw from Ukraine and their are commitments of no further aggression. Ukraine neutrality will fix that. Other nations in the EU will promptly follow for their own reasons.

IF Ukrainians are shooting prisoners in the leg, that is a crime.

IF that is not a video game or layered with CGI a la Ghost of Kyiv, and bearing in mind I don’t care, and also bearing in mind that like everyone else (except the dating coach turned cash-grabber via podcast Mr Lira) is watching this from the other side of the world – I wouldn’t have a problem with it.

IF the Ukes have captured shit tins of Russians, and IF they’re not in a position to take them back to eastern Ukraine en masse because they wouldn’t have anyone left to shoot at Russians, and also considering they’d have to feed and shelter them, and IF they were let go they’d end up at or behind the Russian lines and thrown back into circulation, and IF they were serious – one in the leg would be fine. Books have been written on this, and I for one don’t see a problem with it.

It’s that or one in the head. Are they at war or not?

Dopey is as dopey does. I was busy making a film on the Western plains of NSW, Dopey, at the time of talking to that old geezer, living during the filming in a motel (shades of Johanna, and I don’t diss her for that, it’s sensible sometimes). In that rarified atmosphere such was the excitement and isolation that I ended up having a passionate affair motel-style with the director during the interegnum for husbands. I was an inner-city lefty westie at that time, living nowhere near Vaucluse, and the old geezer telling me about bush aircon wouldn’t have had a bar of Vaucluse had he ever known of it. An old style Labor man, he was very against what he called ‘the money men’.

Is that good enough for you?

ps he broke my heart on our next film together but you win some you lose some – and I wasn’t following Jane Austen’s rules, so it would have been a disaster even if he hadn’t dumped me for his airheaded heroin-toking camera assistant. We still had to work together on the editing, which was cruel.

It’s still a crime KD.

Fair enough. In which case, we’d better go after the Australian WWII vets who unashamedly shot surrendering Japs out of hand in the Kokoda campaign in 1942/3, and all of the Yanks who shot Germans with their hands up all the way across Europe and on those Pacific islands in 1945.

On the Russians, we’d better hit them up for everything after Stalingrad to Berlin. They slaughtered ten of thousands of Krauts out of hand every month from the end of 1942 on, because the Krauts were doing the exact same thing – plus taking pot shots at the Russian POWs on their way back to the camps in Poland in 1941.

They had no compunction telling anyone who would listen why they were shot straight out. Top Ender’s book on the subject is well researched and a decent read on the subject.

There may well be logistical impossibilities in keeping POWs alive on occasions, particularly if they have form for trying to kill their captors post-surrender.

There may not be either, but in any event I don’t care whether either side kills prisoners or not.

Brett Whines ( Bourne 1788)..

I just checked and it isn’t BRS in the video. I mistakenly thought it was as I was relying on faulty memory. However, even though I got the person in the video wrong, it doesn’t take away the fact that an SAS dude ostensibly killed someone who was supposedly unarmed.
But even so, this isn’t the real point of the argument I was making.

If you had followed the argument closely and objectively, which is obviously beyond you, I was saying that Driller and an a number of others here were relying on an uncontested video about Ukrainians soldiers treating Russian soldiers cruelly. In the same breath these would be the same people standing up for the SAS dudes.

Let’s be clear about this, so you don’t head off at the fork in the road as you normally do. I have zero opinion on the two videos as I’ve learnt to never trust uncontested film footage.

  1. Dover Would you believe it? Can you believe it? 13% of the Russian population actually had the temerity to vote…

  2. It’s almost hilarious that Sir Robert Menzies’s Liberal Party (what was he thinking when he came up with that?) is…
